Back in the Groove: 12/3 -9 Weekly Wrap

Training Week 1: Best Damn Race Savannah Half

Let’s just say it wasn’t an auspicious start to my training for my next half: I finally felt like I got back into the groove. The taping was helping my hamstrings tremendously, my paces were normal, I had a great run Friday and Saturday last week, and another great run on Monday.

Then Monday evening I felt like I’d been run over by a truck. Thankfully it ended up being just a very run-down feeling, not a real illness (knock on wood!), especially as Mr. Judy was out on the West Coast visiting family Tuesday – Friday — which in some ways actually helped, since I only had to cook to please myself and could watch the movies he doesn’t enjoy.

I took it easy — you’ll notice I ran Monday and then not again until Saturday. It’s early days in training, so better to nip this in the bud with some rest and chicken soup.

I’m joining up with the Weekly Wrap from Holly @ Hohoruns and Wendy @ Taking the Long Way Home to share how I’m listening to my body while starting to train for my next half.

Running Updates

I really thought I was going to get rained on  . . .

Monday
I do wish the weather people could get things right, but I’m so glad I #optedoutside despite potential rain. I was rewarded with a sunny run and no rain and another run that was pretty normal paces without trying to make it so.

. . . but as I ran it got sunnier and sunnier

It’s kind of sad how grateful I am for even an hour of sun because it’s been so lacking here lately!

Most of the Sole Sisters who ran Wineglass showed up — and a few more

Saturday
Some of the best weather we’ve had for Last Run — no snow & ice, thankfully, unlike last year. Winds calm. Chilly, but not terrible. Thanks to Darlene @ MyFirst5k for picking up almost all our bibs! And thanks to Running Buddy S for driving! Because a not favorite of the week was my car battery dying on Thursday.

A good “time” was had by all and I’ll recap it in Tuesday’s post.

Sunday
Several friends were doing the first Winter Series (supported long runs from a local running club). The distances were 3, 5, and 15k — and none of them really jived with what I wanted to do. Not to mention it’s a really boring place to run, so I decided to go out later, because while the paths remain free of snow, there are still better options.

I carbed up at breakfast, a bit too much for 7 miles, and by the time I got out there the sun was on its way down again and it got chillier and chillier but I had a nice strong run.

A few of my favorite things . . .

Favorites of the week
A potluck was planned after our 5k yesterday, with some knitting lessons thrown in. We had at least 4 experienced knitters and then all different levels from a little knitting knowledge to none. While I’ve been knitting on and off for longer than I’ve been married — which is a long time! — it has been off the last few years so I figured I better pick up some needles to figure it out again.

I had trouble teaching, so I just knit. 🙂 Yes, it’s supposed to look loopy like that!

I’ve never tried to teach anyone to knit before, and usually I’m a good teacher, but not so much this time. I tried, and then I just knit.

Lots of chicken noodle soup (farfalle is all I had!)

I was feeling super run down after my run on Monday, so eventually I decided to make a big batch of chicken noodle soup. It seemed to do the trick, I felt better after I had some! And yes, I made it in the Instant Pot.

Miss Lola. Just cause.

I left some towels warming up on my towel warmer before I went to run, with the clothes I planned to change into on top. They were so nice and warm when I put them on!

Congrats to Running Buddy J on her first indoor triathlon today!

Let’s get the conversation started:

Go-to soup when you’re not feeling good?

Do you knit or crochet?

How’s your running going?

  1. Winter Series was only 3m and 15k. It was fun because there were so many familiar faces. I only ran 3 because I ran the night before and prefer if possible not to run 2 days in a row esp if they are races. I’m still not in training mode although my race is before yours.

    1. I wanted more & I didn’t want to get out the door that early, either. Worked for me. I know less runners than you do!

Besides, no doubt there will come a time when that’s the only option for snow-free.

    1. I do know that chicken noodle soup has research behind it. 🙂 Actually, I think it’s just chicken soup, not so much the noodles.

