Taking the long way home: 6/2- 18 Weekly Wrap

With high winds battering Salt Lake City the day we were scheduled to depart, we didn’t make it home as scheduled. We missed our connection and with no later flights, and were stuck overnight in Chicago. So a little nod to Wendy @ Takingthelongwayhome in the subject (I could’ve gone with there’s no place like home).

Thankfully we were able to book a hotel near the airport, but I had to rely on my rapidly dwindling supply of protein bars for dinner. At about 9 pm.

We had smooth sailing the next day, but didn’t get home until almost dinner time. Apparently we lost power that night, for reasons unknown, yet I still managed to sleep through the very loud generator that’s right under our window. Yes, I was a little tired after all the hiking and a couple of frustrating days of travel. Normally there is no way I would be able to sleep through that kind of racket.

What with taper, all the hiking, and the race, I seem to have fallen out of the habit of doing anything else (like yoga, strength train, meditate). It’s time to get back to a more balanced way of life!

I’m joining up with the Weekly Wrap from Holly @ Hohoruns and Tricia @ Misssipppiddlin so we can all inspire each other to stay active.

Running updates

Don’t you love matching your shoes to the flowers?

Thursday

I absolutely knew I was recovered properly, what with about 4 days of almost complete rest. So why the heck did I feel totally like a sloth during my run — in the rain — on Thursday?

It was a somewhat warm day so the rain wasn’t really bad, and considering I just had perfect weather for my race, I really can’t complain. Still — could the rain just stay away for a while? Not if you look at next week’s forecast, apparently.

In the end my pace wasn’t bad, and I had negative splits — which just happened.
Saturday

The joke was on me, because Saturday was perfect positive splits! Hills, people, hills. But I got to run with someone for most of the run so it’s all good. Time to dial things back . . . just for a little bit!

I worked hard for my PR!

Favorites of the week
Home. I do love to travel, but I’m ready to just be at home for a while. Hopefully I can figure out a way to work some hiking into my weeks! Although running, dogwalking, swimming, hiking . . . even when you’re “retired” there’s still never enough hours in a day!

Other than our extended stay in Chicago, it’s been a quiet week and that’s nice for a change.

The s’mores french toast from Clean Sweets hit the spot after Saturday’s run

In case you missed it on Instagram (follow me here), I made S’mores French Toast yesterday. Easy peasy folks: make french toast. Crumble it up or cut it up. Top with chocolate chips, minim marshmallows, and some graham cracker bits. I’m pretty sure I’ll be making that again sometime!

There were more yummy desserts today, including a brownie sundae that literally fed the eight of us. Blogger fail, though, no photos at all.

And that’s a wrap

This week I am also linking up with the Sunday Fitness & Food Linkup brought to you by Ilka @ Ilka’s Blog and Angela @ Marathons & Motivation.

Let’s get the conversation started:

Do you make s’mores during the summer (we don’t, actually)?

Are you lucky enough to live near nice places to hike (most places are at least a half hour drive from us)?

How do you fit it all in?!

  1. You did a lot of traveling! I love coming home after traveling and sleeping in my own bed! There is nothing better! I love how your shoes match the flowers. They are beautiful! I do make s’mores in the summer! I love them! And, unfortunately there is no where near me to hike. I wish there was, I would do it all the time. Have a great week!

  2. For a minute there, I wondered where you were going with that title! You did take the long way home! I’m sorry I didn’t know you were here–I live pretty close to OHare and could have met you for dinner. Glad you finally made it home–it feels good to sleep in your own bed after a week away, doesn’t it?

    1. I’m guessing by 8 pm you’d already eaten — that’s about the time we checked into the hotel. And we didn’t have a car.

The next time I’m stuck near O’Hare I’ll be sure to let you know. 🙂

Thankfully it hasn’t happened to us too often, but we’ve spent nights by airports (not planned) a few times. Thankfully I’ve never actually had to sleep in an airport.

