We got a couple of Spring-like days and then we descended back into gray skies, chilly temps, and rain. Well, it’s almost May so it’s time for those April Showers to get lost — don’t you think?
There was a lot of synchronicity going on this week, too: meeting the DJ from the station I listen to, who is training for Freihofers and also running the same 5k as me Sunday (alas, I did not see her); and also meeting one of the coach’s wife at my yoga class (I happened to be wearing the training tee) — it’s a small world!
I’m joining up with the Weekly Wrap from Holly @ Hohoruns and Wendy @ Taking the Long Way Home to share how I got out there (most of the time) and got active despite the dreariness.

Running Updates
Monday
The sun came out to play! Finally! What a difference a week makes. We finally had a glorious Spring day — it got up to 70! — I got to run in a skirt. It was simply awesome. Roughly 2 miles with the training group and another 3 miles after on my own. A good run & a good pace.
I finally got to take out the Skirt Sports Jette skirt and its new grippers for a warm run. The old grippers made it difficult for me to run more than a few miles in the Jette — sometimes they caused chafing — it was about 5 miles total and so far, so good.
Tuesday
Be still my heart. Two spring-like days in a row. It seemed to take forever for my legs to warm up and get moving, though, despite the pleasant temps and the opportunity to run in a skirt the second day in a row. In the end, though, this run was just fine. I even took Bandit out for his first run of 2018.
And I saw my first daffodils — Spring really has finally sprung!
Thursday
With a Skirt Sports order of short skirts arriving the day before, and a windy/cloudy forecast, I was tempted to run on the treadmill to try out skirts. Only I didn’t. After walking the dogs I knew it would be fine to run outside (since it didn’t rain) and it was.
I’m sure Bandit enjoyed his 3/4 of mile run (I pick him on the cool down). He’s actually been keeping up fairly well, no doubt because it’s not warm yet — that’ll change next week!
Saturday
The training group ran a whole 25 minutes straight. And even I was able to do it, running with the BOTP ladies. Yes, it was chilly and windy but not actively raining so I call that a win. I also left my mentees to do my strides.
Sunday
We had an almost-reunion of the Wineglass girls — one was running the Jersey Half, another had done her long run the day before — at the Cherry Blossom 5k. Everyone else had done this race a few times but I never had. It was a nasty, cold, rainy day, and I’ll recap the race on Tuesday.
Favorites of the week
The week started off so nice — we finally fired up the grill, and even ate our dinner outside. During the summer we are often plagued by hornets, so it was nice to eat outside without fear of getting stung.
I tried the Frozen Matcha Latte from the No Meat Athlete Cookbook (Amazon Affiliate link) this week and like it so much I made it the next day, too. I did throw in a date for a little extra sweetness.
Blog posts that caught my eye this week:
This week I am also linking up with the Sunday Fitness & Food Linkup brought to you by Ilka @ Ilka’s Blog and Angela @ Marathons & Motivation.
Let’s get the conversation started:
Run the day before a race: yeah or nay?
What makes you decide to run a race (location, friends, cause, chance of awards)?
Don’t you hate having to wait to try out new gear?
Nice week recap. Your workouts are going so strong. Congrats!

Thanks, Laurie! Running has been going pretty well. That may be because I’m just now starting to really train . . .

I am ready for spring. It seems I have to go to Florida for warm temps.
I only bought one skirt (Lionness) and I wore it on the treadmill. I’m not sure why since my drawer is busting with skirts LOL.
Definitely not chance of awards because you never know who is going to show – I like a race that is well organized, has good food and I know others running the same one.
Never run the day before (unless it’s for bling & fun). With 3 days off before my 5K Pr, it seems that I do need fresh legs. Only 2 days off before today;s race. Todays race was much more enjoyable without rain and when there was a craft/food festival there too.

I actually do prefer to rest before a race, but since I’m already out there mentoring, that’s just the way it is right now. It’s not like anything I’m running right now is a goal race.

I thought this 5k was for a PR. But there are plenty of opportunities out there.
Since my PRs are a surprise, I guess I don’t have a goal race. Especially the half marathons this year.

