Light at the end of the tunnel?: 7/18-24 Weekly Wrap

The week started off rough, meeting with the trainer and Gizmo’s sudden “illness” (read about it here), but ended on a high note when we finally got to have a rescue evaluate Bandit. It was another tough, draining week, but we have more of a routine going and we are hopeful that things will continue to get better.

I’m wrapping it up  with the Weekly Wrap from Holly @ Hohoruns and Tricia @ Misssipppiddlin. It’s all about supporting anyone who lives an healthy lifestyle.

Running update
Monday was a long day, and I knew it would be, as we were meeting with the trainer, but I didn’t know just how long it would actually end up being. It was hot, again, so I ran on the treadmill, and eased back on the pace simply because all of the stress going on in our life.

Tuesday was blessedly much cooler, and I knew it would be, so I saved my hill repeats for it. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to get out there until 9 am, losing a lot of the shade. I really needed that run, though. And it was faster than last week (with one more hill repeat). And a woman walking her dog said how much she admired me, that she could never do that, although she looked quite fit — that always raises your spirits!

Yup, Thursday the heat came back. It wasn’t terribly humid, but again, I couldn’t do a morning run, so I ran on the treadmill (with headphones) again. Despite the fact that Bandit was crated upstairs while I was running downstairs.

Saturday I finally got to run with my group again. Sort of. Unfortunately my group run buddy is down with an injury (unclear how serious it is yet), and so while I got to chat with friends before/after, I ran solo for the most part. Most people are faster, one maybe is slower.

It was quite humid and in the mid 70s at the start at 6:30 am. Which is why I told Mr. Judy I really need to run with my group from here on out — we’re getting up to longer mileage and with the hot summer we’re having, it’s so imperative that I get out there early. So Mr. Judy was on complete animal control (feeding, getting Giz in the laundry room, taking both dogs for short walks) while I was out running.

I won’t lie and say this was a fun run; it wasn’t. Thankfully at that time in the morning there was a fair amount of shade. I am also happy to report that I ran it about 2 minutes faster than I did last year at this time, when it was 10 degrees cooler!

Some of that may actually be due to the fact that I was solo. My run buddy, who races faster than me, tends to struggle on the LSDs. It begs the question would I be better if I were with her, and therefore running slower?

I did not have much in the way of goals for this run. I started out just noting the time each mile, and running by effort, trying to pay attention to my form. I decided to push the pace a bit miles 5 and 6, and while I had intended to let that last mile be a cooldown, by that point I really just wanted to be done with this run so it was almost as fast as my first mile (when I was running with someone for a bit).

Favorites of the week
We finally met with some rescue people to evaluate Bandit. Their opinion? He’s fine. A little leery of some handling, but ultimately pretty good overall.

We got the distinct impression that they thought I was overreacting. Why does he have to be separated from your other animals? Um, both the vet and the trainer thought it was a good idea? Because I haven’t liked the way he’s gone after them when he had access to furniture (although he stopped when I told him to and on the rare times he comes nose to nose with them he seems fine).

I have found rescue people tend to be this way. Some like animals more than humans. They also basically dismissed the fact that he bit the vet with the “little dogs are just that way”) (remember my thoughts on that in this week’s TOLT?).

Granted, I only have experience with Chester and Lola, but that was not my experinece — at all — with either one of them. Not even taking them to a strange vet for the first time.

I don’t agree with them. On the other hand, they are willing to list him on their site. And maybe talk to one of the rescues, that specializes more in small dogs, one of the first ones I contacted and got turned down at, about listing him on theirs, as well.

Could I be overreacting? Maybe.Could it be that they aren’t threatened by him and therefore aren’t threatening to him? Could it be because we met in a neutral location, and not in our home? Could it be that as we get more comfortable with him, he gets more comfortable, too?

It’s a step in the right direction, anyway. Obviously it’s not as though he’s going to be adopted tomorrow, but I’m so glad to finally have people who are willing to work with us.

I’ve been waiting for this since the 4th!

On to some other favorites this week. Chocolate Peanut Butter ice cream. You can’t see the mini peanut butter cups in it. We left Bandit at home and we took Lola to my favorite local ice cream place (she got a little of Mr. Judy’s Black Cherry ice cream).

