What’SUP?: 6/27-7/3 Weekly Wrap

Doesn’t everyone adopt a new dog the night before a race?

Well, we don’t know if we’ve really adopted him. If we don’t think it’s a match, I guess we’ll be fostering.  But much to my surprise we have two dogs again at the moment. And oh yeah, I ran four times this week.

I’m wrapping it up  with the Weekly Wrap from Holly @ Hohoruns and Tricia @ Misssipppiddlin. Share your healthy lifestyle with us and find out how other women are keeping active this summer.

Running update
Monday I got my run in semi-early. It was going to be a hot one with rain forecast in the afternoon. Couldn’t manage to hug up with any running buddies so I gave Lola a short walk and then got to the park around 9 am for 3 easy miles. Luckily it was overcast and breezy and not so bad, but I still felt as though I was running out of gas at the end — despite the negative splits.

Tuesday’s run was my slowest run in quite some time. The first & last miles weren’t too bad, although they were on the slow side, but man, I really slowed down big time during my hill repeats. Which is weird, because I didn’t struggle with them as much last week and Monday’s run went really well, but that’s the way running in — to paraphrase Forest Gump, you never know what you’re going to get.

Thursday I got out at almost 4 pm. I’m thinking I really ought to go a bit later, although it messes with my eating. I got through it, and as a tempo run, my pace wasn’t too bad.

Saturday was much cooler and I was running with friends and that always makes the miles go quicker (sort of, it actually felt a bit on the slow side, but with a race on Monday, that’s not a bad thing). My ankle was aching a bit afterwards, too; still totally random, in fact, it hadn’t bothered me in over a week.

Favorites of the week
A much quieter week this week. Well, that’s what I thought when the week started. Then Darlene messaged me about taking a SUP class, which I’d been eyeing, only not for this weekend.

After supping (I stayed dry)

I get very nervous trying new things. I’m a strong swimmer, but I have this irrational fear of falling into the water. Which is silly, since you have a life jacket on, and like I said, I can swim.

Yes, SUP made me nervous. Even though I didn’t fall in. But I want to try it again. I think after a few classes (maybe) and more practice with the getting on and off, maybe I’ll enjoy it more.

I got up, and even though I knew my feet weren’t in the right position, I was afraid to move them — for the entire hour! It’s unfortunate that we couldn’t take any photos while we were on the water

So after this weekend (I’m including Monday in that, since it’s a holiday), July should be fairly quiet. August, too. Things will “heat” back up in September with a few busy months to close out the year.

Giz is like: 2? Again?!

Except . . . we met a dog for a possible adoption after the SUP class. We weren’t looking to adopt, but our pet sitter had heard about this girl who got divorced and hasn’t been able to find an apartment in her price range that allows dogs.

Lola’s not quite sure yet . . .

So we met, and though I absolutely did not think we would have two dogs today . . . we do.

His name is Bandit, by the way

As I type, he is basically walking back and forth, trying to find any window to look at. Going outside, coming back in. I think he’s looking for his person. Not surprisingly, poor guy, he’s lived with her for 6 years. He won’t relax. And unfortunately he nipped Mr. Judy when Mr. Judy tried to pick him up and put him on his lap.

So my month just got busier . . .

And that’s a wrap!

I love to hear from you! Answer me one of the questions below in the comments, or just comment! Let me know what you think or what’s on your mind.

Anyone else find doing SUP made you nervous?

Anyone have any experience with a dog that nips?

Are you racing tomorrow?

  1. Hello, little Bandit. Don’t nip at Mr. Judy. I had to google SUPbut now that I know what it is, it would make me nervous. I’m not a great swimmer. No racing tomorrow but maybe some biking.

    1. We knew he isn’t always good with men, but he seems to like Lloyd. Lloyd was trying to help him up into his lap; too much too soon apparently.

I am a good swimmer so being nervous is just silly but there you go.

      Have fun biking!

    1. Thanks, Michelle. Bandit is cute, but I always say cute is as cute does. He seems like a very sweet dog, but like all dogs, he has his quirks.

Unfortunately I’m super tired because I slept terribly all week but I’m sure adrenaline will kick in & this race has great spectator support.

Chin up today! I’m sure you can’t help but think about your husband & you guys are in my thoughts.

  2. Poor little Bandit because he’s losing his person, but I’m sure he’s quite grateful to you for taking him in! I’ll be excited to hear how it progresses! Happy your SUP class went well! No race tomorrow, just work. 4th of July displaces a lot of animals. Have a happy one!!

  3. Yes! I am racing tomorrow! I don’t SUP UT my sister does. Good for you for trying something new. I want to try SUP in a small lake but would be a bit frightened to try it in the ocean where my sister does it!

I am so sorry that lady can not keep her dog where she lives. That is heart breaking!

    1. OMG, SUP in the ocean would terrify me! Even though it looks cool. The places I first thought of trying it years ago were the icy& I’m glad I didn’t do it then. This was a small reservoir!

Good luck in your race! Run happy!

  4. OMG that dog is too cute. I can understand you wanting 2 dogs. I want a second cat but it is so much work… but that doesn’t mean I won’t cave.
I think everyone gets nervous trying new things, it is normal when we go out of our comfort zones. At the same time, I think we need new experiences, even scary ones, or life gets boring fast.
    Have a great day !

