Soaking up that sea air: Spilling over tea/coffee October 2018

 teaoct18

Anyone that follows me knows last weekend didn’t go as planned, other than soaking up some sunshine (way too much sunshine, actually) and basking in the sea air by the Ocean.

Confessions of a Mother Runner

Pull up chair and mug with Coco and Deborah and me for the ultimate coffee tea date.

If we were enjoying high tea . . .
I would tell you that while my finish time for my latest half certainly wasn’t what I wanted or dreamed about, I am still happy I ran the race.

There is only one half that I regret running — one I went into injured, not realizing how badly the race would aggravate said injury and how long it would take before I could run without pain again — months, really.

Like every race I run, though, I learned something from that awful half just as I learned something from this weekend’s half. You’ll have to wait until Tuesday to find out what I learned! 🙂

Happy to have time by the sea

If we were enjoying high tea . . .
I’d tell you that one way I deal with the ever shortening days over the last few years is by keeping extremely busy during Fall. This year is no different. I find when I’m busy, I may still get more tired and unmotivated as the daylight hours dwindle, but I’m just too busy to brood on it.

Finishing is winning & so is bumping into Skirt Sisters

If we were enjoying high tea . . .
I’d tell you that I wish I’d known that a.happy.sole was going to be at my half last weekend! I only found out when she posted to IG. I messaged her, but she’d left directly after the race.

I will have to console myself with meeting up with several skirt sisters (unplanned) at the race.

If we were enjoying high tea . . .
I’d tell you that skirts were also everywhere in the race last weekend. One was even a guy running in a skirt. Unfortunately, not too many from Skirt Sports.

I also saw quite a few people wearing the long sleeve race shirt during the race. Folks, it was a hot one. What were they thinking?

And then there were the two chicks wearing Lululemon tights and sport bras. Seriously, you ladies had bangin’ bodies, and if you had enough confidence to run in a sports bra why would you also run in tights on a hot day?

If we were enjoying high tea . . .
I’d tell you you better believe I’m looking for a little redemption at my half at the end of October. I’m not sure that I do have a faster half in me without a downhill race, but I definitely know that I have a faster half in me than my last one!

It’s not so much the finish time that bothers me — believe me, I was well aware that you can’t PR forever — what bothered me was that I was just not able to keep on running. Physically I’m sure I could have, although the sun was most definitely taking a toll on me (and everyone around me if you look through Mr. Judy’s photos), but mentally I just couldn’t take it anymore. And I hate when that happens.

But first there’s a little 10k to run with some friends . . .

Tea? Iced Tea? Coffee? Decaf? Green smoothie?

Do you run in just your sports bra when it’s hot (on top, of course, I’m assuming something is on the bottom half)?

Do you wear the race shirt in the race?

Ever seen a guy racing in a skirt?

    1. LOL! I have heard of guys running in skirts before, usually to support some cause, but no idea why he was in this race.

Not too long ago I saw a guy at Trader Joes wearing a kilt-like (although not plaid) skirt, kind of like a utility skirt instead of a tool belt. I soooooo wanted to photograph him.

  1. Um no. Not in a sports bra.

Not many skirts in Montreal. Someone local found me because she looked for a skirt.

I’ve all had races where we gave up mentally and for me it’s after mile 10. It usually means that I went out too fast or my legs have been racing too much or maybe I realize that my finish time is going to suck so why kill myself.

I hoped you enjoyed running along the ocean and focus on the positives of the race.

As I said previously, 4 big races in 4 months is a lot esp if you train for all of them.

    See you Sat??

    1. Nope, it was definitely the heat at the race. Lots of runners were struggling with it — although some had good races. Sunny & hot will almost always get me, apparently.

I did really enjoy running on the boardwalk & while I kind of wish it were rainy, I know that makes them super slippery so I’m still glad it wasn’t. And Sunday was actually the best day of the weekend!

      Yes, I’ll be there tomorrow.

      1. I only did 7 last week instead of 12 and I would normally do at least 10 but I don’t have time so skipping the double digit runs for this race. I guess Paris will be just for fun…..

  2. We all have bad races. Ahem. I look at those races as opportunities to think what you could do better. And sometimes it’s just out of your control (like heat and hills you didn’t know about). The best thing to do is to run another one–redemption always feels good.

There’s no way my abdomen will ever see the light of day. I may be slender but pregnancy ruined my abs and now I’m left with a crinkly abdomen. Ugh.

    1. This belly was never pregnant & it still has rolls. Certain things about midlife suck, right?

It was the late start & the heat that got me Sunday. Not much I could do about that, although I did make a few mistakes.

I don’t think I’m really looking to PR my half at the end of the month, just to run it the way I know I can. 🙂 So let’s hope for no Indian summer . . .

  3. Sorry to hear your race wasn’t what you hoped for. Any trip to the beach has to be fun, though, right? Your next half will be better. I sometimes think we don’t give ourselves enough credit for running in adverse weather conditions – in your case the hot sunshine.

I can’t remember seeing a guy run in a skirt. A kilt, yes, even a tutu, but not an actual skirt.

I can’t imagine why some people wear tights when it is hot. That would drive me crazy!

    1. Yes, it was a fun weekend despite the poor performance. At least for me. 🙂 I love the ocean and don’t get to it often, but I will be near it again at the end of the month!

I would’ve died in tights (even if I were only wearing a sports bra on top).

  4. I hope you are not too hard on yourself about your race. I’ve come to realize that the accomplishment is crossing that finish line. Look forward to reading about it. I have seen guys in tutus and and Kilts at races.

  5. I always wear a shirt, even when it’s hot. I think of all the sunscreen I would need, and inevitably miss a spot. Shirts are so much better than even my high school years. I’d wear cotton since that’s all there was.

  6. Heat has a way of unraveling the best of us, so we adjust our goals and do the best we can in the conditions we’re dealt. The 11th anniversary of my hottest run to date is this weekend. I’ll be telling that story for ever. Haha! Enjoy that sea air!

    1. It’s funny I wanted to do this race because coming through the town 3 years ago and enjoying it so much — but not feeling well & so missed out on running on the boardwalk.

Well, I made up for that this time. 🙂

  7. You’re so busy! Great questions… Yes I most definitely run in my sports bra only. I hate sweaty, sticky shirts. I’ve seen a guy running in a tu tu during a marathon. I have worn the race shirt because the weather changed and it worked better than the shirt I packed. I’m not superstitious, obviously.

  8. Yes, I have worn the race shirt to the actual race 😉 But I have never run in just a sports bra, except for on my own treadmill (and we all know how often THAT happens). I’m far from a prude, but I think a sports bra is still a bra, and not a “shirt.”

    1. I’ve only run in a sports bra on my treadmill, too (which I do more frequently than you, obviously). The whole sunscreen thing . . . not to mention showing off all the jiggly bits, of course.

  9. Some people must think they’re supposed to wear the race shirt. At my conference fun run people pulled the shirt on over whatever they wore to the meeting spot. (I just grabbed my shirt after). Still waiting on fall weather where I live too.

  10. I’ve definitely been getting more tired and unmotivated, especially when it’s super dark outside when I’m supposed to wake up, but I’ve definitely been trying to stay busy too!

I’ve seen guys racing in dresses for the Red Dress Run!
