Women’s Races: Spilling over high tea June 2016

Flat Judy ready to run

Today is the large women’s 5k in our city. It’s a big deal around here, with prize money and elites, even though I’d tell you that the expo sadly gets smaller and smaller every year.

I get a kick out of my more casual runner friends who train diligently for months for this race, and were talking about how they were taking it easy yesterday, not going to the gym (and they are gym rats).

I totally get it, too, because this race was my first 5k (it’s many women’s first 5k in this area) and I trained for a year for it. I still get a kick out of them. Above is flat Judy ready to go.

Today I am joining up with CocoDeborah, and Lynda for their ultimate coffee tea date.

The Ultimate Coffee Date

If we were enjoying high tea . . .
I’d tell you that as much as I love Apple products, they also piss me off. I just updated my ipod (seems like just a couple of weeks ago). I usually put it off as long as humanly possible.

And now there’s another update.

So I am still stuck every day telling it to remind me later.

If we were enjoying high tea . . .
I’d tell you I am diligently chipping away at my massive inbox. Everyday I delete 500 emails.

How did I get into that mess? Because until I started blogging, I rarely used our desktop. So I didn’t have a reason to come down, turn it on, and delete emails every day. Yeah, that’s my excuse & I’m sticking to it.

I’m about down to 50%. I think by the end of June I’ll have it back under control. Hey, I just found a June goal!

Great travel sneakers

If we were enjoying high tea . . .
I’d tell you these sneakers (affiliate link) were perfect for my last two trips. They may not be that much to look at, but they come off easily, they keep most moisture out, and best of all, they’re comfortable.

I wore them through airport security, through wet grass in the early morning walking Lola, through the drizzly Paul Simon concert.

I bought them from DSW, btw; the link I provided is to Amazon, which is more than I paid, but if you buy them through my link I get a little money.

If we were enjoying high tea . . .
I’d tell you that I’m not expecting a great finish time in today’s 5k. For one thing, it will be hot and after cool weather in Seattle, I’m definitely not heat acclimated. Although I did run in the afternoon on Thursday, at about 80F, and while it sucked, it didn’t suck quite as badly as I was afraid it might. Partly it sucked because I hadn’t run since Saturday.

The other reason is that it’s our big women’s race in this area, and with 4000 runners clogging narrow city streets, you’re pretty much assured of not getting a PR.

Unless you’re an elite. Because there’s prize money.

I really wish the elites had their own race so I could watch them race!

If we were enjoying high tea . . .
I’d tell you that as Mr. Judy put it when I told him, I have peony envy.

You see we planted 2 peony plants about 5 years ago. They come back year after year, but they never flower. The neighbors across the street have the most glorious peony bushes.

So last year I did a little googling and found they don’t like to be planted too deep. And that if you don’t want to replant them, you can try taking off some of the topsoil. So I did last fall.

One of them finally has buds! You can be sure I’ll be posting those flowers on IG when they bloom.

Tea? Iced Tea? Coffee? Decaf? Or something else?

What do you need to get off your chest?

  1. Enjoyed the tea date with you 🙂 I’m a tea person too and I love my masala Chai and Tulsi and Citrus etc… I have a similar kind of category on my blog called if we were strolling together.. And trust me these are the most amazing posts ever!! I love reading such things 🙂

  2. Have fun at your race. I like local races, you get to see so many familiar faces. LOVE peonies too. Hate technology too. 🙂
Send some heat this was. We have overcast skies, rain & floods.

    1. I’m a Renaissance tech user — I use Apple, Windows, & Droid. Apple is definitely much more annoying about the updates. Not sure if there are more, but it seems like it, probably because they’re so annoying about it!

    1. I don’t do a lot of 5ks, but I usually do a few each year.

I’m actually a much better shorter distance runner, I can get into the middle of the pack there –sometimes. Yet I love the challenge of the longer distances!

  3. Yup another vote for your outfit! I hate emails too. Not all emails. I mainly hate ‘for your information’, usually because it means I have to change something that I do and I haven’t been asked if I want to change etc etc

  4. Love the skirt of course! Good luck today. I do love a great local 5k and it’s wonderful that it brings out casual runners too. I have a million emails to delete everyday too thanks to blogging lol. I am so not a green thumb but I desperately need to go plant some pretty flowers. Thanks for stopping by for coffee today!

  5. I had no idea about peonies! They are so pretty but I do not have a green thumb – or the patience to deal with finicky flowers. Enjoy the 5K!

    1. Well, it didn’t really take a lot of time to scrape off a little soil. And it only seemed to work on one of the plants.

I do have a green thumb; what I seem to lack is time — or just having different priorities these days, I guess.

    1. Don’t even get me started on that whole space thing, and that’s definitely not just Apple!

I can barely load anything on my phone because the damn OS takes up so much space (and it’s a Droid) I have a memory card, but it doesn’t allow you to move much to it! It drives me insane!

  6. I hope you have a wonderful 5K today, Judy, and get caught up in the excitement of the event. I’ve no doubt that you will.

So happy you’ve discovered the secret of growing peonies that bloom. Mine are full of buds and three have blossomed this week. So lovely.

I hear you about apple products. I just update right away and am done with it. Reminders drive me nuts, too.

    1. Apple updates are often painful and that is why I often procrastinate on them.

My peony is still not full of blooms, but I’m happy just to see a flower on the damn thing finally! Although it hasn’t opened yet. Maybe after today’s rain.

The 5k was fun (but hot).

  7. Have fun at your race! Flat Judy is styling. My nextdoor neighbor, who moved out last summer and the house is sitting empty cuz she hasn’t put it up for sale yet, has gorgeous peony bushes at the end of her driveway and I want to go pick them…they smell so divine.

  8. Flat Judy will be looking good for the 5K!
I have not had a clean inbox in a long time lol I gave up! Social media can easily become overwhelming, which I why i don’t post much. This is super busy work time too, so I feel guilty if I can’t interact.
    I like the shoes!
I drank two cups of coffee today…I need my caffeine.

    1. Well, tea has caffeine too. I drank 3 cups yesterday before my race!

I think most people are busier in the summer, but I’m sorry that it’s work for you, unless that’s a good thing.

  9. Have a great race! I completely agree with Apple products! My iPad keeps telling me that it hasn’t been backed up but can only do it when the thing is plugged line, connected to wifi and will do so overnight and if the stars are aligned in the correct formation. So annoying!

  10. I hope you had a great run! It would be fun to watch the elites- I agree with you! I will keep an eye out for those flowers! Apple products will drive a person nuts- I can agree- LOL!

  11. I hope you enjoyed the 5k race and it wasn’t too hot! I always drag my feet on the apple updates too, but I do love their products. I consider my thumb to be pretty green, but I’ve never tried growing peonies. I have such a shady yard! Hostas are my favorite thing for that. Enjoy your Sunday!

    1. Well, it was hot by our standards, not yours, but not too bad. And yes, it was fun — thanks!

Parts of our yard are very shady, and parts get lots of sun. We have a LOT of hostas (which I don’t particularly like). My husband does the work with them — he keeps dividing them & replanting them!
