Steep, Steep-er, Steep-est: 5/25 – 31 WRD

I started the week with my virtual Freihofers’ “race”, and ended it dragging myself through a longish run today — despite really great weather. I think my body was protesting having to go up and down hills again, rather than just downhill.

Running Update

A different starting line this year!

Monday
After practicing my 5ks last week, I ran my virtual 5k today. It was a lovely day to run — cloudy, breezy, almost perfect weather and I nailed my running outfit, too! It was also a slower 5k (due to nasal breathing), but my fastest 5k of the 4 I ran in the last week.

I knew it wouldn’t be fast since nasal breathing is still slowing me down, but choosing a downhill course — and the weather — helped a lot. I had nice negative splits (due to the steep, steep-er, and steep-est hills on the route), and the last mile was the fastest I’ve seen in some time.

And nailed the outfit

I set out to make it hard-er training run, but not really trying to race. Somewhere in between. Mission accomplished. It also was not my slowest version of this race ever, so there’s that, too!

So many rainbows in the neighborhood!

Thursday
Just like that, what used to be our highs has become our lows. I got out early, although it never seems early enough. I went out with the intention of a recovery run, and that’s pretty much what happened.

Still haven’t finished cataloging rainbows in the neighborhood!

Sunday
The weather was really great for running today. It cooled off significantly from the earlier heat of the week. For whatever reason, though, my body was just not having a long run today. I finished, because who wants to walk back 3 miles, but it wasn’t pretty.

I tried really hard to concentrate on the beautiful day, but the reality was I just wanted to be done. Some runs are like that.

Bandit’s been a bit clingy lately. No idea why. He usually only climbs into my lap when he’s scared. He goes through periods like this though. You just have to be patient.

Favorites of the week
I didn’t want to join my friends in their social distance run/brunch — I’m sure it’s fine, but it’s just too big a group for me. I got “together” with a friend of mine — first time we’ve seen each other in person in a couple of months — just sitting and chatting in my backyard.

The hard part was that both dogs wanted to investigate her. It was nice catching up with her — as usual, I’m better in a small group. Or one on one.

Love my new Yoga mat!

New Yoga mat! I bought this one on Etsy. I’m forever carting my Yoga mat up & down stairs, so it’s nice to have one on each floor. It’s really pretty (and hand painted), it’s thicker than the one I already own — which means it doesn’t bunch up at all during my practice. The store on Etsy is TheArtofAnsel — I definitely recommend them!

You can see the fountain Mr. Judy is working on for me in the back.

Are you comfortable being in larger groups again? As I said to someone else recently, I have my mom (we plan to visit her next week, but it sucks that I can’t hug her) and others in my life that are at higher risk.

Would you travel by plane to run a race right now?

What are you looking forward to in June?

Coming up on Tuesday: It’s time to wrap up May. Then it’s time for the virtual Coffee Date next weekend. Don’t forget that Skirt Sports is selling off its inventory, so check out the sale here.

  1. What a beautiful yoga mat!
That fountain will be a great feature during your yoga lessons. The sound of a waterfall is so soothing – even if it’s from a fountain. 🙂
Also, I love all the rainbows you’re finding in your neighbourhood. I saw a real one last week! So beautiful!

  2. I moved my run from Saturday to today because the weather looked way less humid today – I was glad that I made the switch!

I understand what you mean about getting together in groups right now. Even if it’s allowed to meet up in groups again, it’s not so easy to just meet up with people again. I think it’s definitely going to be a process.

  3. Everyone feels differently about the virus. You do what you feel that it is right. No one judges.

I have been seeing my friends for 3 weeks already in a group of 10 so I am fine with it by now. We had 10 yesterday at the library and will repeat it next weekend at Lyons. We were apart and outdoors. It doesn’t seem any different to me if there’s one or 10 as long as you are not near each other. But there’s no pressure to join us. Eventually it will end…just won’t be for a long long time.

Same about flying. I would. My friend just visited her son in NC.

You don’t have a problem with ticks, flies and mosquitoes outdoors? I’m a magnet for bugs. I live in bug spray lol

    1. I think being outside definitely lowers the chances of anything, but still, with 10 people it’s not just 10 people . . . it’s all the people those 10 people interact with. I plan to see my mom this coming week, so I need to be careful (although it’s not like we’re going to be close to her, either). I was much happier just being with one friend.

Unless we have a really rainy summer, we don’t get that many mosquitoes in my neighborhood. Ticks are a different story, but still not too bad in our yard (Lola has picked up one on occasion, but not in long time).

Flies . . . well, our flies don’t bite. The ants can be kinda annoying. Until today, though, I’ve spent most of the last couple of weeks outside a lot & it’s been glorious!

      1. I’ve been hiking a lot. Like everyday and it’s black fly season. Ouch.

We stay apart but again you do what works for you.

