Is it a Nuisance — or not?

nuisance

Nuisance: a person, thing, or situation that is annoying or that causes trouble or problems

The quote above is so true — I say it often, happiness is a choice. We can’t change many things, but we can change the way we feel about them. Yet that’s not the nuisance I’m going to write about in this post. Although it’s a great future topic!

The nuisances runners put up with
It is little wonder that so many people never get started with running, for there is little doubt that running is filled with nuisances:

  • Aches and pains
  • Bad weather
  • Chafing
  • Shoe companies changing your favorite shoes
  • Runners who don’t acknowledge you
  • Work/life getting in the way of your runs

In fact, I wrote up a list of 27 ways to irritate runners when irritate was our Wednesday Word.

To the non-runner there are so many nuisances associated with running that it seems that there is no reason to even attempt to run. I’ve already written about that, obviously, so I’m going in a slightly different direction here.

You have to recognize the difference . . .
. . . between a nuisance and a real pain.

And there is definitely a difference! Swelling, tingling, pain that persists after your run, pain that alters your gait, pain that increases during your run, shortness of breath, faintness — all of these are signs that you need to seek professional help.

Your body is really an incredible machine. And it talks to you all the time. Learn to listen to it and recognize the difference between a nuisance and a real pain.

One thing I know for sure
If you run, there will be nuisances. I’ve written about them before; I’m sure I’ll write about them again. I also write often about all the benefits of running, because the benefits far outweigh the nuisances.

What running nuisance have you “run into”?

Have you learned the difference between a nuisance and a real pain?

What are your warning signs that it’s more than a nuisance?

      1. Right? Brooks has done it to me twice. First with the Ravenna’s, and then the Launch. I am on the hunt to find some online because when they switched from the 2’s to the 3’s they widened the toebox and I can’t stand them now.

  1. This is a terrific post! Yep, I ran way too long with my nuisance knee pain and boom, I paid the price. But your advice completely echoed my doctor’s when I asked about running with arthritis — he counseled being guided by pain level. For me, the pain finally outweighed the benefits and became more than a nuisance.

  2. I, too, am so annoyed by runners who can’t acknowledge me back. This happened just yesterday – stared straight ahead as if I wasn’t there… Grrr!

Even though I’m late in reading your last week’s Wednesday Word post, I’m grateful that you linked up!
