Out & About: 6/15 – 21 WRD

Well, sort of out and about. We had to go to the bank this week, and I had to take Lola for a long overdue vet appointment. I could almost hear my car sigh with contentment for being driven.

Running Update

My fartlek trees

Tuesday: intention — recovery run + fartlek
I knew this was probably the last nice morning to run this week. I decided to head down towards the college, which was a good move because it’s shady down there and there’s a row of trees I love to use for fartleks.

I found that I my breathing quickly got out of control on the fartlek, so a little later when I used telephone poles for the same purpose I made sure the hard running portion wasn’t quite so hard. This was a nice, strong run.

I may have shared this rainbow already . . .

Thursday: intention — listen to breath to keep it easy, pay attention to foot turnover during strides
It wasn’t as humid as I feared, and I had nice cloud cover. Took the first 2.6 miles easy, then downhill strides. Today I focused on foot turnover. My cadence tends to be slow. Somehow I finally pushed my V02max up a point.

Sunday: intention — don’t worry about pace, more downhill training
I did a lot of things right for this hot run: I froze water in my water bottles. I wore my cooling towel. I didn’t care about pace. However, I also didn’t bring enough water (especially because I chose to walk the uphill, which is literally 2 miles). I would wet the cooling towel each mile, which helped, but I also tried wetting my visor — that dried so fast it wasn’t worth the water.

Plus I started too late, despite the fact that that’s the earliest I’ve started this year. Ah well, lessons learned. It wasn’t a horrible run all things considered, but it definitely took something out of me. It was 80F by the time I finished, and no clouds — not much shade, either, but I was grateful for every piece of shade I found! Not surprisingly, the V02max came back down a point. Frankly, I was surprised it wasn’t more!

That’s what we did with the firepit

Favorites of the week
We now have an inside fountain, a fountain on our raised deck where we often eat lunch (but not today!), and the firepit fountain is out by my Yoga platform. I love them all! You can view the firepit fountain in action in my latest YouTube video (a Down Dog tutorial) here.

The tshirt says “The Dogfather” (and no, I didn’t buy it for him); it was bath day, notice Lola cowering in the background on the right

Not loving: we had to go to the bank this week. We needed to get something notarized, in addition to straightening something else out. We got there and there was a masked security guard standing outside, which was a bit off putting. There was no hand sanitizer anywhere (except on the employee’s desk). There was also absolutely no attempt to clean between the people before us and us. Good thing Mr. Judy brought his own pen!

Seriously that can’t be comfortable

If you’re in the middle of a heatwave too, what’s your favorite way to stay cool? Right now I’m enjoying smoothies post run and smoothie bowls for breakfast.

Taken up any new hobbies? Seriously, I already have too many!

Did you find any good father’s day gifts for the men in your life?

Coming up on Tuesday: I’m sharing some of my favorite smoothie recipes on Tuesday. After my long run yesterday, I absolutely couldn’t face food — thank goodness for refueling with a smoothie! On Friday I’ll be joining the runfessional — it’s time to get a few things off my chest! Don’t forget that Skirt Sports is selling off its inventory, so check out the sale here — inventory & prices are decreasing!

  1. I think we’re gearing up for a heatwave here and today is the first day, lol. It’s so gross out with the three H’s – hazy, hot and humid!

That’s concerning about the bank 😦 I find that either business are super vigilant about hand sanitizer, masks, etc or they kind of do it half ass. I’ve just been going to supermarket so far which has been really good and I often feel safe because of all the measure in place.

  2. OH yes I always carry my own pen now! things that you never really thought about before. I also need to try to get out earlier to beat the heat. Maybe this will be the summer I finally do it!? Thanks for linking

  3. I was sad when Starbucks stopped making chocolate banana smoothies. Now I go to Stewart’s for an extra ice cream milk shake.

It’s been a hot weekend. But somehow yesterday the heat didn’t bother me much. I don’t even carry water.

I’ve been gardening and hiking more lately. They’re my summer hobbies.

I’d love a fountain in my new garden. You’re lucky Lloyd is handy.

    1. I would never have made it through my run sat without water. But it was much hillier and less shady where I ran than you did. MUCH hillier.

Your husband is also pretty handy. I’m sure he could make you a fountain, too (he’d just have to want to).

      1. Why would I torture myself with a hilly route??? 10 miles in the heat is hard enough.

No my hubby is not handy at all (except for fixing cars). I’m the one who fixes things around the house. I had to put up the bird feeder poll, put in the window screens, trim all the trees. I guess I could make a fountain lol

      2. I wasn’t suggesting you run where I did, just pointing out the differences. Although I don’t know why you’re torturing yourself with 10 miles in the first place.

I’m sure you could put a fountain together. I’m sure I could, but it would probably take months. I’m so not handy at all.

      3. You have to read my base about maintaining a base. 10 is my base.
If you run with friends it also becomes less torturous.

It’s my personal choice. I’m enjoying it.

