Throwing out the Android: 1/15- 21 Weekly Wrap

Nothing super eventful about this week. Three of my four runs were actually outside — despite getting dumped on with snow earlier in the week. I ran once with Darlene, who had MLK Day off, which hasn’t happened in a while. And met up with the remnants of the Wineglass girls for a group run for the first time this year. Feeling better so life is good.

I’m joining up with the Weekly Wrap from Holly @ Hohoruns and Wendy @ Taking the Long Way Home to share my activity this week.

Workouts update

  • Monday: 4 miles easy with Darlene (actually almost my easy pace for a change)
  • Tuesday: Ballet Beautiful
  • Wednesday: 3 treadmill miles (cause MN decided to dump 6+ inches of snow on us, not the forecast 1-4 — then some shoveling of said snow).
  • Thursday:  Still trying to get ice off the driveway, otherwise nothing . . . no reason other than a busy day
  • Friday:  JY 5 Minute Reset Hamstrings, calves & feet, 3 miles easy, Ballet Beautiful
  • Saturday: 6 mile LSD
  • Sunday: Dogwalk. First one in a week! Thank you January thaw.

Mileage: 16 (+2)

Running updates

Our driveway Monday — the ice has mostly melted now, thank goodness!

Monday

It’s been a long time since I ran with Darlene @ Myfirst5k, but since others were running in the morning and I couldn’t and she wanted to sleep in, we met up for an “easy” run for me, a recovery run for her in the afternoon. Although still not warm, there was bright sunshine and little wind so it felt fine. And I recovered with some hot chocolate, one of my favorite ways to recover.

Wednesday

I thought I would have some major DOMs from the Ballet Beautiful DVD yesterday. Maybe it’s waiting for me. Maybe the 100 fire hydrants from the Feel Great in 8 challenge will knock them out. Anyway, I knocked out 3 easy miles on the treadmill while the outside was being turned into a Norman Rockwell photo.

Friday

The temps are slowly rising (although there is still ice on the driveway despite hacking at it almost daily — should be gone soon with forecast highs in the 40s this weekend). It wasn’t in the 40s when I ran this morning, although it was in the 20s so not too bad. I wore my trail shoes just in case of icy patches, but everything seemed fine (or the trail shoes did their job). And apparently totally forgot to take a photo.

Looks lovely, right?

Saturday

Met up with the (smaller) group, and started early as I was the only slower run/walker there. Did one loop one way, the other loop the other way — I find that makes it much easier mentally. Which is not to say it makes it easy.

Except this is what it looks like 90% of the run

The last couple of runs have been n the speedier side for me — probably because it’s warmer, and I’m not bundled up like the kid from “A Christmas Story, not to mention that I do seem to be feeling normal again, too.

Furry side

Favorites of the week
Gotta give a shout out to the Skirtsports Double Take Reversible jacket — I snagged it on sale, and sadly it is no longer on sale, but if it goes on sale again, get it! I still haven’t tried it much below high 20s – mid 30sF, but so far I’ve been perfectly comfortable in it. There are two hand pockets and a large back pocket (all zippered), when you’re wearing it on the gray side, with the furry side in.

Pocket side with the furry side inside

Yesterday I wore it to run in, then after we had our post race snack, I just turned it inside out so the sweaty/furry side was facing out — which kept me a little warmer than just having it against me. The pockets are only on the gray side, by the way.

New refurbished iphone

For many years I have used an Android and carried an Ipod Touch, which I would kid was my external hard drive. We don’t get unlimited anything and we don’t usually get expensive phones.

It was time for a new Ipod — I’d had this one for 5+ years, I think. They don’t last forever. When I told Mr. Judy I was thinking of getting a new one (refurbished), he asked how much it cost. Turns out it was roughly $100 less than getting an older iphone, and our Tracfone service now allows you to use an iphone with the service. And yes, it was a pain carrying two devices for years — mostly because the Ipod took much better photos.

So as an early birthday present, I got an iphone 6. Surprisingly the whole porting stuff over and getting activated went totally smoothly. What does’t seem to be going so smoothly? The whole battery life thing. My Android had much better battery life, but in fairness to it, I had far fewer apps on it (because you couldn’t really fit many on it, hence the Ipod).

So any battery conserving tricks and tips would be highly appreciated. Plus any case suggestions. I ordered a screen protector and slapped that baby on right away (remember my cracked screen before a trip last year, so not fun). But I wanted to be a bit choosier about the case, although I don’t want to wait too long and let it get too scratched up.

I’m wrapping it up with a few favorite blogs from this week:

This week I am also linking up with the Sunday Fitness & Food Linkup brought to you by Ilka @ Ilka’s Blog and Angela @ Marathons & Motivation.

Let’s get the conversation started:

Are things thawing (even if only temporarily) in your neck of the woods?

What’s your best Apple battery conserving trick?

Android or Apple and are you happy with it?

  1. I still use my iPod and I will literally cry when it finally bites the dust. Although I always noticed a folder labeled “photos” on my iPod, I never knew you could actually take pictures on any of the iPods. How does that even work? Please let me know how you like the iPhone. I had a hard time getting use to mine and eventually just went back to my old phone. I personally find the android phones easier to manage but someday may have to go back to iPhone. -M

    1. Is yours an Ipod touch? If it is, there should be a Camera icon. Just click on that, and then click the round button (the one in the app, NOT your home button!).

I don’t find the iphone hard at all, because an ipod is essentially an inphone without the phone part. I didn’t find my Android hard, either, but it didn’t take great photos and I was constantly running out of space and having to delete apps — and I didn’t have a lot of apps in the first place!

