Shoveling as Fasted Cardio: 1/14-20 Weekly Wrap

Training Week 7: Best Damn Race Savannah Half

Alas I think that was our last week with no snow on the paths — mostly, anyway, as I ran through just a little snow on Friday (yup, we got caught in the big snowstorm today). Maybe we’ll get lucky and it’ll warm up and melt the foot or so of snow forecast to drop on us today? Unlikely.

I’m joining up with the Weekly Wrap from Holly @ Hohoruns and Wendy @ Taking the Long Way Home to wrap up dodging the snow as best as I can.

Running Updates

Monday
I probably could’ve done this one outside, despite just a tiny dusting of snow — not so much on the road, but on houses, etc. — mostly, it was just that I’ve had super cold runs up to here! Honestly, it was a pretty nice, although cold, day.

Anyhoo, took to the mill for 4 miles easy and trying out my new kicks (Mizuno Wave Sky).

That break in the ice is about where those mysterious foot prints were a few weeks ago

Wednesday
My legs just weren’t having it. I was on the strugglebus from the moment I tried to pick up the pace, with each tempo mile getting progressively slower and maybe a bit more walking in the middle.

There are all sorts of reasons, the chief one probably being a night of very little sleep (no idea why, darn menopause). I tried hard not to beat myself up too much, I found the good in this run — like still no snow on the ground (which will change soon), the fact that I can run, yadda yadda.

Then I got home, and looked at some of last year’s tempo runs . . . where I struggled with pace . . . at about the same paces. Okey dokey then, I guess it wasn’t as bad as I thought (but it did feel as bad!).

If I’d known it was clear here, I would’ve gone this way in the first place!

Friday
The snow was gently falling . . . an inch maybe less on the path . . . there I was, running along, thinking how peaceful it was . . . and suddenly I hit a patch of ice hidden by the snow and went sliding . . . thankfully remained upright. I had on my screw shoes but they’re not much good on ice.

I turned around, walking, and hit another patch of ice, but again, thankfully, remained upright. Had I started out the other way, the path had actually been cleared (usually it was cleared where I started out running) — when I got to the clear part I was able to pick up the pace again, toward the end of the run. Otherwise it was a super slow run so it took me much longer than normal.

I have two more long runs before I taper and wrap things up — but of course the snow is blowing in Sunday. It’s gonna be interesting.

Everyone said it wasn’t that bad. I still thought it was darn cold & was thankful it was only 4 miles for me!

Saturday
Brrr! Glad I only had 4 recovery miles today, it was definitely another cold day. Except for the last half mile I did get to run with friends, which is always nice.

On my left arm my Garmin, unpictured on the right arm is a Momentum Sparklet

Darlene and I were twinning (except for the color), and all three Skirt Sports Ambassadors chose the Toasty Cheeks skirt to brave the cold — it does help keep your butt warm! Use Code 522CRJ for 15% off.

New kicks: Mizuno Wave Sky

Favorites of the week
I’m not sure that the Mizuno Wave Sky is actually a favorite. I really like how light it feels for a somewhat heavy shoe; what I don’t like is that big, built up heel. I like minimalist shoes for my speedwork/long runs and “regular” shoes for easy runs. They are very comfortable, but they run a bit short and I went up a half size — which makes them just a teensy bit large. They’ll be fine for short, easy runs.

Still purring

Ok, he’s actually having an off day today; it happens once in a while. But just a few days ago he actually laid down and purred during his fluids (hasn’t happened since, of course, he’s a cat & he’s good at it).

This was fairly early this morning. There’s been more.

Of course the big snow storm was not a favorite. I’m at peak in my training, but at least it looks like I should be able to get a long run in next weekend (knocking on wood). I had to go out at about 6:30 this morning to shovel just so the dogs could get out! And have already had to shovel a few more times for them.

Let’s get the conversation started:

Are you now buried in snow?

Do you you like being buried in snow (me, definitely no)?

Are you a fan of recovery runs?
I never have been, but I actually do think it was helpful this week.

  1. We’re not buried in snow but we had a tornado hit just a few miles north of us yesterday. Lots of damage, unfortunately. I love the color of your Mizunos. I haven’t tried that model but the built up heel on my Inspires is exactly what my high arches need. I hope your weather moderates this week! Thanks for linking.

  2. Same weather as you but the hubby uses the snowblower.

I like to rest the legs after a long run. Of course unless there is a race scheduled like last week and next week lol. But I only run 3 miles if it’s not a long run. So far my legs are happy.

This week is going to tough getting any runs in. But next Saturday looks good. Grateful that the weekends have cooperated for winter training.

    1. Lloyd uses the snow blower too, but he just finished — the dogs would have exploded by now. Bandit may have been able to push his way through but Lola wouldn’t have been able to. You do what you gotta do.

Yes, next weekend looks good. But really cold again on Sat. Not sue I’ll run Sat but haven’t decided yet obviously too early!

  3. Oh boy, look at all of that snow! I saw on the news that upstate New York was hit hard. Hopefully the temps will warm up later in the week. Luckily we didn’t get the predicted amount of snow, just lots of rain, but that will turn to ice tomorrow.

I love the Skirt Sports winter hat that you’re wearing – it looks so warm!

    1. Yeah, we got dumped on good, but thankfully it’s just one storm. It IS supposed to warm up after Tuesday, but that pesky wintry mix moves in.

