You don’t always get what you want: 7/11-17 Weekly Wrap

But sometimes you get what you need

Things with Bandit are pretty status quo. I got all my runs in. And then I got something I really, really needed — but you’ll have to keep reading to find out what that was.

I’m wrapping it up  with the Weekly Wrap from Holly @ Hohoruns and Tricia @ Misssipppiddlin. I bare it all, most of the time — but you can share whatever you’d like to share. It’s all about women sharing and caring with other women.

Running update
Monday I got out after Mr. Judy got home. It would have been a lot nicer to run in the morning, when it was nice and cool, but Bandit needs that first morning walk, so afternoon hill repeats it was. Mr. Judy asked me if I had a good run when I got home, as he was managing a pacing Bandit who unfortunately saw me leave even though I went out a different door to try to avoid it. Good? Not really, but I got it done.

Tuesday was very hot, and again, I can’t get out in the mornings — unless I’d like to do so at about 3 am, which I don’t really need right now — so I took it to the treadmill. I tied Bandit to the desk (so he couldn’t get up on our chaise lounge); he has a large dog bed there. The treadmill doesn’t bother him at all, but I even wore headphones for the TV because I have to blast it pretty loud to hear it over the treadmill, and his bed is right underneath the tv.

The things we do for our animals.

Thursday it was very hot and humid (yes, I know I sound like a broken record, but it’s been abnormally warm here most of the time), so I ran 3 easyish miles on the treadmill. I say easyish because I decided to up the pace a bit, since I’m not able to run in the heat much and acclimate to it.

Saturday was cooler and less humid, but between dog walking and getting everyone fed and settled (even with Mr. Judy’s help), I wasn’t able to get out there until 8:30 — again, not able to run with my group but hoping maybe next weekend I’ll be able to, as we have 7 miles on tap next weekend.

I won’t say this was my most miserable run ever, far from it, but also wasn’t fun. It was lonely, it was hot (where was that predicted cloud cover?), but I got it done. That is apparently my theme song for this week: it wasn’t fun but it got done.

It was slow, but actually not too bad for me. Not considering it was mostly sunny and in the mid 70s. I didn’t watch my watch at all, my pacing was all over the place, but yup, I got it done.

I really am envious of the people who call runs because they’re simply not feeling it. How do you do that? I really wanted to do anything but run Saturday, but it was on the schedule, I’m not sick or injured, and so it was done.

Favorites of the week
Can’t say as this week was much better than last, but hey, Bandit didn’t bite anyone this week, so that’s good, right? Actually, while he has made it clear he has separation anxiety — won’t touch a kong while we’re gone, although at least he will now eat one in his crate while we’re there — he also stays in the crate without too much objection. He has made great strides in the short time we have had him.

The good news is that I haven’t had to miss a Weight Watchers meeting yet. And maybe, just maybe, I could go swim next week?

I have been busy contacting rescues, and let’s just say it’s disheartening. And that’s all I’m going to say about that for now.

You see half of my face because of the big zit. Yes, I am 54 & I still get them.

So favorites? Mr. Judy brought me roses last weekend.

Trust me — avocado + peanuts = a good thing

Sushi heals almost everything, and what it can’t heal, it makes better — am I right? I’ve particularly fallen in love with this peanut avocado roll pictured at the top of the photo above. It is exactly what the name says: an avocado roll with roasted peanuts in it. I know it sounds bizarre, but it’s so good. I think I need to try my hand at making that at home! I might even have sushi rice around here somewhere.

Remember the title? I walked around the farmer’s market after my run Saturday. I didn’t bring much money with me, but it’s been a couple of years since I’ve been able to get there.

There was a booth offering massages! Score! I have been in desperate need of a massage. Unfortunately, as I said, I didn’t have much cash with me, so I could only afford 15 minutes. It was a little slice of heaven.

I wish I’d known the top was draping funny, but I love this combo! And yes, those are crocs

This top (from Fabletics) and gym girl ultra skirt (use CRJ20 for 20% off of regularly priced items). This was post run (I did run in the skirt, but wore a different top, and changed before I remembered to take a selfie), obviously, but I like the combo so much I stayed in it all day.

And that’s a wrap:(

I love to hear from you! Answer me one of the questions below in the comments, or just comment! Let me know what you think or what’s on your mind.

What do you think about the avocado peanut combo?

Did you know crocs makes some cute shoes?

I would love to hear about your interactions with animal rescues. We’ve had some great interactions, and some not so great ones.

  1. Progress is progress, and it sounds like you’re making a little progress with Bandit?? How are Giz and Lola holding up? I hope all goes well tomorrow. I’ll be anxious to hear your report on that. Otherwise, you got it done! Yay you!! (And I just knew you were going to say you got a massage, hehe!!)