Relaxing in Skirtsports with Giz

More Skirtsports outfits. I love how they great for running, for dogwalking, for relaxing. I got complemented on my skirt on my run Saturday (Use code CRJ20 for 20% off full priced items).

Love the Switzer skirt!

I’ve been working on my post You are not a number for a while, and I got a lot of good feedback on it. In case you missed it, I’m talking about the numbers we use to define ourselves and there’s a very short video from me at the end.

Wouldn’t you know I’d just bought my first pair of Oofos when I won these?

Last but not least, I won a giveaway from Small Town Runner a while ago. It took a while for all of it to come, but I won a pair of Oofos and a sampler from Skout Backcountry. Thanks again, Raina!

And that’s a wrap!

I love to hear from you! Answer me one of the questions below in the comments, or just comment! Let me know what you think or what’s on your mind.

Did you write a post you’re proud of recently?

Do you find rescue people can be a bit odd?

What’s your favorite flavor of ice cream?

  1. I am SO glad to hear you have some positive news regarding Bandit!! You saw my post about Max’s adoption, so you know my experience with rescues LOL (Actually, we had a very positive experience with the shelter Max came from, we just had bad timing with our local one). Favorite ice cream? Cookies -n- Cream 😉

    1. Cookies n Cream is a good one. 🙂

None of our dogs have ever been easy, but Bandit takes it to a new level. I’d like an easy dog, I really would.

Things are moving in the right direction, but it’s not as if he’s going to be adopted anytime soon, and in the meantime, it’s really confusing trying to figure out if it was just circumstances, or all the professionals we’ve consulted who’ve warned he could be a danger and should be separated from our own animals are right.

  2. I’m glad you’ve have some positive news about Bandit. Maybe he will get adjusted eventually? Do you know I’ve never run in one of my a skirts on a training run? I SAVE them for races. All these years. Why? IDK. I finally broke down and bought Oofos. They feel too low at the heel. I like my Crocs better. Blue Bell’s Triple Caramel was always my favorite ice cream. I don’t even know if they make it any longer. Great jobs on your runs this week! Thanks for linking, Judy.

  3. I do know what you mean about people with an agenda. On the other hand, it’s not always fair to judge a dog by one incident. The true personality probably lies somewhere in between! It sounds like you are hoping to outplace Bandit, so I hope that works out for you!

    1. There’s no doubt that incident has colored my view of Bandit, but it’s also not just based on that.

There’s also the opinion of about 4 professionals, and his own erratic growling at random people/dogs while walking.

Don’t get me wrong, he’s not a mean dog, but he does definitely have some issues and I’m not sure I completely agree with the rescue’s assessment (and yes, he growled at one of them at one point, too, but let the other one handle him in all sorts of ways).

OTOH, he’s an awesome dog in many ways, but he is going to make our lives very, very difficult if we were to keep him (most likely). And I’ve had difficult for years, between the various illnesses of my animals. Seriously, I’ve basically been taking care of very sick animals for the last 15 years, with a brief break here and there. And Bandit wasn’t someone I chose or went into knowing all the facts.

  4. Hahaha, yes, I suppose rescue people can be a bit odd, but remember, they’re there for the animals, not the humans. (and that’s all I’m going to say about that, lol, ;D) I am glad you’re seeing a light at the end of the tunnel!

Great job on the long run and pushing yourself. As long as it felt good, that’s really all that matters. You’re soon to start training here for Phoenix, aren’t you?

The sparkle skirts… do the shorts ride up at all and cause chafing? I think they’re great and am thinking about getting one!

Ice cream — Rocky Road!! Although, I can only have ice cream at the most once a month (dairy and I don’t get along). Growing old sucks, lol!

    1. I know, but the animals & humans are inextricably linked together. And I’ve definitely seen rescue people deny people for no apparent reason, or be very judgemental/suspicious (aka, why do I want to rehome Bandit?). The volunteer kept saying “fair enough” to my reasons like we go to my elderly parents once a month and we’re not going to be able to bring him nor can we leave him alone all that time — you could just see her thinking there’s nothing wrong with this dog but there is with this human.

