Training Week 5: Best Damn Race Savannah Half

The new stuff is down in favorites, although I did end up running on unpaved paths/non technical trails a couple of times this week. The snow is still bypassing us, so you have to take advantage of that!

Running Updates

Tuesday
Even though I was bummed this race was canceled last year, I also enjoyed staying cozy at home. This year I braved the crazy winds with several friends. Read more about that next Tuesday.

I don’t come here a lot, but it’s so peaceful when I do

Wednesday
Finally! Some sun! A colder day than yesterday, but no wind so it felt much better. Headed out for a unpaved/trailish run, with no thoughts but recovery on my mind. This run was great — no doubt due to recharging my solar batteries!

Friday
Finally a Friday with decent weather. I went to the upper end of the bike path, to shake things up a bit, and was glad to see that only one of the short tunnels under the overpasses had ice in it — with our back & forth weather you never know. My butt was feeling yesterday’s Pilates, but it was another good, strong run.

I threw in some strides mid run, which combined with the slight downhill made it a speedy mile, but surprisingly the last mile was my fastest.

That’s a hiking boot. Hanging in off a tree. With twigs & lichen. WTF?

Sunday
We met up at a path further north, and the day couldn’t decide what to do: rain, sleet, or let the sun come out — all day. I started with someone else later than the main group, since I’d done my long run on Friday, but I turned back the other way after a mile because the path was icy and finished up alone. It did allow me to run my own pace, though.

Favorites of the week
We tried out a Japanese crepe restaurant that opened relatively recently. It has both savory and sweet crepes, and the combinations are interesting. I had a shrimp avocado crepe and a banana chocolate mini crepe.

They were good! The restaurant was quite busy, though, and there aren’t really enough cooks to handle that many people. So service, while good, was slow.

Are you in the snow belt? I am glad we aren’t, for once! But still missing the sun . . .

      1. They’re still very good, but the fillings are very different from a french crepe, and the crepe itself is made with rice flour – which actually makes it gluten free — I’d say they’re slightly crispier than a french crepe.

        I have a feeling we’ll be back, but then again, it’s very close to us.

    1. I didn’t even realize that they were Japanese crepes when my husband first mentioned them.

      The crepes themselves are a bit different, and the fillings are definitely different — but for the most part, aside from the desserts, healthier, too, I think.

  1. I’ve never heard of Japanese crepes, but they sure look good! Utah has been pretty rough these past few days. Freezing temps and lots of snow make for some rather poor running. Glad you’ve had some nice weather! Enjoy the sun for me! 🙂

    1. Well, we really don’t get much sun here at all. 😦 But we still have clear streets/paths, although we might get a little snow tonight — which is supposed to be washed away by rain. AGAIN!

    1. It was really good. Unfortunately the $$ add up quickly, but then again, we had a coupon so this time didn’t cost too much. I’m pretty sure we’ll be back, and I was actually not really interested in it — I was pleasantly surprised by some healthy options.

    1. The fillings are very different from French crepes, and the crepes themselves are made from rice flour, so gluten free (which is a nice bonus) & I’d say crisper than a French crepe.

      The idea is the same, but overall it’s also quite different.

  2. We had a Japanese crepe place that opened near here recently too. I really liked it, they had some interesting flavor combinations. The hiking boot hanging off the tree is definitely a strange sight!

  3. so I have a question and maybe it’s just a language thing – as in I only know the terms that people use here for running so when I hear people talk about “strides” – what exactly do you mean? It could be my brain is just too Dutch at times now but I never ran in the States before I left.

    never heard of japanese crepes! is it a real thing? do they do that in Japan! what you had sure does sound delicious though!!

    we are not generally a snowy country at all. every few years we get hit and then the entire country shuts down. I remember one year about 10 years ago now I think… it started snowing pretty hard in the morning and was non-stop. it was so bad that we were advised to go home for the day because of trains, etc. So we all pile in our shuttle bus from the roasting plant (I worked at Starbucks in Amsterdam) to the train station, a ride that usually takes 10 minutes, 12-14 in bad traffic. IT TOOK TWO HOURS. Then, though I was able to get on a train, it took about 40 min just to go one stop. then we all had to get out and WAIT. I left at noon and finally arrived home at 10pm. I saw people having absolute meltdowns in the train station and also in the trains once we finally got one that was going somewhere. let me tell you, I am SO GLAD there is no snow here right now!! (luckily I work very close to home now and could walk if I have to).

    1. OMG, that’s horrible about the snow & how long it took to get home. But that’s what happens when it falls someplace that isn’t used to it. 😦 We’re used to it & usually the town does a good job on the roads (but not always).

      Strides are simply picking up the pace for a very brief amount of time (like 30 seconds, recovering for a brief amount of time, then doing it all over again. It’s sort of like speed intervals but a lot shorter. Some people call it pick ups due to the whole picking up the pace thing.

  4. Oooh! Those crepes sound yummy! I haven’t had a crepe in AGES!

    Absolutely not in the snow belt, since we are in Florida. It does get cold and icy a few days a year, but I think we are heading back towards spring and summer temperatures.

    Can’t wait to read about your race!

  5. I’ve had French crepes, but not Japanese. The sweet and savory options sound delicious. The hiking boot must have been in the tree for a long time? The sun finally popped out this weekend after about two weeks of rain and gloom. Boy, did I need that! Thanks for linking.
