Running Updates

Ya think? The sign 🙂 The rest was clear, though

Tuesday
We enjoyed a beautiful, sunny, blue skies day right before the next snowstorm was supposed to hit. And this time I was able to get out and run in it!

Doesn’t that door look like a coffin?

My knees were sore after Sunday’s run, which was a total surprise. Not the tightness of IT Band issues I’m used to, but more runners’ knee like achiness. So no strides today, although the overall pace was pretty much the same as Sunday. I really desperately needed that sunshine.

Thursday
I definitely could have run outside on Thursday, despite more snow. But then how could I test out the new grippers on the Skirt Sports Jette skirt? They seem more comfortable than the old grippers — I find I need to go up a size in Jette to feel comfortable, but I do not have skinny legs.

Oh, the run was okay too.

As seen on the run

Sunday
I won’t lie: the knees are still aching. I am doing clamshells, leg raises, squats, single leg bridges, etc. etc. I’m trying to slow down. They’re not painful, and they don’t seem to change my gait, but they are definitely making it known that they forgot how to run longer/faster.

I taped them up today, and while they talked to me during the run, they didn’t seem as bad post run. I’d like to be running longer, but I have to respect the knees. I was also super tired after a long day in the car on Saturday.

Many happy returns, Mom! She used to be taller than me; I was bending down, too!

Favorites of the week
The long day on the road was so that we can spend my mom’s 90th birthday with her. My sister was working, my brother lives on the West Coast — we’re planning a whole family shingding at the end of the month, which will also celebrate my Dad’s 92nd birthday (his is in a couple of weeks).

We brought cake, chocolate covered strawberries, flowers, a birthday balloon (and where they live brought by more balloons), and took them out to lunch. Mr. Judy was actually a trooper and picked up a lot of that for me (I picked out the cake and the card). Mr. Judy also had some of their old movies transferred to a couple of DVDs.

My mom said it all made her feel very special, and I know how hard it is for her, so we were both happy.

Best Buds

Interestingly Bandit seems to have taken a real shine to my Dad — pretty funny for the dog who was leery of men when we got him (and he was!). Lola is a bit afraid of my Dad. He’s often a little too rough with her, although this time he didn’t really do anything. He had some surgery on his arm, though, and I wonder if she smelled something she didn’t like when he tried to pet her.

We saw our first Robin today. In fact, an entire flock of Robins! I guess Spring really is around the corner . . . despite all the snow.

I’m wrapping it up with a few favorite blogs from this week:

This week I am also linking up with the Sunday Fitness & Food Linkup brought to you by Ilka @ Ilka’s Blog and Angela @ Marathons & Motivation.

Let’s get the conversation started:

Do your furkids show a gender preference?

Ever have trouble returning to running after time off (for whatever reason)?

Are you racing soon?

  1. I simply cannot believe that we are expecting another nor’easter on Tuesday – I’m SO over the snow!

Happy 90th Birthday to your mom! It looks like it was an amazing and fun celebration.

I’m so sorry that your knees are still aching. Do you run with any knee support at all? I always run with my Mueller Knee Straps (I got min from Amazon) and they help me out a lot.

  2. Your parents look quite robust and healthy for being in their 90s. Isn’t it amazing? My FIL is 85 but he seems much younger to me.

    Another nor’easter? That’s just crazy talk….. :p I hope…..

    1. Well, looks can be deceiving. They’re doing okay for their age.

We’re not supposed to get a lot of snow, but there is still some in the forecast. If the lower side is right it’ll only be a couple of inches. Still plenty of snow on the ground.

  3. I love that pic with your mom!! She looks great 😉 I have seen a lot of robins this week, and I noticed our magnolia tree has a bunch of fuzzy bids…that usually indicates there’s another frost advisory coming LOL

  4. Happy birthday to your mom!!! She looks so happy!

I’ve been watching the weather and I saw about another nor’easter. We haven’t had snow like that down here but I’m so over it. I can only imagine how you feel! Spring, please!!!

  5. HappyBirthday to your Mom! How great that you got to make her day so special. That photo of Bandit with your Dad is so sweet. I hope your knee issue goes away. Those mystery aches are so annoying!

    1. Well, I’m pretty sure if my mom had been sitting on the couch Bandit would’ve cozied up to her, too. OTOH, Mr. Judy was on his other side — but Bandit was still laying with his head on my Dad.

  6. I can’t wear a skirt with gripper things on the leg. They remind me of sticky lizard feet. Other girls swear by them. 🙂 I love that Bandit bonded with your Dad. I know he must enjoy those visits. Happy Birthday to your Mom. You’ve got great genes. Hope those knees settle down. I think they just need some time to adjust to your running schedule. Thanks for linking!

    1. Well, on the gene front, I do & I don’t. Longevity, yes. Living well — let’s just say there are lots of illnesses in my family tree. Cancer all around me. Hearing problems. Heart problems.

I agree about the knees. I’m fairly sure it won’t last too long as long as I’m smart, but it’s definitely annoying.

