I do it my way: Runfessions August 2019

Not only are we into the unofficial end of summer, for the most part, lately, the weather has been hinting at Fall. Are you ready to let go of Summer and plunge into Fall? I enjoy every season, except Winter. It’s just never been my thing. I’m joining Marcia @ Marcia’s Healthy Slice and getting a few other runfessions off my chest.

Easier to find things when it’s all put away!

I runfess . . .
I have a clean secret: it’s the mountain of washed, unfolded laundry that’s been living on top of my dryer this Summer. Usually I’m not quite this bad, but YTT took up a lot of time — at least it’s a clean secret, and not a dirty little secret.

Since I wrote the paragraph above a few weeks ago, I have actually tacked the mountain. Now it’s just a little spilt soil.

I am only loosely running by heart rate. I have a couple of books that talk about it, and I reread one and did some calculations. I still haven’t looked at the second, newer book. It’s similar to the way I did Galloway: my own way. Not paying strict attention to the “rules”, just seeing what feels right to me.

I’m probably still not running as slowly as I ought to if doing HR training, but I am running slower on my easy runs. Which has been a big help on those hot, humid days when I got out too late lately.

That I think HR training is great for runners, like me, who have a hard time with “perceived effort”. I know if I didn’t have HR data available to me now, I’d probably be looking at my pace and running a lot faster even when I shouldn’t (hot days, easy runs, days when I slept poorly the night before, days after a race).

I also find myself running a lot of positive splits these days, because my HR definitely seems to go up as I run, although that’s also dependent on my route. It will be interesting to see what happens when fall arrives — yes, some trees are already turning and losing their leaves — and cooler morning temperatures are the norm.

I have a lot of summer dresses. Dresses are so easy, amiright? Except . . . as I’ve slowly built up my Skirt Sports wardrobe (which yes, includes dresses), I find myself not wearing my other Summer dresses that much.

I am able to live in Skirt all Summer long, since I don’t work — and when I get a job teaching yoga, I can still sort of live in skirt (only it will be tights, and yes, Skirt Sports makes those, too). I no longer need so many dresses, so I’m in the process of going through them and paring down.

  1. I’m away too much. I have to do the laundry and put it away immediately. Same with mail. I say read it and toss. I hate clutter.

    That being said I need to de clutter my clothes. I only wear SS for running. Not for work and socializing. I prefer my Loft outfits. Gotta clean out and giveaway.

    Rules? What are they? Though it does work for most esp HR and intervals if you do it right.

  2. Ha! I’m staring at an overflowing laundry basket as I type this. My family knows better than to complain because I’d just tell them to fold it themselves!

    I try to do all the training things but I usually just do it my way as well. I’m not going to win any races and right now, it’s all I can do to even run much, so really, what’s the point?

    1. Luckily (I guess) for me it’s only my laundry (plus sheets). Mr. Judy does his own. I would never have been happy having to do other people’s laundry, but you do what you gotta do.

      Obviously I’m not going to win any races. 🙂 I like to try new things. Not sure that I’m slowing down yet but then again haven’t really been pushing much this year either.

  3. I runfess that I’ve been ready for summer to be over since it started, lol. I’m a cold weather girl so we’re coming up on my two favorite seasons 🙂

    After my marathon, I want to start running with my HR monitor. It would be good to really see what pace is easy, medium and hard for me.

  4. I too use rules as a rough guideline. ALthough I have to say my Fenix5S gives me a summary of how much time I’ve spent in each HRZ so it’s a no brainer. I am good at running by feel though. Laundry and folding it are things I don’t mind. It does tend to sit folded atop my dresser sometimes though,,,probably because I have too much stuff. Thanks for linking!

  5. I am a big fan of training “your way”. I don’t think a one-size-fits-all training plan is right for each of us. We all have our own individual styles and life happens differently for each of us. I have never done heart rate training but I suspect I run too fast on my easy runs too. I might have to break down and buy a Garmin that measures heart rate. Right now I just use a $10 Timex sport watch.

    And yes to all the dresses. I just got some on sale from Title 9 and I love them! So easy and comfortable.

    1. Title 9 is nice, too. They’re based in Seattle, so in the past my SIL has given me gift certificates to them for my birthday.

      I think you do just fine doing your own thing. I think a lot of runners do. If it ain’t broke, why fix it, right?

  6. I have a ton of clean laundry from before my vacation that I still haven’t put away…I also need to start putting away my summer clothes. Hopefully I can finally tackle that this weekend!

    I think HR training looks really interesting. I probably shy away from it because I know I’ll have to slow down my running, which already seems too slow as it is! I’m interested to see how it goes for you!

  7. I put my laundry away every week (barely) but my collection of tops that need to be ironed is growing …. I never had the patience for HR training. Maybe I should try it now while I’m in a running slump anyway. 😛 Thanks for the head’s up on the SS sale!

  8. I’m great about folding the laundry almost immediately as it’s done…but then it lingers (all neatly folded) in the basket for a few days. I have never done HR training, but have often wondered if I should give it a try. I usually just run (or race, even) based “on feel.” That’s all I know, and it’s served me well LOL

    1. Yes, running by feel definitely serves you well. We’re not all like that though!

      I used to be pretty good about getting the laundry at least out of the laundry room — the last couple of months have been pretty intense, though!

  9. I try to run by heart rate on my easy days – but lately my monitor has been so wonky it’s unreliable. I was standing at a stoplight chatting with my friend as we waited for the light – and it said my HR was 194. Nope.
    I runfess that I also have a mountain of clean laundry. I brought it up from the laundry room but just couldn’t motivate myself to put it away. I basically just picked clothes from it and then tossed them into the dirty basket until it was time to do laundry again. Not one of my best moments haha.

  10. I have to admit that I fold and put away our laundry immediately after it comes out of the dryer or gets dry if it’s hanging to dry. Ironing, on the other hand… I used to have an ironing pile, but now I fold it and put it away and iron it when I wear it “if I feel like it.” Most times I choose not to iron an item, and it looks just fine.

    Don’t the cooler mornings feel great? It was in the high 50’s both days (at 5 AM) when I ran this week and my pace was significantly faster. I’m hoping it will be cooler for my half in two weeks.

  11. I never check my HR during the workouts.
    In summer I only wear “summer dresses”. I am retired so I don’t need to wear anymore “formal” dresses.
    Yes, fall is coming but heat is not leaving!

  12. My laundry is clean, but it sometimes sits in the bag that it comes back in until I get to it as I have way too many clothes. Usually it’s underwear that has me foraging. I can only wear Skirt for working out and the occasional casual day so it hasn’t yet taken over

  13. Laundry is the only housework-type job I like so I always keep up with it. I put my clothes away immediately. Hubby’s go in a basket and it’s up to him to put them away. Cleaning, OTOH, not so much!

    1. I so don’t enjoy laundry. Or pretty much any other sort of housework type job other than cooking, quite frankly.

      Hubby is also in charge of his own laundry. It’s never folded at all. It’s lucky if it ever gets put away, but that’s not my problem. I’m doing the sheets, the towels, the dog coats in winter . . . he can do his own clothes IMHO.
