We are a quarter through the year already — seriously, how does that happen? Join me, Marcia @ Marcia’s Healthy Slice and other bloggers to see what we’re runfessing as we close the book on winter (sort of, there’s a little matter of some potential April Fool’s snow here on Friday/Saturday) and look forward to the longer spring days.
I runfess . . .
I get a little paranoid when it gets close to a race. Don’t even think about coming near me with your germs.
And even though I missed running with Darlene, I do runfess I was just a little bit glad that I didn’t have to be exposed to whatever virus she succumbed to. Although I did run with her shortly before I left for NOLA.
And the day Mr. Judy came home complaining of not feeling well and tried to hand me my mail? I didn’t even want to touch it!
I runfess . . .
I may or may not have held onto the hand rails a few times in some of the more challenging tempo runs I did on my treadmill.
The good news is I was also did a few tempos outside, where there are no handrails to lean on.
I runfess . . .
I have been almost completely living in athleisure this winter. I don’t have a whole lot of tights from Skirtsports, so while I may live in a lot of skirts in the summer, during the winter, it’s mostly been Athleta. I feel they have really upped their game this last couple of years.
I runfess . . .
That I felt really badly the day I did a 7 mile easy run at the park, on a beautiful day, and there were dogs everywhere. I did walk the dogs before I left, but it was a very brief walk.
I runfess . . .
I ate a picky bar for lunch, with buttered popcorn for dessert after my 12 mile long run a couple of weeks ago. And it was so cold that day I didn’t do any warm up at all.
But I did foam roll when I got home. A girl’s gotta have priorities!
I runfess . . .
That I totally broke the rule about not doing anything new on race day. I had meant to try eating some crystalized ginger on a long run before my race, but that plan only came to me before my last long run . . . and I totally forgot to bring any on that run.
I still ate some during my half. The theory is that it is supposed to revive your appetite. Mine tends to get suppressed when I run long — and if you read my NOLA & Food post here, you’ll know that that is the only time I don’t have the appetite of a 6 foot amazon (and I’m 5’1″). Well, obviously it didn’t hurt me. Did it help me? No idea. But I enjoyed it.
On top of that, I wore a new top! One that I had only worn on a 4 mile run. In fact, I wore it for the first time just days before my race. Yes, I did rinse it out. It was just so dang comfortable, and I liked the idea of not having to wear a bra (since it had a shelf bra). I’m sure it wouldn’t work well for you if you’re large chested, but I’m not, and it totally worked for me — and no chafing at all on a very hot and humid day!
Have you ever worn new clothes during a race? How’d it work for you?
Lastly, I runfess that I know this is more than five runfessions . . .
Wouldn’t you like to get some runfessions off your mind? Come join us
I am also linking up with the Friday Five 2.0 from Fairytales & Fitness and Rachel @ Running on Happy today.
Tell me more about this crystallized ginger. Is it a running thing?

No, it’s not really a running thing, but I was researching a post about ginger and came across the fact that it can help you regain your appetite.
When I run long distances (for me), I really struggle to eat towards the end, even though I know I need to do it.
I, of course, use dark chocolate covered crystalized ginger. You can get it at Trader Joes.

I thought you were going to say you had the ginger as a stomach settler. I had no idea it spiked the appetite. Interesting. I’ve worn plenty of new things on race day. One year I ran Boston in a new top, the next year I ran it in sleeves I bought at the expo. Thankfully it all worked out.

Of course you can use ginger that way, but thankfully, so far, knock on wood, I have a pretty strong stomach.
I really can’t believe you ran Boston in a new top! You are fearless.

I think I live in all of my workout clothes now too. Hey why not? They are so comfy and why not be comfy? I get a little paranoid around race day too comes with the territory I think. Have a great weekend!

The only problem with living in athleisure is that it IS so comfy . . . and stretchy . . . I sometimes need something to remind me I can’t eat like a 6′ tall woman. 😉

That’s an interesting fact about the ginger!
I would totally wear my workout clothes all the time if I could 🙂

The joys of being retired. 🙂

I have run with new clothes and even new shoes. I have an old Wonder girl pattern & I did buy the purple. I still wear a bra underneath all my tops even if they have a shelf bra (and not for support).

I don’t care about the headlights. I can get that even if I am wearing a bra! It was just so comfortable.
Of course, I don’t think you’ve ever chafed? I worried about that, because I do occasionally, but thankfully it didn’t happen.

I’m not comfortable without a bra. Plus race photos look better too if I wear one.

With you on the handrails. Once you’ve fallen off a couple of times you learn to grab when you’re wobblin!

Oh my gosh, I’m the same way before a race. I’ve been known to wear a mask around the house when people are sick before a race… Lol!
I’ve never considered racing in a shelf bra. I wonder if that would work for me. I’m not well endowed so I bet it would be mighty comfortable!

I’m willing to bet most runners are. Although I’ve never worn a mask . . . my sister & niece had the worst colds at Thanksgiving, a week before PCB . . .thankfully I didn’t succumb until after the race. And it wasn’t as bad as theirs.
The only reason I wore the top was because it was so comfortable on that 4 mile run. I was worried about chafing, but there wasn’t any.

great runfessions and way to justify them too! hey I don’t want people’s germs either! no risks!!
i am way too paranoid to wear anything new at a race. and I certainly won’t wear a finishers shirt at a race that I haven’t finished yet! however I will most like eat something I haven’t had before during a race if I need it.

I definitely don’t wear the race shirt. Bad ju ju! This is the first time I wore new clothes & I’m really glad I did! But at least I’d run in the top once. 🙂

Nope, I don’t do anything new on race day. Since I’ll be wearing Oiselle top for Boulder, and I haven’t worn it in a while, I’m going to get it out now that I’m in my longer distance building, so I can get used to it again.

Definitely a first for me wearing a new top. Thankfully it worked out great!

I have worn new tops, new bottoms, new socks, you name it! Live only once I say and we need to look good doing it! LOL!

I always worry about chafing with something untried. But it worked.

I could totally run bra less. I’m tiny… although I did have a girlfriend tell me once she thought I needed more support. ;). I’m super jealous of your latest race! The day of the dead medal is amazing! Don’t feel guilty about not taking your dogs out … you’re s grrst doggie momma and they love you! Plus! What theI don’t know won’t hurt then!

It’s an awesome medal. But not an easy race in the heat.

Oh yeah, shelf bra means no additional elastic around my torso! Always a plus! Yes, I’ve tried new things on race day…most of it worked out well. However, for whatever reason, once I got this lame brain idea the night before a half marathon to use an old “over the counter” pair of inserts in my running shoes….not the brightest idea. All was fine until the last 3 miles when I had bad calf cramps for the entire 3 miles. Won’t ever do that again 🙂

I had that happen in a half without inserts!

I’ve worn new socks before for a race and blistered so bad I’ll never do anything new on race day again. Of course, looking back, I don’t think it was the socks, but, you know, it’s a mental thing, lol.

I don’t think I do it again, either, if that happened to me.
