Snow, Ice & Cold, Oh My!: 1/21-27 Weekly Wrap

Training Week 7: Best Damn Race Savannah Half

Snow. Check. Ice. Check. Extreme cold. Check. Pouring rain. Check. Mother Nature sure threw a lot at us this week, but I did my best to keep on keeping on.

I’m joining up with the Weekly Wrap from Holly @ Hohoruns and Wendy @ Taking the Long Way Home to wrap up half and half: half treadmill runs, half running outside.

Running Updates

The good thing about running inside was trying out some different skirts. This one’s Hover.

Monday
-7 in the morning — without the windchill (and there was windchill) — I know some people would still run outside in those temps, but some people bungee jump too.

5 miles on the treadmill, 3 at tempo, and stick a fork in me (as far as running).

Getting some abwork in in between miles. This skirt’s Jette.

Tuesday
While cold, it was sunny and not too windy. I didn’t really want to drive somewhere and the roads in my neighborhood were still too slippery. I did 4 miles on the treadmill, stopping each mile to do some abs.

The last time I did a similar workout it seemed to take forever. This time, while yes it took longer than just running obviously, it felt good — maybe in contrast to how hard yesterday’s tempo felt!

A better shot of the Wonder Wool top. Such bright colors this year!

Friday
Yesterday it poured cats & dogs, then changed over to snow, and this morning the roads just looked a mess. I decided to stay safe and do a shorter run on the treadmill. I made some energy balls I’d been meaning to  try out on a long run (so good!). And then I kept looking at the weather, looking at the road, looking at the weather . . . I decided to go for the long run after all.

It was almost noon by the time I started, so I was running through lunch. Had I decided to do this I definitely would have eaten differently and probably not made those energy balls. Basically I was running in neighborhoods near the park, but not in the park — not exactly exciting, but more exciting than running in my own neighborhood, and the roads in my neighborhood were still quite messy with slush and ice when I left.

I was still cautious and slowed over anything that looked wet, but there was no slippery ice like last week and aside from some tired hamstrings (probably because I didn’t foam roll before or warm up at all) the run was fine.

Sunday
Another cold (but not too bad, except for the wind) supported run/race. It was a tough morning at home, and my heart wasn’t really in it, but I knew I’d be better off running and I also knew that on my own I wouldn’t have pushed it as hard. Not that I really thought I was pushing hard but it was a pretty good pace and nice negative splits.

Peanut Butter Mud Pie — the waitress split it in half unasked!

Favorites of the week
This pie. It’s made multiple appearances on this blog, usually after a double digit run, and it never disappoints.

Seat warmers. Not on my car, obviously, which is almost 19 years old, but the ones in my husband’s car. I swear I wanted to ask him to just drive around some more on the way home from the restaurant so I could just luxuriate in the warmth. I may have actually asked that out loud . . .

I you liked some of the Skirt Sports I’m sporting here, feel free to ask about it and/or use my discount code 522CRJ for 15% off.

Let’s get the conversation started:

Do you have an amazing dessert that you love and therefore never try the other desserts at the restaurant — even though they look pretty awesome too?

If you do run on the treadmill, do you mix things up on it?

Do you have a different fitness routine during winter?

  1. Hope you felt better after the race. I never negative split on that course. I’m sure I didn’t today either. I wasn’t feeling great but after looking at this weeks weather forecast I’m glad I went.

  2. I have a few things on my must-have list for my next car (whenever that happens) and heated seats are on top of the list. Every winter I am thankful for them. When i hurt my back a few weeks ago, I was also grateful for the heat!

Congrats on the race! That pie looks like it would hit the spot.

    1. That pie always hits the spot, 🙂

It wasn’t my best time for that “race” — although it was a good time. And exactly the same time (to the second) as five years ago. Go figure. Although apparently I did another 3 miler in that series five years ago that was a minute faster.

  3. I pretty much keep my same schedule all year around but add outdoor biking and swimming in the summer. So actually not the same haha. I do like that blue wonder wool top on you. I need to dig mine out. I rarely treat myself to pie but that one looks like it is worth it. I tend to want more of a pizza or burrito type food post loge run. Seat warmers are the best!

