Water, Baths, & Bees, Oh My!: 6/3-9 WRD

Running went pretty well this week. I enjoyed mostly good weather on the run (despite showers here & there this week) and am loving the warmer days with still low humidity. Especially enjoying that all my runs this week were done in skirt!

Running Updates

The flags go up before Memorial Day and stay up all Summer

Monday
It was a beautiful, crisp . . . Fall day. Mother Nature just can’t make up her mind. “Recovery” week, although everything felt fine after my 5k (probably a signal I could’ve pushed harder), so just an easy run. Still tired, although sleeping a bit better — much better pace than last week, though.

It’s a short trail, but oh-so-pretty

Tuesday
The location and weather? Perfection! The run itself didn’t feel completely easy, nor did it feel completely hard. Overall, though, it was a great run because the location (and good weather) just brought me so much peace.

Thursday
It wasn’t supposed to rain, and it didn’t everywhere, but we had a fair amount of rain during the day. Friends were joining a trail run but I wasn’t feeling it so I hopped on the Treadmill for a couple of miles.

It was a hot one — well, considering the weather had been so cool, up to 67 by the end. But my sunglasses matched my skirt for the coolness factor.

Friday
With plans for Saturday, I wanted to get a longish run in and it was just a beautiful day. We still got a lot of rain this week, but the weather was great for most of my runs. I ran down past the High School, which is a really nice downhill . . . and of course a pretty long uphill on the way back. Still a decent pace. I got much better sleep for most of this week and my runs were the better for it.

Favorites of the week
One of our running friends had a race ask her if she’d do a water stop at her house, since the race goes right by it. She recruited a bunch of running friends to help her out and offered to grill some burgers & chicken for lunch while we all contributed something.

Best stocked water stop ever. Seriously, we actually had too much water (never a bad thing) and way too many people trying to hand out the water (there were less than 300 people in the race). We were begging them “me! me!” but we had lots of fun.

I take staying out of the sun seriously as much as possible, anyway!

Later on we went out to dinner, and were able to bring the dogs since we ate on the patio, and also brought them with us for our first outdoor ice cream this year.

I was feeling Chocolate/PB (and when am I not?)

As I was looking around to find a table, this woman walked over and started talking to me, calling Bandit by name. I couldn’t for the life of me figure out who she was, thinking maybe she was from the rescue that helped us out a bit years ago? Then I saw her daughter and realized it was our neighbor! Mr. Judy also didn’t recognize her when he saw her, so it’s not just me.

The weather was just stunning all weekend long, so the dogs also got a bath this afternoon. Unfortunately one bee  . . . then two . . . then three crashed the party. I did a lot of deep breathing (and Bandit wanted to eat the darn things — no, Bandit, bees are good — just not this close to me!).

Ever set up an aid station?

Do you get to enjoy some nice weather this week?

Are you afraid of anything that stings?

  1. I’ve been having that issue with not knowing who someone is more often lately. I joke that I have early onset dementia, but maybe I shouldn’t joke. Ugh. Getting old is ridiculous!

We did have nice weather albeit a little cooler than I like. But the humidity was low and the mosquitos have been quiet, so there’s that. This upcoming week is supposed to be in the 60s. Kind of strange.

    1. By the way, you won my book giveaway. I remember the last time you won something, you never checked your email. Can you send me your address so I can forward it to the publisher? Thanks.

    2. We’ve been quite warm for much of the week (with Monday being the main exception).

They say if you realize that you’re forgetting stuff, you’re ok. It’s when you don’t even realize you’re forgetting stuff.

Like my mom, who is very proud because she thinks she’s still got a very good memory — she is pretty good considering she’s 91 — but I see definite signs and she doesn’t even see it. Like telling someone that we have dogs & cats, and when I said no, we don’t have cats anymore, she was like WHAT HAPPENED TO GIZMO? Um, yeah, mom, we had to put him to sleep almost half a year ago. 😦

  2. Cute sun hat! It is fun to be on the other side of the water table for a change isn’t it? It is so much more work than people think to keep up and clean up all the cups. Glad you are having better weather. Love the yellow sun glasses too. Have a great week and thanks for linking up

  3. I saw the awesome pic of your volunteer group on Facebook, and I think it’s awesome! I have worked water stands, and have also been a street marshall (?) for a local race that goes by my house. Well, I’ve volunteered at other races, as well, but you get the idea 😉 I’m glad you had some decent weather! The hubby and I have taken Max for evening walks the past few nights, and it’s been just perfect outside. Thanks for joining us on the WRD, Judy!

    1. The weather last weekend really was just perfect. More rain is coming our way, but it’s not a total washout and it’s not too chilly so it’s not that bad.

I thought about an evening walk for the dogs (I’d already walked them yesterday morning), but in the end I had some other stuff I really needed to get done.

  4. That sounds like a fun aid station! I’ve volunteered at races quite a bit, but never at an aid station.

Ugh, stinging things…we’ve had a wasps nest under the eaves the past couple years. No sign of them yet this summer, though, so fingers crossed…

    1. I haven’t actually volunteered a whole lot, but both the races I volunteered at I was at an aid station. The mentoring for the 5k is almost 3 months — I’m happy to be back on my own schedule, but it’s still a great experience!

  5. Your volunteer group rocked! I loved the photos that I saw on IG. I’ve volunteered at NYCM twice – one time I handed out water and the other time I handed out gels. Both were so fun but I did appreciate staying dry when I gave out the gels, lol.