  4. I’m not happy in a larger group, esp running – I just feel we would run into adverse comments or find it hard to get around people using the roads alongside us. I’m happy with running with one other person. We did meet two friends in a park on Saturday (accidentally) and stood in a 4 chatting and that felt OK even though its not actually permitted until tomorrow! Love your yoga mat!

  5. love the new yoga mat. Yes I am still leery of groups although I am struggling bc I want to be with my friends. It’s going to be hard to go back to everything. Looks like you had some gorgeous running weather this week!

    1. We had some heat & humidity, too, but on those days I got out early enough. Actually it was only one hot day for running, but several hot days.

It’s hard to balance the need to be with people & staying safe. We actually are not that hard hit up here, so that’s a blessing. Still, planning to see my mom so I guess I’m just more cautious. They have no cases in Independent living & I definitely want to keep it that way!

  6. You did nail the outfit for that 5K 😉 And your yoga mat is beautiful. The hubs and I are going to Virginia Beach at the end of September…hoping things clear with air flight by then. That said, I probably would not be boarding a plane any time before then, though.

  7. I am not comfortable around large groups-I don’t know if I will be for a long time, if ever. My CrossFit opens back up this week with small classes and I’m not comfortable going back for that either!

    1. I don’t think I’ll be comfortable going back to a yoga studio until there’s better treatments or a vaccine, although I’m not sure I’d want to take a vaccine right away either. It’s sad. 😔

  8. Totally understand the hesitancy to to meet in groups of 10, especially if you’re hoping to see at-risk people! I ran with 2 friends on Saturday and it felt strange, even though we kept a distance. It’s so surreal.

Love that yoga mat! The colors are very pretty! Great job on the virtual race and negative splts!

  9. I’m still being really conservative and haven’t gone anywhere or seen anyone. I feel like we have worked so hard to stay healthy, why risk it now? Especially when our numbers here are still all over the place. I’m just not sure what it will take for me to feel comfortable seeing people again, but I know I cant live like this forever!

    1. Yeah, it’s hard to know what the right thing to do is. We aren’t in a hot spot, thank goodness. Still hard to know!

At least right now we can get together outside. Not sure what we’ll do when it gets colder!

  10. I love your new yoga mat. It’s very pretty and being thicker is nice. I can’t wait to see Mr. Judy’s fountain once it’s finished. How perfect will that be for your yoga!

The wisteria is gorgeous. My mom planted one years ago, but it never bloomed.

My brother is going to visit our mom next weekend, but the virus is still too active in our part of the commonwealth for me to risk it. I’m hoping I can go in mid-July for a week like I always do…

And to answer your questions, I have no desire to fly anytime soon for any reason and I don’t see getting together in a big group anytime soon. One or two friends, yes, but not a lot.

    1. I hope you get to go to your mom next month. We’re planning to go tomorrow. Should be interesting. A short visit will mean a long day . . .

While I would dearly love to go somewhere, anywhere, I also don’t think that now is the right time. I keep trying to talk my husband into renting a small RV (even though we know zero about RVs).

  11. Love the new yoga mat! I’ve had lots of good luck finding cool stuff on Etsy. It’ll be nice to have water sounds while you practice outside. I have not been in a large group setting yet. No plans to. No travel plans either. Probably not until we take our daughter back to school in August. That said, O’Hare is 97% less busy than usual so I suspect air travel would be ok.

  12. That yoga mat is beautiful! I’m still trying to work out what I feel comfortable with. So far, I’ve only been seeing the people in my house. BuT we may try individual outdoor get together with friends soon.

    1. We were surprised to find that a couple of our friends were back in town. They’d been living elsewhere a long time.

Unfortunately we can’t get together with them because he had a lung transplant, not to mention is also in his 70s, so obviously at higher risk. But they’re doing ok, so that was good to hear!

  13. Very pretty pattern on the skirt! There really aren’t any opportunities for getting in groups larger than 10 around here. Other than too many people shopping at Sam’s Club! My family is getting ready to go on a trip out west camping, and as far as I know, that is still a go. I feel like I will jinx it if I discuss it too much, so that’s all I’m saying 🙂

      1. Oh man, wouldn’t you know it – within hours of me typing that, I got a cancellation at one of parks!! Most private campgrounds are open, but the National park campgrounds are still closed. Time to search for Plan B (luckily just 2 nights of the trip). Doh!!

  14. That is a gorgeous yoga mat!

If I’m outside, I’m ok with people. Inside, not so much. I think we all have our own comfort zones, and that’s ok. Take your time.

You could not pay me to get on an airplane right now. Same goes for most other forms of public transportation. The recirculated air freaks me out on a good day, and I’m a terrible flyer for all I love to travel. I would need to be sedated to even get me in an airport at this point LOL.

  15. Gorgeous mat!! I love it! That’s a sweet picture of Bandit. I hope he is OK. I think I would be OK in a group but keeping our distance. But no traveling for me yet for a race. I am looking forward to “normal” in June. Is that too much to ask? 🙂