    1. I really like shimmer because it will go with anything. No clashing prints. 🙂

Yes, it is snowing. Again. We’re not supposed to get too much but seriously, right now anything is too much!

  7. So nice that you got to spend the weekend with your mom. Were you there Sunday too? I didn’t see you in the FRW mentor pic.

Rest those knees. You need them to run 18 miles.

I stick to my GGU. Don’t want the grippers or that short length. I like to cover my thighs more. Lol.

More snow tonight. I am so sick of it.

And yes a race on Saturday and lots more on my schedule.

      1. I’m not going to be a mentor. I only know about the meeting because of the photo and Jeri & Christina talked about it – it’s was orientation for all those mentoring.

I signed up for the Challenge. I love the Adv. group runners. Just wish I could go to the sessions.

  8. Seriously a third snow storm? And they say Chicago weather is bad. Ours pales in comparison. Happy Birthday to both of your parents, that’s wonderful. All of my dogs seem to prefer my dad as well. They snuggle up around him. I don’t get it but it makes him happy so it’s all good. Hope your knees settle down soon. Not fun.

    1. Yup, snowing right now. Each one seems to get just a little bit smaller, but there were basically three different forecasts for today, so we’ll see.

One knee seems back to normal, the other is still a bit aggravated, but I don’t think it will end up interfering with any plans. I hope yours doesn’t end up taking as long to heal as you think!

  9. Ugh to your knee pain…I hope it gets resolved soon! The KT tape has definitely helped me out but when it seems like you’re doing all the right things, it’s frustrating when something goes wrong!

Happy birthday to your mom, I’m glad she enjoyed her day!

  10. Happy birthday to your mom! My grandfather is turning 90 this July, and my mom and her siblings are already planning something.

I am finding it hard to do my runs at the moment, but I have to get them done. I don’t think I had a great base from January, and i’m feeling it now.

  11. Three Noreasters in a row is crazy! I hope the snow isn’t too bad for you. And that’s so nice that you were able to drive and spend your mother’s birthday with her 🙂 I hope the knee feels better this week.

  12. That pic if you & Mom is so precious. Reaching 90 is really something. As for sore joints, if I take off too much time they let me know by being painful. I actually feel better if I keep moving. Long distance can take a toll on them though. I started week 3 of my training for my first half.

    1. It’s always a balancing act with how much activity is the right amount.

I do come from a long lived family — except for the ones that died young, of course (like a grandmother I never knew, a brother I never knew, 3 of my uncles . . . I could go on).

Congrats on getting to week 3 of your training!

  13. I’m considering buying a fitbit tomorrow. Does that count for anything? I also love the shot of you and your mom … and blogs like this inspire me to fit some fitness into my days (although working part-time at Target for a couple of months, I’ve lost 10 pounds just being up and about!)

  14. Happy Birthday to your Mom!!! I’m loving the print on your skirt!! I haven’t stopped running/racing yet!! We have a Half on Saturday and RIGHT NOW nothing until May. We are mostly packed, just holding out on the kitchen and the things that we use daily.

    1. I’m pretty sure you’ll be filling up that racing calendar soon. 🙂

I don’t know how you guys who race all the time do it! Seriously! Racing is hard (even if you’re not going hard).

  15. Ooooh, I do love that Jette skirt pattern! New grippers???? How could they possibly be any better? I love the grippers on all of my SkirtSports skirts …they barely budge.

Bandit and your Dad make quite a pair…. so cute. Happy Birthday to your Mom and your Dad! What a blessing to still have your parents around and to be in what appears to be pretty good health!

Robins flying around is definitely a sign of Spring …hoping you guys don’t get hit too hard again with the snow! I just can’t even imagine.

    1. Grippers actually are a problem for me. So I like skirts with them for shorter runs, but for longer runs they can be a problem — for me. It’ll be a while before I can test these out on a longer run.

The health of my parents — not that great, really. But could certainly be worse, too.

Mr. Judy just told me that we got 10″ yesterday. Didn’t seem like quite that much to me. But still, the good thing is that the roads are warmer so they get cleared pretty quickly — and the snow doesn’t start sticking to the roads as quickly, either.

    1. Well, long lived, yes. All sorts of diseases run rampant in my family. And both my mother’s brothers were dead by about my age, too — although they pretty much brought it on themselves (smoking, overweight).

I’m pretty sure my knees were rebelling because I simply didn’t go slow enough when I got back to running. I sure thought I did, but I’ve never had runner’s knee before, so obviously I didn’t.

The good news is that one is back to normal. The other one is still talking.

Nobody likes a new ache! Spring is coming (despite the never-stopping snow) so it’s time to get more active!

  16. Awww, happy belated birthday to your mom and happy early birthday to your dad! I bet they are looking forward to their shindig with the whole family!

We somehow dodged all three nor’easters. I would have liked a little snow out of at least one of them, but no such luck. At least we got to enjoy the 20-inches of snow still on the ground in New Jersey this past weekend. Since we missed the snow, I’m moving on and ready for spring. I’ve been seeing lots of Robins for the past several weeks and Mr. and Mrs. Bluebird just showed up in our back yard last week. I was so happy to see them again!
