My Good Samaritan Moment: 2/3-9 WRD

Mr. Judy was slated for a short business trip the latter end of the week. The snow/ice had different plans for him, though, and he ended up having to reschedule. I have to admit I was looking forward to just cooking for myself and getting at some projects I wanted to tackle.

On the other hand, it was nice not having to manage the snow and ice on my own. The snow wasn’t too bad at all, but the ice . . . that’s a different story.

Running Update

Partly cloudy was the theme for this week

Monday
The sun eventually peeked out, but most of this day was gloomy. What else is new? The dusting of snow, the cold drizzle in the morning. My body seemed unhappy with back to back running days, my VO2 MAX moved down (just a point) for the first time in ages.

Not sure why I wasn’t feeling this run. And why didn’t I think to make it my long run instead?

Wednesday
My first time trial was a long time ago — September, as it turns out. I raced enough that I didn’t really feel the need for another one. I decided to try one yesterday, before the snow/ice moved in. For some reason I was just really lacking in energy. I warmed up half a mile, tried to run hard for a mile and half, and then easy the last mile.

Looking back on my one & only time trial, I’d stopped my watch & restarted it between the warmup and the actual time trial. I didn’t think to do that this time. I also had to stop because there’s a short tunnel I had to go through, and I know that it ices up — good thing, it was a sheet of ice on one end and I had to walk gingerly over that. Ice would be a theme for this week, too.

I really struggled, and was a bit disappointed, thinking I’d lost fitness. When I compared it, though, the times were actually somewhat close. The first part was slower than that first trial, but the second part was faster. I *think* my HR was a bit lower, but since I forgot about stopping it, it’s my average HR for the entire run.

Anyway, it was a good, hard effort and I remained uninjured. Winning!

The hardest part was walking over the ice in the parking lot, as usual

Sunday
I have been stuck in the 7 mile long run for months. Not training for anything. Today I decided to bust through and add 1 more mile. I had thought about a half the end of April, but it doesn’t look like that will happen.

Funny thing was once I decided to do 8, it wasn’t that big a deal. It was really cold (teens) but not windy, and the sun continued to play peekaboo. And then I had my good Samaritan moment at the end of this run (more on that in this week’s Favorites.

Favorites of the week
I totally forgot to mention this last week — I am so proud to be a Skirt Sports Legacy Ambassador! Which pretty much just means I’ve been wearing & repping Skirt Sports for a long time. I thought this post would be pretty short, it was another uneventful week. Aside from the storm and drama of Mr. Judy not being able to get out. And then my week took a turn — in a great way!

I received a card from one of my running buddies, and thought, oh, how nice, another condolence card. Only it turned out to be from my little running group, and had a very generous donation to Hudson Valley Hospice, who had taken care of my Dad in his final weeks. Even better, my birthday is next week.

I was so touched, and completely surprised! I kind of felt badly that I chose to do my long run today, rather than joining the group yesterday. I worried about the still-icy roads, and frankly just wasn’t feeling it yesterday.

And then . . . I was about a quarter mile from being finished when I saw a credit card in the road. I almost ran on by . . .  what to do? It was right in front of one house’s driveway. There was no house across the street.

Yes, I stopped, walked up, and rang the doorbell. And waited, and waited some more, lots of dogs barking . . . footsteps . . . more waiting, rang the doorbell again. Finally a man opened the door. I asked him if he knew the person on the card. When he said it was him, I asked for ID (you never know).

He was so happy I’d found his card! Apparently he’d given it to his mom, and she’d lost it. They looked for it, but it was during the storm, and he figured they’d find it when the snow & ice melted. I’m sure he would have found it without my help, it truly was right at the end of his driveway (just on the other side of the ice), but still, you never know. He was very happy I’d found it. Considering I’ve had people find my wallet and return it — twice — I was more than happy to return the favor.

And I was glad that I’d listened to my intuition after all and run today.

Do you look forward to alone time?

