Raindrops are falling on my head: 6/22 – 28 WRD

We had some really nice weather this week once it cooled down, so I was back outside as much as I could be.

Running Update

Today’s rainbow was my new suncatcher — it came from France!

Monday: intention — easy recovery run — like, super easy!
Although it didn’t feel easy, but it wasn’t horrible, either. I got out earlier, which helped, although of course not as early as I’d planned. I scratched the fartlek and slightly longer run idea in favor of bowing to the weather gods and just taking it easy. Considering the day’s high ended up being 93F, I think that was the right move!

Close up. The light was nice.

Wednesday: intention — pay attention to foot turnover during strides
I got out later than intended (what’s new) but that was mostly because I was debating between treadmill (potential for thunderstorms) and running outside. So glad I #optedoutside — the thunderstorms missed us, and with the cloud cover, it was almost pleasant.

I almost didn’t do the strides at the end; I heard a crack of thunder as I headed back home. I never heard more thunder, it didn’t seem to be darkening (although the wind picked up — which was actually nice!), and since I do them in front of my house, I felt fairly certain I could just head on in if need be. I did forget abut the foot turnover until the last two strides . . . oh well. Another decent run.

Another fountain in the works. It’s been changed, but there are some creative differences going on. Stay tuned.

Friday: intention — dry run for Virtual Firecracker 4
I learned from last week’s long run and took more water with me. I did a dry run for my virtual Fourth of July race (it might actually be the race, we’ll see).

1 mile warm up, 4 miles mostly downhill. Walked about 3 miles back up the very steep hills, then finished up with a 2 mile cool down. Not gonna lie, those last 2 miles were tough. Probably because it was 9 am already.

The weather was really nice for a change (which is why this might be the race I report). I pretended I was hiking in OR (my race would’ve been there yesterday, I would hopefully have met Laurie @ MeditationsinMotion). Ah well, it was not meant to be.
This run was pretty strong and pretty consistent. I didn’t push (well, maybe a tiny bit) but let the downhills carry me down. Right now the Fourth actually looks like good weather, but we all know how that can change!
Animal sightings: groundhog and maybe a bald eagle. I didn’t think it was big enough. I’ve never seen one this close to home. But it was quite large and it had a white head . . .

Lola likes to check out what’s going on on the Yoga platform.

Favorites of the week
I met up with a friend in my backyard again this week. Always good to chat with someone other than Mr. Judy!

Bandit likes to come out on the deck for lunch. He often gets some treats from our meal out there. But he likes to lay on the deck, too.
Drying out my Yoga mat

I practiced Yoga after I walked the dogs this morning. Rain was in the forecast, and yup, it sure did rain. But I chose the location of my Yoga platform wisely — it’s under a lot of tree cover. Yes, I got a little wet, but we don’t melt people! It felt great. Luckily the thunderstorms hadn’t started yet.

I did head on in for the reclined positions at the end, because my mat was getting pretty wet and I didn’t want to lay down on it. I’m still in the clothes I was wearing, 3 hours later — the Go Longer Skirt Sports skirts dry quickly! If you’re an XS or S, you’re in luck, they still have some in stock. I wear a S, but if you’re in between sizes I’d size up.

Is there a planned race you’re mourning right now?

Spending more time in your own backyard (if you have one)?

Ever done Yoga in the rain?

GWY Yin Yoga for Mindfulness

ICYMI: I titled this practice Yin Yoga for Mindfulness, obviously, but it is definitely a great practice for runners. It’ll help you get into the fascia that tightens up so much on us. And yes, it will help you really tune into your body, too. Watch it here. This is a longer practice, so if you’re getting rained on like we are, enjoy!

Coming up on Tuesday: It’s time to wrap up June. Friday it’s time to virtually gather over the tea/coffee pot. Don’t forget that Skirt Sports is selling off its inventory, so check out the sale here — inventory & prices are decreasing!

  1. The Firecracker 5K is probably my favorite race of the year and I’m sad that it’s virtual this year (and totally support it being virtual). I registered for it to support PR Races and a few of my friends may meet at the trail to do it socially distanced “together.”

I’ve never done yoga in the rain, but it sounds like it could be refreshing. Like you, I don’t think I’d like lying on the wet mat, though.

    Have a great week!

    1. I was kind of over our Firecracker (4th) race, I always said if it didn’t start so late & was a 5k, LOL! I signed up to support it. A friend signed up too, but we won’t run together.

I wasn’t getting soaked, so it was actually quite nice, although the mat did get a littler slippery, LOL!

  2. I am mourning like 10 races and many more to come. Oh well. There’s next year!.

I spend a lot of time in my yard but it’s weeding. Why do they grow so darn fast???

Never done yoga outside (except for maybe before a race) but plenty of wet hikes, runs and races. I am amazed that I didn’t get wet yesterday or today. But we have rain predicted for the next 3 days. Not sure if I can time those hikes right.

