Don’t Patronize me!: 11/26 -12/2 Weekly Wrap

On my Friday on my long run, this guy passed me, calling out passing on the left. No biggie, right? Only he also said older, slower runner passing. Well, you’re passing me, so obviously you’re not running slower than me.

I get it, he said he was 69 (no idea why he felt he needed to share that info), so I’m sure for him he’s slower. He also felt the need to say “you’re out here doing it!”. Oh really? I didn’t notice that (insert snarky inner voice). Hrumph. Just call me Scrooge.

I’m joining up with the Weekly Wrap from Holly @ Hohoruns and Wendy @ Taking the Long Way Home to share how this slow old gal is still getting it done.

Running Updates

Tuesday
I knew Tuesday was supposed to be messy, but when I had the opportunity to finally see “A Star is Born” on Monday, I took it (I thought it was good, but not quite the rave everyone seems to think it is).

So treadmill Tuesday it was. I have a feeling I’ll be spending a lot of time on my treadmill this winter. I ran a mile, stopped, did some prehab stuff, ran another mile, and so on. I wanted to get 6 but frankly 5 seemed to take forever!

The shoes are actually orange, but the jacket was just gray!

Friday
That’s more like it. My runs have been slooooow lately. I’ve just been running easy, by feel, and until today, apparently that meant super slow. Today was a normal pace, without trying, for 7 miles, which I haven’t done in a few weeks.

Of course when I heard gunshots about halfway through I sped up and saw some paces I definitely hadn’t seen in a while . . . realizing the only orange on me was my shoes. When I got home Mr. Judy said with that many gunshots (there were a lot) it wouldn’t be hunters, and found there was a gun club not far from where I was running. I’ve run there many, many times and this was a first.

Dunno why we all look like we need a bathroom. It’s the only sun we’ve seen in days!

Saturday
I met up with the group again this week and even got to share my run with someone again.

Always peaceful by the river.

Skipped a local 5k because my legs are not up to racing (or maybe they are?) and I’ve heard it was hilly, too. I also taped my hamstrings — talk about awkward! — both Friday & Sat. And my legs feel a whole lot better. I’ve been doing a lot of things for those hamstrings, but why didn’t I think about taping sooner? It seemed to help tremendously.

My lost skirt found. And yes, that’s our wedding picture. We’ve never hung it in the 4 homes we’ve had so far . . .

Favorites of the week
I found the elusive Wonder Wool Skirt today (read about my problems finding it here)! I store off season running clothes in boxes in the closet in my spare bedroom, and turns out it had somehow fallen behind those boxes. Of course I had to drag out every box and completely go through them before I found it.

I’m happy the big blizzard totally missed us. We got rain, but you don’t have to shovel rain and what snow we had left has washed away — which means more places to run. It’s going to remain cold, but let’s hope that the snow stays away a bit longer.

Let’s get the conversation started:

What sort of “encouragements” rub you the wrong way?

Finish your Thanksgiving leftovers (we freeze our leftover turkey, or most of it, I’ve been enjoying some turkey sandwiches after my runs)?

Do you enjoy snowstorms?

  1. So I had a similar situation on at a Tri race last summer. This guy passes me on the bike and says looking good, hang in there. Um thanks. Same race, I had a calf cramp on the run and I was walking. A woman runs by and says looking strong almost there. Yeah so I was not looking strong and was not almost there. I like to hope people mean well but I agree sometimes it feels the opposite

    1. I’ve probably said the same things to people (although I’ve never said slower runner passing, I mean really, that is just hurtful), and yes, I get that people are well meaning.

But sometimes you should think before you speak!

  2. I’m sure the comments come from a good place, but sometimes its just not what you want to hear!

Great river pic! Looks like a lovely place to run.

    1. Usually I agree the comments come from a good place, and we actually had a little conversation, but really, people, think before you speak!

It really is a lovely place to run. Unfortunately it’s also dodgy and there’s been some attacks there, so I only go there with a group.

  3. One guy on a bike once called me Forrest Gump.

13 miles in 2 days. You must be recovered.

I sandwiched my 7 between 2 rest days. I sure was nice to feel the sun. I had forgotten what it was like.

I didn’t cook so no leftovers. No regrets.

I like snow as long as the paths are cleared and I can run. Thank God for UAlbany and the Crossings in that respect.

  4. So glad to read you found your skirt! And I love the colorful tights in the picture. I understand how you feel about patronizing. I think a lot of runners are just socially awkward and don’t know what to say when they pass you. “Hello” is good, in my book! 🙂

  5. I think that sometimes people think that what they say is encouraging but it really is not, lol. I know that they mean well but it’s still super annoying.

I’m glad that the blizzard totally passed you. It’s just not normal to be dealing with blizzards in Fall!

  6. I’m obviously in the minority here, but I never heard a comment like those mentioned and felt patronized, I felt encouraged. Maybe it’s because I started to run so late in life (age 59) and had zero confidence, so when someone calls out a word of encouragement, I didn’t feel patronized, I felt that they were trying to be nice. That’s just me, I get where you are all coming from.

Glad you found that skirt! I don’t know about you but it would have driven me up the walls not to have located it.

    Love your wedding portrait!

  7. I can relate to the well-meaning comments that may not always be interpreted as such. I always try to say “Thank you, Officer” whenever I see a law enforcement person along a race course….and often times (if I’m short of breath) I can’t help wonder if it sounds like I’m saying something else (inappropriate) LOL Glad you found the skirt!

    1. I always thank the officers/volunteers, too. Or try to. Especially in bad weather!

I’m trying to figure out what you think it’s coming across as, but I think I can guess & I’m pretty sure they’re not hearing it that way. 🙂

    1. I’m not really much into family photos, and quite frankly, I just always thought having photos of yourself hanging seemed sorta silly. Or maybe it’s a reaction to my mom, who had photos EVERYWHERE. Of course now she’s gifted me with some, so I have to display them, OTOH, it’s highly unlikely my parents will be back here. 😦

  8. Glad you found your skirt and I love that river photo! I don’t usually say anything except “‘morning” if I pass someone running, and don’t recall anyone saying anything to me. I might say “you’ve got this” in a race, but maybe I should just stfu. 😉

  9. Yeah, I’d rather other runners not comment at all. They don’t know my story. Funny, I’ve never hung up a wedding picture either. The one pic I have on display is so tiny…like 2 x 3 inches. The gunshot thing would unnerve me too. Our new house will be very rural and I worry about stuff like that. I’m glad you were able to run with friends this week! Thanks for linking.

    1. Where I run is decidedly not rural. I’ve never heard gunshots there before!

OTOH where I trained for my trail half is close to a shooting range. I also didn’t know that the first time I heard gunshots there . . .