What body part tends to bother you the most? Lately I’ve been doing fairly well, knock on wood. Until I got this knot in my calf, like yesterday, I have no idea from what.

Have you ever tried to run in a skirt?  Just one skirt and I was hooked!

ICYMI: Runners who battle feet problems, you’re going to love my short Yoga video to help you strengthen those tootsies here. Well, you may not love me during, but your feet will thank you. Do this a few times a week and your feet should feel a whole lot better. In the future I’ll be sharing an even shorter Yoga video to help you side step all those foot problems runners suffer from. 1. It’s nice that you returned the credit card. I once found a driver’s license on the path and I mailed it to the person. I never heard back from them, but I hope that they will at least do something kind for someone else!

Happy birthday! How nice of your friends to donate to the hospice!

  2. Lots of Yoga this week!! I wonder if your yoga video for feet will be doable for me? My left foot’s toes don’t like to bend much…

You have good Karma, Judy 🙂

the body part that hurts me the most…besides my foot… is my left glute! lower back/left bum and sometimes the hip. too much sitting. I do sometimes look forward to alone time, but since I’m alone a lot anyway I don’t really long for it. I used to run in skirts all the time! I stopped because I was sort of between sizes and didn’t like the way the L fit me (from XL) , it was just too tight. I don’t remember the brand I used to wear but they were out of California.

    1. There is a lot of toe bending so maybe not — but you might find other parts that help. I hope so — I know my feet felt really good after working on feet videos all week!

I’m often between sizes, too. It’s really frustrating. 😦

  3. I guess it was a good idea that you dissed us. At least for the guy that lost the credit card. Lol

8 wow. You’re ahead of those running the April half. They only ran 6. Good for you. We ran at UAlbany. It was clear. Too icy at the Crossings.

I actually went to a foot yoga class yesterday but when it hurts to stand on that foot…. ouch. Nerve pain is no joke.

    1. Well, I didn’t diss you, I just didn’t want to run on ice (or at UAlbany) and just had things to accomplish.

I think that guy would’ve found his CC, but glad I was able to get it to the right person.

I don’t think I’ll be doing the half in April — hopefully will find out this weekend when my brother’s here — but I just felt like I needed to break out of my 7 mile rut.

  4. How kind of your running group to make a donation in honor of your dad!

Ha, I wonder if the guy whose card you found thought you might be selling something? I sometimes ignore the doorbell..I know I shouldn’t, but i find it really hard to say no to neighborhood people selling things!

    1. I am very fortunate to have such kind friends.

I only ignore the doorbell if I see it’s someone selling something — or if I’m in the middle of exercising! I was trying to figure out what I’d do if he didn’t answer!

  5. Good for you on being the good Samaritan 🙂 I’ve been doing a lot of 7-miler long runs lately, too. I have a half at the end of April, and a slew of 10K’s coming up, so I’m fine with the mileage for now. I”m doing all kinds of stair-climbing though, LOL

  6. That was really nice of you to return the cc and I am sure he really appreciated it. a very sweet gesture by your running friends in memory of your dad. My husband travels a lot so yes I do look forward to easier dinners sometimes too. I definitely love running in skirts too! Congrats on another year of skirt sports and thanks for linking up

  7. I also make plans by myself when my husband goes out of town. Especially the cooking part, because he hates mushrooms and I love them.

I run in skirts occasionally, but when it’s hot out I prefer not to have the extra layer. I do really love the insulated skirts I have from Skirt Sports.

  8. How great that you found that cc and were able to return it. What a great gift from your running group — so thoughtful. When my husb goes out of town I look forward to cooking all the veggies, watching all “my” shows and going to bed super early. 😛

    1. Yeah, I had plans to watch my shows too. We only had time for one show last night, and we had no shows, so we did watch one of mine. 🙂

I always go to bed super early. The only time we ever go to bed the same time, pretty much, is on vacation!