    1. Actually, Giz & Lola have been real troopers. Of course they don’t get much interaction with Bandit, and unfortunately it means they don’t get as much interaction with me as they’d like.

I’m surprised you could guess massage! It really was the last thing on my mind when I decided to take a quick walk through the farmer’s market, and they never used to have it. I was soooooo happy they did, though, especially after that run!

  2. Never tried peanut & avocado but I think I would love the combination. Glad to read you are getting your runs in despite the heat. The one thing I do NOT miss about the US is the humidity. While it is finally really really nice here, we have been lucky to have wonderful breezes and cool mornings. PERFECT summer weather. Have a great week Judy.

    1. The peanut & avocado is soooooo good! I wasn’t quite sure what it would be the first time I ordered it, but decided to just be surprised, and it turned out to be a great surprise!

Sadly, all my trips to Europe have been in the fall so I’ve never experienced a European summer. It’s usually not that humid here, at least not for long, but we’re having a very unusual summer right now. Almost TX-like, but not quite that bad. Last summer was so nice & cool . . . usually the nice summers are our reward for enduring winter, but winter wasn’t that bad this year and summer — I’m hoping we’re having the dog days of summer in July, not August!

    1. We are both sushi people (although me more than Mr. Judy), so good things coupons tend to be plentiful. And we don’t drink!

We have made great progress with Bandit, but he still definitely has serious issues.

That’s really the problem — it’s not like he’s a mean dog — he’s not. But he has issues I don’t know how to deal with, he’s not young, and we also don’t know his triggers.

Not to mention so far no rescue wants to touch him with a ten foot pole.

One of the biggest problems? How do you travel? I would never leave him with a pet sitter. Maybe a vet would board him, but I don’t know if they would. And we just can’t stay home all the time — my mom is having surgery next month, for example (not to mention we usually go visit my parents once a month).

Anyway, we’ll see what the trainer has to say today.

  3. Well, you know I’m singing the Rolling Stone’s song now… It sounds like you are having some improvement with Bandit. I hope it continues. I do know Crocs makes cute shoes! I have a pair of slingbacks that I have to take off to prove they are Crocs ’cause nobody believes me. I’m not opposed to sushi but it just something I never order. That does sound like an interesting combo. Thanks for linking, Judy.

    1. We have definitely made a lot of progress with Bandit. Although he is also highly managed & very little interaction with Gizmo & Lola.

I can’t lock Gizmo into the laundry room for the rest of his life, though. Not to mention he’s getting to the age when often diseases rear their ugly heads with cats & could require a lot more time & effort soon (knocking on wood that that isn’t so, but he’s going on 16 & I have to be realistic).

And while yes, Bandit has made huge strides, he still has serious issues and he’s getting older too (around 8), and what happens if he gets sick or injured and needs to be handled? How do we go away?

Well, that’s why we have a trainer coming.

Rescues are overwhelmed and can’t help.

But peanut avocado sushi is really, really good. 🙂

  4. We’ve adopted from shelters but never dealt with rescue organizations. One of our dogs had separation anxiety but settled down after a while – but not before she tore down some curtains and chewed some trim off the wall! I’m not good at cancelling workouts either — unless my schedule gets screwed up.

    1. We’ve never dealt with shelters, but always rescues! There are good rescues and bad rescues. There’s rescue burnout. And they’re overwhelmed with the animals who don’t have issues. Anyway . . .

Separation anxiety is really the least of Bandit’s issues. It takes time & is frustrating, but he’s coming along in that department.

The first dog we had on trial adoption? Ate our bathroom the first day when I went out to get him a crate.

And Chester had severe separation anxiety, but I got him through it, and even though Bandit is much older, I’ve no doubt we can get him through it as well.

Some of his other issues are quite severe, though.

I can understand cutting runs short or skipping them if you’re sick or injured (although sometimes when I feel a bit meh, like today, I still do them . . . and maybe I shouldn’t).

Otherwise, though, it basically doesn’t matter how cold it is, how hot it is, how much I don’t want to do it . . . it just gets done. Partly because if it doesn’t, I can get injured (and how weird is that?).

  5. I don’t know if you’ve seen my post about adopting Max (Jan. 2015). Our experience with the local shelter was less than ideal (mainly due to bad timing). But, that lead me to researching other shelters in the surrounding communities…and that’s how we found Max. And, the rest is history. It sounds like things with Bandit have gotten a tiny bit better (?)

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Ok, I read Max’s story. So glad it all worked out for you.

I’ve never dealt with a shelter (other than volunteering at one), but we’ve had numerous dealings with rescues, good & bad, and one failed adoption (because the dog had very similar issues to Bandit) — that dog actually did live with us a few days. It was hard, but we knew he wasn’t the right dog for us.

Things with Bandit are better, but mainly because he’s highly managed now that we know how serious his issues are and basically not allowed to interact much at all with Gizmo & Lola.

