A Spooky Good Time: 10/28-11/3 WRD

Much of this week was spent at my mom’s again. Both the staff and the residents got into the spirit of Halloween. So did Mother Nature with some nasty storms and power outages!

Running Updates

Fall is still falling (but at least no snow yet)

Monday
A dreary, but dry, Monday. Tackled the hilly route again. A bit slower than last week (seems to be a theme) but still a pretty strong run with a good HR on those hills.

I like the combo of the older capris and the blue deco Watch Me Go

Wednesday
I’d planned to run inside before heading down to my moms, but the tv wasn’t cooperating, so I headed outside to take my frustration out on the road — quickly. Not quite as quickly as I’d hoped, but not bad.

A new furry friend

Saturday
I briefly met up with my friends, but ran alone. It was a nice, strong run. This week tapered a bit more than I really wanted/planned to, but it is what it is and better to go low then overtrain. Dearly wanted to go out for breakfast with the rest of the gang, but miles to go before heading down to my mom’s on Sunday.

I had a jacket on over the top with the slits for my watch. I rolled back the sleeve of the jacket, so I could peak at my watch occasionally. I ran almost entirely by feel, not even checking my pace every mile, just my HR now & again — and I managed to keep it pretty much where it needed to be. Guess that’s what I’ll do until it’s really just too cold.

They may be older, but they can still cut a rug!

Favorites of the week
Mom wasn’t planning to go to the Halloween party, but I said I’d go with her (seriously, she needs to get out of that apartment!), so she went & enjoyed herself. The music was pleasant, the decorations and costumes were great, and my mom enjoyed herself and took her mind off her worries for a while.

Mom’s not afraid of the good witch

It was a very hectic few days at my mom’s. My Dad  is scheduled to come home on Monday. He’ll have an aide 24/7, at least at first, which meant clearing out my parents’ second bedroom. I feel as though all I’ve done the last 10 years is clear out their stuff. Oh wait, it’s true, I have, again and again. Sigh.

After 2 months in hospital and rehab, my Dad is deeply depressed and has lost most of his will to live, and a lot of strength — and weight, too. We expect him to regain some strength — maybe. Or maybe he’s just reached the tipping point. He’s not eating much, either, and that was his one great joy.

My mom is always thinking negatively, and the truth is no one knows if he’ll turn around once he comes home. Maybe. Maybe not. He’s fast approaching 94. Only time will tell. As you read this I’m either en route again or at my moms — going through their papers, rearranging, so it may take a while before I get back to you — but I will!

How did you spend Halloween?

How do you feel about people walking/running listening to music without headphones? It seems a lot more common and I want to yell at these people to put in some damn headphones.

Has it snowed yet where you live?  Not yet here. Possibly a little next week, but my guess is it would quickly melt.

  1. I like your weekly summary! It sounds like you have been having quite a busy week in caring for your parents. Great that your mum could join the party! Sorry about your dad – hope he will feel more optimistic soon.
I haven’t seen anyone running listening to music without headphones, neither in Europe nor here in Florida where I currently am. But it would annoy me no end!
    Have a great week!

  2. Oh gosh! Good luck to you and your parents. It sounds like a bit of a tough time. Best of luck on your 15K. No snow here in Maine yet but it is getting noticeably cooler.

  3. Oh, I loathe anyone doing anything on speakerphone where others can hear it. I don’t need to hear their conversations or their music. People are so rude sometimes.

I’m so sorry to hear about your dad. Maybe coming home will help him.

  4. I love that you went with your mom to the Halloween party – it looks like it was a really fun time!

I’m so sorry to hear that your dad is struggling 😦 I really hope that coming back home and the change in scenery will help to lift his spirits.

  5. I think it’s great that you were able to coax your mom out. I hope that coming home lifts both of their spirits more. It’s a lot of stress on you. Glad you have all of your yoga to help you relax and unplug a bit.

  6. The Halloween party with your mom was a great move! Every year, I have to laugh at our society…we get Halloween, one day a year where we can dress in costume with no one really looking at us oddly for doing so. Thinking of you and your family, Judy. I hope your father’s return will go well for all of you.

  7. I’m so glad you talked your mom into going to the Halloween party and that she had a good time. I hope your dad does better once he gets home and with your mom again.

Oh my goodness, someone had her music playing loudly from her phone while she walked on the treadmill at the gym the other day and even though it was classic rock and I enjoyed the music, I hated the way it sounded coming out of the phone without better speakers. I wanted to scream at her that maybe, just maybe, everyone else in the gym didn’t want to hear her music. Of course, I kept my mouth shut and I’m ranting to you about it. But you did ask… 😉

No snow here yet, we didn’t get our first frost until yesterday morning.

  8. Sorry about the stresses with your mom and dad – that’s hard. Matthew saw his parents yesterday for a joint birthday meal with his brother (this is usually the guys and their parents, we two wives stay away. His dad was depressed and his mum confused – he was pretty upset when he got home.

No snow here and hopefully not for a good while yet … we’ll see!

    1. I can imagine he was upset. Unfortunately this has been going on many years in my family. My mom thinks she’s still very sharp, and she is pretty sharp considering her age, but there’s definitely a change and the fact that she doesn’t even realize it . . . 😦

  9. It really bothers me when people dont use headphones. Also when people talk on their phones with speakerphone when out in public. I just don’t get it…
Sorry about your dad. I’m sure all of this is very stressful for your family.

    1. Thanks, Lisa. People on their phones in public really annoy me. I’m not saying I never get on my phone in public but no on speakerphone, and I actually try to avoid it because it just annoys the heck out of me.

  10. Worked on Halloween then hair appt. I was hoping to miss the treat or treaters. But no and I ran out of candy so I left and went out with a friend.

My mil is 94 and never leaves the house. So sad.

Hope things work out with your dad.
