Currier & Ives: 2/26- 3/4 Weekly Wrap

On Friday our world was turned into a picture perfect Christmas card. It snowed for well over 12 hours (we were initially told to expect rain and maybe 3 inches of snow).

I’m joining up with the Weekly Wrap from Holly @ Hohoruns and Wendy @ Taking the Long Way Home to actually share a few more miles this week.

Running Updates

The day before the storm

Thursday
I had thought I’d be getting three runs in this week, but it wasn’t meant to be. I was not happy to miss the warmer/nicer weather earlier in the week. On the other hand, I am so glad I got out before we were pummeled with ice/snow (mostly snow. Lots and lots of snow).

I was a bit angry at something and this was a surprisingly speedy run. I joked with Coach Rachel @ Runningonhappy that I somehow need to get angry before races!

I also saw the first leaves budding out on the trees. Poor things; I’m sure they didn’t know what hit them the next day.

A gray day but the run felt good

Sunday
Things weren’t as bad as they would probably have been earlier in the winter with that much snow — because of our warm weather in the weeks preceding this storm, streets got cleared quickly and remained fairly dry; which is good — very little black ice.

This run felt pretty good. I threw in some strides each mile and which helped me keep up a decent pace.

Favorites of the week
The snow was definitely not a favorite, but the streets were blessedly clean and dry the very next day. Which means the dogs don’t have to get cabin fever. It’s going to be quite the mess as that much snow slowly melts, and there are some more snow or wintry mix chances coming our way.

For now I’ll just share some of the storm photos. Remember this snow was from one storm! And the day before there was no snow on the ground and I ran in capris. It also doesn’t look like quite as much as it actually was, since it’s still “warm” and started melting right away, plus there was also some icing during the storm so it compacted down pretty quickly.

I’m wrapping it up with a few favorite blogs from this week:

This week I am also linking up with the Sunday Fitness & Food Linkup brought to you by Ilka @ Ilka’s Blog and Angela @ Marathons & Motivation.

Let’s get the conversation started:

Wouldn’t you like to come shovel for us?

Ever made a snowman?

Enjoyed anything new lately (and I do mean anything — food, book, movie, clothes, etc.)?

  1. Wow that is a lot of snow! Glad it wasn’t terrible, but sorry to say that I would not want to come shovel for you 😉 I find that anger makes the best runs, but like you I can never get angry before a race!

    1. Yeah, I’m usually very excited before a race. Not so much nervous, not usually (except when there’s tricky logistics getting to the starting line).

It was a lot of snow. But not our biggest storm ever. My husband does most of it with the snow blower (and luckily is able to work from home) but some of it needs to be shoveled by hand, too, and that’s where I come in.

I am definitely jealous of all those IG photos of beautiful weather!

  2. The snow is so pretty! The consolation (at least what I tell myself) is that this time of year, the snow doesn’t last too long. It’s not pretty when it’s melting, but the sun is pretty intense and it disappears pretty quickly.

Did you see 3 Billboards? I highly recommend it.

    1. Sun? What’s that? We’re not likely to see much of it in the near future. And maybe more snow midweek (but maybe not, we were never supposed to get all this in the first place!).

I haven’t been to the movies at all this year. I actually want to try & get to one this week maybe. Although I the day I was thinking about is the next potential for some decent snow . . . might have to push that off to next week.

3 Billboards is on my very long list of things I want to see. Love Frances McDormand!

  3. Man, that’s a lot of snow!! I’m glad you were able to get out afterwards though! If we had that much snow here, the whole state would shut down for a week. Bunch of rookies. haha But, shoveling is good cross-training, right?

Ah, yes….anger and stress are definitely the best fuel for a speedy run!

    1. Well, we are used to big snows — I lived in both TX & MD so I know about states that don’t handle snow well. 🙂

Someday we’ll live somewhere where either it doesn’t snow so much or if it does, at least it’s SUNNY. Where is that yellow thing anyway?

  4. All of that snow came at once? YIKES! It does look pretty, but I know what a pain it is this time of year when the trees are starting to get their buds. We have a magnolia tree that gets most of its buds only to have that one last snow fall to freeze most of them off. We’ll see if that happens again this year…

    1. Yup; the day before there was no snow on the ground. It’s not actually unusual for us, but it was the biggest storm of the winter. So far. Not unusual to see snow on April Fools day, either.