Yes. There are easy ways to do a fountain. May try one. But next summer I’ll be back out working so it would be one summer thing. I want one for looks for my new garden.

    1. I’ve actually switched things up lately, especially as I’ve been getting out earlier & earlier to beat the heat — I’m just doing toast before my runs (except my long runs).

Although I have been having smoothie bowls for breakfast lately — run or no run — cause it’s so darn hot!

  4. Sounds hot, Judy!
Love all your runs with the intentions. I have started doing it and it definitely makes a difference to a run.
Love your water fountain! That must make a nice soothing sound as well.

    1. Oddly, I’m not a huge watermelon fan. But I do like a watermelon salad. I love the fountain!

He’s already on to the next . . . we’re having a slight disagreement about what to use for the base, although I didn’t ask for any more!

  5. I love your fountain! If that were in our back yard the raccoons would play in it and destroy it in no time. LOL

You’re right, that can’t be comfortable, but Lola (Lola, right?) looks quite content.

Bill and I don’t exchange MD or FD gifts, but our sons and the girls got him a new bell and a key clip (whatever that is) for his new bike.

    Have a great week, Judy!

  6. The heat is most definitely ON here. I am grateful I don’t have any pressure to run specific miles. Marathon training would be brutal. I don’t get my dad anything anymore. Just showing up for a visit is enough. The fountain is so fun!

  7. The water fountain looks nice and so welcoming! I bought the hubby a shirt for Father’s Day (kind of a camp/Hawaiian-type of shirt with American flags on it). He didn’t like how it fit, so the son tried it…he didn’t like it either. My dad didn’t think it would fit him…SO the daughter’s boyfriend wound up taking it home today LOL That was an interesting pass-around game 😉

  8. I’ve been having alot of smoothies lately too! Especially after a hot run. Thats frustrating that your bank experience wasn’t good. We ventured out to the pediatrician last week and that felt pretty safe (you’d hope so for a medical facility right?) but still just a weird experience

    1. The bank actually called today. My husband had mentioned the lack of cleaning between customers, but they didn’t say anything about it.

Normally we almost never have to set foot in a bank!

  9. The fountains are so cute! I bet they are so relaxing, especially out by your yoga platform.

I have to bathe the pugs this week, and I am dreading it. Delilah actually loves it, but the other two… Ugh.

It’s so weird going into places now. I just don’t like it.

    1. The dogs really do NOT enjoy baths, but they’re good about it. At least so far. Lola is getting more & more ornery as she gets older.

The fountains are very soothing! I really feel like I’m in a spa.

  10. I started thinking about hydration and heat solutions this past week – and used to freeze my water bottles too. that reminds me, I was going to get a few new handhelds. The temps are rising here too!

Wow I wouldn’t have liked that bank situation at all! I bring wipes, hand sanitiser and pens with me for everything! and my mask though we aren’t required to wear it.

I do like your running intentions. i’m going to shift my thinking too I think since this week starts marathon training (for a marathon that likely isn’t happening). I’m not really looking forward to it, but if I look at it in a different way, maybe that will help.

    1. It’s really tough to train for something when you’re not sure it’ll happen. Especially a marathon! I was doing it for a while with a half, but since it was about now, of course it was canceled.

Good luck! I can’t say the runs are terribly enjoyable right now. The weather is pretty ghastly.

  11. Smoothies are yummy! I am not creative and make mine with spinach, almond milk, and protein powder. Sometimes I add fruit depending on if I have any in the house

Ugh, it takes me a long time to cool down. After my run I come home and usually shower. I don’t use warm/hot water but once I get out and change, I am sweating again. Today I was having a Google Meet session with my students and I was sweating so much.

    That fountain is so pretty!

    1. Often I’m doing more exercise stuff after a run, so I usually just sponge off until I get the chance to shower later. Although it’s been so hot these days I am showering almost immediately afterward & it feels so good!

    1. Mr. Judy likes to be prepared. 🙂 Actually, I’m good at prepping for stuff in other ways that he’s not (like laying out clothes to get dressed in in the morning so I can get the dogs walked early because it’s so hot).

    1. It’s almost TX hot. So it’s great that I don’t need to put in a lot of miles. 😊

Some people aren’t great about social distancing here, either, but some are. All you can do is control what you do. Lucky that you work from home already, right? Stay safe, Liz!

  12. That’s interesting – I work at a bank, but in operations, and I haven’t had to go to our branch office. I’m not sure what they have going on with safety measures, but it sounds like they had more precautions at our KOA campground when we were checking in! The KOA had two containers of pens – clean, and used, for us to sign with. We just went shopping in Jackson Hole WY. I was happy to see all stores requiring masks. For a town like that, which probably had no COVID-19 to get a bunch of people from all over the country… I’d be taking precautions too! I’m glad we took our masks on vacation with us.

    1. All the employees (and the customers) were masked. It just kinda creeped me out that there was a couple in there, and then there was us in there — and nothing at all done in between us & them. My husband did give the bank feedback.
