Another one bites the dust: 1/8- 14 Weekly Wrap

Race streak, that is. I’ve been doing the New Year’s Day “race” since 2011; I ran this race before I’d even run my first half! First it got pushed from New Years Day to today due to the extreme cold on New Years Day. Turned out to be just as cold today, and despite the ice/snow storm we had yesterday, it wasn’t canceled. But I chose to stay safe (and much warmer) on my treadmill. Of course Darlene @ Myfirst5kandmore ran it. I hate breaking the streak, but it was the right decision for me, especially since I feel as though I’m finally back to normal. I hope!

I’m joining up with the Weekly Wrap from Holly @ Hohoruns and Wendy @ Taking the Long Way Home — thanks, Wendy, for stepping into Tricia’s shoes (we miss your smiling face, Tricia!).

Running updates

Screw shoes got me through no problem

Tuesday

The first outside run of 2018! And it felt great . . . for about 2 miles. I went to the park, and while they clear the paths, and were actually clearing paths as I ran, the windrift means there are still stretches where I’m running on snow that isn’t packed down. It was like trail running!

By mile 3 the sun was disappearing and I was tired already. The good news is that I finished my run, never had any sliding at all due to my screw shoes, and while I definitely felt tired afterwards, finally a day where I felt my temp was normal.

A few people still do have decorations up

Thursday

Mid 40s so my second outside run this year! Nothing super spectacular about this one. On the slow side but someone checked his phone early in the morning, and while he got back to sleep, I didn’t. So yup, kind of tired. It just felt nice to be running without a gazillion layers on.

Friday

Did you catch it? My first 2 days of running in a row in quite some time. Unfortunately, due to the pouring rain and getting together with a friend in the afternoon, I was back on the treadmill. The good news is that it warmed up and all the snow (mostly) melted overnight. The bad news is more (and ice) is on its way and Sunday’s race, which was pushed back from NYD, is in jeopardy. Again.

Sunday

Yup, still on the treadmill. I watched the first two episodes of “13 Reasons Why” — can’t say as it grabbed me the way it seems to have a lot of people, but then again, it got me through 6 miles on the treadmill..

Boot cuff

Favorites of the week
There wasn’t a whole lot of anything going on this week. The bomb cyclone bombed (in that we only got 4 inches, thankfully, which isn’t much in these parts). Yes, it got really, really cold, but the good news is I was able to hunker down at home for most of it and we never lost power.

Not the greatest photo but you get the idea

Met up with a friend I hadn’t seen in a while for lunch on Friday and we went to a salad place I’d been wanting to try for a while. Win-win. It was pretty good, although somewhat pricey for a salad, but as you can see they were huge (we’d already been eating for a while by the time I remembered to take a photo).

Bandit willing something to drop

Yes, we decided to tackle some sushi again Saturday night. This time we decided to stick to cooked, although the raw fish we had the first time was from Whole Foods and was fine — it’s just expensive!

Notice Bandit looking on in anticipation. We made some edamame to go with our sushi both times. Bandit, our finicky dog, who often turns up his nose at breakfast, loves edamame (turns out Lola will eat it, too). I mean seriously loves it. Like he’ll train for it. He’ll stay for it. Who knew? Weird dog! I also let him lick just a tiny bit of Sriracha off my finger and he seemed to enjoy that, too.

These are my rolls. Mr. Judy makes much better looking rolls (they all taste just fine!)

I made a cucumber avocado roll and a “crab” roll. I bought imitation crab that is specifically for sushi. I really don’t like the ingredients — no actual crab, but some wheat and sugar, but Mr. Judy wanted it. We were discussing how we could get in some more variety when I had  a lightbulb moment: I could make the avocado peanut rolls I love so much! Next time.

I’m wrapping it up with a few favorite blogs from this week:

This week I am also linking up with the Sunday Fitness & Food Linkup brought to you by Ilka @ Ilka’s Blog and Angela @ Marathons & Motivation.

Let’s get the conversation started:

What’s the weirdest thing your furkid eats?

