Burger Battles: 8/12- 18 WRD

Yet more rain (and thunderstorms), a return of heat & humidity, some hiking, a bit less running, and a taste test. That’s what went down this week.

Running Updates

Cloudy & buggy 9 am run

Tuesday
With more thunderstorms/rain in the forecast, I figured I’d be on the treadmill. Except the morning was dry. I got out late, since I hadn’t prepared at all, and even though it was buggy, warm, and humid, it wasn’t too bad. Probably because I was trying to keep my HR low.

Thursday
Another evening trail run with friends (with a little bit of sprinkling going on). Probably the easiest trail we did this summer, and pretty, too! The trail was only 2.5 miles but a friend agreed to run an extra .5 mile so I could get 3 (and not get lost).

The kind of run where you really wish it would rain

Saturday
Disgustingly hot and humid, but thankfully cloudy. Slower than normal while keeping the HR low, but not too bad. That’s the trade-off: more time on your feet.

We tried it: Impossible Burger

Favorites of the week
I very rarely eat fast food (luckily I have the option to make my own meals most of the time). Mr. Judy had a coupon for a free Impossible Burger when you purchased a Whopper at Burger King, so we tried it out. If you compare the Impossible Burger herewith the Whopper here, it’s kind of a wash, frankly, as far as nutrition goes. Neither one is terribly healthy.

I am also not super into veggie-meat replacement foods anymore, because that ingredient list is long and not always that healthy. On the other hand, it’s really nice for vegetarians to at least have an option, and there’s also the whole issue of cows and greenhouse gases.

Mr. Judy tasted the Impossible Burger, which I finished, and said it was okay. Of course he knew it was a veggie burger so that’s not really a fair comparison. Google Impossible Burger vs Whopper and you’ll find more people’s opinions.

Scenes from Saratoga Spa State Park

I had planned that Impossible Burger to fuel some hiking; in fact, I was trading a run for a hike. Long story short it didn’t really happen, but we did do a series of shorter hikes in a park I’ve been to a few times — always for running — but haven’t gone to just to explore. I still got in about 18 floors, which is quite a bit more than a normal day for me.

Tech fail

I tried to video my practicum practice session this week (the dogs were a lot calmer), but I only managed to video our discussion afterwards.

My parents are finally getting a much-needed aide next week. I can’t begin to tell you how long that process dragged on. Now the real fun begins, because my Dad doesn’t think they need help and he can be downright snarky to people. I don’t expect it to go smoothly at first, but my Mom, who can take care of herself, really needs that help taking care of him. Any good vibes appreciated.

Would you ever choose a veggie burger over a real burger? I am actually not fond of real burgers, never was, but my mom loves them so I don’t know where I get it from.

Techonology: friend or foe — or does it depend on the day?

What’s your favorite activity to do instead of a run?

  1. I’ve wanted to try the Impossible Burger but haven’t made my way over to Burger King yet. I’m not vegetarian but I don’t really eat beef that often. I do enjoy the Beyond Burger, but like you mentioned, it’s not that really any healthier than a regular burger, so I don’t eat it that often.

Sending all the good vibes to your parents. It probably won’t be that easy at first, but hopefully everything goes smoothly eventually.

  2. I do eat the Beyond Meat burgers often but have not had the impossible burger. I feel like if you make them yourself they are healthier. I like the high protein in them it’s hard for me to get enough some days. I am sure it will be an adjustment for your parents to have an aide but should be very helpful. It’s not easy for my parents to admit that they need a little more help than they used to.

      1. We’ve only started keeping kosher about a year ago. It would be easier in the LA area. Greg converted officially last month.

  3. Oh, Judy…hugs to you (and all kinds of good karma) on this transition for your parents. You probably know, both of my in-laws are now gone, but we had a tough time convincing them (especially the MIL) that they needed professional assistance (the poor SIL was worn ragged catering to their constant needs while also working full time). Then, getting them to move to an assisted living facility (and soon there after, an actual nursing home), was challenging as well. The MIL was very demanding and thought “family” should be the sole caregivers, and the FIL had dementia (not bad, but enough it was a problem at times). I hope all goes well for you and the family…

    1. My MIL eventually had 24/7 help. She had to. My FIL had dementia and it wasn’t mild.

While my sister lives somewhat close to my parents, she works. I’m 90 minutes away, unfortunately. My mom really needs the help, and I’m thankful she finally realized it. I just pray they find the right person.

  4. My son eats the impossible burger regularly–at home, not at BK. He’s vegan eats a lot of those kinds of products. He and I debate the ‘healthiness’ of those processed meat substitutes vs the issues around eating animals. I think we all could benefit from a heavily plant-based diet, but I don’t think a little meat is a bad thing. Just my opinion.

    1. I used to eat more of those sorts of things, but I’ve realized that less processed works much better for me. I’ve had times when I’ve eaten almost completely pescetarian, but I’m actually eating a little more meat now because I just got so tired of making 2 meals — one for me, and one for Mr. Judy. I do make him veggie meals occasionally.

