Nuisance: a person, thing, or situation that is annoying or that causes trouble or problems
The quote above is so true — I say it often, happiness is a choice. We can’t change many things, but we can change the way we feel about them. Yet that’s not the nuisance I’m going to write about in this post. Although it’s a great future topic!
The nuisances runners put up with
It is little wonder that so many people never get started with running, for there is little doubt that running is filled with nuisances:
- Aches and pains
- Bad weather
- Chafing
- Shoe companies changing your favorite shoes
- Runners who don’t acknowledge you
- Work/life getting in the way of your runs
In fact, I wrote up a list of 27 ways to irritate runners when irritate was our Wednesday Word.
To the non-runner there are so many nuisances associated with running that it seems that there is no reason to even attempt to run. I’ve already written about that, obviously, so I’m going in a slightly different direction here.
You have to recognize the difference . . .
. . . between a nuisance and a real pain.
And there is definitely a difference! Swelling, tingling, pain that persists after your run, pain that alters your gait, pain that increases during your run, shortness of breath, faintness — all of these are signs that you need to seek professional help.
Your body is really an incredible machine. And it talks to you all the time. Learn to listen to it and recognize the difference between a nuisance and a real pain.
One thing I know for sure
If you run, there will be nuisances. I’ve written about them before; I’m sure I’ll write about them again. I also write often about all the benefits of running, because the benefits far outweigh the nuisances.

Tell me in the comments:
What running nuisance have you “run into”?
Have you learned the difference between a nuisance and a real pain?
What are your warning signs that it’s more than a nuisance?
Running nuisances….piriformis and calves. I do know the difference.

Oh the nuisances of running but the joy surely outweighs them right? .
My biggest nuisance right now is my arthritis in my knee. It is limiting me in my running but I am pushing through it and making it work.

I wouldn’t describe the arthritis as just a nuisance! You’re a BAMR. 🙂

Yes, it is essential to notice nuisances and make sure they don’t deserve more attention!

Plantar fasciitis is by far my biggest nuisance!

Again, I feel that is MUCH more than a nuisance. My ankle was a nuisance, but it didn’t cause me to take a break from running and wasn’t ever truly painful.

Such a great post! I think that oftentimes runners do not differentiate between a nuisance and real pain. They end up running with real pain and end up injuring themselves even more.

Definitely. Been there, done that . . . although I’ve been pretty lucky to not have a serious injury so far.

Running shoe companies changing their shoes! SO MUCH YES! Brooks has changed my favorite shoes TWICE now, so I am on the hunt for a new shoe yet again!

I know they’re TRYING to do a good thing, but still.

Right? Brooks has done it to me twice. First with the Ravenna’s, and then the Launch. I am on the hunt to find some online because when they switched from the 2’s to the 3’s they widened the toebox and I can’t stand them now.

This is a terrific post! Yep, I ran way too long with my nuisance knee pain and boom, I paid the price. But your advice completely echoed my doctor’s when I asked about running with arthritis — he counseled being guided by pain level. For me, the pain finally outweighed the benefits and became more than a nuisance.

It’s so sad when pain derails us from doing the things we love. 😦

I, too, am so annoyed by runners who can’t acknowledge me back. This happened just yesterday – stared straight ahead as if I wasn’t there… Grrr!
Even though I’m late in reading your last week’s Wednesday Word post, I’m grateful that you linked up!

You know it’s funny, everyone says they’re annoyed by runners who don’t acknowledge a greeting, yet it begs the question who’s doing it, LOL!
