Do you think about food: Runfessions December 2017

brunfessdec17

. . . as much as I do?

All my runfessions seem to include at least one about food. Sometimes multiple runfessions about food. I admire you people who eat to live, I really do. I just enjoy my food far too much for that to be me — but I have gotten better at seeing food as fuel, and not reward.

I’m joining Marcia @ Marcia’s Healthy Slice to make sure I get those last runfessions off my chest before 2018 arrives.

I runfess . . .
I don’t turn into a pumpkin at Halloween, I do in the winter. It’s hard to drag myself out of the house when it’s gray, cold, super windy (or dark). It doesn’t matter how well I sleep, either, I’m just always tired. Probably lack of Vitamin D. Doesn’t really matter how much you get out there, you actually need some sun to make Vitamin D, and we don’t get much!

It’s one reason why I really loathe training through the winter. Good thing I’m not doing it this year, because winter seems to have started before winter actually arrived!

I runfess . . .
I am struggling with my word for 2018. Actually, by the time this posts I will have picked one and posted it (in fact, you can read it here). Normally, at some point, a word pops into my head. Usually I really do keep thinking about it as the year goes on, but Patience was my word for 2017 and I will freely admit that I totally forgot that it was.

All the reasons I picked Patience were totally true, but I’m afraid I just came up woefully short on patience far too often. Other times, though, yes, I’ve also been patient when it wasn’t easy to be.

But I’m writing this post mid-December and I’m still not sure what 2018’s word will be. Maybe because I’m not yet signed up for a major goal race? Which isn’t exactly true, I am signed up for a Fall Half, and it wasn’t quite what I envisioned but I’m betting it’ll be a lot of fun!

In the end, it did come to me, like it always does. And it came to me in the form of Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believing”.

This needed to go!

Part of why I offered to host a potluck after Albany Last Run (read about that here) was simply to get the Thanksgiving dessert leftovers out of my house!

If it had fit, I probably would have bought it!

I runfess . . .
I tried on this cute sweater at Target the other day. I really liked it, except for the fact that the S was huge. I checked the tag again, because I’d just looked at the size on the hanger, and sometimes people put stuff back on the wrong hanger.

It was a maternity sweater!

Was it wrong that I was still almost tempted to buy it?

I did buy the skirt, however.

I teased you with the one half I am signed up for in 2018. It’s a repeat state, no less. Running Buddy J and I signed up for the AMR Running Retreat on Cape Cod in October, which includes entry into the Cape Cod Half Marathon. There’s only a half and a full. So I’m going to repeat MA.

I also told non-Running Buddy D (as in hasn’t been running lately) about it, as we had talked about doing something like that, only it sold out in three days. They say there will be no wait list, either. Bummer.

The funny thing is, I always thought that when I did MA, I would run my half on Cape Cod. My inlaws retired there (and moved to the West Coast when we moved to the East Coast). We’ve spent a lot of time on Cape Cod, and Mr. Judy loves it (or thinks he does).

Funny how things work out. So now I am running a half marathon on Cape Cod, only Mr. Judy won’t be there (although most likely he’ll come out afterwards and we’ll have a little vacation there), and as of this writing it is the only half I am signed up for in 2018.

Do you struggle with short days and lack of sunshine?

  1. The other week before Christmas we were having a holiday party and I wanted to make Christmas cookies. I thought it’d be the perfect time to do so since we were having company over and wouldn’t feel tempted to eat all of them. Well we sure didn’t because half of them didn’t even turn out.

My friends and I are always exchanging clothes and I liked this one shirt and noticed that the tag said teeny weeny maternity in it after I have been wearing it. I thought wow, well it fits me good and no one will no. I asked my friend about it later and she said well no wonder it never fit me. Also, she was never pregnant..haha

  2. Those AMR retreats always look like such a blast and I hope to be able to do one of them maybe next year when I am an empty nester. I usually love getting out to run all winter long and find it invigorating but the unusually cold temps we are having are getting me worried about coming home tomorrow. Happy new year!

  3. Oh, wow, that AMR retreat will be fantastic! October is just too busy a time of year with work conferences and,oh yeah, my 30th anniversary this year. 😉 Don’t we all run so we can eat more pie? 😉 Happy New Year!

  4. I did really well with the sweets this year. My trick was to store everything in the garage. Out of sight, you know. I already have several races bought and paid for for 2018…I’m actually well ahead of the game on that this year.

  5. I listen to the AMR podcasts all the time so I was tempted to signup for the retreat until I saw the price. I am sure it will be fun. I was signed to run the ZOOMA Cape Cod until they cancelled it.

I am depressed about these COLD temps and it’s only just begun. But we are opposites here. I get more depressed staying in the house. Run in sub-zero temps. That will wake you up..just sayin.

I have my word for 2108 and it was easy this year.

I thought I read on FB that you signed up for that fast half in ID?

