Running in skirt: 1/6-12 WRD

I was home all week, which helped, but I’ve also been quite busy between appointments and prepping to teach and teaching yoga. I felt pretty run down by the end of the week  — mostly due to a week or so of poor sleep — so I took a lot more rest than usual.

Running Update

Monday
I’ve been spending too much time with my treadmill. I thought I’d be running outside today, but then it snowed on and off today — lightly — but we’d had rain all day Saturday, with a drop in temps on Sunday, which means black ice is hiding under that snow. No thanks.

Not everyone takes down their decorations quickly — and I’m okay with that!

Tuesday
Ran errands, then ran at home later. Good news: it had warmed up so any ice left from yesterday had melted. Bad news: I lost the sunshine we had earlier in the day. I was hustling to get it done before my haircut, so a nice pace (at the right heart rate).

Unseasonably warm with temps dropping — check it out — running in a skirt in January!

Sunday
Definitely felt run down this week, so you’ll notice there wasn’t a lot of activity. I kept putting off a long run, toyed with the idea of skipping it altogether, but by Sunday I wasn’t feeling too bad and it was low 60s (with wind — notice my neck gaiter on the hat).

I struggled a bit with what to wear, as I knew the wind would make it feel cooler and the temps would be dropping. I hauled out my long haul skirt, work a wool top, and it was mostly good. I deliberately kept the pace mostly easy, and I got 7 miles done. Glad I had the opportunity to run in a skirt in January (it’s already dropped into the 50s, and will only go down from there).

#teamnuun 2020!

Favorites of the week
Happy to be back representing #teamnuun for a second year! Which reminds me, I really need to go drink some Nuun Rest . . .

Lola enjoying the heated bed (that’s Chester on Mr. Judy’s screen!)

We plugged in the heated bed that used to be Gizmo’s and the dogs seem to be enjoying it.

I taught my second Cat Yoga class at the Humane Society. There were some people who had come to the first class. Even more rewarding was one of the women telling me afterward that one of the moves I did really helped her back, and another sharing her word for 2020 with me.

There are some exciting things brewing with my Yoga, but I’m not quite ready to share yet! What I am ready to share is my newest video: it’s basically the Yin half of the class I taught. I plan to video the first half of the class, which is more Vinyasa style, soon. Check out the video above here.

Sign up for my newsletter here to find out when I add new videos, and you’ll receive a free companion PDF to the video above and a bonus Abundance meditation.

I also have a short video I filmed in the car post run today, and I need your feedback on that one! Please watch it here (it’s only 2 minutes) and leave me a comment.

What good news did you get this week?

What’s your go-to when you’re feeling like your coming down with something? A while ago I listened to an audiobook that recommended putting black pepper in your tea. I swear it helps (I imagine it would work just fine with coffee, too).

How has 2020 started for you?

  1. 2020 has started the very same way 2019 started – with a back injury. If the rest of the year pans out like 2019 did for me, I’m okay with it!

I really enjoyed your Quick Relax Your Back Yoga class I took earlier this week. You have such a calming voice which really adds to the experience.

    1. Thank you so much for your kind words! My sister (and father) suffer with back issues, but so far, knock on wood, I’m ok. Of course on rare occasions I do sleep wrong or move the wrong way, but in general, that’s not my issue. I know it’s such a misery.

  2. Your yoga practice and teaching are bringing you exciting new things. So cool! Isn’t this mild winter awesome? It was in the 70s here yesterday and 60s today. I know it won’t last, but still…

Checking out your yoga video. I am in the mood for some yin yoga.

      1. We are definitely slated to get some snow. Amounts & when remains to be seen. But there’s so much distance between us, my guess is you’ll be fine (I hope you don’t get rain!).

  3. You had a haircut and didn’t show us the final result! 😉 You’ll have to show us next week.
Thanks for the link to the 2 minute video. Yes, I definitely would appreciate a daily 10-minute yoga session. My favourite excuse is that I “don’t have the time”…. but as you say, everybody can find 10 minutes in their day!!

    1. I came up with the idea for the gaitor a few years ago — it totally works! We were getting some crazy wind this weekend.

Very difficult to do a 5 min yoga video (even though you’ll find lots of them out there).

Actually, it looks like it will be a collaboration between me & several yoga teachers — I think it’s going to be awesome! That should allow me to share it much sooner than I would have been able to if I had done it all on my own. I can’t even begin to tell you how much time goes into making those videos! Except yesterdays. I was going to edit it but then just let it be.

  4. Thanks for sharing more about your yoga practice and videos – looking forward to checking it out!

Congrats on representing Nuun for the second year! I no longer use the product (due to tummy issues) but I really loved representing them when I did – such a nice group of people!

  5. So were you more comfortable this time teaching cat yoga? Was it a large class?

So far 2020 has sucked…really frustrated with the continuing foot pain that is no better. But I have a high tolerance for pain and I refuse to let it stop me from running and getting together with friends.

Knock on wood…I don’t get sick. A huge resistance due to maybe being around germy people all day for 40 years LOL.

Unfortunately I blog, comment and do almost everything on my phone…except for at work. The only videos I watch is on how to do things like in knitting. But I’m sure others will appreciate your yoga videos. I prefer to go to a class.

