Baby it’s cold out there: 11/11-17 WRD

A week at home (although I’m probably at my parents or on my way home as you read this — just a visit) felt glorious. In fact, by Tuesday I felt extremely run down so I took a real rest day — stayed in my pjs all day. Binged watched a few shows (mostly because Lola had settled in on top of me), in between doing a lot of cooking/baking because I’ve had so little time to cook lately. I felt a lot better after that!

Running Update

Wednesday
I definitely wanted to take a few days off running after my painful 15k (read about it here). I chose the mill due to potential for black ice after our snow/sleet storm the previous day (not much snow, quite a bit of sleet), and I won’t lie — the cold. Kept the paces relatively conservative, picking it up just a little each mile, and everything felt fine.

Getting my ducks in a row

Friday
Running group getting together to run long tomorrow, but it would be much colder. So I decided to run long today, and see how my foot felt. Wore the same model shoes as I wore in the 15k (but not the same pair), set out thinking 6-7 and ended with a nice strong 7 and no pain at all. Of course it was slower and mostly flat.

A cold one but sunny at least

Saturday
I’m not usually a fan of the recovery run, but I wanted to actually get 3 runs in this week so just did 3 easy miles today (after my long run yesterday). Recovery runs still don’t move me, but other than the cold, it was fine.

High Rise Leggings will be great for yoga, too

Favorites of the week
Just being home. I’m not sure how long that will last; my Dad still isn’t doing great. If we end up having to put him in a nursing home, I’ll be starting the whole back & forth driving my mom around thing again. Not sure that will happen; only time will tell.

Three pain free runs (as opposed to only two last week, with the race of course being super painful the last third).

Sunshine. It may be unseasonably cold, but we’ve at least had some sunny days.

The Skirt Sports High Rise 7/8 tights (which on me is just leggings, LOL! — see the photo above). Tried those puppies out on my long run and really liked them. You can buy them here and they’re a still at $49.99 right now. They are snug around the hips, so I sized up. You might be find if you’re not a hippy chick, and some have said once they wriggled into their normal size it was fine, too.

What do you do when there’s potential for black ice? Assuming you live in an area that gets a real Winter.

Do you care where on your stomach your leggings hit: above, below, or right at the navel?

How often do you take a real rest day?

  1. I like high waisted but not a leggings fan. I only have one pair. I think my skirts work fine for yoga.

    Glad your foot is fine.

I do do recovery runs if I can. Especially if I have company.

Today was as beautiful as yesterday and if you dress right very comfortable. Of course still trying not to overdress.

  2. I try to avoid black ice as much as possible, which usually means running on the roads this time of year. Even that isn’t always an option. Sometimes black ice finds me and yesterday, it wasn’t a good encounter.

I love high waisted tights for running–simply because they keep me warmer in the winter!

I hope your dad is ok.

  3. Those leggings are cute! I love the pattern. Being tall (5’9), a lot of leggings/tights are 7/8 length on me (or shorter) by default. I’m glad the cropped look is still in style LOL I prefer mid-rise or slightly lower…can’t stand high-waisted anything…

  4. Yay on being home! I felt the same this weekend after giving up 1/2 of my past two weekends to work. Glad you are running pain free this week. I hope that lasts. Love the running tights and that price is a bargain! I won’t risk running in black ice. Even walking Scooby is risky because my neighborhood has so many hills. I can easily start sliding even if he’s not pulling.

    1. You do a crazy amount of travel for work! I think all lawyers seem to (my Dad, my brother).

Thankfully our dogs, even together, never pull us anywhere. If the roads are that bad, they don’t want to walk anyway!

  5. I really hope things don’t get worse with your dad. These things can be so stressful. No wonder you felt better after some rest!

I also hope your running stays pain-free!

I definitely won’t run outside if there is potential for black ice. no way. i’ve slipped enough tiems in my life to learn (and fallen off my bike).

for leggings I actually love them high-waisted, but I don’t have a lot like that.

    1. I don’t have a lot of really high waisted leggings either. These are very comfy!

My guess is this is the start of the real decline for my Dad, but not sure yet. I also don’t think it’s going to be really quick though. I’ll have a better feel by Thanksgiving, I think.

  6. Three pain-free runs, Judy! Seems like your foot problem is solved. Good for you.
I like the sunny photo with the lake. Soooo many ducks on one pond!
Just wondering: what does LSD and ST mean in your weekly summary?

    1. My toes on that foot still feel just the tiniest bit funky, but running isn’t painful (and I haven’t been tackling any heels). My hope/guess is that with time they’ll go back to completely normal.

LSD = long, slow, distance run aka long run
      ST = strength training

I put that stuff in more for me than my readers!

  7. Sorry your dad’s not doing great. I’ll be the first to admit I head to the mill for safety reasons. I have to run short stints on very busy roads to get to other quieter running routes. When those shoulders are compromised due to snow/ice or if I think conditions are such that cars are more likely to lose control, I do not put myself out there.
I’m right there with you on the 7/8 tights! They are full length on me and I LOVE that!

    1. My neighborhood doesn’t have any sidewalks, but there also isn’t a lot of traffic (even if what there is has a tendency to speed through the hood).

We live on a dead on, though, and often the hardest part is just getting down our street — they do a much better job on the rest of the neighborhood.

      Definitely team 7/8tights. 🙂

  8. I just run in neighborhoods as little as possible if there might be black ice – the only place I’ve had problems is if people don’t shovel their sidewalks well.

I can’t handle high waisted pants/leggings myself. Anything navel high and above feels constricting to me.
