Hello October & Fall: 9/30-10/6 WRD

Dad is back in rehab. Seems to be better, but I let my sister take my mom there yesterday. I’ll be back down for Yom Kippur this week. There was still a lot of walking this week, but little running, although I ran 9 miles for the first time in a long, long time. Perhaps there will be a race next week. Or not. Who knows?

There was basically no strength training this week. Although some of the balance-themed yoga practices had me experiencing some DOMs in my arms — amazing how hard you can work at yoga if you do it right.

Running Updates

Not that much color yet on Mowhawk Hudson path; plenty of leaves & acorns

Friday
My friends were running Saturday. Let’s just say things are tentative with my Dad at the moment. I had to carpe diem to make sure I got a long run in. Well, I didn’t have to get a long run in, but having not run all week, I wanted to.

My resting heart rate actually said maybe you should wait a day, but I was running out of days and decided to go for it. I chose a part flat/part hilly route because some upcoming races, if I do them, will be hilly.

It was super slow to accommodate my HR. It was also quite cold, and when I dressed in a light long sleeve top and my Skirt Sports Toasty Vest, I seriously thought I’d get too warm. I never even unzipped it and wish I’d worn a heavier top as well. Hello, Fall.

Same path, but not part of the race course. Rolling & one large hill/s.

Despite all that, I felt like this was a slow, but strong run. More walking than usual due to the really big hill (again, HR) but I ran 9 miles for the first time since February and felt pretty strong. I’ll take it.

I love using these trees for Fartleks so I don’t slow down too much on the uphill. Not today.

Sunday
I wanted to get two runs in this week though and that just wasn’t going to happen if I ran yesterday. Again, my resting heart rate was a slightly cautionary tale. Keeping my HR low kept this run slow (along with the decent long hill). Forgot to mention this was an actual run to the grocery store to pick up a few items run.

I recommend it!

Favorites of the week
This Mac n Cheese from Trader Joes is really good, but be aware that a box is actually two servings. I ate three quarters on Friday after my nine miles, and finished it off with my dinner Saturday night. They aren’t large portions, either. There’s a slight kick to it.

I ran the Shipyard Maine Half a few years ago.

We went to a pub-type restaurant on Friday. Mr. Judy enjoyed it, and mine was good, although pub food is not really my jam. The signs on the wall reminded me of a couple of halfs I’ve run.

Do you enjoy a beer after a long distance race? I don’t drink and never liked beer anyway.

Ever been reminded of races in a restaurant?

What’s your favorite fall comfort food? I don’t eat Mac n Cheese as much anymore, but I do love it — any time of year, actually.

  1. I am always surprised when someone runs 9 miles and they are not training. But good for you.

Can’t wait to get back to 4-6 miles as a long run LOL

I drank beer in college cuz everyone else did. My hubby likes it. I’m a wine drinker.

I’m not a big mac n cheese fan. I like it but wouldn’t buy it pre-made. I do like it when someone else makes it homemade. Hmm. Maybe I should. I am actually going to cook today as I leave again tomorrow for work.

    1. I haven’t completely ruled out Stockadeathon, which is why I actually would like to get up to a double digit run before. Not sure it will happen cause I don’t need it for another race and I don’t see many friends running it, but again, haven’t ruled it out.

I have never been a FOMO/peer pressure sort of girl. Didn’t like beer so I never drank it. I drank wine in college

Funny how everyone seemed to want Mac n Cheese after I mentioned it. I am a huge fan, I just can’t eat it often. Wish I could!

      1. Not sure if anyone is running the Stockadeathon but that doesn’t really matter to me. I love that race. It depends on my legs post marathon. Or i may volunteer.

      2. I like Stockadeathon, but I can’t say as I really love it. I don’t think I’d really want to do it by myself. There are plenty of races I would, but not that one.

I would say that even if you feel perfectly fine after NYC you should still give your legs some TLC & skip it. I know you’ll do what you feel is right for your body, though.