    1. We weren’t really sure we wanted one right now but he just sort of fell into our laps.

Darlene didn’t seem nervous. Really no one else did. I kind wish I’d fallen in & I kind of don’t. 😊

  5. Poor Bandit! He’s been taken away from the only home he’s known for 6 years. But, I know you’ll give him all the love he needs to make that transition. He is cute! I’m always nervous about the unknown! The SUP with Darlene sounds amazing. It’s on my list. My sister is visiting in a few weeks and we may try it then. I’m not sure we could get a lesson though, just rent the boards. Thanks for linking Judy!

    1. Actually, the previous owner rescued him from a previous owner. And she did a great job with him, and yes, I feel so badly for the both of them. I can’t imagine having to ever give up one of my animals. But I also have to balance that with some discipline, and realize that our home is very, very different from the home he was in before.

It was heart breaking to see him pacing that first day. He stopped the next day, but continued to look out all windows.

He’s settling in now, sometimes a little TOO much!

The SUP lesson was via LLBean. I doubt you have one by you, but if you do, most of their stores do that sort of thing.

  6. What a great adventure for you two! I so wish I lived closer to yall. You just seem to have so much fun together! I can swim too but I’m nervous in the water. Aww I bet Bandit is so confused. I bet the nip was just a reaction of the confusion. I’m sure he misses his person. I hope it works out for all parties Judy. Thanks for sharing.

    1. Oh yeah, and you & Holly don’t have fun, eh? But I wish y’all lived closer too. I have so many online friends, some I’ve met in RL, and I sooooo wish they lived closer.

I’m quite sure that Bandit is very confused and definitely misses his person. But he’s adapting well, even if he’s running me ragged most of the time!

  7. I love SUP. I only got nervous one time, when I was out with my boys on Green Bay and the wind picked up. Matthew and I struggled to get back across the bay to the pier. It felt like we were being pushed backwards.

Lots of core strength needed to stay upright!

    1. I really didn’t feel my core at all. Maybe I was doing it wrong? Thankfully this was a nice little lake. It was a breezy day, but not terrible.

I was paddling out on my knees, thinking maybe I should just stay down here. . .

  8. I always feel so badly for people who have pets and end up needing to give them away because of life circumstances. It’s just so unfair…It’s also why I never got a pet while we were renting. You end up loving them like children, so the risk of having to get rid of them is just awful to think about 😦 I’m glad you’re giving this little guy a home (even if it’s just for now)!

    1. My first two cats came to me as strays at the no-pets apartment I was renting . . . thankfully I never had to give them up, but I also had a crazy cat lady friend whom I’m sure would have helped me.

This is not actually fostering (unless it really doesn’t work out) — this is an actual adoption we were totally unprepared to do.

We’ve had our ups & downs, and I know we’ll continue to, but I think he will work out in the end.

  9. Good for you for trying new things! I really try want to try SUP too. That is great you didn’t even fall 🙂
Bandit is so cute! He reminds me of the dog a girl at work adopted this year 🙂 I bet he is wondering what happened to his person…I think dogs grieve just like we do. I know you will take good care of him 🙂 Poor Giz though lol ha, mine were the same way when Bagheera stayed.
    Great week!

  10. SUP looks SO hard, I’d love to try it but I think I’d be waaay too shaky out there! Hopefully you do it again and we can see some pics! That’s awesome that you potentially may have a new dog to join the family. I’ve been thinking that fostering might be an option for my boyfriend and me, but haven’t looked much into it yet!

    1. Lemme tell you, I was totally shaking like a leaf most of the time. It was silly, but there ya go.

I was also like a deer in the headlights. I knew my feet weren’t really in the right position, but it seemed to be working for me so I did.NOT.move them — the entire hour!

Bandit is actually not a foster, he is now our dog unless something really goes south. Which wasn’t the plan, but sometimes that’s what life hands you!

  11. congrats on the SUP class- way to go! I love it! It is a little nerve wracking at first but then I really enjoy it! Congrats on the new dog! Bandit is in good hands, enjoy 🙂

    1. It was definitely nerve wracking for me, not so much for Darlene, but I guess that’s what makes the world go round. I have another friend that wants to try it now, I’ll have to message her and see when, although now that we’re in dog training, it’s a little harder to get out. Can’t dump all of that on Mr. Judy all the time.

He kept teasing me about having a new puppy when I go to FL in December, and I kept telling him no way jose.

Now he knows why, because it would be awful to be going through this in the middle of winter here!

  12. Good luck on the new dog… puppies take so much energy, I’ve been toying with the idea of adopting an older dog (or at least fostering). I’ve wanted to try SUP for some time… finally found a place around me to rent the SUP, now I’m wondering if I need a class!

    1. This is our first time adopting an older dog. We actually wanted to when we got our first dog, and met several, but none of them were ever right and finally I broke down and said ok, we can look at the puppy.

This isn’t easy, but yes, it’s easier than having a new puppy. He can be on his own without me watching him all the time, although he tends to hang out where I am anyway. And so far, knock on wood, he’s house trained, and that has definitely made life easier!
