Our Icicles are Growing: 3/12- 18 Weekly Wrap

Yup, that was 3 nor’easters in 3 weeks. At the moment it looks like the fourth one will miss us next week, but we’re still at the third snowiest March since 1888 — and temps below normal for much of the month, which I can personally attest to this morning.

I’m joining up with the Weekly Wrap from Holly @ Hohoruns and Wendy @ Taking the Long Way Home to show how I continue to come back from illness and runner’s knee. And congrats to both our hosts for tackling half marathons this weekend!

Running Updates

Leftover nest or new one?

Monday
Back to back runs — they may be short, but it’s been a while since I’ve run two days in a row. I probably wouldn’t have, only yes, we’re expecting snow tomorrow and I didn’t want to run on the treadmill again. Thanks to taping my knees, it felt pretty good. Left knee felt fine afterwards, just a few twinges in the right one.

Didn’t want to be on the mill this time, but we do what we have to do

Wednesday
I knew that later on in the day, despite last night’s snow, I’d be able to run outside. Unfortunately I just had a bunch of stuff going on and I had to knock out this run “early” in the morning (which for me meant 8 am) — and also meant it was done on the treadmill, as the roads were still somewhat messy then (although fine later on).

Still taping both knees, although the left one seems fine now. But the right one is still a bit achy. I had a massage right after the run, and that felt great. I also have a chiropractor appointment for next week — I was due for one anyway. I also slowed the pace some more and shortened my run interval.

Those leaves are coming . . .

Friday
Finally: a sunny day. You know what that means here in the winter? Damn cold day. But I got out early, as the wind was only supposed to pick up later in the day. I only taped the right knee.

I shortened my run interval and had to keep an eye on my pace so I didn’t run too fast. The knee seemed better about halfway through the run, but there is still a definite ache. The other knee felt okay during and after — maybe just a slight tightening above the kneecap in the last half mile, but it felt fine when I was done.

One down!

I took photos of this house on 3 different walks — the icicles kept getting longer each time — which gives you an idea of how cold it is here

It was tempting to try to run longer, actually, but I want to run stronger ultimately, and luckily there’s still not really a lot on my schedule.

What our backyard still looks like

Sunday
Although just a tad on the cold side — teens are cold, with the snow pumping out some more, right? But it was sunny and relatively calm. So glad I didn’t join the group that tackled an equally cold morning that was also insanely windy yesterday.

The best thing about this run is that it felt pretty good. I’m sure the blue skies and abundant sunshine had something to do with it — but so did the pain-free left knee and the right knee feeling a lot better. Unlike Friday’s run, I just ran. The pace was a bit faster, no doubt due to the cold, but this run felt good.

He trained in India — impressive!

Favorites of the week
One of my goals for February was to actually get outside of the house and try some classes. Well, obviously that didn’t happen. So it became a March goal instead. I went for my first yoga class in a studio in quite a few years. I was disappointed that the owner is no longer teaching because of her pregnancy; I hear she’s really good. The studio was Wellnest Studios for anyone local. I have a 10 day pass, so I plan to be checking out a few more classes there. And probably explore a few other places close to home.

It’s the first time I’ve had a male yoga teacher. I wasn’t wowed by the class, but it wasn’t bad, either. There were two other new people in addition to me, and it’s a small room, so it was really crowded. I’m sure all the yoga lately has helped the knee along.

We rented “The Shape of Water” last night. It was definitely an odd movie, but I really liked it. Back in December, when my brother was in for my parents’ 70th anniversary, he liked it so much he saw it twice — but the rest of his family hated it.

Tonight we’re hoping to rent “3 Billboards Outside Ebbings, Missouri”.

I’m wrapping it up with a few favorite blogs from this week:

This week I am also linking up with the Sunday Fitness & Food Linkup brought to you by Ilka @ Ilka’s Blog and Angela @ Marathons & Motivation.

Let’s get the conversation started:

Have you ever had a male yoga teacher?

What about a male masseuse?

Do you think it makes a difference?

  1. Wow! You’re really stuck in winter right now. I was shocked how cold, windy, and snowy it was when we arrived in the Smokies. Great job running outside. I hope those knees continue to improve. Thanks for linking!

    1. Just think about how far north we are from TN. Of course we aren’t in the mountains — thank God! Elevation makes a HUGE difference.

We have one more week of cold, and even after that it’s supposed to stay unseasonably cold, but at least it’s supposed to warm up some. Hopefully that snow’s gonna be melting soon.

The knees are much, much better. Well, one knee is fine and the other one is getting there.