Too bad about NYD race although I doubt you would run in those temps (supposed to be the coldest day yet.) I am happy since we will be out partying the night before.

    Will I see you tomorrow?

    1. Tomorrow just depends on how I feel. Busy few days.

I would’ve done the NYD race — doesn’t start till noon so that makes a huge difference. But I understand their decision because of the half people & the volunteers. Let’s just hope there isn’t a blizzard in 2 weeks!

I’m not saying that being inside doesn’t get to me, but I also know what’s good for my well being. And right now that’s not running in a polar vortex!

      1. They made the right decision. Sunday night will be -9 and the high for Monday 9. So even at noon, it will around 0. I’ve been running in that. You won’t like it.

      2. I’ve been running in temps almost (but not quite) that cold. Did you see the NYE race still went on? Why weren’t you doing that one, LOL?

And no, I’m not running today; did my long run yesterday. And no, pretty sure I’m not running next sat (at least not outside), either!

      3. I would but I go out with the hubby every NYE.

Only rain and ice will keep from running. I just won’t run. Like this week. It’s ok. I don’t have a plan so I just what I can. No stress.

  6. I try to look at food as fuel too, but I still have a few weaknesses.
I am only signed up for one race too in 2018, I am just not that excited for next year.
I have been out in the sunshine a lot since the temperatures have been nice, but winter has arrived now and it will be more challenging. Today is real feel 19 and I am dragging my feet going out lol

  7. I’m on vitamin D per doctor’s orders, but I stick get tired very easily during the winter. I know it’s because it gets dark so early, so I start thinking I need to be in bed soon. And it’s only 8pm when that happens.

  8. I found the cutest sweater at Target a couple of years ago and then realized it was a maternity top. I didn’t purchase it, but with the loose fitting styles who would know and why should I have cared?

I haven’t signed up for any races for next year other than the New Year’s Day 5K I’m running. We’re thinking of going to Southern Utah in May or June so I may look for something out there or drive on up to Wyoming to run the Grand Tetons Half. Have you run a half in Wyoming yet?

    1. Well darn, I came really close to signing up for Grand Tetons in 2018 but decided to do a half in ID instead. Utah Valley is the beginning of June, of course!our New Years race was canceled due to the extreme cold. 😔

  9. I sure don’t “eat to live.” It’s a huge focus for me. I try to keep moderation in mind but it provides far too much pleasure for it to be just a tool for fuel.
Um, speaking of food, those desserts look amazing!
The sweater? Cut out the maternity tag and go for it. Who’ll know. 😉
Happy New Year. Wishing you the best for 2018. (I’m partial to even number. I think/hope it this will be a good year for all).

      1. Me too. 😦 I finally realized the reason I struggle more with my weight in winter is that I’m just naturally less active — can’t walk the dogs as much, and even though that doesn’t work up a sweat, it does get the steps in. So I do have to be mindful of what I eat during winter.

    1. The sweater was far too big; that was why I didn’t buy it. If it hadn’t been, I wouldn’t have known it was a maternity sweater until I got home, no doubt!

I can be somewhat superstitious, but not about odd/even years. The beginning of a year always makes me happy & hopeful, though!

  10. I had just recently come to the realization this week that I need to up my vitamin D too. Couldn’t figure out why I was so tired, then epiphany. Vitamin D. Time to go to Hawaii, 😂😂😂

  11. Do you struggle with short days and lack of sunshine? OMG I sure do. The colder it gets the harder it is!

Ever host a party just to get rid of sweets? No, but I bring all leftover cookies/cake to the office.

What do you have to runfess from December? I fell off the eat healthy wagon & the scale shows it too.

    1. I don’t work, but I do send in stuff with Mr, Judy (and I also don’t bake as much anymore). I really don’t know what I’ll do when he retires.

I think everyone falls off healthy eating in December! Maybe that’s why New Years was created. 🙂

  12. Short days, yes they get to me too. I take vitamin D and I have a sunlight lamp which I think help. Otherwise I spend 3 months in the year driving to and from work in the dark and not seeing daylight!
I don’t think about food enough, if I did I would eat better! Wishing you a healthy and happy 2018 Judy!

  13. Ooooh, I’m betting Cape Cod in October will be beautiful!! Don’t worry about that being the only race you’ve signed up for …there’s plenty of time to fill in those races! The only race I’m currently registered for is the full I’m doing in a few weeks. Guess I kind of want to see if I’m still able to walk before I sign up for a race!!! Lol

And no, I didn’t host a party but I did send all remaining sweets and treats home with family ….yes, it needed to go!!!

    Happy New Year Judy!

    1. My inlaws retired to the Cape (they are now on the West Coast, though). So we have been to the Cape many times. I am signed up for one other race. 🙂

I am willing to bet you’ll be walking after your full. You just might need to go backwards down those stairs . . .

      Happy New Year, Teresa!
