Well, the first thing I’d tell you is that we apparently had two tea dates in February because I forgot to change the subject for March’s tea date. It was that kind of month.

I’d also tell you that Gizmo, at 17, isn’t our oldest cat ever — in fact, he still has a long ways to go. Puss lived to 21. Females tend to live longer than males, just like us humans. If he does have more years, I hope they’re happy, healthy ones.

I’d tell you I am constantly having to hunt down where Gizmo throws up. We hear the noises, but when I get out there, there is curiously nothing to found. Until Mr. Judy steps in it, because apparently doing so once wasn’t enough to get him to wear slippers (sorry, honey, you know it’s true).

Or someone manages to throw up in the fifteen minutes it takes me to make the bed. I have no clue who it is (well, I have a clue, but I’m never sure). And it’s always harder to clean up unless you manage to catch them in the act.

I’d tell you that Gizmo just turned 17. He is way overdue for a vet appointment. In general he seems t be doing fairly well, but he is definitely drinking more water and peeing more so I worry about his kidneys, of course, because I’ve had cats with kidney disease in the past.

 

The good news is he wants to eat. Like all the time. Thankfully he hasn’t taken to waking us up in the middle of the night yet, but I can hear him pacing in the hallway outside our bedroom before I get up most mornings (which often bears the brunt of the above paragraph’s problems).

Could be hyperthyroidism . . .

I’d tell you it’s actually a good thing he’s hungry all the time. As annoying as it is, I’ve had more than enough of my share of furkids who won’t eat for whatever reason.

I’d tell you Gizmo is a very sweet, biddable cat. I could give you many examples, but this story illustrates his nature well:

 

I was sick one day, in bed, when I heard cats yowling. Tempted to ignore it, I knew I had to investigate. And I discovered both Simba and Gizmo outside, yowling at some cat. Yes, the window was open, but there was a sunscreen on the outside and some bars propped up on the inside. And they managed to pry off both. Our windows went almost to the floor in that house, and that’s how we let some air in without letting the cats out — or so we thought.

I told them to get in, and Gizmo hopped right back in. Simba went tearing off after the offending cat, and almost followed the cat when it jumped the fence of our neighbors; there was a large dog in that yard. Eventually I did manage to coax him into a carrier.

Of course, all bets are off when it’s time to get into the crate to go to the vets.

I’d tell you it’s all about the hair. Well maybe not all, but it definitely comes into play. I runfess that I have chosen the treadmill on iffy weather days on more than one occasion so that my hair wouldn’t look horrible. Like when I needed to run before going to my parents’ for my mom’s birthday.

Obviously I often have horrible apres-run hair, but there are times when I’ll do almost anything to keep it looking good.

Tea? Iced Tea? Coffee? Decaf? Green smoothie?

  1. Jerry who is a male is 20. And hungry all the time. Yes. I have 3 old cats that puke. My hubby is blind to it.

    Slater only comes into the house by climbing on the roof and through upstairs windows.

    Lucky for me the hubby is charge of all things cats. I just let them. Lol.

    No I would never take to the treadmill to save my hair.

    My hair tends to look the same no matter what which reminds me I have a hair apt this week. Thank god.

  3. The oldest we’ve ever had a cat live was fourteen, until now. We think (she was a rescue, a stray) she is fifteen, the asses age given her by the rescue site.
    Nelle just turned four and she throws up all the time. Usually we hear her and its a simple clean-up, but recently I was washing walls behind a bench and found very dried up-chuck on the wall and into the radiator. Yuk. It took over half-an-hour just to clean that little bit of matter. She’s worth it.

    1. Giz is thankfully the only one that throws up on a fairly regular basis, but then again, he’s really old.

      Lola does on occasion, but it’s very unusual for her. Bandit doesn’t often, but he does occasionally & then there’s usually absolutely no warning & I believe he was the culprit behind the while I was making the bed incident — but we’ll never know for sure.

