Happy Knees, Happy Life: 3/26- 4/1 Weekly Wrap

Welcome to my last relatively easy week. It’s time for the training to begin! My goal races may be months and months away, but I’m the type of runner who really needs to train properly — or it hurts. And I don’t think it’s fun if it hurts.

I’m joining up with the Weekly Wrap from Holly @ Hohoruns and Wendy @ Taking the Long Way Home to share how I stayed active in a hectic week.

Running Updates

Auspicious start to the week — no snow at the park!

Monday
Today was picture perfect weather for running. I ran with the training group as a warmup, mentoring the women in the BOTP; last week’s runner did not come :(.

Then I did another 4.75 miles on my own afterward. No tape, and aside from a twinge here & there — you know, the kind where you think is this really a twinge? — I was okay. I cut it short at 4.75 figuring that between the warmup with the group and the following run I got in 5 miles. Still don’t want to push too hard but also wanted to take advantage of what most likely will be the nicest weather of this week!

Just me, Deena, & my half medals

Wednesday
It was a dark and stormy morning . . . well no, not really. What it was was gray, damp, and chilly. Even though it was supposed to warm up significantly by the afternoon, I needed to run in the morning. So I pounded out 3 miles on the treadmill.

I had a terribly restless night, tossing & turning & no idea why. The kind of day I’d usually push my run off to another day, but since we’d be away all weekend, it wasn’t possible. I just shortened up the run a bit — although this run felt good & I felt strong.

Happiness is a flat path with no snow/ice

Friday
I was kind of looking forward to this workout: 3 miles easy, 2 miles fast.  It’s been months since I pushed myself while running. It was unfortunately a gray chilly morning, but the rain stopped right before my run — winning.

The first three miles were indeed easy. The next one almost hit the right pace, but definitely wasn’t easy. I kind of wished it was just one mile fast. No reason not to do the workout though, so I buckled down and ended up with negative splits. And it’s been quite some time since I ran a mile at a pace below 12 minutes — let alone two! Mission accomplished.

They are really yummy!

Favorites of the week
On Friday’s run I decided to tackle some chores first, since it was cold and raining. By the time I headed out to run, though, I knew I needed something more than the rice cake + almond butter I’d planned. And then I remembered those protein cookies that have been stashed away for months . . . I gotta admit, I don’t usually eat something with that much sugar, but it sure hit the spot and I never got rungry (and had a protein bar post run, too).

182 years between them

No doubt by the time you read this we are either heading home from my parents or just got home. I’m sure it will be a hectic weekend. Trying to get together fifteen adults who live all over the country — even one coming in from India — and figuring out what to eat and wear — all on a holiday weekend, of course!

For those celebrating holidays, I hope you have a safe, happy holiday with loved ones.

I’m wrapping it up with a few favorite blogs from this week:

This week I am also linking up with the Sunday Fitness & Food Linkup brought to you by Ilka @ Ilka’s Blog and Angela @ Marathons & Motivation.

Let’s get the conversation started:

Are you an all or nothing person — gotta do it all or you feel like you’ve blown it?

Are you a fair weather runner?

Favorite Easter candy?

  1. Oh man, you definitely had a busy weekend! I hope everything went off without too many hitches (there’s always at least one)!

I like those cookies too but they definitely do have a lot of sugar. :/ I have some stashed away (snickerdoodle) and I try to forget that they’re there. haha!

I used to not be a fair weather runner (except for thunderstorms. I try to skip running in those.) but lately, I’d rather have the ‘mill than a rainy – especially when it’s cold – run. Normally I like the rain but I’m just not that into it lately. Maybe that will change when it stops being cold?

My favorite Easter candy is anything with peanut butter in the middle. 😀 However, I also like jelly beans.

    1. Everything went well this weekend, thanks. Fingers crossed, my parents might finally close on their house (selling the house I grew up, that is) next week.

I’m all about the chocolate & peanut butter. 🙂

I don’t mind rain much when it’s warm, but cold rain is the pits. And we’re due for a lot of it next week. 😦

  2. Woot! I’m glad to hear your runs went well (even if they were a tad shorter than you’d wanted). Pain free is awesome! Favorite Easter candy? Hands-down, Reese’s Peanut Butter eggs 😉 We’re headed to Walmart in a minute to see if we can score some post-Easter deals on them LOL That’s amazing your parents have all those years (and wisdom?) between them 😉

    1. Pain free is absolutely awesome. 🙂

I’m with you on the PB eggs, although I can make my own — that works better for me. I need portion control.

I do come from a very long-lived family for the most part, aside from 2 uncles who basically smoked themselves to death — by my age. 😦

But I was remarking to my husband that I don’t think any of my relatives where actually happy when they got to be over 85. I hope to be the first. Not going down with a fight!

  3. Happy birthday to your parents! It’s crazy to think 182 years between the two of them. We should only be that lucky to live so long, right? I’m a huge fan of the Lenny and Larry cookies. I take one to work for an afternoon snack every day. I like a sweet treat (with a side of protein)…..It’s better than junk lol.

    1. Well, I’m not as concerned by the amount of years as the quality of them. Unfortunately their quality of life isn’t that great any more. 😦

I am definitely a sweets girl. But I do have to be careful about the sugar! For most of us it gets harder as you get older.

