Goodbye is so hard to say: 1/23-29 Weekly Wrap

I kind of feel like I’m on repeat lately — tired, missing sunshine, slightly stressed, some good days, some meh days . . . it might be mild, but it’s still winter! Oh, and don’t worry about the post title — nothing dire, we’ll get to that in the favorites of the week.

  • Tuesday: 3 easy miles on treadmill, shoveling ice (not kidding)
  • Wednesday: Pahla B ST, Trim & Tone Pilates Total Body& Stretch, Shoveling ice 45 minutes (yeah, you read that right)
  • Thursday:  Pahla B Core, Dogwalk, 5 miles easy, YFPR Hips
  • Friday: Dogwalk, 3 easy miles
  • Saturday: Dogwalk, a semi-restful rest day
  • Sunday: YFPR Align & Alleviate, 15k

Tuesday


A nice snow/sleet/freezing rain storm overnight kept me on the treadmill. Which actually didn’t feel too bad.

I procrastinated until it clouded over again. I didn’t wear sunglasses, and then the sun peeked out at times. I got Bandit ready to run with me, and then he didn’t want to run. My capris kept falling lower on my hips than I wanted, so I kept having to tug them back up.

Don’t you just hate days like that?

It was definitely easier without Bandit. Faster, too. I wouldn’t really call it “easy”, but I knew I was kind of tired from shoveling the snow the day before and thought about switching my easy 3 tomorrow to today; as usual, once I got started, I figured I might as well just get it done.

Friday


The sun is just taunting us now. It peeks out every now and again, but in general, it’s still really, really gray. It was also really windy. I felt warm when I walked the dogs, but I felt very comfortable running — very glad I didn’t change tops as I was considering.

I’ve been kind of tired again this week — no doubt lack of sun is a major player there — so I just ran without watching my watch. My pace came in a bit slower than the suggested pace, but I knew that Sunday’s long run will probably be faster than the suggested pace — which is exactly why I didn’t try to push it in the first place.

Sunday


This was my first time running the 15k distance at our supported long runs  — and also my first time being DFL. Which is fine.

When I told Darlene I was worried about getting lost, she thought I was worried about being last. No, actually, but there were long stretches with no signs, no volunteers, and I did worry at times about being lost — thankfully it never happened.

Sometimes the course was marked, but for long stretches . . . nothing


The weather was mild, there were a couple of aid stops (but I carried water with me too, thank goodness), and there was food afterwards. Not bad for free!

Favorites of the week
Still not much going on. Some baking, a little too much eating of said baking, out to eat, still running. Rinse, lather, repeat.

The goodbye in the subject title refers to donating some running clothes. I donate clothes all the time, but sometimes it’s hard to let some go. Even when I haven’t worn it in a long time. Not so much the running clothes (although there’s that), but the regular clothes.

I actually do have clothes I’ve held onto for years, and then worn — and been glad I held onto them. But there are others I’m pretty sure I’m not going to wear, but sometimes, it’s just hard to let go.

  1. Oh man, I just checked to see when the Utah Valley Marathon is and it’s the same weekend we will be in Chicago for our son’s graduation; otherwise, I would have entered for a chance to win. We’ve been wanting to go back to Utah for a visit for a couple of years, and this would have been a fun reason!

    I’m the same way about getting rid of old running clothes…

  2. Been working and if the sun peeks out, I miss it. I was so happy to see it at the race today. I was glad to get rid of a lot of old running clothes. I need to de-clutter my closets – they are full yet I wear the same outfits.

    1. Oh, obviously I got rid of some, too.

      It’s not running clothes so much. It’s regular clothes! And I get rid of them regularly too. But there are probably some items I should get rid of I’m having a hard time parting with.

  3. The sunshine (or lack of it) is a HUGE game-changer. Thankfully, we had non-stop sun yesterday for the very cold 5K…but for today’s 5-miler? It peeked out right around mile 4.25. So, yeah. I’m getting better about donating running clothes, but some of the event shirts are hard to part with (even though I seldom ever wear them and have no interest in having a blanket made from them). The struggle is real.