  3. I love your suncatcher, Judy! I have to admit, I’ve heard of dreamcatchers but I’ve never seen a suncatcher. Very cool.
I also like that you’re doing dry runs for your 4 July race. The weather will be perfect and you will crush it on the day. Because you know you’re going to run it ON THE DAY, right? 😉😃

  4. I’ve got a 4 July challenge as my friend Mary Ellen (who’s American) wanted to run a half marathon to raise funds for her school. So we’re doing it together – slowly. So hard building up distance at the moment, even though I’m doing decent miles per week.

  5. I love that new sun catcher – it’s so pretty!

Unfortunately the weather here this week was hot and humid, so I didn’t get outside too much, but I hope that it will be cooler this upcoming week.

Good luck on your 4th of July race!

    1. I hope you’re getting some cooler weather. We’re dancing between raindrops for most of the week. Right now it’s a pretty good thunderstorm — I got poured on this morning on the run (which felt nice), but thankfully no thunder.

  6. I’m loving that sun catcher 😉 I have a similar one, but (due to its color scheme) I have mine hanging in our downstairs bathroom (and not really getting any sunlight). My 4th of July race is on, but it’s a small one with limited registrations allowed this year (and no pre/post race happenings). Weather is looking like this current weekend…warm and muggy, but that’s typical for this time of year.

    1. For a time it looked like it would be really nice weather on the 4th — which basically never happens — now, not so much. Maybe even rain. Hopefully not, otherwise I’d do it and probably have my husband come pick me up so I don’t have to walk back.

    1. Thanks, Michelle!

I’m not sure I’ll really enjoy my virtual, but it’s a race I’ve enjoyed so I’m going to support them — I’d be running at some point this weekend anyway.

  7. Since I had no races scheduled since Bermuda in February, there’s no mourning here, except for my friends. The Donna 26.2 NEXT FEBRUARY already went virtual though. That gives me pause. When will racing ever return to normal?? Love the new sun catcher!

    1. I wasn’t mourning the race so much, but the vacation? Yes. Been far too long. Also don’t know when we’re going to see the MIL because that was part of what we were going to do.

They did run a local trail race this past weekend. I am actually kind of waiting to see what happens after people race, even with modifications.

  8. This week we had some nice mornings and I got to enjoy my coffee outside and worked for a few hours until the mosquitoes found me. I’m surprised at how early my neighbor’s lawn service comes though — 7:30 is a bit early to be hearing the buzz of the weed whackers. The sun-catcher is lovely!

  9. Awww! Puppies!

I have given up thinking about canceled races. I just can’t spend any more time thinking about them. Too bad because now I’m ready for a 5K LOL!

We have had some awful storms here, lately. Our fence almost blew down yesterday from the crazy wind!

    1. We’ve been having some thunderstorms (like, right now) but nothing too bad. It’s different down south.

What I really missed was the vacation. It’s been far too long for me (18 months) so I was REALLY looking forward to it. Oh well.

Sorry that there’s no 5k for you right now!

  10. I think the nice thing about virtual races is having the flexibility to do them when the weather cooperates! I’m doing a virtual stroller race the week of July 6th, but nothing for the 4th. Glad you were able to miss the thunderstorms on your run!

    1. I agree about the flexibility of virtual races! Good luck with your stroller “race”. I was thinking this morning that strollers would help with social distancing in a real race, LOL!

  11. I LOVE the suncatcher! Is it a chime as well?

I’m preoccupied enough now with clearing / packing / moving that I’m not mourning anything at the moment. I think I already mourned Chicago enough last year and I am certain the race will be cancelled anyway. I am not ever giving up on running but right now I feel very ok with what I’m doing. I have one virtual race coming up and after that we’ll see what happens.

this month kind of flew by, don’t you think?

    1. The suncatcher has chimes, but sadly they just don’t seem to catch the wind and chime — especially sadly because they make a lovely sound.

I wasn’t really mourning the race so much, but the vacation. It’s been far too long since I had any time away, and sadly I guess it’s going to be far to long until I do.

But I’m well, my friends & family are well — I’ll soldier on!

  12. Your suncatcher is beautiful!

I usually do a 4th of July race but not doing it this year nor a virtual one. I think I have 6 miles for Saturday?

A few races were cancelled but I got over them being cancelled. I am actually enjoying this time that I am running but not really training for any races.

We don’t go to the backyard but we do go outside to the balcony. I am so happy we have one since we can get some fresh air and we have another place to relax.

    1. I probably will be running on the fourth, if they’ve got the weather right. Crossing fingers it’s not humid. And I don’t have to start at 9!

I miss the vacation I was planning on. Big time! But I’ll survive.

A balcony is great. We’ve spent more time on our deck this year than we ever have. Until all the rain lately.