    1. Nope, the whole family together doesn’t happen often at all, especially with the nephew in India!

It was an ok week. Very hectic and not a lot of sleep. Looking forward to some peace & quiet (and hopefully more sleep) this week.

Hope you had a great Easter!

  4. Nice return-to-training week! And, it’s wonderful your knee is doing well. I’m bummed to hear the lady from last week didn’t come to the group run. I hope she’ll be back. Poor sleep is so frustrating. I always have a song in my head, but when I start doing Math too — it’s a bad night’s sleep. It’s wonderful everyone could get together to celebrate your parent’s birthdays. Thanks for linking!

    1. I was bummed the lady didn’t return, but I wasn’t really surprised.

My trouble is rarely falling asleep. It’s staying asleep. There are worse things in life, of course.

Hope you had a great Easter!

  5. Are you an all or nothing person — gotta do it all or you feel like you’ve blown it? This is me to a T.

Are you a fair weather runner? I really don’t like running in rain. I get all kinds of rash & get so chilled/damp that it just isn’t enjoyable.

Favorite Easter candy? York Peppermint Patties.

    1. Thankfully I am not an all or nothing person. It really never works. And I’ve gotten better about it as I get older, too.

It’s really interesting reading everyone’s favorite candies — such diversity!

I don’t mind rain in the summer — sometimes it’s even quite nice — but I’m with you about feeling so chilled afterwards from a cold rain.

  6. I’ve had some restless nights lately too. I’m not sure why, but I’m wondering if it’s that milk thistle I’m taking. Supposedly it’s a little estrogenic. Making me flash. Ugh…

    Have a great week!

    1. I suspect mine was just some stress from getting it all done last week. I have slept better the last couple of nights. Exhaustion will do that to you.

I’ve taken Milk Thistle but haven’t experienced that — then again, I’m not very prone to flashes. Thankfully.

Hope you had a great Easter, Wendy!

  7. Yes I am definitely a fair weather runner. I hate the rain – this week will be challenging.

Too bad that lady in the FTC didn’t return. There’s a lot of that in the beginner group. I have yet to go to my group. Maybe tomorrow if it doesn’t rain and that may be it until the race. I miss Patrick and my advanced group friends, tough.

I’m not a candy person…now ice cream that’s different. I made the hubby go and out buy some tonigh because I just wanted some.

      1. It looks that way. I’ve been pretty lucky weather-wise but my luck may have run out.

He said he didn’t want any ice cream but I bet it’s gone when I get home from NYC.

        Maybe I’ll see you Sat.

    1. Well, I indulged in Cheesecake & a Passover 7 Layer cake on both days this weekend. 🙂 And some Indian candies my nephew brought with him.

So now it’s time for a little mini sugar detox. Which doesn’t mean I won’t have a little bit of chocolate today. 🙂

  8. I feel you on the cruddy weather. Even though I had a nice respite from it in CA, I thought by now, we’d have at least some vestiges of spring but other than birds, nada. Glad your knee is behaving. Hopefully mine will follow suit. I overbought candy this year because I ended up not doing baskets. I lean toward anything peanut buttery as well. Your parents make a handsome couple. How great to celebrate with them!

    1. Just some snow showers here this morning . . . then rain the next few days, At least I don’t have to shovel. 🙂

It was a nice family gathering. My Dad continues to go downhill all the time. Not easy on anyone. The circle of life, I guess.

Sending you continued healthy knee vibes! Time for that thing to heal. Past time!

  9. Happy knees are always a good thing! glad to see that you got in some awesome runs this week.

I actually didn’t buy any Easter candy this year but I LOVE the Reeses peanut butter eggs. That’s my favorite Easter candy for sure!

    1. I’m with you on the PB Eggs. And avoid them like the plague. It’s actually fairly easy to make your own & then I can have portion control.

Not this week for me though! I hope you had a great Easter, Kim!

  10. I’m definitely a fair-weather runner. I’ve been on the treadmill more this spring than I was last spring, but we’ve had huge weather changes, with brutal wind. It would not have been fun. Last spring made me question training for a spring race, and this spring is driving that point home.

    1. I actually don’t think I was on the treadmill as much this winter as last winter — but of course last winter I was training for 2 halfs! OTOH, last winter was also milder.

      Spring races are tricky!

  11. Look at you getting in those negative splits on your fast miles …sounds like your past few ‘easy’ weeks paid off for you! I do love Lenny & Larry’s cookies …when I managed the gym we kept them in the vending machine which meant they were at my disposal ALL the time!! I’d usually try to just eat half and save the other half for later. Lol

  12. I’m glad your knees are happy! I hope to be able to say the same at some point…just gotta get through these next few weeks!

Happy birthday to your Mom and Dad, what a blessing to live such a long live! I hope you all enjoyed your time together.

Favorite Easter candy? I do like those Reese’s eggs…can’t resist! Some jellybeans would hit the spot too! 😛

    1. I definitely hope you’ll be able to say your knees are happy soon, too. Not sure how mine will respond to going longer but I have a few more months before I need to worry about that.

      Love reese’s eggs. 🙂
