Be careful what you wish for: 1/29- 2/4 Weekly Wrap

I started the week fairly determined to run outside every day. And my wish was granted. Be careful what you wish for eh? On Friday I started to feel tired in the afternoon, but I did a lot around the house. Saturday I woke up with a sore threat and mildly elevated resting heart rate. Today there’s no sore throat, but it’s clear to me I need some extra rest. Just when it seemed things were back to normal!

Well, if you’re going to feel unwell, it was a good weekend for it — super cold, super windy today, and there’s really no reason not to rest it out. It’s not too bad — I’m still eating. I lose my appetite if I’m really sick.

I’m joining up with the Weekly Wrap from Holly @ Hohoruns and Wendy @ Taking the Long Way Home to share my activity this week.

Running updates

The view from Chester’s Rock (as I think of it)

Monday

Seriously one of the nicest runs I’ve done in a long while: the sunshine! the ice-free paths! Yeah, it was still in the 30s, but it felt pretty damn good. I took it nice and easy; between the visit with my parents and Bandit needing to go out a couple of times during the night, I was tired — up for a run, but nothing besides an easy run.

I was working on negative splits (without trying; I don’t watch my pace on easy runs) until the big slowdown the last mile. Oh well.

Yes, it was flurrying the entire run

Tuesday

It was cold, there were snow showers and drumroll . . . I ran outside! Yes, I did! Thank you Mr. Judy for the screw shoes; they’re getting a workout. Wouldn’t you know I start my run and there are some younguns from some track team running around my neighborhood? They were doing strides or hill repeats on my road. Uphill. Where I do them downhill, LOL!

The plow just drives around our dead end circle instead of clearing the whole thing; this is what’s left

Thursday

Despite Mr. Judy arriving home early because he was coughing up a lung (again!), I eventually made my way outside for an uneventful, gray, rather dreary run. Nothing memorable.

A long massage seat session while crocheting

Favorites of the week
I went to a knitting/crochet group at the library. I was looking around for a group, specifically one I’d heard was good, but I couldn’t find their meeting times. Then I saw my local library was starting up a group; they had one in the afternoon and one in the evening.

And speaking of crocheting, my original plan for Saturday was to run later in the day, when it was only cold, not brutally cold. So I got out my massage seat and had it going while I crocheted  . . . heaven. But then my throat was scratchy and I was tired so I stayed in my jammies most of the day anyway.

A big shout out to running buddy J who conquered a hot half in FL today!

Sunday I had a little spa day — I repeated the massage seat/crochet session, and I had a lovely epsom soak after my shower.

Sleep. Seriously. Bandit kept us up so much of last week . . . getting back to some normal sleep felt wonderful. Although maybe that’s why I’m not feeling good now? All that standing outside cold doors at 2 am?

A few sketches from the week

While decluttering, I came across some of my old illustrated journals. And then I had the bright idea to use my planner the same way. I had some fun this weekend doing a little sketching. Since I have the photos from the week, it’s easy to go back and add some drawings to January, too (I started on that one of my Dad with the dogs from last weekend). The tea cup I just drew from my tea cup — maybe I should use that for my next ultimate coffee/tea meetup (February’s is here, if you missed it).

Had to share the food porn

I made these chocolate chocolate chip pancakes from a recipe in a cookbook. I tweaked it a bit but they were tasty and really filling (coconut flour based). They need some more tweaking, though, so it’s just a tease.

I’m wrapping it up with a few favorite blogs from this week:

This week I am also linking up with the Sunday Fitness & Food Linkup brought to you by Ilka @ Ilka’s Blog and Angela @ Marathons & Motivation.

Let’s get the conversation started:

Do you do “spa” days at home?

Watching the big game tonight?

Do you keep a written journal/diary/planner?

  1. Congrats on getting outside for all of your runs this week. Hopefully, you are just fighting something off and will feel better shortly. I like the idea of sketching in your planner! Sadly, mine would be more like doodling. A home spa day for me would consist of soaking in the tub (since I always shower), maybe a pedicure and sometimes coloring my hair. Thanks for linking!

    1. Nothing wrong with doodling.

I wouldn’t have thought to call it a spa day, but Mr. Judy called it that (it wasn’t really) & I ‘ran” with it — since it’s the only running I’m doing at the moment.

    1. Doodling is absolutely calming. Why do you think there are adult coloring books? 🙂

Growing up I was *always* drawing. I was pretty good, but not good “enough”, and I’ve gone back & forth through periods of drawing again over the last few years.

I think it’s going to be really fun to do this in my planner! Except then I’ll have to keep the darn thing.

  2. Nice work getting outside this week! The weather has been just so up and down that I’m thankful anytime I can get outside. Hopefully, you just need a little rest and you’ll be well soon. 🙂

I definitely keep a written planner and there’s no drawing. Unless you want to see stick figures, boxes, or bubble letters. lol. Nope, I don’t want to see it either.

Hope Mr. Judy didn’t cough up both his lungs.

    1. Hey, if stick figures & bubble letters make you happy . . .

Actually, Mr. Judy wasn’t quite as sick as he was last month, I’m a little worse than I was last month. But not terrible. I hate having to miss my workouts! It just bothers me. I can live with a dirty house (seriously), but don’t get between me & my workouts!

