Running Updates
Monday
I chose to go out later, even though I knew it would warm up quickly — next Thursday I have my annual 4th of July race, and so I went out at the same time as that starts. Tackled the hill by my house again — probably not the wisest move after a 5k yesterday — but whatever doesn’t kill you makes you stronger, right?
Wednesday
There was rain on the radar. There were nasty clouds on the drive to the park (same one I ran my trail 5k on Sunday, read about that here) . . . and yet, not a drop of rain to cool us down. There was lots of fun, and the odd coincidence of lining up next to the same woman beside me at Barreflow the night before.
I brought up the BOTP running with a friend who is doing heart rate training; we saw both hares & turtles (literally!). Glad I decided to go.
Thursday
As the title says, Summer soared this week (not necessarily in a good way). While friends were out trail running this evening, I took to my treadmill for a short speed workout in the afternoon. 5 x 400/200 recovery. Definitely felt no need to torture myself with almost 90F temps outside.
Saturday
A group run by the river. It was definitely a slogfest. I got to run with other for a small portion of this run, but mostly I was on my own, with a big slow down around miles 4 and 5. Oddly enough the last mile was my fastest. No doubt because I was definitely ready for this run to be over!
Favorites of the week
I keep forgetting to share this book I won in Wendy @ Takingthelongwayhome‘s giveaway a few weeks back — thanks, Wendy! We also titled our blog posts the same thing today.
For years we’ve passed a sign to Stuyvesant Falls on the way to my folks. Since I love all waterfalls, one time I googled it. Yes, indeed, it was a pretty good size man made falls.
So after going out for a hike to High Falls, which was pleasant (although very buggy), Stuyvesant Falls was on the way home and we finally stopped to see if we could find them, and find them we did (see above).
This was a very hot day. We did our hike in the morning, before it got too bad — I worried a little about Lola, but the trails were shady and she was fine. The long sleeve tee? It’s Skirt Sport’s Cool It Top — I must say it lived up to its name. I will admit I haven’t worn it on a hot run yet, but I was very comfortable even though it was 85F with a real feel of 95F by the time we were done. It also serves as sun protection.
What’s your favorite piece of running clothes when the temps soar?
Do you go braless when it’s hot? I don’t. Not so much about body image, although I will admit there is that — but more because of protection from sun damage.
Anything fun not running related this week?
Summer was definitely in full swing this week! I am so NOT a summer runner but I just try to suck it up every year and pray for Fall to come early, lol.
That book looks really awesome! I have read many of the Chicken Soup for the Soul books but somehow missed this one!

I enjoy warm summers, but not HOT summers. 85 (and low humidity) is my sweet spot. And of course unfortunately for last week & this coming week we’re way above that!
It keeps seeming as though it’s great weather all around my races, but not actually right before or during. 😦

Glad I was in Buffalo most of week and it was windy there.
I thought it was humid on Friday but not really on Sat. Guess I was too busy trying to keep up with Jen.
Unless I’m wearing a bathing suit I wear a bra. Even with shelf bras for obvious reasons. Don’t like they way they look on me.
I don’t wear anything special in the summer. I don’t have any cool it apparel. Just wear any tank GGU skirt baseball cap and compression socks.
I do love waterfalls too.

I look the same whether I’m wearing a bra or wear a top with a shelf bra. Since I find it much more comfortable with the shelf bra, that’s what I go with.

Everyone needs to be comfortable. I definitely don’t look the same but my bras have padding (and are perfectly comfortable).

Your Cool It top is such a pretty color! Yes, it seems like the heat (and humidity) came out of hiding this week. The hubby was complaining about it yesterday…I told him that these temps are actually normal for July (which is happening tomorrow LOL), but we had no acclimation in June (or even May), so it feels a lot hotter than it actually is. That’s my theory anyways. Even though I love the heat, I recognize just how hot it really is and how dangerous it can get if one doesn’t respect the temps. Max definitely is not a fan. Thanks for linking with us, Judy!

Our normal summer temps are more mid 80s than 90ish (which is what we’ve been having, off and on, the last couple of weeks.

The storms are rolling in as we speak, so I’m catching up on some blogging. Funny how we picked the same name for our posts. Great minds and all… Glad you got the book! It’s really full of inspiration. Stay cool!

We had rain on & off yesterday, which cooled us off, but unfortunately it’s only temporary.

Way to get out there in the heat! I am embracing summer running…no ice to slip on 🙂 Just slow the pace and take lots of water breaks!

I’m always a very good water drinker. Which reminds me I need to freeze a water bottle for tomorrow’s run . . .

I’m managing in this crazy heat and humidity by running on shady trails and walking when I need to. Winter was too cold and long for me to even think about complaining. I have “cooling arm sleeves” that I never remember to wear.

So far it hasn’t been too bad. No doubt because I’m not training for anything so there’s no pressure.

Ugh the heat! I need to remember to run with the cooling towel does it really help? I am also reading the Chicken Soup book so far so good. I like that it is a bunch of shorter stories

I really think the cooling towel helps. You’ll still got hot, of course, but wiping off the sweat with a nice cool “scarf” — feels so good!

Summer running, yeah it sucks. The norm for us has been highs in the low 90’s with high humidity. Unfortunately the lows are around low to mid-70’s so there’s never really a good time to run. I’ve been running some on the treadmill, some outside. I really like Arctic Cool for their cooling shirts and other things.

We are thankfully a lot cooler — I didn’t start running when I lived in TX — I’d sure if we were still there I’d be living on my treadmill!

That book sounds really interesting! And that cool it top looks really cute 🙂 That’s good to hear that the long sleeves weren’t too hot.

Some ambassadors have said that you need to get the cool it top wet for it to really work. Maybe it was just the placebo effect, but it seemed to work just fine for me (or maybe the shade had something to do with it, too).

A secret not to share with many persons…. I always run braless……
When the heat rules I run where I can find many fountains to refresh myself.
Wonderful waterfalls!

I try to get out early enough for it to be shady — I don’t always succeed. It hasn’t been *too* bad yet. I might sing another tune after my race this week.

I do see a theme with the Weekly Run Down this week. The heat was on for sure! So wait.. did you mean “shirtless”, not “braless”? I am prone for sure for starting a run and coming home with my tank top missing! I pretty much think “who cares”. I do run early enough that the sun is not that strong, but still, I could be better on my SPF game. I am trying though!!

Oops, yes, that should’ve been topless. I’m surprised no one else mentioned that, LOL!
Nope, my top stays on. Yes, some of that is vanity, but a lot more is protecting the skin!

Did you like the book? I think I have it on my Kindle but I’m reading a book and listening to one so I probably should wait to check it out.
Great looking hike!

I am also reading & listening to books. That particular book is short stories, so really easy to pick it up for some inspiration every now & again.

Summer has hit here now but apparently it’s going to be cooler for my big run the weekend after next. No Weekly Wrap for me on Sunday as I only ran twice, didn’t take any photos and was away for the weekend with little time to write!

Doesn’t matter if you run or take photos, but I get the time thing; that’s a different story, so to speak.
Summer is very firmly here. A bit TOO much here.

I ordered the book from Amazon and have been enjoying it. I love that they’re only short stories and not long ones.
I love wearing my Oiselle long rogas and flyout tops for running when the weather is hot.

It’s funny, I usually prefer novels to short stories, but these are perfect.