  2. I had a male yoga instructor back when I did Ashtanga. He was great. When the studio canceled that class, I left the studio. Since then it’s been all women instructors!

The amount of snow you guys have gotten is ridiculous! Hopefully spring will come soon!

    1. I’ve had a male masseuse, too. It was fine, but I admit that I prefer female.

I use Rocktape for my knees — I go months without it, but then I’ll need it for awhile. I find it adheres better than KT.

    1. This isn’t that bad for us. We kept having a lot of snow, then warming up, and it all melted — and this should be going away in the next couple of weeks because it’s supposed to start warming up.

We’ve had years where there’s way more than that on the ground — all winter long!

  3. Great job with your workouts! I hope that your knees continue to feel better! I did go to a class with a male yoga instructor once. He is actually a local guru in regards to yoga for athletes and his classes are excellent. I think that it all depends though. I don’t think that I’ve ever had a male masseuse….not sure how I feel about that lol.

    1. I have had a male masseuse a couple of times — I really needed a massage at those times, I was having some aches & pains, and it was fine, but truth be told, I do avoid the males if possible.

  4. Your icicle picture got me thinking…I don’t think I’ve seen any real icicles this winter…(?) There were some icicle-looking things on a tree (hanging from the frozen berries), but not any hanging from the roofs of houses. That’s odd!

    1. We’ve had lots of icicles. There was plenty of cold. I’m beginning to think I need to move to Iowa! But no, when we move, hopefully it will be somewhere warmer — or at the very least sunnier.

    1. I thought 3 Billboards was weird. Reminded me of Fargo, actually (which I didn’t like). I did like it, but no so sure it was an academy award winning role, even though I love Frances McDormand.

  5. Yeah so about Spring “starting” on Tuesday – I think that’s going to be a big ‘NO’ for us in the Northeast, lol. It’s just crazy how it’s been in the 20s and 30s all weekend in certain states – crazy!

Awesome job on you workouts this week! Happy that the knee is feeling better also – that’s a huge plus!

    1. Well, it may be cold but at least it’s sunny!

Yes, I’m very happy that one knee resolved quickly & the other one seems on the mend — just hoping it stays that way as I increase the distance.

    1. This much snow isn’t really that abnormal for us. What has been abnormal for us is the back & forth weather. We’ve had a lot of snow that melted completely, followed by more snow, more melt — since the beginning of December!

The calendar may say spring, but the temperature sure doesn’t.

  6. We’ve basically had no snow this winter – nothing that needed a shovel. I hate deciphering those aches and pains — or is it just an ache? My foot is almost better, but now I wonder if my other foot is bothering me sometimes. Argh! I’ve had male yoga instructors. I went to a male masseuse once for a sports massage. I wouldn’t feel comfortable for a full body massage ….

    1. I have had a couple of male masseuse — but I avoid it if I can.

My knees seem better. Just in time to go to the chiropractor, of course. It’s the miracle dr cure! I’m still going, as I try to go every other month just for maintenance.

It seems as we age it’s always something, though. 😦 I hope that both of your feet stay happy! Nothing worse than unhappy feet.

  7. Our snow has finally melted around here (for the most part) but I think we have more on our way tomorrow…that nor’easter that’s missing you is coming straight for us, lol!

I hope the tape is helping your knees; it has definitely helped with mine but I need to wear it more consistently on these long runs to ensure that they’re doing their job before the marathon comes!

I had a male yoga teacher once but it was a hatha practice, so very different!

    1. Ours is melting & we’re not supposed to get much snow. Let’s hope they’re right. Looks like you guys will get pummeled though.

Tape always helps me. So many people say it doesn’t help them — well, I’m just glad that it works for me!

I have another yoga class today, and it’ll have a sub, too — don’t know yet whether it will be a male or a female.

  8. I loved the shape of water.

Glad to hear you’re running again.

Not happy to return to the cold. Supposed to get a snowstorm in NYC on wed where I’m headed.

    1. One of the things I really love about that DVD is that most of the segments are only 10 minutes (the hips one is 20), so you can hit up what’s really bothering you.

It’s not so much for stretching, more for prehab.

Jasyoga has some great stretching routines!

It’s still cold here, but the snow isn’t supposed to get this far north. And so far there’s no sign of it. But there’s still a few more chances for flurries over the next week or so. We often greet spring with a snowstorm up here. 🙂

    1. We were lucky with this last storm — nothing! It was south of us for a change. Which made me very happy. 🙂

I’m not sure snow is completely done with us, but it looks like *maybe* the big storms are done. It has been known to snow in April sometimes though!
