Nice weather racing: 4/1-7 WRD

I’m still not running a whole lot, but so far, knock on wood, it’s going fairly well. Of course I typed this sentence the day before my 5 mile race — I may sing a different tune after that (cause it’s been a month since I’ve run that far, even easy, much less racing).

Running Updates

Don’t let the bright blue skies fool you — it was seriously cold this day!

Monday
Still riding the no walk runs — still short runs — this one was surprisingly speedy (for me). Weird.

Then another 1+ miles with the group, still not a whole lot of running but they’re up to 3 minutes running for part of it.

Wednesday
Finally a beautiful day — too bad I totally forgot my phone (as in left it at home) so sadly no photos to share. I headed up to the trail by the river, the really short one, but I was only looking for 3 miles.

For the first time in a really long time, I was overdressed, and although my plan is still to just run without walking and see where it takes me, I had to stop after 1 mile because I was broiling. I took off my jacket and wrapped it around my waist.

3 miles seemed like such a long way. The last mile . . . I was dragging. I had initially thought about putting in some strides but quickly nixed that idea. It’s been almost a month since I’ve actually run three miles! I was very surprised when I looked at my splits later to see that it was my fastest mile.

I didn’t actually have big dreams for this race — just to finish!

Sunday
I stalked the weather and finally signed up for a 5 mile race on the last day of online registration — weather looked great for running — and it was! I’ll recap it on Tuesday, but met up with Darlene and got my free massage. In an odd twist of fate, both Darlene & I had the same massage student. We were wearing the same Skirt Sports print, although I was in capris and she was in a skirt — the woman thought I had come back for a second massage (hello, did she notice all the gray hair?).

Mr. Judy captured Bandit waiting for me while I was out racing

Favorites of the week
Second try from Butcherbox will be Flat Iron Steak tonight; I’ll let you know how it turns out. This time Mr. Judy will grill it (on a rare nice day). If you use my link here, I might get something (we’re not exactly sure what).

In another weird twist of fate I briefly ran into Running Buddy J (who just got back from FL last weekend) when we went out to dinner. We were seated in booths with our backs to each other, but I could hear her talking and realized that was her so we said a brief hello (she was with friends, so I didn’t want to intrude).

You know what wasn’t a favorite? The snow/sleet we got on Friday. Thankfully it had melted by the next day. And the fact that my phone refused to turn on after the race, but would come on when plugged into the charger when I got home — showing 100% battery. It will only stay on when plugged in at the moment, although I still have some debugging to do. It might need a new battery. Always something.

Talk to me:

Any synchronicity going on in your world this week?

Is there a race you do that always seems to have bad weather?

If you’re in training-mode, how’s it going?

  1. i’d say that you did pretty well without training. Did you walk at all?

I do love a flat course which is why I love this race. But it always seems to be while I am training for a longer race so I can’t really go for a PR. Yes, I ran more miles after – 4 not the 5 I planned.

    1. Running has been surprisingly going well. Maybe because I’m not doing much of it, LOL.

I did walk. I actually remembered my water this year, so I walked three times when I had some. I’m a thirsty runner, even when well hydrated.

    1. I don’t think there’s any problem with taking walk breaks. I didn’t really decide not to this year, and I may very well go back to them. For now I’m just running.

And of course we’re all eager to hear about your race!

  2. It’s warmish here right now but the forecast calls for the S-word on Wednesday. I swear spring is never coming.

I’ve had some synchronistic events this week but of course, I can’t remember them. I just remember thinking–well, that’s an interesting coincidence!

    1. Well we all know I have plenty of senior moments.

Snow is not in the forecast, but I don’t think Friday’s snow was actually originally in the forecast either. But it’s supposed to cool off again. OTOH, bulb foliage and budding leaves are beginning to appear!

  3. I love the runs when the mile I feel junkiest actually turns out to be pretty decent. I take it as a sign of fitness 🙂 How funny that the woman thought you had come back for a second massage – that’s definitely something I’ve wished I could do haha
I had a very serendipitous elevator ride on the way to the marathon this weekend – a couple heading to the race got on the elevator as I was leaving, we chatted and they ended up offering me a ride to the race! Sometimes the world and timing lines up pretty nicely!

  4. That’s so crazy the masseuse recognized the SS pattern! What are the chances?? It got up to 66 here today which is by far the nicest it’s been in a looong time. That said, it’s rainy. But still I’m happy to have it finally above freezing, even though it won’t last.

    1. It was 66 here too. No rain — tomorrow it’ll rain. And be cooler. And I have to go out for the challenge group unless there’s thunder (which is actually predicted). Hoping the prediction is right, frankly!

  5. That is funny that the massage therapist mixed you 2 up! You look nothing alike. Fun that you 2 got to meet up again for a race. Interested to see how it went for you! Thanks for linking up

  6. That’s funny about the massage! Reminds me of when I run with a new person, I sometimes don’t even recognize them when we meet somewhere later because you never get to see their face from the front! I would remember their shoes though, and their voice 🙂

  7. There’s a race I don’t do because the weather is so dicey — although it was nice this year (Shamrock Half in Va Beach). I hate phone battery issues. Mine isn’t even 2 years old but seems to be draining faster than it should. Interesting on the straight running. I don’t like run/walk because I have a hard time getting going again. Even at Orange Theory I cut the walking breaks short.

    1. This was sudden — it was working & then it wasn’t. I’ve only had the phone a bit over a year but it was refurbished so who knows? After lots of time debugging yesterday pretty sure it’s the battery. I can only use it if it’s plugged in right now.

I have no problems walking. Mentally or physically. I just like to play around with things, although it was just odd that initially it wasn’t a conscious decision.

    2. Forgot to say that originally I thought I’d do the Shamrock half for VA. But it’s hard to choose, there’s so many great half’s in VA! Still considering Richmond but I don’t think it’s going to happen.

  8. The photo of Bandit waiting for you to come home is precious! He is a loyal companion. 🙂 A race with a free massage afterward is always a huge plus in my book. That sounds like fun. You and Darlene always find such wonderful races! I will be looking forward to reading a recap.

  9. We had similar weather here this week, including hail on Friday as I was on my way to Philly for my Saturday race, lol. It literally came out of no where.

For my race this weekend my goal was to run the whole thing, I didn’t want to take any walk breaks. I always take walk breaks when I run a half/full marathon but for some reason I really just wanted the challenge of running 9.3 miles straight.

    1. I did take walk breaks in my race yesterday. I need to drink water (even if I don’t need to fuel). I’m not sure I’ll ever run a race without some walking & that’s aok for me.

      But goals are always good!

  10. Good work easing back into it. Love the photo of Bandit waiting for you – awwww.

I’m in training mode and it’s going OK so far. I was very pleased to see my clubmates and friends through Manchester marathon yesterday, i’m really excited about supporting London at the end of the month, and then it’s the turn of us lot doing Liverpool RockNRoll! Three more long long runs to do before then but I’m fairly certain I’ve got this. Maybe.

  11. I look forward to hearing about the race! Looks like a good time. I’ve been keeping busy training for RNR Nashville, though the longer runs are getting a lot tougher for me!

  12. I’m glad you had a good race even without really training! isn’t bandit so cute waiting for you? LOVE!

no synchronicity here – but that is funny about the massage student!! who would you say is more grey, you or Darlene? haha! (could be a trick question)
