To race or not to race: 8/8-14 Weekly Wrap

Mr. Judy has some nasty allergy/cold thing going on (turned out to be the office virus). I had a slightly scratchy throat Sunday night, and laid there wondering if I should take an extra rest day. I didn’t, and I had a great run on Monday. And that was the only run I had all week.

I didn’t DNS the race, by the way, because I never signed up for it (you can do day of race registration). Same thing happened last year, but I wasn’t sick, I was dealing with an IT flareup then.

This will be one of my shorter weekly wraps, as mostly I laid on the couch all week long, but I’m still wrapping it up with the Weekly Wrap from Holly @ Hohoruns and Tricia @ Misssipppiddlin because life and sickness happens and it’s all part of training.

Running update

Monday

As bad as last week’s speedwork went, that’s pretty much how good this week went. I just went straight to the bike path. I set up my watch correctly.

Unfortunately, the lowest it will go for distance alerts is quarter miles, and of course this week I actually did the 200m — and the watch only has kilometers and miles as units, so it meant I still had to watch the watch. But it worked pretty well.

After my one run this week

I wish I could have gotten out earlier, but of course there was that pesky dogwalk as usual. Thankfully the path is mostly shady, and my later intervals were faster than my earlier intervals, so I was quite happy with this run.

Good thing, since it was the last exercise I got all week.

Favorites of the week
I sincerely hope this week was my rock bottom.I ran a low grade fever until about Sunday. By Thursday I knew I wouldn’t be racing. By Friday I knew I wouldn’t even be getting my long run in. I was beginning to feel better, but I was still “running” a low grade fever and being a couch potato and not wanting to eat — as much as I hate missing a long run, I knew it was better to rest up and get well. I still have almost a couple of months until my half, so as long as I’m smart about not overdoing it as I get back to training, I’ll be fine.

Could I have done my long run today? Sure. But just because you could, doesn’t mean you should. And I know when I get this kind of illness the only thing that works is rest. Lots and lots of rest. And if I don’t rest, then I risk getting even sicker by pushing too soon.

It can always be worse — if I was going to be sick, this week wasn’t a bad week — aside from missing the race — but the weather was also horribly humid on Saturday — and not being able to go to my parents tomorrow, as we’d planned, since my brother and his family will be there. I don’t want to infect my parents, and this virus ran through my husband’s office pretty good so it’s pretty darn contagious.

Watching and nails done

I did, however, have plenty of time to watch the Olympics. Plus my Outlander DVDs (*affiliate link, almost done). I even did my nails today — don’t ask my why, just that I’ve been meaning to do them for quite some time now. I

Had to get dressed cause of the dogs

I have a lot of joggers (fancy word for nice sweatpants), and I’ve been putting them to good use this week. Even though it’s been hot, I would get chilled because the AC blows right on the couch and of course because of my temperature, as well, so I found the joggers kept me warmer. Usually I’d be in shorts or a dress.

And I wore skirtsports (Code CRJ20 for 20% off regular prcies) to the chiropractor

My ankle is very happy with my inactivity. My chiropractor has mused that maybe it’s arthritis (but why would it come on out of the blue?) and that running inflames it. I guess one of these days I’ll have to go to a podiatrist and get a definitive diagnosis.

And that’s a wrap!

I love to hear from you! Answer me one of the questions below in the comments, or just comment! Let me know what you think or what’s on your mind.

Would you keep running even if it made something ache?

Do you sign up for races early or wait til the last minute?

Do your own nails or get them done?

  1. My nails remain undone 😳😳 I realised that even during four months off work I never got around to having a manicure or pedicure or doing them myself. I realise that I’m low maintenance! Ironically though the thing that got me started on my fitness journey was trying to paint my toenails and realising that I couldn’t bend my leg up enough to reach my nails, either my belly was too big or my hip flexors were too weak! No trouble now😊😊

    1. I’ve always been pretty flexible. Not gymnast flexible, mind you, but touching my toes is never a problem.

It has been many months since I’d done mine. Nail polish remover destroys my nails. For months! But they’re strong now, and I’ve got a new supposedly gentler one to try, so I had been thinking about doing it for a while. Carving out that hour, even while sick, isn’t always so easy to do though!

  2. Hopefully the gold medal in olympics watching will heal you and you’ll be up around next week.
I do my toenails sometimes but not my fingernails. Too many organic solvents at work the seem to find their way into my gloves.

