Enjoying single digit runs: 8/13-19 Weekly Wrap

Weather stalking. Cross training. Lots of baking — I needed to restock the pantry! Humidity. All easy runs that never feel easy due to the weather.

I’m joining up with the Weekly Wrap from Holly @ Hohoruns and Wendy @ Taking the Long Way Home as I’m winding down (or is that up?) for my first race past the half marathon distance. I try not to think about that much!

Running Updates

The ducks are taking over the park

Monday
Cloudy. Humid. Miserable. On speed dial, apparently.

This made me smile on a humid run!

Tuesday
This may actually have been my “best” run since coming home from ID — mainly because I got rained on the first couple of miles (and wished it rained longer). It makes it feel just a little less soupy — which is pretty funny when you think about it. I still can’t say I really enjoyed it; this humidity simply has to go!

Thursday
I finally caved: it was 87 feels like 90 and sunny. So yes, sue me, I ran on the treadmill.

Forget ladies who lunch, how about ladies who skirt?

Sunday
Saturday was horribly humid with threat of rain, so most of us chose to run Sunday instead. I won’t lie: running “just” 8 miles felt like heaven. Probably didn’t hurt that I was running with someone a bit slower than me, too.

We did not plan to match!

And noticed the unplanned matching of Skirt Sports!

We all loved these; can’t wait to see them finished!

Favorites of the week
There were a few bumps in the road this week — dying AC in the midst of an almost heatwave, I’m looking at you! — the continued rain, the ever escalating humidity, the bump at the scale from probably a bit too much indulging my sweet tooth last week + all the baking.

Some weeks are like that. But getting together with friends and finding someone to run with that was almost perfect. We both run/walk, our intervals are pretty close, I’m just a little faster — which of course makes that long run feel a lot easier. Not to mention not a double digit run in sight this week!

And the painted beams above along the rail trail caught everyone’s eyes! They’re not done yet, but they’re pretty cool.

This week I am also linking up with the Sunday Fitness & Food Linkup brought to you by Ilka @ Ilka’s Blog and Angela @ Marathons & Motivation.

Let’s get the conversation started:

Can’t live without AC or don’t want it?

Would you rather run with someone faster or slower than you?

Tackle the uphills in the beginning or the end of a run/race?

  1. Not a fan of AC and turn it off at night.

Yes the weather was ugly this week. Even hotter and more humid in the city.

Running with someone faster is obviously better. It makes you run at a faster pace. But it is easier to run slower.

Good luck with the weather next weekend.

    1. I don’t sleep well when it’s hot, and our bedroom is on the second floor — nowhere to sleep on the first floor. 😦

Running with someone faster can work sometimes — but not all the time. Yesterday definitely felt easy for me, but that could just be that I had company!

      Thanks.

      1. Our bedroom is on the 2nd Fl. But neither one of us like it cool.

Definitely easier when you can chat the whole fun. Makes the time go faster. Still felt very hard for me. Not used to running distance.

    1. We don’t even keep things super cold. There was a big discussion about temps & AC at our brunch.

Our biggest problem is that the main living area (including our bedroom) is on the top floor & it really heats up — even when it isn’t that hot.

The AC unit is all & it will need to be replaced. It’s just a matter of whether or not we can get it to limp along until the floor (or I kill Mr. Judy due to heat insanity 🙂

  2. You got in some solid runs this week! I’d rather run with someone slightly faster than me as long as I can keep up. I have a hard time going slower but if I’m chatting with a friend that works too.

  3. I totally don’t blame you for running on the treadmill – I did the same thing for one of my runs last week.

I did my long run on Saturday and slugged through 10 miles. Of course I wake up today and the weather is so much better – ugh! I feel like my weather apps are all over the place lately so it’s hard to decide which day on the weekends to do my long runs, lol

  4. I actually don’t have AC in my apartment. On the 95+ degree days we’ve had here in CHicago this summer I took an ice cold shower and slept in front of a box fan ha!

    1. OMG I’d die. When we lived in VT we didn’t have AC. Now granted, it doesn’t get super hot in VT — but we’d usually have one or two heatwaves in the summer, and like this house, our bedroom was on the second floor. Unlike this house, we did have a basement & a couch down there. It was still awful!

  5. Oh no, dying AC is the worst! I’m pretty extreme in my need for AC…in addition to our central HVAC, I have a window AC in my office and a window fan in the bedroom. In my defense, both those rooms are upstairs and our house’s insulation leaves a lot to be desired.

    1. My husband thinks I’m extreme in my need for AC, but I’m really not. But I also do feel the heat much more than him. It’s been a struggle.

It’s not dead yet, but it is definitely not working well and we have to jump through hoops to make sure it doesn’t ice up.

At least we no longer live in TX (where we also did deal with a dying AC).

  6. How funny that you and Darlene wore matching patterns!

I think Friday was the worst day here. It was absolutely sweltering. With that being said, I’m not really a fan of AC. I want to be warm in the summer. We have central air and keep it on 24/7 or else Baylee pants. Gotta keep her comfy!

    1. Actually that wasn’t me with Darlene. 🙂

We had to be careful with temps when Chester was alive, too. And I’m pretty sure that Giz needs it to be a bit on the cooler side so he doesn’t get dehydrated.

  7. It’s so funny when you get used to those super long runs and then have a cutback week – it almost feels weird to run in single digits! Nice job with all your workouts. I saw that pic on IG – so funny how you all coordinated, I thought it was intentional!

And the painted beams are really pretty! I love urban murals – we have them all over the place in Philly!

  8. Can’t live without the AC here in the south! Humidity has been just plain ridiculous. Isn’t it amazing how the perspective on what is considered a long run changes depending on what you’re training for? I had 7 for Saturday and it sounded long to me. Lol

    1. We had AC problems towards the end when I lived in TX, too. And the reason I got my Honda is they were never able to fix the AC on my Toyota.

It wasn’t that long ago that I was facing my first double digit run in MONTHS. And yes, it was actually a bit scary! Now the race is scary since it’s been a while since I ran double digits but I know I also need that rest.

  9. You must be getting all the rain we are not. Although it’s finally raining here now. We’re overall quite dry though, but hot and humid as all get out. I don’t blame you one bit for taking your run to the mill in those conditions. I’d do the same.

    1. We have had a ridiculous amount of rainy days. I don’t think we’ve had a dry week all summer, and usually there are more than a couple of days with rain — the upside being that we haven’t had to water the lawn. At all.

  10. AC tends to do that, doesn’t it? I absolutely need AC after living in Texas. I get a sense of what bad AC is like at my work building, and love when I walk in my house, getting that cool blast of AC.

    1. NY is far cooler & less humid than TX. Even though we’ve been having a rotten summer, it doesn’t compare.

Unfortunately our living area is on the second floor & it just really heats up — even with windows open in the morning, even on cooler days.

    1. It depends on how much slower. This was perfect for me — at least on this day. And I had a much speedier run this morning (solo, although I did run into a friend) — no doubt because the 8 miles were truly easy.

  11. I’m very impressed with the coordination of the outfits! I hope you’ve gotten your A/C repaired. We certainly couldn’t do without our units. Yay for a new (almost) perfect running buddy. Maybe she’ll get a little faster and you’ll be evenly matched? Those beams are pretty cool. I love it when regular things are turned into art. Thanks for linking!

    1. I find paces are paces and it doesn’t usually pay to wait for people to get faster (Darlene is still waiting on that with me — I may be faster, but it’s still slow for her, and besides, she now has running buddies who are more compatible).

Luckily AC is not as important here as it is down south, but I still have difficulty sleeping if the bedroom isn’t cool!