Dunno if it were placebo effect or that I’d already rested enough but it definitely didn’t hurt. 🙂

  2. I have been knitting and crocheting, since my early elementary school days 😉 I’m a much better knitter, though. I think it’s my art geek brain (and ambidexterity) that makes it an easy skill. Now, don’t ask me if I can even turn on a sewing machine…..

    1. Wow, that’s a LONG time knitting/crocheting! My mom knits, but didn’t teach me (I’m self taught). And so not ambidextrous.

I don’t sew. At all. I have to pay someone to hem stuff, and of course everything on me needs to be hemmed!

  3. I recognize a Santa among your Sole Sisters.

I love supported runs, such a great community engagement. NYRR has a few organized ones as do some of the local ones in the lead up to the marathon. There was an especially hot Sunday early in September and it’s just nice to have supplies out there for you.The one I was doing I think the day after you left was a free one by NYRR/New Balance ahead of the Bronx 10 as it was the first double digit race in the city in some months

Glad it wans’t a serious illness — matzoh is my go-to for teeth, colds or really anything. I know how to crochet but don’t do it often

    1. I don’t think we have any supported runs in the summer. The winter ones were started to support runners training for Boston, apparently — there usually aren’t a lot of snow free places to run here in the Winter.

  4. Last Run looks like a lot of fun. I will look forward to reading your recap. And so glad to hear that your run down feeling was just that – not something more serious. Anything that can be fixed with chicken soup is not that bad! 🙂

  5. I’ve been fighting a cold, and the cold is winning tonight. Luckily I took a few minutes to throw the makings for my curried tomato-lentil soup in the crock pot yesterday. And, my friend who hosted our cookie baking had made Italian wedding soup from scratch – it really hit the spot! I’d love to do a knitting party!

    1. Your soup sounds yummy! I bet that’s hitting the spot.

We have several knitters in the group, including one woman who actually used to own a yarn store, and then some who wanted to learn. I’m not so sure anyone really learned anything but we all had fun.

  6. I wish I knew how to knit or sew or anything like that-so not in my wheelhouse at all! I am going to make my fave white bean and kale soup tomorrow it’s been so cold that is what I am craving now.Your race looks fun and festive!

  7. I can’t knit or crochet! I have tried so hard with knitting but no. So I stick to cross-stitch and making curtains and bunting, though have done neither for a while. Running is going OK as I’m gong to hit my target for the year later today … Glad the snow and ice is holding off for you so far.

      1. I hope so – someone said on my post in the running club group about it today what’s the plan, rest? and I was like, um, no. But I expect I’ll have to make it a nice round number …

  8. I think it’d be fun to knit. I’m positive you could teach me! 😉 I’m glad your body was able to fight off the illness and you could participate in the festive 5k with your friends. It looks fun! Miss Lola is always so pretty. Thanks for linking!

  9. i love that photo with all of your Sole Sisters. There’s a lot of holiday spirit in that pic!

I would love to learn how to knit. One of my weekend running buddies knows how to knit and she said she would teach me. I need to take her up on that offer.

  10. It sounds like you had a lot of fun with your friends at the race! I love the red leggings with the reindeer on them.

I do not knit, but I used to crochet years ago (only very basic stuff, though). I’m a very good seamstress, but no longer enjoy the process.

  11. My go to soup is either chicken noodle for tomato soup. If it’s a harsh winter day, I’ll make soup and grilled cheese for lunch. It’s one of those really good combos on days like that.

  12. I learned finger knitting in elementary school. Not sure it’s even a real thing. I can sew on a button if I have to but that’s about it. Glad you backed off when you weren’t feeling great. Yes, chicken soup for the win.

    1. Yes, I can sew on a button but hate doing it — and that’s about it for me, too.

But I’ve knit, I’ve crocheted, cross stitch, embroidery, quilt, paint . . . all self taught (before the internet!).

  13. Usually when sick I like hot and sour soup with lots of veggies…though not so great for sore throats, for obvious reasons. Potato soup for the “don’t feel like eating anything” kind of sick.