  3. We never make s’mores. I did think they were the bomb when I was young. We don’t live close to places we can hike. But that doesn’t stop us. We have gotten out to do some this summer with plans to do more. It gives my body a break from running but still gives a workout. How do I fit it in? I don’t. I just do the best I can. I get a run in 5 days a week. Anything more is simply a blessing. I love your running shoes! What kind are they?

    1. We don’t live super close to places you can hike, either. It’s a drive. So I’m investigating dog friendly hikes.

      5 x week is a lot of running! I typically run 4 x week.

      The shoes are Brooks Ghosts.

  4. Your Smores French toast looks so yummy! We do make Smores, but usually in the microwave. We don’t camp or do bonfires. I’m thankful I’ve never had a snafu in flights… yet. But at least you were able to make the best of it!

  5. Lots of hiking around here but you have to drive an hour which is worth it for a race or a good hike.

Come up to Bolton Landing or Chestertown!!

    1. Yeah, I know there is great hiking it’s just the driving part makes it difficult — suddenly it’s an all day thing & either it has to be the right weather to take the dogs with me or I have to pay to have someone watch them.

I am hunting down dog friendly hikes . . . I’m not sure Lola can do it during the summer, but I’m pretty sure Bandit could & I could always carry Lola for a while. Although even a 10 lb dog gets heavy pretty quickly!

      1. That’s always a possibility too. Although I’d actually like to get him out hiking too. But you’re usually boating!

Yeah, the dogs aren’t good for much more than 3 hours on their own. Bandit especially. Of course on a day like today they’ll hold it for hours rather than get wet.

      2. I’ve skipped boating for hiking and running and many times for friend meet ups. My hubby can go out on the boat without me. We’re both pretty independent.

      3. Well, I wouldn’t want to do it on a hot & humid day. Sats I can’t leave til after the long run.

Maybe we should try to organize a group hike someday.

Today was almost as ugly as they predicted. There were a few breaks though.

  6. My flight out of Utah was a good 2 hours late and I feel like one of the lucky ones who didn’t have to connect. I had a whole row to myself due to all the missed connections. Crazy.

    1. We got in about an hour after our flight took off. Luckily I always leave/pack enough food/supplements for the animals (and their 3 different pet sitters!) for just such a circumstance. Because it’s not the first time it’s happened. Luckily it very rarely happens. But unluckily it was weather, so the airline didn’t pay for our hotel.

  7. It’s not close, but I do like to hike a little bit when I go up to my parents’ house in the summer. Like this coming weekend. We usually hike in the mornings in the summer since summer afternoons get crazy with tourists.

  8. I do love hiking as well but unfortunately around here, there’s no place to go. Mississippi has no mountains. That’s one of the things i’m most looking forward to doing on our trip to Hawaii! I’ve been seeing beautiful pictures of places to hike there!

Glad you are home and rested. I think we all had sluggish legs on our first post half runs this past week. Legs just didn’t want to cooperate.

By the way, those s’mores look divine!

  9. Our flights were delayed too but nothing like you. We got home after midnight (after arriving at the airport before noon). I did nothing for a week. My body didn’t feel bad, but the travel and altitude took it’s toll. I overslept every morning. We loved hiking in Utah and wish we had those scenic trails around here!

    1. Well, getting home after midnight isn’t a #holotta fun (although we were supposed to get in around 11 pm or something originally).

I couldn’t oversleep — Gizmo won’t shut up if I’m not up at what he considers a decent hour.

I wish I had trails like UT’s here, too! We do have some lovely areas, but unfortunately they’re not close. I’m trying to hunt down some dog friendly ones . . . then I might be able to squeeze something in if I don’t have to worry about being gone too long.

  10. I’ve never been much of a s’mores fan…though I like all the individual ingredients on their own (weird, I know). We had a bon fire a week ago, and the hubby found an unopened package of graham crackers….I told him they were old because I could not remember buying them, but he insisted they would be fine because the wrappers was still sealed. Well, let’s just say, I was right and he was wrong….and the crackers turned the smoke into an interesting color of black as they burned….