I do have goal races. Doesn’t mean you always hit your goals, it just is what it is & obviously it never stops me from trying. 🙂

And oh yeah, Freihofers is not a goal race for me. 🙂 I expect to be much slower in that one.

That is not an easy race with the hill and the crowd at the beginning.

Great job this week! I often run the day before a race but I try to avoid that if it is a goal race. I almost always go to hard if I do a 5k before a half or full. I would rather take it as a rest day.
hmm…. that drink sounds delish… I need to check out that cookbook.

I like to rest before a race too. None of these races have been goal races, though. I’m one of the mentors for the training group, though, so it just so happens that I’m running the day before the races — but it’s very easy running, since I bring up the rear.
The next 5k I’m thinking about is a sat, though, so I’ll no doubt do a rest day before it.

We haven’t had it warm enough to eat outside yet. The forecasters keep promising warmth, yet it hasn’t come. Even this week, it was supposed to be 80 and now they are scaling it back. It’s been a tough spring for all of us. Anxious to read your race recap!

I hate when they keep pushing out the warmth. We’re supposed to get VERY warm (after today, when I have to run in cold rain — again! — and some places are even getting snow).
But more rain. I think we’ve had 6 straight days of rain. I swear, we deserve a really, really nice summer.

Those rare spring-like days are a gift this year! Glad you got to enjoy a few!

Seriously, that’s true — nice spring days have been very scarce. 😦

How fun to meet new people all running related 😉 The running community is pretty awesome! I have about two more weeks in the US and am hoping the temps warm up while I’m here, so I agree that it’s time for May flowers, not showers!

It is supposed to warm up, although I suspect by your standards it will still feel cool. 🙂
Running communities are definitely awesome!

I sometimes run the day before a race…but if I do, it’s only 2-3 miles max, and at a very easy pace. Gosh you comment about having to wait to try out new running gear…that’s torture!!

I should be able to try out my new skirts this week, but one run might have to be on the treadmill — and it’s a tempo — talk about torture!

Two days of Spring weather? Better than none! I’m impressed your running group is up to 25 minutes of non-stop running. I do not run the day before a race. I think I need my rest. LOL. Grilling out sounds wonderful. Even though we’ve been in spring mode for months, that’s something we haven’t done yet. Thanks for linking!

The running group — the beginner group, anyway — follows the C25K program. So that 25 minutes of running is a big leap for a lot of them.
I agree with preferring more rest before a race, but none of these races have been goal races for me so I’m just going with the flow.
I also can’t believe you haven’t grilled. Or maybe because our opportunities to grill are so few, we take any chance we can get!
Bandit loooooooves to be out there with us, even though we don’t feed him out on the deck. Oddly, Lola refuses to come out on the deck anymore. No idea why.

I’m ambivalent about running the day before a race – it really depends on what else I’ve done (or haven’t done) that week. If I haven’t been able to run for a few days, I think a mile or 2 helps shake the rust off.

I usually do find I do better with more rest before a race. I’m not one of those antsy people who can’t sit around, LOL!

Great week of workouts! I love spring and flowers, but I agree that the rain can be a real bummer!
I’m 50/50 on running the day before a race: I don’t want to be stale from taking too much rest before, but I’ll try to take it really easy if I run the day before.
Thanks for linking to my post!

I don’t think I’m ever stale. 🙂 I do like to rest before a race; it just hasn’t worked out that way right now. Luckily not goal races, though.
You’re welcome.

Sounds like a great week! How cool that you were able to randomly meet the DJ and your coach’s wife. I love when things like that happen.

I got a new Running Skirt I ordered for B2B, and I tested it out on the treadmill. It arrived last Monday, and Tuesday was snowing. Treadmill it was.

I might have to test something on the treadmill this week. 😦 I hope not, maybe not if it’s a warm rain (and not a thunderstorm!). We shall see.

While we haven’t had much rain, I feel like we’ve been gypped on spring weather in April cuz its been freezing. That said it was 82 yesterday. Summer is here.

It has rained for 6 days straight. Cold rain. Yes, the warm weather has finally made its way out here today — or so they say — and yes, tomorrow will be summer-like, and yes, yet MORE rain on its way later in the week — still next week looks to much more seasonal. Thank God!
