Slow & Steady Does It: 3/25-31 WRD

Some days I felt pretty good, some days I felt a bit eh, so I am still taking it easy. No reason not too.

Running Updates

I wore trail shoes assuming there’s still be icy patches — there weren’t

Monday
Last week was the start of the Freihofers Training Challenge (yes, you have one more day to sign up hereif you’re local!), but I wasn’t up to attending. Today I got out there early and ran .75 miles, took a break for some photos, then ran back .75 miles — no walk breaks. Don’t ask me why.

Then another 1.34 with the group, very easy, mostly walking, although I did run between people to make sure everyone was okay.

Lola getting in on the photoshoot

Friday
A really nasty, rainy, raw day. Feeling kind of eh (still kind of back & forth with it), but did 2 easy miles on the mill. Again with no walk breaks. Again don’t ask me why.

Through the covered bridge and up the hill every week

Saturday
Feeling better this morning, and especially happy that the forecast rain was taken out of the forecast — and it did stay dry. Back mentoring and many of my friends were there this week. Did roughly a mile of mostly walking (they’re on 20 minutes of 90 seconds run, 2 minutes walk, so not a whole lot of running yet).

Ran with one friend afterwards for a couple of miles (no walk breaks) and called it good.

Falling apart Chuck Roast courtesy of my InstantPot and Butcher Box

Favorites of the week
Did you see my post on Instagram about our first try from Butcherbox? (You’re following me here, right?). Mr. Judy was salivating over all that meat when it arrived — we don’t eat a lot of beef, generally (they also have chicken and pork). I did the chuck roast in my InstantPot and it came out great.

I’ll write a review of Butcherbox when we’ve tried a few more things (read: in a couple of months, probably!). Right now all you need to know that it’s humanely raised, grass fed, and comes in a cardboard box — no Styrofoam at all (but obviously dry ice).

If you use my link here, I might get something (we’re not exactly sure what). The roast was great — that’s all we’ve tried so far (there were also some filets, sirloin tips, ground beef, and a couple of hanger steaks).

Got in three runs this week! I think the 5 mile race I was considering is probably not gonna happen next week. I don’t think any of my friends are doing it, and while I’d worked back up to 5 miles, that was before I got sick. There will be other races.

Saw the first bulbs coming up this week while walking the dogs — Spring will come up here — eventually.

Talk to me:

Are you big meat eaters?

What sort of subscription boxes do you get?

If you’re in training-mode, how’s it going?

  1. Glad you’re starting to feel better. I love that covered bridge
Not a big meat eater and even less of a cook, but that looks juicy!
Love your skirt in the Lola photo bomb

    1. I’m not a super big meat eater either, but some people in my family are. And I get tired of cooking two meals.

I actually do enjoy meat, but for ethical and health reasons, I don’t think it’s a great idea to eat a lot of it.

      1. I just watched an SVU episode that would have turned me off beef if I were a fan, but never liked the taste. Chicken is too dry for me unless it’s crock pot. I do fish which has its own ethical issues

      2. I love fish and I love vegetarian food. Chicken in the Instant Pot is amazing. Seriously. So easy.

I never liked beer either. I don’t drink at all, but when I did, it was never beer.

  2. I get an organic veggie and fruit box each week. Some weeks I struggle to use it all bc my hubs is a total carnivore. Running because you want to and not because you have to = happiness thanks for linking up

  3. Love the covered bridge: we might have fords here but we do not have those! And well done on your sensible work. I was doing maintenance runs to keep turning over with a big one coming up tomorrow. Feeling OK about my mara training at the moment and tamping down the scared feelings about the ultra!

Oh and I’m not a big meat eater, more fish for me really.

      1. Sounds like you have a really good base for your marathon already. Can’t speak to an ultra (of course can’t really speak to a marathon, either!).

How I wish I had someone my pace to train with for a marathon — someday, maybe, not right now. It would make a huge difference.

  4. You are in a great place, Judy. I know your running has been on the conservative side, but you’re running on your own terms (and I’d bet a lot of your base is still there, even if you haven’t had “training” mileage recently). It’s nice getting to run simply because you can…whether you have any special races on the roster or not. That roast…I was almost salivating when I saw it on Insta a few days ago.

  5. Always training for something. I love to race.

I am planning on the Delmar Dash. It’s a race I’ve already done.

Not a fan of any subscriptions.

I do like meat. Some weeks I eat it and some not. But the hubby is a meat lover. We eat at Delmonicos every Sat night.

I was hoping to see you Sunday. Maybe in a few weeks.

Glad to hear you are feeling better. If only the weather would warm. I froze today at another race.

  6. You know you don’t have to race it. You can run it for fun. I’m sure you have the base to run 5.If not, I’m sure our paths will cross at some point.

  7. This weather has really sapped my motivation! I hope for all of us that things improve soon.

We have access to so much good meat here that I’m pretty sure we wouldn’t do Butcher Box! I’m glad to hear that you liked it!

    1. I am with you on needing some spring weather. It IS coming (but not today, sadly, I wish I could hole up at home but am mentoring today — in 19 mph winds).

I’ll bet Chicago has great meat! I haven’t really found a source of grass fed beef I like here (except Trader Joes, but there’s only a couple of cuts there).