The Skirt Sports hat is warm. And I was wearing a second hat under it . . .

  4. For a first snowfall, we’re sort of “buried,” but in the grand scheme of winter…we haven’t really seen much yet. I love recovery runs, even the day following an especially long or tough run. For me, they help loosen up some of the tightness. I keep mine really short (usually two miles) and very easy-paced.

  5. Are you now buried in snow? We got no snow in Wisconsin.

Do you you like being buried in snow (me, definitely no)? I am not a fan of snow, no I don’t.

Are you a fan of recovery runs? Yes I am. I know my body requires them.

  6. I enjoy shovel snow once or twice, but then it gets old! Our snow last week was easy to shovel, but we did it too early and had to do it again. I love those snowy landscapes!

    1. Shoveling once or twice is not that bad. I had to do it 3 times yesterday, but that’s just so the dogs could reach some shelter! It’s our first really shove-able snow of the winter, so I can’t really complain. Yet. 🙂

  7. I am definitely not buried in snow and have only been a couple times in my life – the last being the snowpocalypse of 2010 when we lived in Maryland and were hit by back to back blizzards. UGH. I went a little stir crazy. There was no running.

I do like recovery runs – mostly. Sometimes I don’t. Sometimes I prefer a recovery walk. Depends on how the previous day’s long run went.

I’m so glad you didn’t fall either of those times!! That’s seriously my biggest fear during winter runs.

I have the Toasty Tights but definitely need to invest in the Toasty Skirt. 🙂

    1. I’m usually way more cautious than most of my friends. I seriously wasn’t expecting there to be ice there, it was just some light snow but the joke was on me.

The Toasty Skirt protects your assets. 🙂

I have lived most of my life in upstate NY, and 7 years in VT — I am not a cold or snow lover and I have seen more of both than I ever wanted to!

    1. The only thing that was sore was my elbow — better today, and I’m sure it’ll be fine by tomorrow. It was light fluffy snow at first (later it was heavier, as we got that sleet in between snows).

My mom, who is about 90 miles south of us said they got 2″. We got over a foot. But we’re prepared for & used to that.

  8. Toasty Cheeks is the best name. Could have used one like that today — only part really cold was just below coat. oddly, most padded.
It’s all going to ice tomorrow here and then be a mess Wednesday when it’s near 50 again
Glad you were OK On the ice

  9. Wow – we haven’t had that big a snowstorm all winter (extremely unusual for here). Hoping we get some actual winter before it’s all over!

I’m not much of a fan of recovery runs – I’d rather do something less strenuous for recovery, but I admit they do help sometimes.

    1. We hadn’t had a big snowstorm yet either. Well, now we have. 🙂 I personally would be totally happy with a snow-free winter but I guess that ship has sailed!

I like yoga for recovery, but sometimes a run does work pretty good, too.

  10. That icy run on Friday sounds scary! Glad there were no actual falls. We had snow last weekend while we were in Florida so we were able to avoid it. And the snow this weekend pretty much missed us so we got lucky.

    1. Definitely nice to miss the snow! 2 of our running friends were also in FL during the storm. Well, actually 4 — 2 go for the winter.

The 2 are coming home today though. Still darn cold. It’ll be a shock!

  11. Yes, buried in snow and it’s gonna hang around awhile since we’ll be sub-z at least through the weekend. I sure wish I didn’t have my 3 biggest weeks of marathon training ahead of me. Oh well. To the mill I go!

  12. Love that kitty!

Not buried in snow, although I don’t think I would mind. If it’s going to be this cold, we might as well have something to show for it.

I don’t want to promise, but I’ve been making some adjustments to my calendar and it looks like I might be coming up to BDR Savannah after all! Would love to meet up if I do!

    1. I wish I could send you our snow. 🙂

That would be totally awesome to meet you in Savannah! I get about not knowing — heck, with the stuff going on in my life I won’t be sure til the last minute probably — but if we’re both there we should definitely meet up!

  13. See, when the chances of falling on the ice are much higher, that’s when I really hate running outside. And I don’t like unclear paths. I mean, I’m accident prone (I still have a huge bruise on my elbow from falling on Christmas and then consequently somehow every week hitting my elbow in the same d*#m spot); I just don’t like taking a risk that there will be more injuries in my life (isn’t one at a time enough?). Glad you stayed upright!!!

It’s snowing here at the moment – the first snow – and I have training tonight. Trying to be thankful for the run, etc., but I’m not excited about it. I now totally understand why I used to train on the treadmill in the winter. Since joining a training group that no longer happens. And my trainer says “no matter the weather” so …

I think I love recovery runs too much to be honest and would mostly rather do that than train. BUT… speed won’t be broken this year if I don’t train…

    1. I’ll be running on the treadmill again today cause while our roads are cleared, in our neighborhood that not cleared all that great — and there are no sidewalks, so I just feel that can be dangerous.

      Ouch on the elbow!

It can definitely be hard to get excited about runs in bad weather — I’m a work in progress myself there. Always trying to find something to be grateful for on the run.

  14. OH look at Gizmo with his arms folded – bless! Morgan scared us with a weird cough for a few days, then there was a hairball in the hall and he’s much better. Phew. And no snow here but it’s freezing. I had one of those slow icy runs the other week, so scary. Gald you didn’t slide right over! And will be catching up with this week’s runs very soon (sooo behind!)