  6. Finally a nice weather week. I don’t think any of my runs got rained out though for the 2nd weekend in a row I skipped my long run.

This week, the weather looks pretty crappy.

What I hate are mosquitos. I’m a magnet for them. Even with bug spray every time I go out, I still get lots of bites.

    1. We don’t have many mosquitos in our neighborhood — so far, anyway. I’m definitely a magnet for them too.

This week doesn’t look like a complete washout, but you have to run around the rain some.

      1. I got bites at Chris’ and on all my runs. We have a lot at my house too. A rainy spring brings them out.

I can only run at a certain day and time. Today’s run is rained out. Hopefully Thurs night is dry.

      2. That’s really odd that you get bites on the run. Mosquitoes don’t like wind.

You would have never survived in TX, cause really, the mosquitoes here (for the most part) are nothing in comparison.

  7. The not recognising people is my life with prosopagnosia. I made sure I told the officials I worked with on Sunday that I won’t recognise them at the next meet – one woman said, all excitedly, “Oh, I’ve heard of that but I’ve never met someone with it!!”. Ah well.

I’m not scared of bees and wasps but my husband has a phobia of wasps which can be really difficult for him. I keep on at him to get hyponotherapy as it completely sorted my emetophobia.

Love the pics and the water station sounds awesome – I bet the racers massively appreciated it!

    1. I’m definitely scared of bees & wasps. Wasps (which is what we usually get on our deck) are just pure evil, since they don’t really seem to serve a purpose and they just keep stinging!

I’ve only spoken with that neighbor a few times, and not in quite a while, I guess it was just that she was out of context. But I’m chatting with her, and all the while just racking my brain trying to figure out who the heck she is — and I have no excuses! But no, I’m not great with names & faces.

  8. isn’t it amazing how being really rested/ getting enough sleep can make a much better run? this is why most of us in Europe (generalising, I’m sure) do the long run on Sunday. And why races are on Sunday and not at the crack before dawn.

you know, I LOVE the sun, but I’m also the very pale person sitting in the shade with SPF50 on? So add a hat on me and we’d be twins. Ice cream and everything 🙂

Last week I was at our Food Hall (a sort of marketplace) and someone came up to me smiling. I was thinking “oh my god, who is this person??” and then she said “Hi, it’s Lina, remember me from BRENG running?” Of course! Only she didn’t have running clothes on. In fact she was all dressed up, hair, make up, really nice skirt and blouse, high heels… was your neighbor looking totally different than usual?

I’ve never set up an aid station, but I love the ones that communities set up during big races. You ladies must have had a lot of fun!!

I’m not afraid of things that sting, though I do try to avoid it. I haven’t been stung since I was about 6 years old!

    1. I hadn’t been stung in like 40 years, until some wasps decided to build a nest on our mailbox. I was stung multiple times over a couple of days before I figured out what was going on (you couldn’t really see the nest).

I try to be pretty protective of my skin — it gets plenty of exposure just with running!

  9. We seem to have one of those crisp, fall days happening today. So odd, but it could be so much worse. Your aid station looks and sounds awesome. I can’t remember what race I ran where the aid stations were competing for prizes so they all really brought it. Runners voted after. No bee fear here. I’ve been stung a couple of times and I know it was because I inadvertently upset them. My bad.

    1. Today is cooler, but definitely spring-like. Some rain moving in for the evening, though.

I related my last stinging incidents to Renee. I was stung a few times a kid, and then not for many decades (and then it was multiple times over a few days).

I once called maintenance in my apartment (before I was married) to come kill a bee that had gotten in. I told them I was allergic. They couldn’t find it and of course after they left it came out again. I ended up having to kill it myself anyway!

  10. Glad that your running week was good but I am always scared when I read the word “treadmill”. The “dreadmill” is useful but it was my nightmare: during my training for the marathon I ran 21 km on it and it was a terrible experience!
Not recognizing people is also a problem of mine but I met too many persons because of my past job that sometimes it is impossible to remember their faces.

    1. The treadmill doesn’t bother me. I prefer to run outside, but I actually thinks my body likes the relief from pounding pavement and sometimes it’s just quicker for me.

Especially when it really heats up, I’m more likely to run on the treadmill. Shorter runs, though. Rarely more than 4 miles. I’ve only done a long run on my treadmill once (winter, snow) but even that wasn’t horrible — 8 miles.

  11. The path by the water featured in your post looks beautiful! Just the kind of trail I like to run on. One time our across-the-street neighbor came over to help us plow our driveway before we got a snowplow. Bill asked him “Who are you?” I think his feelings were hurt. In Bill’s defense, he had a hood and sunglasses on and was all bundled up. We recently became much better friends with those neighbors and had them over to our house for dinner 2 weeks ago.

And…I am coveting your chocolate ice cream!!! 🙂

    1. I love that particular trail. The problem is it’s barely 2 miles. Since I’m not running long these days, though, it’s fine.

We hadn’t seen that particular neighbor in quite a while — still, I’m glad Mr. Judy also didn’t recognize her so it wasn’t just me.

    1. Since this was a small race (and there were so many of us), it really didn’t seem like too much work at all.

The RD dropped off the cups & water; we just had to fill the cups and hand them out, and of course clean up (which wasn’t too bad either).