What is your favorite type of food to go out for?

Are you into fiber arts?

  1. We have two neighbors who are right next door to each other that still have their Christmas lights up (and on). My husband says they’re competing to see who can leave them up the longest. 😃

Sorry you missed your race, but I think you did the right thing. Thanks for sharing my post!

    1. That’s so funny about your neighbors. I’m so rarely out at night, I’ve no idea if anyone’s lights are actually still on — most of the decorations have been taken down, though.

Missing the race was the right decision for me. Darlene said it was clear, but we don’t always agree on things. Still, like I said, it was the right thing for me — we’re all different.

  2. It was absolutely clear since it’s on the State Office campus roads not UAlbany path. Besides, racing is my thing and I really enjoyed it (despite the sub-zero temps.) As you said..we’re all different. Luckily there were quite a lot of crazy runners like me there.

I can eat sushi but don’t enjoy it enough to order it or make it. I like to go out for steak.

Fiber arts? Trying to figure out what you mean. If it’s knitting, crocheting, crewel, rug weaving then yes to all. Right now I am knitting socks.

    1. I actually suggested to Mr. Judy that we ought to grill a steak Friday (but we didn’t).

Yes, fiber arts means anything to do with yarn, basically. Or needle & thread, too. Right now I’m doing a cat blanket to donate. I’ll probably do a few before I actually donate them.

    1. The good thing is that this is not really a race — it’s a series of free supported runs put on by a local running club. I kind of hated to break the streak, but then again, since it wasn’t on NYD anyway I guess it was already broken.

I watched another episode of 13 reasons today while on the treadmill. I might actually get through it this winter, but maybe not. Still hasn’t really grabbed me.

Then again, we just watched Dunkirk, which everyone seems to rave about — we both thought it was weird.

    1. Well, the good news is that I hope to do all my runs outside this week, but then again, we might get more snow so we’ll see.

Yoga Booty Ballet is a somewhat old Beach Body Program. It’s not tough, but it is fun!

  3. We’ve had quite a bit of ice here this week as well. Thankfully the rainstorm on Friday melted a lot of the leftover snow and ice.

I do eat sushi but I only eat cucumber roll, sweet potato roll and shrimp roll. I’m not very adventurous lol. I recently took a sushi making class and it was a lot of fun!

    1. All our snow melted on Friday, too. Then the ice storm came on Saturday . . . life in the NE!

I actually really prefer raw sushi, but it’s hard to find a safe source that’s really good for at home. The stuff I bought for New Years was from Whole Foods, but it cost the same as going out, basically!

Still, I agree, it’s fun. As long as you’re not a perfectionist. 🙂

  4. Sorry your race got cancelled. We got an ice storm here too on Saturday morning. Why couldn’t it have been Friday morning instead so work would have been delayed…haha. It was 65 degrees on Friday, so I’ll take it!

I don’t feed Baylee people food ( except for animal crackers and sometimes cheese it’s but shhhh!), but my father in law’s dog will eat baby carrots all day long!

I like to sew and I’ve made a few of those fleece tie blankets. I’d like to be able to knit or crochet but I’ve tried before and immediately forget how to do it the next time I pick up the needles!

    1. The race wasn’t cancelled — the second time, anyway — I just chose not to go.

Chester would, and did, eat everything. He loved baby carrots, too. Lola likes them, but you have to bite off pieces for her because it was tough for her to chew even before she had her canine removed.

Those fleece tie blankets are awesome! Alas, I don’t sew. It had been a really long time since I’d crocheted anything, but crocheting is pretty easy and the google (and youtube) are your friends.

    1. Well, they do put soy in a lot of dogfoods, but it’s not in what I feed them.

Seriously, Bandit is so damn finicky that it was just shocking how much he loves it. I don’t give him much (but I’ll ask the vet what she thinks about it today, since I happen to be taking Lola).

The screw shoes are a major game changer. I would never have been able to do that particular run without them!

    1. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with any of that. Dogs are omnivores, after all, not carnivores like cats.

      Chester would eat anything. Literally.