    1. It was a large class. Unfortunately only one of the four kittens came out to play, but she was a cutie.

Pain with no known cause is super frustrating. My year hasn’t exactly started out well either, but obviously for different reasons.

There are still always things to be grateful for. We did get to the movies this week, and we rented one yesterday. Unfortunately both were kind of meh, actually one was a real snoozefest, so glad I didn’t see it in the theater like I really wanted to.

  6. 2020 so far is going well. We visited my dad and he’s hanging in there, my mom is ok, although procrastinating her cataract surgery like a boss. Haha! I love the idea of a 21 day challenge. Yoga with Adriene is doing a 30-day yoga thing I wish I’d known about before 10 days in. I definitely need yoga consistency back.

    1. I would think you could just start the YWA challenge at any time?

Tell your mom cataract surgery is no big deal. And she’ll see so much better afterwards. I already have mine started, but still far away from surgery, thankfully. Sucks because I’m so careful to wear sunglasses all the time!

  7. I really need to do some of your yin videos – I’ve been off the yoga practice for several weeks now.

I know black pepper helps with absorption of the active ingredient in turmeric – maybe it’s the same for the antioxidants in tea? I usually like a spicy ginger tea when I’m getting sick, though I think it mostly helps keep my sinuses clear-ish rather than warding off whatever bug is going around.

    1. Herbs & spices can be medicine. 🙂 But I like that theory (can you tell science isn’t my thing?).

I don’t get many colds, I’m more likely to get some kind of flu-like virus. I feel better today, knock on wood, even after my long run. Always a dangerous time because it’s easy to push too hard when you feel better & it’s a busy month!

  8. I keep forgetting to check out your videos..too busy reading all the WRD’s (my excuse LOL). I’m trying to keep an open mind with the weather…so far, I’ve only had one date with Milly. I’m not looking forward to a repeat of last year, so I hope things stay a little bit stable.

    1. That’s a good excuse, Kim — I know it’s super time consuming, and we all appreciate you & Deborah hosting the linkup!

It looks like another storm is headed our way this weekend. Can’t tell anything until it’s actually snowing, of course. 🙂

  9. Since any bug I get seems to love my throat, I try honey lemon ginger combo. It’s probably psychosomatic, but it helps.
Also Skirt, and a tee shirt twice. Bananapants. Told Darlene that I almost wore that pattern, but went Cascade. Come to think of it, I may own it in Cascade.

    1. I think a lot of things are probably placebos, but hey, placebos can work!

It’s way warmer down in the city than it is up here, remember! Saturday was warm, but I was still chilled, no doubt because I wasn’t feeling well.

      1. I was up there too-although not for a run. We came up for lunch and pie. The biggest difference on Saturday was that it was sunnier down here. It felt damp there

      2. It felt good for January, but it was damp. Almost put on a jacket after lunch, but we ended up parking close enough it wasn’t necessary. When we contemplated a walk to visit Nipper though it was (pun intended) nippy

      3. I did have a jacket on when I went outside for a snack between my yoga class & the meditation workshop (I had an hour to kill). Still, vastly better than what’s coming up next week. Brrrr! Running this weekend looks damn cold.

  10. Yay on being working with Nuun again. I really love it! I’m glad yoga teaching is going so well for you. LOL on the heated dog bed. Scooby is my heated blanket when he sprawls on top of me!

    1. Mr. Judy loves that Bandit lays on his side of the bed when I go to sleep (earlier than Mr. Judy). He also likes to put his cold feet on Bandit, who doesn’t seem to mind.

Lola had me pinned to the couch a couple of times this weekend, LOL (it’s rare that I actually lay on it).

  11. I go directly to drugs if I feel a cold coming, and also go with my craving for salty things as I assume the antiseptic helps. If just run down, I up my sleep. I was really tired after my long run yesterday and lay my head on my pillow at 9.30 – I feel better than I’d expected this morning.

    1. Salty things — that’s something I haven’t heard before! When I don’t feel well, it’s rarely a cold. Usually mild (or not so mild) flu-like symptoms.

Although I strive to get 8 hours, it rarely happens, more from just not being able to sleep that long. I envy people who sleep well!

  12. I just signed up for the subscription to be notified! My go to if I feel myself getting sick tends to be ginger tea with some lemon and honey. I’m not sure if it really helps but it makes me feel better and that has to count for something 🙂

    1. I like ginger tea all the time — I drink it pretty much daily. I rarely put honey in it, but honey has lots of medicinal powers!

Thanks for subscribing, Chaitali! I hope to have a newsletter out this week.

    1. I used to do ACV, but I stopped a while back. Can’t really tell a difference. I think for me, rest is really the key. I feel much better this week, knock on wood!

One day you’ll be all healed up & ready to try one of my videos. 🙂

  13. I am a fan of Nuun Rest. It helps me relax and sleep better. It is already 9pm and I am sleepy and ready to go to sleep. 🙂 That is great that you got positive feedback about your class!!! Well it is halfway through January and I got sick and was home for a few days and also fell. Not good so that means the rest of the year will go well? Usually when I feel like I am going to get sick, I start taking Emergen-C. Well, except it didn’t work this last time because I still got sick. Bummer.

    1. I’ve actually been using Rest after my runs. Seems to be fine — it doesn’t put me to sleep for the rest of the day. 🙂

Hopefully you’ve had your 3 bad things and can get on with the good things that I’m sure 2020 has for you!