  4. Carlo goes in spells with the drinking/peeing so I’m pretty sure there are kidney issues but at his age? It’s not like I’m going to do anything about it, other than make sure he’s happy and not suffering. He is at a good eight and a robust eater so there’s that. I need a haircut. I always do.

  6. Cocoa doesn’t ever not have a ball with her. She sleeps with one next to her. She’s very smart. If no one plays with her, she’ll go to the stairs, push the ball down, retrieve it and repeat…

    1. Since we are a multi furkid household, toys are never just out there. Bandit likes retrieving a ball, but just a few times usually & he’s done. Lola was never a ball girl. 🙂

      That is so smart — and cute! — that Cocoa plays ball by herself.

Our cats have a large, fully enclosed area in the backyard that they can get to anytime through a cat door – but they will still sneak out the doggie door into the wider world any chance they get, so we have to watch it closely. And when they do manage to get out, they usually bring dead mice and voles inside to play with. Lovely.

    1. Gizmo has a large kennel in the backyard, too. And he can catch animals — done that, and of course then brings it inside (dead or alive).

      I stopped letting him outside early — we close the window at night — that & his age seems to have mostly solved the problem.

  8. Aw, you take such good care of your furkids! I thought I could get away with a mid day run without needing to shower after, or at least with just a quick rinse, but my hair was a hot mess, so ….

  9. Loved reading about Gizmo! We had 2 cats – a brother and sister – who lived to 18 and 20 years old. I miss them dearly!

    I usually wear a hat when I run (at least in the winter, which seems to be never ending for us too!), so I have to take a shower and wahs my hair after each run, or else I have hat head for the rest of the day.

    1. We also had Gizmo’s brother, but lost him to lymphoma 5 years ago. He was just shy of 12. 😦

      I definitely don’t wash my hair 4 times a week (which is what I usually run); then again, I don’t work, so I can deal with the hat hair. Kind of. 🙂

  10. Hair? Fortunately, I had a hair appointment yesterday and the locks got some (updated) shear love 😉 The tell tale sign I have been on a long run and not had time to wash the hair is when I’ll either have an especially (intentionally) messy bun, or I’ll swirl a few ‘beachy” waves through it.

    1. Actually most of my hair survives a run –except the bangs. event though I’ve pretty much grown them out. I’ve begun to wear headbands now & again to corral it all, but that doesn’t work for me in the summer (although messy buns absolutely do work in the summer & I practically live in them!).

    1. When I lived in TX, yeah, my hair could really grow! That humidity in the summer — awful!

      I am not quite sure what we will do when Gizmo is gone (which I really do hope isn’t for a few more years). I have never not had a cat in my entire life!

  14. Gizmo sounds like a great cat! Thanks for sharing so many stories today. Hope he stays around for a few more years. Our pup is 10 1/2 now. She’s still very spry and often acts much younger, but we’re not-so-secretly scared of the day when we’ll have to say goodbye. We are very attached to her. 🙂 Enjoy your weekend!

    1. I get it. Lola’s 12; Bandit is around 9. They’re little dogs, so they tend to live fairly long. They tend to appear on the blog a lot more often than Giz, because let’s face it, Gizmo mostly sleeps & eats these days. 🙂

  15. Happy Birthday to Gizmo ..such a handsome fella! I’ve never had a cat but one time, many years ago when I was single, my neighbors cat decided he liked hanging out with me better and would just come over and stay for several nights before going home. It was weird to me because dogs just don’t do that. Lol

    I can get away with a short 3 mile run without having to wash and style my hair ..but anything longer than that is a no go!

    1. Cats can definitely be that way — decide where and with whom they want to spend times. I did once have a dog follow me on a walk (before I had dogs) and try to actually follow me into the house when I got home!

      I’m not saying my hair looks good if I run & don’t wash it, but what can I say? It takes too long to dry most of the year (I air dry it).

  16. Furbabies…so much work, but so worth it! We are forever cleaning up cat throw up (who am I kidding..*I* am forever cleaning it up), too.

    I think it is brilliant that you run on the treadmill to save your hair. I think I will borrow that trick from you 🙂