  4. As one raised in a gray part of the country, I know all too well, that sunshine completely affects my mood- My coworker uses a sun-light, which seems to help. I think fresh air and running year-round also helps 🙂

  5. We’re on track to have the cloudiest January on record. Literally not one peek of sun in 7 days. It definitely wears on me. Yes, I donate old running clothes. Those original Skirt Sports I thought I still had are gone. Oh well.

  6. January and February can be really tiring and kind of meh. We’re all going through it. Just keep running, the sun will eventually peek again!! Hope everything is okay with your Dad again. You mentioned last week that he was hospitalized. Congrats on running Utah! That should be fun and a beautiful course!

      You have a good memory. My Dad is home now. It’ll be an ongoing thing, and he’ll be 91 in a couple of months (God willing), so it is what it is. The body is not made to live forever, but then again, he’s a stubborn old coot.

  7. I hate parting with my favorite running gear — even when I have a new favorite. This year I’ve been choosing a shirt with a (small) stain on it for so many runs because it is just *perfect* for the weather we’ve had — usually upper 30s for my long runs.

  8. I have such a hard time getting rid of running clothing BUT I have a rule of if I don’t wear something in the past 6 months or so it’s time to let it go. If it’s in really good condition and might fetch some decent money I try to Ebay it to put some extra cash in my race budget, otherwise I offer it to my sister or donate it.

      1. I’ll tell you what I didn’t have any trouble getting rid of: all of my scrubs after my last day of work! Luckily they had a good home in my sister 🙂

  9. I have a hard time getting rid of running clothes. I have a pile of stuff that I really haven’t used in a long time, but I keep thinking that I’ll need it. Fortunately, once Frank and I are ready to move, we’ll be packing everything we own (plus us and two cats) into a small kia soul. I’ll be forced to get rid of a few things, and I’ll donate most of it.

    Great week and pretty pictures! Although winter is tough, it is so so pretty!

    1. Our stuff would not be fitting in a car. Geez, not even when I had my first job! I packed my 2 cats & my stuff in my car — but there was still stuff that had to be moved by a company.

      Our last move we had an entire moving truck (but it included both our cars).

  10. Oh yeah! I have a really hard time letting go of old clothes too. It’s so hard! There have been times that I have gotten rid of stuff then later wished I had them….so I tend to just hang on to them. You just never know when they will come back in style 🙂

  11. I don’t hang on to clothes, but I certainly have favorites. I’ve talked about eventually turning my race shirts into a quilt, so that’ll clear some space from my dresser when I actually do it. I don’t normally have clothes to donate. I wear what I have, a lot, so it’s always they wear out first and then I have to throw them out.

    1. It’s rare for me to wear out clothes, although it has happened.

      I think part of why I have so many is that way I don’t have to do laundry so often . . . although I’m always doing laundry anyway.

  12. I hadn’t given it much thought, but the gray weather really can affect your mood. We haven’t had a ton of sun lately, but I will say that running outside does feel better than looking at the grayness from indoors!

    I honestly haven’t given away any of my running clothes, though my collection is getting to be a little bit over the top with all my T-shirts! I think I’d be sad to get rid of any of my race shirts.

  13. I’ve been worried about getting lost on group long runs if I know everyone else will be ahead. Looks like your group did a great job in keeping you all together with the markings! I’m trying to declutter – we had an “unfortunate blessing” in our basement that is allowing me to really reconsider all of the possessions we have down there and whether we really truly need them!

  14. I’m enjoying your snowy pictures since it’s the only way I’m going to see any. But, I’m over the grayness of winter. I can tell our tree pollen is already kicking up — it won’t be long until we get some springtime weather. I have a really hard time getting rid of old running shoes (they feel like memories) but I don’t get that way with clothes for whatever reason. I do need to go through my closet but simply can’t find the motivation! The Utah race sounds cool. Thanks for linking, Judy!

  15. I admit your title did worry me! Glad it was only your clothes you were saying good bye too. I have some race shirts that I don’t wear very often yet I have a hard time getting rid of them..lol

    That sun is annoying as it peaks out giving us hope that spring is on the way. Hopefully SOON!

  16. I have a few pairs of capris that do that! You would think these hips would hold them up fine but nope, Nothing I hate worse than constantly tugging on them to keep them up when I run.
    I have a hard time letting go of old clothes. Even if I haven’t wore them I still say in the back of my mind I’ll need this at some point, which I hardly ever do! My closets really need a good makeover!