      3. Ha ha. I’m not as good as you in listening to my body. Most of my Stockadeathon races have been solo. I’ve done it so many times. I like energy of the race and the variety of the course. And I like the new course better than the old.

  2. I’m not a beer drinker, either, so the thought of a post-race beer almost makes me gag LOL But, I do like a hard cider (though, good luck finding that as a post-race option). A couple years ago, after the Quad Cities Marathon (I ran the 13.1 and also on a relay team with three of my cousins), the hubby bought us Bloody Mary’s (Maries?) while we were waiting for our final runner to come in…and that hit the spot after a hot race on a humid day 😉 Now, I’m thinking about making baked mac-n-cheese for later after seeing your pics and reading about it.

    1. Yes, I’m chuckling about how many people wanted to make mac n cheese now. 🙂 I actually used to make a version using butternut squash myself.

However, now mac n cheese is just an occasional treat, so hard to make it for just a couple of servings.

  3. Thanks for the heads up on that butternut squash mac n cheese! I will definitely look for that the next time I go to Tis – I hope they have it!

Congrats on your 9 mile run! Happy to hear that your dad is doing better.

    1. I used to make a butternut squash version myself. You can definitely come up with your own — since it’s just me & Mr. Judy, though, I don’t want a lot of mac n cheese hanging around. Single serving (sort of) is portion control for me & TJ makes really good mac n cheese that isn’t too unhealthy.

  4. Not a beer person, or alcohol at all really
I don’t do much dairy, but can see how mac & cheese would be. Part of why I finally bought a microwave is I like warm food on a cold day. Doesn’t need ot be fancy, I ❤ progresso chickarina
    Congrats on nine miles!

  5. Yay nine miles! I’m not a drinker and I can’t drink on the anti-anxiety meds I’m on (and so I slightly want to now and then, of course). My comfort food is chips and gravy (fries and onion gravy, not crisps and white sauce!!) or a scone!

  6. I’ll enjoy a post-race beer if it’s an IPA, but usually I’d just as soon go to Starbucks. I’ve been buying Cracker Barrel boxed mac & cheese mix b/c my husband — lover of crappy food — loves it. It does taste good but the nutrition info isn’t great, I think I will make a TJs run this weekend and look for this.

  7. I’m a fan of a post-race beer, or maybe I just think I am. I always get it but only drink half and make Mike finish the rest. I know I love mac and cheese! That’s my favorite comfort food.

  8. So sorry to read about your dad, Judy. Hoping for the best there. Every fall I think I want to run the Hudson Mowhawk Marathon, then every fall I don’t. The path looks so pretty! Way to go with your 9-miler.

I do enjoy a post-race beer. We did a 5k a few weeks ago at a brewery and the post-race beer tasted especially good because they served it with soft pretzels.

  9. sorry to hear about your dad. good that you’ll go down this week. I know it’s a pretty religious period at the moment but that”s basically because my best friend in Chicago is pretty religious and it’s going to be really tough seeing her while I’m there. I’ll just have to make the trek out to her if I have to.

great job on the 9 miles! that’s kind of amazing!

my favorite fall comfort food is probably soups. I like to make spicy carrot soup, sometimes with lentils, cauliflower and kale soup, and then there’s Ron’s chile sin carne (or con) that’s absolutely divine.

I do enjoy a beer after a race. Or just on a Friday night. but it can’t be any old beer. We usually pick up microbrew beers from the supermarket. I would rather drink nothing at all than budwweiser (unless it’s the real Budějovický Budweiser from Czechia) or heineken or some other mass produced beer. Also I can’t say I’m ever reminded of a race from being in a restaurant!

  10. I’ll always partake in a beer after a race, but otherwise, I save my beer drinking for evening. Long run days always seem a bit more celebratory if I do have one in the evening because I usually only drink 1 or 2 a week. Mac and cheese has always been a favorite food of mine. Especially Kraft Shells and Cheese. Yummmmm