Bandit only got the edamame because he seemed so interested. I don’t give him much; he has such an iffy digestive system. But it is just truly amazing how much he loves it.

I snack on edamame fairly frequently, so now I’m in trouble . . .

  5. That’s so funny that your pup likes edamame! Our fur kids would seriously eat anything that gets dropped but we try to limit them to safe fruits/veggies/and sometimes chicken. Great job getting back in to things after being sick! Sounds like it was the right idea to take to the treadmill instead of the race. Thanks for the post share! That is really sweet. I’ve been thinking about doing that on my facebook page and I think this confirms it’s a good idea!

    1. Chester was a walking doggie garbage (been gone a couple of years now). Lola will eat most things, but some things are just hard for her to eat.

I plan to just be linking to blogs that catch my eye each week now.

  6. Screw shoes for the win! (And something I’ll probably never need.) Bandit likes edamame? That seems so weird. Our neighborhood leaves the lights on our entrance trees until President’s Day. I love seeing those lights on a dark morning run! Thanks for linking!

    1. Most people have taken their lights down, but there are still a few houses with them. Hey, if you want to foot the bill, looks pretty to me!

Considering how very picky Bandit is, edamame was a shocker. I’ll have to take some video of him training for it next time.

  7. Edamame is strange LoL but hey, I guess it is healthy 🙂 Your sushi skills are improving that looks like a pro made it.
The way things are going I will need to learn to love the treadmill too….safer for sure.
I am sorry you did not get to do your race! Sometimes its just better to skip it

    1. Thanks karen, but definitely doesn’t look like the pros! Mr. Judy is much better at it.

I don’t love my treadmill, but I love that I have it and embrace when need be.

Darlene & I ran around some of where the race was — it wasn’t bad. I still don’t regret it. Sunday was a busy day without the race!

  8. What a bummer that you had to mess up your race streak, but it sounds like you did what was best for you. I’m hoping to meet my friends tomorrow morning before our next snow hits sometime in the morning. We’re only supposed to get 1-3 inches over 24 hours, but DC goes nuts whenever it snows…

    1. Many years ago I lived in Laurel, MD. So I know how it gets.

We’re getting more snow too. The biggest question for me right now is do I want to run tomorrow in the snow, knowing that there can be icy patches underneath. Darn winter!

      Liked by 1 person

    1. Oh, cabin fever is definitely a thing. Part of why I was hibernating was just that I wasn’t 100% and didn’t want to get all sweaty & then so chilled. Thankfully, I think *maybe* I’m finally back to normal. I was even considering a run today (although it would probably have been inside due to the snow now covering those icy patches).

But that would be 3 days in a row and with a dentist appointment I decided better to make it an easy day. Just the fact that I was considering running 3 days in a row is a good sign though!

  9. Carlo, in his old age, is now grain free, but he’d eat anything if I let him. Ozzy on the other hand is pretty finicky with food and treats, which is fine by me. I probably wouldn’t have run that race either. I just don’t find super cold races enjoyable, especially if the pavement isn’t completely clear.

    1. Well, I did meet up with Darlene and we ran in some of the same areas of the race. It would have been fine, like she said, and while I’m sad that race streak was broken, I don’t really feel bad that I didn’t do it (and I wasn’t registered, either, although it’s free anyway).

Maybe my lack of regret was due to the fact it wasn’t NYD. Right now I’m on the hunt for a spring 5k. I don’t usually run a lot of 5ks, and have never really trained for one, but I would also like to PR one, so I need to pick one and actually train for it for a change!

  10. Our dog will eat pretty much anything, but she absolutely loves the pickled ginger that comes with sushi. The cats are much pickier, but one them likes to lick the topping off cinnamon graham crackers.

    1. They all have their quirks, don’t they? I had a cat that loved red bell peppers; not green, had to be red (I agree with him, btw).

I would never have given him any, only he literally demanded it. I only gave him a little, because I know nightshades aren’t great for animals. His brother, Gizmo whom is still here, btw, had zero interest in veggies.