  3. The races I like to do sell out in hours, so I always sign up months in advance. For smaller races, I’ll do race day registration if it’s not likely to sell out, but I find it harder to make myself show up and run instead of just running on my own. I hope you’re feeling better now!

    1. I’m feeling better, but still not “good” (as I keep reminding my husband).

If I’d felt good, I would probably have done the race. Maybe. It was a very nasty day weather wise and it’s an hour drive!

Turns out the friends I was going to go with didn’t go anyway . . .

  4. I took a DNS for a race today just because I didn’t feel like it, and I don’t feel bad at all. But I don’t have a lot of love for races in general and was just doing it for fun, so no biggie. I’ve read the Outlander series but haven’t watched it. Feel better!

  5. Sorry to hear you are Mr. J were sick. You know we’ve been dealing with the same here and now my younger daughter caught it. Hopefully she’ll be through it before school starts on Wednesday. I almost always sign up for races early, although in your case I’m glad it worked out.

    1. It did work out, especially since the friend I was going to go with didn’t go anyway. So now I don’t feel so bad (especially as it was a horribly humid day and the race didn’t start until 9 am).

Good luck on getting everyone healthy again yourself!

  6. I’m glad you got the rest you needed. It stinks, but in the long run it’s better to listen to your body! The Olympics have been fun to watch but has thrown off my sleep – I wish the main events weren’t on so late! I haven’t given myself a manicure in a long time…I tend to be too cheap to go to a salon, even though they do a MUCH better job than I could!

    1. I tape the Olympics. You’d be amazed — with skipping through the commercials and fast forwarding through the instant replays, I can watch 4 hours in about 2.

It just means that I’m always watching it a day after it happened, but I’ve also mostly managed to not see what happened ahead of time.

I don’t mind doing my own nails, but it’s just the time involved. The real problem is that remover destroys my nails. I’ve got a new one to try out, so we’ll see what happens.

  7. I just signed up for the marathon I have been training for all summer and it is in 27 days. I tend to wait, I have had to skip some races because of injuries and that is no fun.
I hope you feel better soon!

    1. Wow, that takes some guts to train for a marathon without even signing up! Or motivation.

I like being signed up for my halfs early, because it does give me motivation to train. Although I have a tendency towards injury, too, thankfully I have been able to run all my halfs. Some definitely weren’t a whole lot of fun, and I try real hard to train smart so that I don’t have that problem but you just never know.

    1. Most of the time I really do like to pick up my packet before a race — this particular race is an hour away though!

I like to be signed up early, but I also don’t want a DNS, so it just depends.

  8. I’m sorry to hear you’ve been under the weather. I hope you are feeling better already. Ha – you’ve medaled in watching the Olympics! Most of the time, I wait until the last minute to register. I know I pay a little more that way, but I do not like paying for them really early and then something come up and I can’t go. Pretty nails! Thanks for linking, Judy!

  9. Hope you are feeling better… no fun being ill especially in the summer.
I usually do my own nails unless I do a semi permanent (2 or 3 times a year).
I sign up for races way in advance because I like big races and they usually sell out pretty quickly.

    1. It’s funny how all runners are totally different — some preferring to sign up early, others wanting to wait until almost the last minute.

Thank you, I am feeling better. I even ran today! Thankfully before it poured.

  10. You know I always sign up for races way in advance. I odn’t like to pay more.

It was actually a fun race but a tough one (as you know). But you adjust your expectations.

I always get my nails done – ANC French and it lasts for a month. My toes, on the other hand, I do myself because Iike colors and that doesn’t last long.

Hope to see you on a run or at a race some day.

      1. That’s ok. Whenever.

I do slack off on my toes in the winter when no one sees them but when I wear sandals, I have to have them with polish.

  11. I hope you are on the mend! I usually don’t worry about my nails… I’m so hard on them, it usually doesn’t last too long. I will go get a pedicure, about once a month or so.

    1. Yeah, the polish needs to be removed already; I did them Sunday. Oh well. If the remover doesn’t actually destroy my nails, I’ll try some Gel polish again.

And thank you, Vicki, yes, I feel a lot better now.

  12. I’m pretty hard headed, I’d keep running as long as I could, probably too long. I try and sign up for races, I go in spurts! I’ll sign up for a bunch then sit back and race a few and sign up for a bunch more. It’s a vicious cycle! I do my own nails when I up and decide to paint them, it’s not very often but I do love a good pedi!!! I’m glad to see your back running! 🙂