  4. I agree – some runners don’t mind the sub zero temps. I’ve run outside in a real feel of zero before but I think that would be my absolute limit (it was tough)! Once the weatherman said you can get frostbite on an exposed area of skin after 20 mins, I knew I would be spending my Monday morning with my treadmill, lol.

Oh man, that peanut butter mud pie looks divine! Yum!!

    1. I can do single digits if it’s sunny & not windy. Ditto teens (although I have sometimes done them when it’s not sunny & is windy).

I think a lot of it depends on just how much treadmill running or how many cold runs I’ve done!

  5. I so wish I had a treadmill so I could get runs in when the weather is too bad to actually run outside! And, I could always get one but …. there’s really no room in my house. I have no idea where I’d put it!! Maybe one day we’ll insulate and make the garage temperature controlled and I can have it out there.

That wonderwool top is really cute. I don’t have any of those yet either. I really need to up my Skirt Sports game. lol

That pie looks divine. I usually go for the creme brûlée but, if I were to see blueberry pie on a menu, I would probably run back to the kitchen to grab a whole pie before anyone could order a slice. lol

  6. Ahhh, the treadmill 😉 My last four runs have all been courtesy of Milly, and they have been manageable. I have to make them progressive (usually 1/2-mile speed increases), but then when I get to that final 1/2 or 1-mile cool-down, UGH…it feels so slow. But, I am getting them done without much complaining (which really surprises me). Yes to the heated seats!!! They feel good on the drive home from work, after my car has been sitting outside for several hours.

  7. All this crazy weather has me mixed up too. I should just move in with my gym’s treadmills at this point. The pie looks great! I’m not a dessert person usually, but I love banana wontons anytime they are on the menu.

  8. I love my No-Sugar Added Vanilla Klondike bars so much, I rarely get dessert when we go out and have one when we get home. I could be tempted by a good apple pie, or a chocolate volcano cake if I really want to indulge …..

Now I forgot what else I was going to say. 😉

    1. mmmm, chocolate volcano cake . . . yeah, that would make me forget things too!

I don’t get dessert real often. Or maybe I actually do get it too often, I got chocolate truffles the week before . . . .

  9. That’s a great idea on breaking up the treadmill run by doing ab work every mile! I’ll have to keep that in mind for the future. Given how the Winter has been going this year, I foresee a lot of indoor workouts.

  10. Great job navigating a tough weather week! The Wonder Wool top looks great on you. At least you are getting good use of it right now. And, the pie looks deliciously sinful. Thanks for linking!

  11. the weather really has everyone’s regular schedules whacked!! Still you got things done and did what you could and that’s what matters.

I am oddly not really a dessert person, though i do love pie 🙂 and cake 🙂 but if I go out to eat I’m more of the appetizer type. That said, if there’s chocolate in it, I’m ordering it 😀

Since I still refuse to use the treadmill (though seriously considered it last week) I can’t say I mix anything up with it.

I don’t really have a different routine, though I did add kettlebells at the beginning of the month as something different. I will also be going to pilates soon so that’s different too. Never too late to change things up 🙂

    1. What’s wrong with appetizer & dessert? Well, actually, I don’t usually get dessert when I go out, but when I get up towards my peak of training I do like to treat myself & dessert is definitely my thing. 🙂

      Love kettlebells!

  12. mm peanut butter pie. Did you ever have an Uno’s in the various places you lived? I miss them and their peanut butter pie
I’m not necessarily a dessert person, but a freally good one will tempt me
    I ❤ the Jette pattern

  13. That pie looks amazing!

I do run outside in negative single digits, but only ~30 minutes. I’m afraid of getting frostbite on my nose, because it’s not comfortable to keep it covered up.

  14. I think if I were on death row and had a “last meal” PB Mud Pie would be part of it. Typically winter is the time of my runbattical, but as you know this year is different. When Tokyo and London call, one must answer.

    1. Most of the time I don’t train through winter either, but obviously this year I am. The payoff will be escaping the frozen tundra — I know the south can get cold, but I’m staying positive that we’ll enjoy that southern sunshine.
