Thank you, Holly, for suggesting a word that doesn’t work my brain so hard:
Irritable: Having or showing a tendency to be easily annoyed or made angry
I am afraid I got the irritable gene from my father. Although I can be very patient, too, and I have had to call patience into play over and over the last couple of months, dealing with my parents and Bandit.
I could easily write a whole post devoted to Mr. Judy, too, but then I might not actually make it to our 31st anniversary, which is just a week away, by the way.
I think instead I will write about things that make us runners irritable.
I find shopping too stressful. I get hot and flustered and irritated and feel sick after I’ve bought something.
–Alison Goldfrapp
I threw in this quote because it amused me, plain and simple. Because I am so the opposite: I love the hunt for something good when shopping, and after I’ve bought something, I feel happy. Not necessarily a good thing. I asked what your other therapies, aside from running, were a while ago — retail therapy definitely works for me, if not for my bank balance!
Back to the topic in hand, here is just a few of the things that makes runners irritable:
- Weather that’s too cold
- Weather that’s too hot
- Weather that’s too windy
- A forecast that is totally wrong
- Too much sun
- Not enough sun
- A pebble in our shoes
- Chafing
- Injuries
- Not being able to run
- Not running slow enough
- Not running fast enough
- Missing a BQ/PR/AG award by just seconds and/or minutes
- Races that start late
- Races that start too late in the day
- Inaccurate course descriptions
- Courses that are too short or too long
- Course marshals that don’t properly direct you
- Other runners that don’t acknowledge us
- Being called a jogger
- How long is this half marathon or marathon?
- Running out of promised aid at a race
- Running out of medals at a race
- No food left at the end of a race
- No good food left at the end of a race
- Cars that try to run us over
- Dogs off leash
Geez, I could go on and on. By now you’re just assuming all runners are irritable, picky a$$holes. Yet most runners are the kindest, most generous people I know. Just don’t get in between us and the fulfillment of our dreams/goals/food!
Tell me in the comments:
What makes you irritable when it comes to running?
What makes you irritable in life in general?
Are you an irritable person in general?
That’s a great list. I can’t think of anything else to add. I got the irritable gene from my Dad. Luckily it’s mostly balanced by the patience gene from my Mom. Usually it’s people who are I considerate that piss me off.

Love the list. For me it’s food! Don’t get in between me and my aubergines! Other than that I am only irritated if my Garmin switches from miles to km and I don’t notice it. So you are absolutely right!

You know, not many people would say that about eggplants. 😊

Oh, for sure I get the irritable gene from my dad. But this past year, I’ve been more irritable than I’ve ever been in my life. Is it menopause? I will say that life has certainly thrown some lemons at me this year. Maybe it’s that.

Menopause can definitely push you over the edge. I warn Mr. Judy sometimes when I’m really irritated. Of course sometimes there’s no warning. 😊

I think you got them all.
I got irritated yesterday when my phone died during my run. No more pics!! Grrr..
I hope I am a positive person but I can whine like everyone else.

Well, I don’t think I mentioned rain. Or ice. I probably could’ve gone on.
I definitely think you’re a positive person.

Oh my gosh, “Other runners that don’t acknowledge us,” YES, that annoys me tremendously!! And my list would include runners who wear perfume or cologne. Honestly. Just embrace the stink! 😉

Well, then you’d probably LOVE running with me, LOL.

How about “you’re almost there” at mile 18 of a marathon? Are you freaking kidding me? I am the stressful shopper! I don’t enjoy it at all — but boy do I love to order stuff. I love that PLACE ORDER button. 🙂

Or mile 12 of a half . . . inserts eye roll . . . but geez, mile 18? Not even close!
Unfortunately for me, I’m an equal opportunity shopper. Online & in RL.

You’re not almost there until you can see the finish line!!!

This is great! I’m pretty sure I’ve been irritated by everything on that list at one time or another! Right now I’m irritated by injuries, not being able to run, hot flashes and unwanted belly fat thanks to menopause!

All of these are so true! I also get irritated when people don’t line up in their correct pace corral or line up at the start of a 5k when they should be further back… sometimes it may be an honest mistake, but it’s dangerous as they get almost plowed over!

ALLLL TRUE! Omg, a short course is so frustrating!! and cars that try to run me over…yes!
I love your closing statement LOL

the main thing that irritates me most (and not just with running), is when people are rude or inconsiderate/disrespectful. Drivers not paying attention, runners not aware of the people around them,….there are lots of examples of this….Thanks for making me smile, Judy 😉

The too much sun one really irritates me– I struggle after mile 10 in the full sunlight!! My kids always seem to cut a tooth or are up all night before a big race—murphy’s law I guess?!

Wow, I think you covered pretty much all of the things that irritate runners!
I’m generally a pretty happy-go-lucky glass half-full kind of girl and I got that attitude from my dad.