  9. A good Samaritan indeed! It’s so nice to do a good deed, it really makes us happier. I love that you did that.
I add a random kilometer/mile to my runs as well! It’s never really hard and it’s always great to add a little bit to our runs.
I think that you can totally do a half-marathon in April. At your level of fitness, it’s not too late at all.

    1. I rarely add miles. I’d decided before I headed out that I would try for it, just to get away from the 7 mile rut I seem to be in.

Oh, I know I could do a half in April. The problem is it looks like that weekend will be when my Dad’s burial is. 😦

      1. I’m signed up for a half in June. Still not sure about April, we haven’t actually set a date, but it looks like that’s the date that will work for my siblings (whom I should see this weekend, at least my brother, so we shall see).

I just look on it as it probably wasn’t meant to be, I wasn’t really sure just how I felt about it. Kinda wanted to do it but not sure I was mentally ready to start training.

  10. I love paying it forward.
It’s such a good feeling. Had someone look me up on FB to tell me they’d found my credit card – in Colorado almost a month after I flew back home. Luckily I knew it was missing and had cancelled but that was still great.
I feel you on the time trial. I nearly revisited my summer one and while I was kind of annoyed, I realized it was as much coming off injury as “lost fitness”
    We’ll get there – eventually
With you, Darlene and Helen now Legacy I’m not sure I know any Captains. won’t stop me from “what pattern is this?” questions 😀

    1. The guy hadn’t yet cancelled his card, so I think that’s part of why he was so happy.

I’m unlikely to remember print names! Sometimes, but there’s been so many . . . that’s what the FB group is there for . 🙂

Maybe you should pick an Albany race (not a half, unless there’s a shorter option!) that works with your schedule that we could run with you. The only weekends I know is probably 3/7 & 4/18.

Just remember about April showers (and March snow!).

      Like

      1. I’m going to be there at the end of March, but either you or Darlene said there are no races 😦
I wanted to do 4/18 with my brother but I’ll be away
You always seem to know the pattern names, maybe we have the same taste 😀

  11. Once I lost my wallet at the grocery store and somehow they got my number and called me. I was so happy because, well, everything is in my wallet. Yes, I do look forward to alone time. I like it more because it is also quiet. I’ve run in skirts before (mainly Brooks) but now run in Oiselle shorts.

    1. Once I’d apparently dropped my wallet under my car by the bike path — and had no idea that I had. Someone found it & brought it to my house — which was the second time I’d lost it & someone found it & contacted me. I was extremely happy both times!

  12. Well done on the good deed! I found a drivers license at the Columbus half marathon and we ended up dropping it off at the lady’s house (good thing it had an address on it, haha!). Recently I also found a credit card on a hiking trail and found the owner, who was also hiking. He was super happy too!

  13. Congratulations on Skirt Sports! So fun!

And what a wonderful good deed! It’s always great to be able to help people out like that.

My hip always used to twinge a little bit, but right now, it’s my whole right leg, from glute to toes. The knee is ok, though LOL. I hope to get better soon.

    1. Weird that the knee is ok but you gotta take your victories where you find them! You will get through to the other side; I know it doesn’t feel like it, but someday you’ll realize you feel normal again.

  14. Do you look forward to alone time? Yes! After a busy work week I need lay down time.

What body part tends to bother you the most? High hamstrings & back (sciatica)

Have you ever tried to run in a skirt? Never. My legs are heavy & at 56 many varicose veins.

  15. Well done on the good deed. My husband found a mobile phone on the ground a couple of months ago, it was in a pink sparkly case and we found a drivers licence in it with the address but he didn’t want to go round as a man on his own to a potential young girl’s house. So I went with him and they were sooooo grateful.

      1. We’ve had a few times where people have looked askance at us as a childless couple at a very child-orientated pool on holiday, or girls not wanting to sit next to him on the bus, so we’re probably hyper-aware and he just wanted to do the right thing. Such a shame as he’s a kind and supportive man!