  5. Have the same weather as you do. Didn’t have to shovel but I worked that day and had to clear off my car.

New running shoes this week and new work shoes. Actually worn them out with all the walking.

Trying to see all the movies before the Oscars.

Rented Victoria and Abdul which was good and murder on the orient express which was not.

    1. Clearing off that much snow is the pits. I saw one car driving around our neighborhood who hadn’t bothered So dangerous.

We haven’t seen a movie in a theater since last year. 😦 Either one of us or both of us have just been too sick & tired.

  6. I always get so excited about snow storms (Maybe its because I’m a teacher and I know school will either be delayed or cancelled….hehe). In any case, we did not get any snow with this most recent storm, just a lot of wind which downed our cell towers on Friday night. The snow does look pretty though. We’ve had a few days like that where it is unseasonably warm one day, and then snow the next. The calm before the storm like they say! Have a good week Judy! -M

  7. It’s funny but I had one of the best half marathons of my life when I was REALLY pissed off. IT must be something about anger and running, lol.

I can’t believe that you got so much snow! We luckily didn’t get any snow, but we had a lot of rain and wind which resulted in flooding and down power lines in some areas.

  8. Just tell Mr. Judy to make you really mad right before you run. LOL! That picture with the red shovel is lovely. I’d use that as a holiday card! The only thing wintry here is that Sleigh Ride shuffled into my tunes while doing intervals today. I just went with it and pretended I was cold. Thanks for linking!

    1. I’m not sure I want to give Mr. Judy license to make me mad. 🙂 Could be an interesting tactic, though!

Well, you have summer to slog through and we have winter to freeze through. And even though I’m really tired of being cold, I’d still rather that than heat & humidity!

  9. It’s so true that anger makes for a really good run!

    Thanks for sharing my link.

And wow, you really got hit! We didn’t get much but we drove through a band of it on our way to PA on Friday and it was really bad for those 15-20 miles!!

  10. Whoa that’s a lot of snow! We got wind and rain but thankfully no snow here. haha I have a friend that made me angry before a race once (it’s actually a really funny story……he told me that I couldn’t keep up with him) I ended up with a PR and I beat him by a few seconds. We joke about that day all the time!

    1. That sounds like a great story! Nothing like someone telling you you can’t do something to help you do it! Success is the best revenge. 🙂

Why is it we seem to be the only ones with snow? A friend posted a meme of Upstate NY with a woman wading through snow to hang her laundry titled: “Meanwhile,, Spring in upstate NY”.

  11. We were supposed to get an inch or two of snow today…instead it snowed all day and we got probably closer to 8 inches. I don’t think we’ve gotten a storm as big as yours all winter though! Well, I’m sure the ski resorts have, but not down here in the valley.

  12. I’m lucky, and my HOA contracts with a business to come shovel anything above 4 inches. If we get less than 4 inches, I have to shovel, but the snow’s normally dry and fluffy. I watched Coco last night instead of the Oscars, and loved it. Another hit for Pixar.

    1. My husband uses the snow blower & I do things like the pitstops for the dogs & the steps & touch up — which can often take more than 30 minutes.

And I shoveled the entire thing earlier in the year when it wasn’t much snow, the husband was sick, and it would have iced up if I hadn’t cleared it.

Did I mention we have a large driveway?

  13. That was some storm. I we’ve had storms but not that much at once. At least not this season! As for enjoying something new, I just bought a VitaMix & I really like it. I found a good way to get my leafy greens.

    1. Oh, we’re actually getting another one. Might be just as much, maybe even more — or less, who knows? Certainly not the weather forecasters. But it is coming down right now.

I’ve had my Vitamix for about 15 years, I think; maybe just a little less. Love it!

  14. Angry running makes for some speedy workouts, that’s for sure! Find someone to aggravate you before your next race. 😉

I’m so over this winter. I just want spring weather! The sunny kind, not the rain.

    1. Yeah, well, you know what they say about April. We’ll be complaining about heat before you know it, though. Well, some of us.

I think I’m usually too excited before a race to get angry. Slow fuse & all that (but watch out when I go off!).

    1. Well, a lot melted. We’re getting more today, and originally it was forecast to be even more than last week, but now it looks like it won’t be so bad. It would be by VA standards, though.:)