  8. We don’t get any subscription boxes – just haven’t tried them. We do eat meat and I’d say it’s a fair balance of chicken, beef, and fish. I don’t have an Instant Pot yet, but everyone I know who uses one, loves it!

That bridge is lovely. What a great view as you start your runs!

    1. I’ve never done one either. I probably wouldn’t have done this one, but my mistake was telling Mr. Judy about it. 🙂

Absolutely LOVE my Instant Pot! I do see now Ninja has one that’s also an air fryer — that sounds really cool (so you can crisp stuff without putting it back in the oven).

  9. The weather here this week was hot and cold, literally! We just keep alternating between Winter and Spring/Summer, lol.

I’ve heard of ButcherBox but I haven’t tried it out yet – I look forward to your review!

    1. We never really got hot, we got warm. And mostly I’ve had to run in the mornings, which can still be darn chilly!

The nice thing about Butcherbox is you can suspend the subscription for a LONG time, which is what we’ll need to do.

  10. Sounds like you are trying a new running method – no walk breaks. I like to try new running stuff every now and then. I hope you like it.

I was never a big meat-eater, but now I am trying to lower cholesterol through changing diet (I ate a lot of full-fat yogurt and cooked with butter), so I eat no red meat at all – just fish and occasionally chicken breast.

    1. Seriously, not using walk breaks was not a conscious decision. I do like to try stuff, and usually put a lot of thought into it.

Oddly last year I was sick around this time. When I started to run again, I actually had a short bout of runner’s knee because I didn’t alter my intervals.

No problems so far, but then I was beginning to train for a race and now I’m not. Also, I had to take a couple of weeks completely off of running then, and while I haven’t done a whole lot of running, I’ve been able to keep running at least once (mostly a few times) a week.

    1. Funny, I don’t like burgers. Never have. My mom loves them. And we got 4 lbs of ground beef (but I can use it in other ways).

I always embrace the taper, but that’s just my nature. Training is hard work & I’m ready to relax some!

  11. I like to eat meat too but am trying not to eat too much of it. Sometimes what I do is only eat meat on the weekends. So far it has been working out OK.

My training has been so so. I have a 5k in two weeks and a half in a month. Definitely not really ready for my half but will only run it for fun.

  12. Glad you feel better.I see your training is improving with no walk breaks.
I try to not eat meat because I am an animal lover. My training is also improving and I think I am ready to enter some race.

    1. I am actually not training for anything. I am not a fast runner, and I embraced using run/walk intervals a few years ago and those have been great for me — I got faster using them, too (not that I’ll ever be “fast”).

I’m a huge animal lover, too. On my own I wouldn’t eat beef. Unfortunately while my husband loves animals, he sees no problems eating meat. So if he’s going to, I want it to be humanely raised & fed a nature diet.

  13. That covered bridge looks so pretty! So, my daughter is vegan, I am not eating meat for Lent, but my son got a smoker for his birthday. Obviously, our family dietary preferences are all over the map. I’m tempted to check out that butcherbox for my son.

    1. Well, like anything, the bridge is nice, but 10 weeks of running through it & up the hill — yeah, it does get kind of old.

I’m sure your son would enjoy Butcherbox.

It would never work for just me, on my own I don’t eat meat. Left to his own devices, that would be all my husband would eat, probably!

Although he does actually like fish, thank goodness, and he enjoyed the chicken I made on Friday, too.

  14. I think if you take walk breaks or don’t with your running, it’s all running to me 🙂 but I won’t ask you why you didn’t take as many walk breaks 🙂

we eat meat but not a ton. mostly chicken. sometimes salmon. very little to zero pork. I’m really picky about what kind of meat we buy and because I want humanely raised animals on my plate it gets expensive. that chuck roast looks divine. man, it’s been ages since I had anything like that! I love the idea of the Butcherbox. We don’t have any of these type of subscriptions. Ron and i go back and forth on it and it just doesn’t seem like it would work for us right now.

    1. Obviously I’ve used run/walk for a long time. I am totally fine with it. This wasn’t a conscious decision on my part — not sure how long I’ll keep it up.

I’m also very picky about my meat, and that was actually what drew me to Butcherbox — if my husband’s going to eat it, I do want it to be humanely raised!

  15. I’m glad you were beginning to feel better by the weekend! Fingers crossed that the weather gets better too. We had really nice weather on Saturday but it’s back to cold today.

    1. It’s funny, the neighborhood I grew up in had a covered bridge, so I suppose I kind of take them for granted.

The weather continues to be back & forth. Not yet time to put away winter clothing — let’s just leave it at that (although somedays are almost spring-like).

  16. I am not a big meat eater but my husband would eat it 24/7 if I let him. He’s in charge of buying what he wants so no subscription boxes here. The wind chills here are still in the teens, which makes running pretty darn cold. I’m losing my patience with it. It’s April after all.

    1. It’s not terribly warm here, either. Most of the time. And since I’m one of the mentors again, I have to show up. Yesterday looked beautiful but ti was damn cold.

OTOH, I’m just running short easy runs! I feel for you.

  17. I eat almost no meat – I pretty much stopped cooking it the first time I lived by myself, and never felt a need to start eating more again. I’ve looked into something similar to butcher box that’s from a local ranch, but I think it would’ve literally taken us more than a year to get through their smallest box!