Anyway. Technically I started training for Phoenix back when my group started at the end of May — but we’re really beginning to get into now, cause I don’t generally run over about 5 miles if I’m not training for anything!

Both sparkleskirts & skirtsports the shorts don’t ride up. Skirtsports have more different styles — some of the ones with shorter legs have grippers, and I’m fine in them for shorter runs, but they can chafe (on me) for longer runs. The ones without grippers I haven’t had any chafing, EXCEPT the thinner shorties on some of the Gym Girl Ultra — I’ve had problems with those, only if I put a sharp gel packet or gogosqueeze packet in the pockets — again, only on longer runs.

I’ve tried almost every style and can give you some advice if you want. 🙂

Rocky Road. Yum! I’m not actually an ice cream fiend, but I do like it after long runs in the summer, and we’re having a very hot summer.

  5. I am glad you are making progress with Bandit. A lot of animal people are strange, lol but if they will work with you, that is good! I hope it helps.
You got a lot done this week, so that is great!
The recovery sandals are supposed to be really good for you 🙂
I missed you are not a number, so I will have to go back and catch it! probably tomorrow because I am off to bed. I hope you have a good week.

    1. Well, we’ve gotten into more of a routine with Bandit, so that helps everyone. Managing everyone is still a pain, and I haven’t seen Giz since this morning which kind of worries me but I’ve got to go out . . .

  6. Love that Switzer skir!
I dropped off my daughter at a friend’s who recently rescued a Boxer and they’re having issues with aggression toward their other dog, potty training, etc. A trainer observed them and said it was something (wish I remembered) to the effect of Limited Resource syndrome. aka the dog fights for what he perceives as “his”. Can be food, toy, owner, etc. So guests are instructed to pet/pay attention to the “first” dog first and feed him as well so the new dog knows those things are not “his”. I’ve not heard this before but I understand it’s working for them.

    1. There’s also a training technique called NILIF (nothing in life is free) — IOW, you want something, you have to do something to get it. We’re using that, too, but the truth is he’s so highly managed that there isn’t a lot of incidences to use it.

  7. That ice cream sounds amazing. I love chocolate and peanut butter, with candy chunks! Ben and Jerry’s used to make a peanut butter ice cream with reese’s chunks, but stopped it, or at least I can’t find it anymore 😦

    1. The last Ben & Jerry’s I got was the Tonight Dough, but I was actually disappointed in it & didn’t think it worth the calories. Didn’t eat much of it at all. Mr. Judy is working on it.

  8. Great week! I’m intrigued by the Bodylicious workouts! Sounds like things are moving positively in the right direction with Bandilt. Yeah, it could be any of those reasons for why the rescue gave that evaluation.

    1. I haven’t seen your guest post — guess I’ll have to go check it out!

It’s not usually so hot & humid here. There are times I really wish I didn’t have dogs so I could just run whenever I damn well please!

  9. I’m proud of the post I published today – it’s a recipe, but from the perspective of a guy who struggles to keep order in the kitchen! I’ve dealt only once with rescue people, in trying to adopt a girl I fell in love with, Lexi – but it didn’t work out. I love any ice cream flavor that involves cookie dough!

I love that you posed these questions at the end of your post.

  10. Late to the party, having just today returned from a week in NH (I don’t post that we are not at home), and so happy to see some good news about Bandit. XX XX crossed fingers that matters continue to improve.

I have a 261 shirt which I love. I’m not buying any more sports clothes right now, but man, I do like the Switzer skirt, I’m quite sure in part because I admire Kathrine so. Have you read “Marathon Woman?” It’s not only a great story, but because she is a writer by trade it is also a well written one.

I love love love the photo of Gizmo looking at you so lovingly.

I just bought a pair of Oofos, too. The arch support is worth the investment. So comfortable and good for one’s feet.

    1. I didn’t know that Katherine Switzer was a writer by trade — I’ve read some of her fitness books, but not Marathon Woman (it is on my list, tho).

I try not to let on when I’m away either! Not always easy.