The good news is if I’m gonna be sick, now is a good time (not that there’s ever a good time).

    1. I wish the sickness was cured by extra sleep. But extra sleep is ALWAYS a good thing! Again, it’s not that terrible, and before I know it I’ll be back to healthy & hopefully stay that way this time.

    1. It was a great week — I really felt like I was getting back to normal — right up until Friday! Oh well.

I just started doing epsom soaks last year myself. I don’t take baths, so it’s just my feet (I’d have to actually clean the bathtub to take a bath & it’s not deep anyway).

  3. You are quite the artist! I draw in my planner for work cus I need to add some color to those lesson plans…haha

Your run on Monday sounds lovely. I hope you and Mr.Judy are healthy this week. My husband was home all week with pneumonia. It’s been a bad year for illnesses already.

    1. Oh no! Definitely not pneumonia here. I hope he’s getting better.

I missed the first round of sickness, for the most part — I wasn’t 100% but I could still get most of my workouts in. I succumbed this time, but it’s still not that bad.

  4. There’s a lot going around. Everyone seems to be sick. Fingers crossed that I stay healthy. Got no time for that.

Rarely have time for a spa day but it would be a long bubble bath and a pedicure.

Looking forward to the half time show. That’s about it.

    1. No one’s got time to be sick but it is what it is.

It wasn’t really a spa day but the epsom soak (my foot spa is heated) was really relaxing & so is that massage chair.

I don’t watch any of the game. Too late for me. I usually see snippets the next day & that’s enough for me.

      1. Believe it or not, I got sucked into the game. It was exciting. Also got a lot of knitting done. Sitting by the fire is how I relax (I had a massage chair but gave it away since I never used it.)

At least your sicknesses have come in the off season. I bet you’re glad you didn’t sign up for a winter half marathon.

      2. Don’t have a fireplace. Never have. Would love one, but it would have to be gas because if I had to do more than push a button it would never get used. Unfortunately we have nowhere to put one in this house.

Yes, I’m happy I didn’t sign up for a winter OR a spring half. But then I rarely do. Just cause I truly hate training in the winter. But sometimes it’s unavoidable.

      3. No place for a fireplace, not without major rennovation and/or moving around stuff.

Oddly enough, Mr. Judy was making noises about new living room furniture just yesterday. But they’re only 11 years old, and even though we bought them for our other house & they don’t really quite fit in this house, I still really like my couches.

  5. Do you do “spa” days at home? No. I hope you will elaborate on the salt soaks you post about.

Watching the big game tonight? It is on but I am on my I-Pad while hubby watches.

Do you keep a written journal/diary/planner? I have a planner that I make a few notes in.

    1. It’s just soaking with epsom salts. I have a foot spa I bought last year — it’s heated and has bubbles so I put some epsom salts in that when I soak my feet. You can do a bath with them, too, only I don’t do baths!

  6. Nice sketches. Nice crocheting too. I ran outside twice this week. We’ve had no snow needing plowing but they’ve dumped a lot of salt on our roads for the piddly amounts we’ve gotten.

    1. Actually feeling a bit worse today, but still not horrible and I’m grateful for that. At least I don’t have to drag myself to the dr cause it’s super cold & windy out there! The dogs are missing their walks, though. 😦

  7. Yay! for getting outside. 30’s isn’t really bad, it is that bitter stuff like 15…and wind that is tough.
Your journal is cute! I keep notes in my Garmin Connect but I don’t journal regularly.
What is a plow?! LOL for real, VA in my area only plows major roads. I hope we don’t get more snow, it has been so cold it just hangs around forever!

  8. Nice week! I hate that feeling when you think you might be getting sick but you’re not sure. I was there a few weeks back. I’m glad yours didn’t amount to a cold or anything. I keep a journal of how I feel and what workouts I do, but it’s pretty minimal. I use it mostly to make sure that I’m not getting injured. I can look at it and track how I’m feeling long term.

    1. Unfortunately I’m sure now. It got worse today, but it’s still not that bad.

Looking back at my journal from the previous week, I wrote a lot about how I was exhausted — and I was! Too much sleep deprivation but there was nothing I could do about it.

Luckily I get to stay home & rest. It’s even too cold to walk the dogs (I just have to let them out a bazillion times, although actually it’s so cold half the time I have to force them out!

  9. Hope you feel more yourself soon- I think our bodies crave the rest that you are giving it! I love the cup sketch- you should def. make that an image for your blog- very neat idea, that journal!

  10. I always need extra rest when I start to feel like I’m coming down with something…trying to push through pretty much guarantees it will get worse. I keep a planner, but no sketching. Just all the to-do lists.

  11. Well, I am glad that you had that nice, pretty run earlier in the week …I’m sure those runs help to make the dreary ones a little more bearable?

Love the journal sketches, you are quite the artist! Hope you are feeling better this week Judy. Drown it out with your favorite tea! xoxo

  12. I love that you joined a knitting group! I’m so not great with things like that.

I did watch some of the game, but I wasn’t really into it. Kept me up way later than I needed to be though LOL!

I don’t do spa days at home. I barely do them out, either! It’s just not something I truly enjoy, although when I got a massage a few months ago, it was really a good thing and I should do it more often.