    1. I did learn about sliding off the apps yesterday. I guess the truth is I used my ipod a lot, so most of the time my android was pretty good about battery life.

OTOH, I drove from my house to a store yesterday, all of 15 minutes, and the battery went down 10%! So now it’s spending most of its life in low power mode, and I’m beginning to wonder if I still need to use my ipod while at home (same apps).

      You’re welcome, Wendy.

  2. The battery on the 6 is pretty bad and it shuts off in cold weather.

I can’t compare to android since I’ve always had an iPhone.

    But here’s what I do:

    Lower the screen brightness.
    Use on low power mode.
Download music and podcasts and use on airplane mode.
    Always carry a portable battery.

      1. I don’t have auto-brightness. Ii just turn it way down. Still the battery doesn’t last all day or sometimes the whole run (if it’s cold.)

      2. That’s the annoying thing, both OSs have their issues. Space was a big one on my Android (and the camera), but I could almost always get by all day without charging the battery.

Although in fairness, I also used my ipod a lot. But I turned my phone off last night with a 96% charge and when I turned it back on this morning there was only a 87% charge. And yes, I turned it off, not put it to sleep.

  3. Android all the way, although I do have an iPod still. James has an iPhone but he’s about to make the switch to Android. Apple seems to be extremely limited in space and storage. Glad you’re feeling better, ☺

    1. That’s really funny — my android was extremely limited in space — yes, we had an SD card in there, but it was almost useless because most apps couldn’t be put on it. It would be fine at first, but then due to updates for all the apps you don’t use & can’t get rid of, I’d have to start deleting stuff and could never get all my apps on there in the first place.

I know that Apple has a similar problem as far as OS, and I told Mr. Judy, having never had an iphone before, I’d no idea how long I could nurse it along.

Oddly enough, when I worked as a graphic designer, I preferred a PC. Eventually I had to add a Mac because of some customers, and everyone said oh, you’ll love it. I never did.

  4. I still have an iPhone 6s and it has a ton of storage. I never have to delete any photos, videos or apps. If you have any notifications turned on, turn them off. You can always open your apps and look at your notifications when you want to. The battery will die in cold weather. If I put it in my Roo pocket inside my waistband, it does OK. I’m glad you are feeling better and were able to get outside for some runs this week. Thanks for linking!

  5. I think everyone mentioned all the battery savings tips I use. The main thing is I turn it on airplane mode if I’m going for a long run and make sure all the apps are completely turned off so they’re not using battery in the background. As for as cases, I like Otterbox because they protect the phone really well. I got a mophie recently so I didn’t have to worry about running out of battery during marathon training long runs. It’s great and charges the phone really quickly. I don’t use it all the time though because it’s bulkier and heavier than a normal case.

  6. Wow! You went from Android to Apple?! I know some people that do but …. I don’t think I ever could. That said, both my girls have iPhones and they love them to pieces. In fact, my youngest was loved to literal pieces and she’s using my old Samsung Galaxy S6 right now until she can afford the insurance. LOL Talk about battery issues! And a completely different operating system. I guess it makes sense since you were also carrying around the iPod but still ….. Are their any apps you can download that help conserve battery power? One thing I always do is limit the time it stays open without activity and to decrease the screen brightness. Apparently that takes a lot of power right there.

    1. I’m not quite sure why that’s so shocking (going from Android to Apple). I’m pretty good with that sort of stuff in general, and an ipod is basically an iphone without the phone. In fact, it ported over all my apps with one click, which was very cool.

Apparently there is some program that is supposed to help with battery power, but not sure I want to go there. I might still be carrying around that ipod (but hopefully not when I’m running!).

      1. That is cool that your apps ported right over! I really only use my iPod for workout music in my garage or desperation music when I’m running on the treadmill so I’d be a hot mess if I had to suddenly switch phone systems. I was just surprised that you made the switch happily! Most of my friends are either Apple or Android – there is no common ground or switching. lol I’d probably be lost if I tried to switch. haha!

      2. I’ve always been somewhat ambidextrous when it comes to OS, I guess. But I’ve had an ipod about 8 years or so. I got it because I didn’t have a smart phone at the time. I’ve only had a smart phone for a few years, actually, but I’ve been using the ipod a really long time.

    1. I don’t know about replacements. The latest thing I’d heard was that Apple was intentionally slowing down older models to conserve battery, but I don’t really have a comparison and so far no issues with that — in fact, some of the apps are definitely working better than on my ipod, but then again, it’s a new OS.

  7. I got my first iPhone to combine my music with my phone. It was hard to carry two devices, but I always want my phone with me when I’m out running. The iPhone made things a lot easier.

    1. I agree on always having a phone. It’s very very rare that I forget mine. And yes, carrying two devices was a pain, and I’m sure I’ll figure out how to work with the battery but it’s kind of a pain too! They all have their issues.

  8. Great week of workouts! As you thawed out, we got a serious go at winter. On friday, I was wearing shorts and a t-shirt and then Saturday we got a pretty wild storm. Now its all white and cold. Honestly… I cant wait until summer.

  9. I never cease to be impressed with you guys running in that stuff.

I’m an Android user and always will be. My boys are all iPhone fanatics but it’s just not for me. Love my Android Samsung Galaxy. But I do have an iPod shuffle and will never part with it. It’s perfect for running!!

    1. Well, I don’t enjoy running in heat & humidity — would rather run in cold (although would of course prefer not to have to, too).

In fairness to Android, our Android phones were inexpensive. Much prefer the iphone, for sure, but the whole battery thing is very annoying, gotta admit.