I really like Dr. Praegers veggie burgers (and his products in general). They’re tasty & relatively clean ingredients. I actually am not at all fond of hamburgers, so I don’t need a veggie burger to taste like one!

  5. I love veggie burgers, but I don’t do it for health because, like you said, they’re often a wash except for cholesterol wise. I wouldn’t get one from BK or McDs or any of those as none of that appeals, although I don’t necessarily mind fast food. I had a delicious one at a local restaurant in Stowe this month and last week in Katonah and both were essentially a shaped, cooked mashed potato with veg. Delicious especially with guacamole on it.
I had a great techfail – selfail. If I didn’t delete it, I’ll text it to you. Know yours was yoga related, but I really think Skirt needs an outtake brand champ reward
    Hope the aide goes well

    1. Most of the time I don’t post the bad selfies. Yup, I can be as vain as the next person!

I like veggie burgers, and usually when I go to a fast food place we’re traveling and I get a salad. I wanted to indulge Mr. Judy’s curiosity though.

  6. My sister had the Impossible Burger yesterday and she liked it. I don’t eat a lot of meant but sometimes do crave a Whopper. 🙂

I hope all goes well with your parents. You know I’ve struggled with everything after my mother’s stroke but things are going better now. Keep me posted on how it goes.

    1. Never, ever crave hamburgers. Just not my thing. Not my mom’s daughter, she loves burgers (or did, anyway, she doesn’t really like food so much anymore).

I’m 90 minutes from my parents, so it’s just incredibly hard to be there that often. I’m sure there are people who would still do it, and I/we try to go fairly often, but it’s not possible for me to help with the day-to-day and she needs that help.

I know they’ll have to fill out paper work this morning, which is when I normally call, so I’ll try her this afternoon to see how it went.

    1. I have to say I’m kind of surprised an Italian would love Burger King! I’m assuming your wife is Italian, of course.

Generally I only eat at fast food when we’re traveling, and usually salads. It’s definitely easier when you don’t work.

  7. Well done on the trail and the extra, some nice pics there. And I’m pretty sure the aide will be very used to snarky seniors and not be phased by it. But fingers crossed for you and your parents.

    1. Thank you. You don’t know my Dad . . . they had an aide for a short while after my mom’s surgery about 3? years ago. Maybe closer to 4. Right before we convinced them to move.

In fact they had 2, didn’t like the first but liked the second. Haven’t talked to her yet.

  8. Not a hamburger fan and don’t go to BK or MacD.

Hope the aide works out. My mil is 94 and luckily my BIL can help her.

Looks like HR is helping you.

Saturday was downright awful. And I started at 10 when the sun was out. Ugh!!

Work is dominating my life. Not a good fall to train for a marathon. We’ll see how it goes.

    1. Sat was awful at 8. I shudder thinking about 10!

I’m not a hamburger fan either. And the only time I go to BK or MacD is when we travel — and eat a salad.

The long runs tend to be more important than the weekly runs for marathon training. Time on your feet (work doesn’t count, unfortunately, in the time on your feet thing).

  9. The Beyond Meat burger grossed me out so I’m a little afraid to try the Impossible Burger. I like regular veggie burgers that don’t try to be like meat. Good luck with your parents’ aide. I’m sure they are used to not being wanted. It’s such a tough situation.

  10. I tried an Impossible Burger for the first time last week too, but not at Burger King. I had it at the St. Louis airport while we were waiting for our delayed flight home to Philly. I liked it, but it had sauteed mushrooms and onions on it, which is probably most of what I tasted. Sending good vibes your way. Hope the aide works out.

  11. I eat veggie burgers more often than meat, though when we buy them we usually get bean-based ones so they’re not really supposed to taste like meat anyway. I did actually have a fungi-based veggie burger recently – that was pretty good.

  12. I can’t think of the last time I ate at Burger King or McDonalds…. though our running group has connections with Shake Shack, which is slightly better? Maybe? Their vegetarian options aren’t great either…

    1. No Shake Shacks in this area. I’ve been in a few towns that had them on my travels, but never actually eaten at one.

Sometimes when traveling we do stop at fast food because often that’s all that’s available (especially if we have the dogs with us). I usually get a salad. McDonalds actually makes really good salads!

  13. I’ve tried the impossible burger and it’s ok, and like you said, it’s nice to have choices. But I prefer an old school black bean burger for the taste and because they tend to be healthier. But my husband definitely likes the impossible burgers better than other types of veggie burgers. It makes sense since he’s a meat eater and they taste closer to meat.

    1. I’m with you on the bean burgers, preferably my own, although I am rather partial to Dr. Praegers, too, cause yeah, lately life has been busy!

Sadly I’d never be able to convince my husband to eat a veggie burger — a whole one — not if a real burger is available. 😦