My husband has allergies, but luckily not to animals (and I don’t really have any). My brother, OTOH, has some major allergies so they have some sort of poo (I forget which designer breed it is).

  6. I can sympathize with working with a rescue dog who needs a lot of help. When we adopted our greyhound from a rescue, he had a lot of problems adjusting. The biggest was fear-based aggression. We worked with a positive-reinforcement trainer in our home and then followed up with obedience classes, and it was a very positive experience for all of us. That was 4 years ago, and he’s been an awesome dog ever since. Good luck with Bandit!

  7. I like guacamole but not avocado by itself. I know, I’m picky, and always have been. I hope you keep having progress with Bandit. My only experience has been with rescue groups, and we had a great one in Boston, where my parents adopted 3 cats from, and the one in DFW where I adopted Allie from. It depends on the people, but I like foster groups because the animals are in a home with human and maybe animal interaction.

    1. Fosters are great, although it doesn’t mean they won’t have their issues. Chester had a GREAT foster mom, but he still ended up with severe separation anxiety. We worked through it, though.

I love avocado in any form!

  8. You got it done! Not with all fun and smile, but you toughed it out 🙂
I like your top, I don’t think it looks draped funny.
I have dealt a few times with dogs that my hubby came home with and it tough finding any rescues to take them. It is hard, so many places seem overloaded.
I have seen cute Crocs but they won’t fit my orthotics lol hardly anything does.
I do not like Sushi…there is something about the mix of flavors…as much as I love avocado I am not sure it could make me like it.
    Your roses are beautiful 🙂

    1. I do understand the rescue situation. I’ve done some (rather minor) rescue work. But it’s beyond frustrating when most won’t even send a replay. Again, I understand, but when you’re on the other side and trying so, so hard . . .

The peanut avocado roll is just that — peanuts, avocado, and rice. There’s no fish (although I totally love raw fish). But hey, that’s what makes the world go round!

  9. I had one of those crappy runs Saturday. I always decide ahead of time how much I’ll do. I decided on 4 miles but after 3 I was so close to throwing in the towel. My motivation to keep going was remembering when I was injured and I couldn’t run when I really wanted too. I guess we each have our ways of getting the job done. My hats off to you for getting in what you did this week. I do hope things turn around for the rescue efforts for Bandit.

  10. Progress IS progress!! Sending continued prayers. I love avocado, and I love peanuts, but not together. If I am in training, I never miss a run. Ever. When training for my first half in 2007 I ran my 5 miler with bronchitis. It was ugly. LOL!!! I am not a fan of crocs, but the ones you have on are so cute!!!

    1. Crocs really does have a lot of cute shoes out there (cute for casual shoes, anyway).

I have missed runs, due to injury or illness, but that’s it.

You’d be surprised how good peanuts & avocado are — I was!

  11. You look adorable! I’m not a crocs girl, but they are really cute!

I’m also sorry you’re struggling with Bandit. I just went back and caught up with what’s going on. If you ever need to chat, please feel free to email me – we have a pug who is also very damaged, from a previous owner. Happily, we have not had to surrender or euthanize him, but those were conversations we had to have when some of his behaviors made themselves known. We have only worked with a pug rescue and they were really good. I have seen dogs up for rescue with them where it has been specified that the animals need an alpha owner/no other animals/history of aggression/etc, so there is always hope.

Hugs to you. It’s so hard when things don’t work out.

  12. Looks like you got some good training runs in Judy, despite the hot weather. That massage must have felt great – even if you only had enough cash for like 15 minutes or so? Every runner appreciates/deserves a great massage! 🙂

  13. That peanut avocado combo sounds great to me! The roses are pretty- very nice of Mr. Judy. So maybe a little improvement with Bandit this week? A 15 minute massage sounds heavenly right now!

    1. The massage, the roses, the peanut avocado roll . . . all great.

Bandit has been improving, but there are still problems and probably always will be.

We had a really terrible night last night (nothing happened with him, but it was just bad. I’ll probably be blogging about it).

  14. I would have said massage. I guess I know you.

It sounds like you are keeping Bandit. I applaud your patience. I couldn’t be trapped home like that.

I like sushi but I prefer other things so I hardly ever eat it.

Hope we can run together again sometime.

    1. It’s really funny because massage was really the last thing on my mind when I went there.

We are still hoping to rehome Bandit, but for the moment we’re fostering him. It’s been hard & it’s not what I want to do, but the only alternative is very grim.

I’m getting out more now — I’m going to go swimming tomorrow which will probably be outside his comfort zone but that’s just the way it’s gotta be. He was created for z couple of hours while I ran this morning (I didn’t run a couple of hours, but changing, warming up, etc. meant he had to stay in there a while). He survived.
