Generator/Instant Pot to the rescue!: 10/5 – 11 WRD

Not running actually frees up some of my time. Yes, I’m walking more, but that doesn’t take as much pre- and post-routines (for me). Of course I could explore by running in the places I’m walking, but one problem I have is that I get so sweaty running that I can be uncomfortable post run if I have to drive a longer way home.

Running Update

TX was bluebonnets, NY is leaves

Week intention: Recovery
That was the intention, but the Mother Nature had something else in mind. Wednesday afternoon we had a really short, really severe storm pass through. We weren’t hit hard, but there were trees down all over the neighborhood.

We lost power for almost 3 days. Luckily we have a generator, but it doesn’t power everything, and it’s really loud — which made sleep difficult. Still I am very grateful for that generator — sleep would have been just as difficult without heat! Plus it powers our freezer & fridge. Most of my cooking was in the InstantPot or  Toaster Oven.

I hadn’t intended my running break to be quite this long, but the purpose was recovery, and I knew returning to running while really tired from sleep deprivation wasn’t in my best interest. There was lots of walking (and photos), though!

Started to take Lola on short walks; she was never happy being left behind!

Favorites of the week
The week started with a trip to mom with a stop at Olana first. I got to explore more trails. I definitely want to go sometime when I have even more time to explore!

We used this carrier above to carry Lola up the steps at Olana & to try to keep her calm while I visited with mom
It helped to keep her a *little* calmer

A short walk at a nearby nature trail

I took a solo walk at a nearby park & a little hike

10k walk/hike at Saratoga Spa State Park

Short walk with the dogs at one of my favorite (short) running trails

Today we visited a new place. May be the best place we’ve visited so far!

Lots of walking and Yoga, not much else. I wish I’d preloaded a few Peloton classes, but I didn’t. Plus . . . sleep deprivation most of the week, mom visit, vet visit for Lola . . . it was a busy work even without Wifi. I got in some amazing walks & lots of fall foliage, though!

How’re the leaves looking near you (if they turn)?

How do you cook without power?

What is one thing you’re proud you did this week?

ICYMI: I had several things almost ready to film, but there was the generator noise — and no way to upload. Uploading video take s a long time. I plan to get a new meditation up soon. Stay tuned.

Coming up on Tuesday: Not sure yet. On Friday I share part of why I took my running break. I actually wrote that for last Friday, but it wasn’t finished, and I don’t have unlimited data, so this Friday it will be. I’m obviously very far behind on commenting on blogs and returning comments! Thanks for your patience.

  1. wow did not realize that you had lost power for 3 days! Good thing the conditions were not too hot or cold. Good for you for taking a proper recovery week, Ended up taking a few days lower key myself. It does a body good

    1. Well, there would be no reason for you to know! I limited my online time since I don’t have unlimited data — we don’t usually lose Wifi with the power, but hey, it’s 2020, right?

It was a really local storm. And most people got power back a lot quicker.

    1. Without the generator it still would have gotten darn cold! Most of the days this week were in the 50s. Although yesterday had a high of 76.

It was a really short storm – maybe 15 minutes, but it did a huge amount of damage.

  2. Glad you got your power back. Having a generator is essential in times like this.

That last trip looks like Landis Aboretum. Am I inspiring you with my hiking trip places?

Fall colors are especially beautiful this year.

Proud that I hiked 10 miles on the Adirondacks today after 10 miles running yesterday. With rain predicted the next 2 days I’ll have time to rest. Maybe lol

    1. Nope, I came across that while researching somewhere to go on route 20.

It’s easier to put in a generator when you move someplace new. We always talked about it on TX & never did it. We lose power fairly regularly here unfortunately.

      1. Ours is a generac. Comes on (and off) automatically. Because Lloyd didn’t think I could handle having to start one. Fine by me. We saw lots of the other kind crop up all over the neighborhood this week.

      2. That’s what my hubby wants. But not worth it since we hardly ever lose power. Someone down the street has a generac. Yes. It is noisy. No thanks.

      3. We lose power more frequently than most of the neighborhood. Although oddly enough we got power back about half a day before the rest of the block. It’s usually the other way around.

It is definitely noisy. But so are the little ones — I think they’re actually noisier. We got to hear them all walking the dogs.

      4. Ours is quite big (though we have a small portable one on our boat) and it is not noisy at all. Doesn’t matter anyway. Besides those 15 minutes of wind, the weather was nice this week. Wish I could bottle it.

  3. So sorry about the power loss! We used to lose power all the time but now we’re on some ‘smart grid’ that switches us to another source when we lose power. We do have a generator but it only powers 3 things at a time. It used to get a lot of use!

  4. Well, I know the routine of losing power for an extended length of time (quite recently, actually LOL). Thankfully, the weather was cooler than normal for those nine days, and we were able to grill out most days. Funny how you learn to adapt and make do, right? All of your walks look nice! OUr trees just started turning this past week, almost overnight.

  5. How annoying to lose power for 3 days! I bet it helped alot of have a generator. I lost power for like 10 minute a few weeks ago and it knocked out my wifi while I was presenting for work. I have no idea how I would work from home without power. All your fall pictures are so pretty!

  6. Yikes on the power outage — thank goodness you have a generator. We don’t, but probably should consider it since going into the office to recharge things or shower in the gym isn’t an option these days!

Looks like you’ve got pretty fall colors there already!

  7. Oh man, I didn’t know the storm was that bad up by you – so sorry that you lose power for almost half of the week – thank goodness for the generator! We had a lot of wind here but not too much rain.

I’m so jealous that you have the Fall foliage already! Our leaves haven’t changed that much yet.

    1. We really didn’t have that much rain either, but there was wind & thunder & lightning. In fact, i’d just started to film a video & thought I could just soldier on, but that’s right when the power went off, LOL!

I’m kind of surprised yours haven’t changed that much yet, you’re not that far away. Yup, we’re about at peak. So I’m trying to really enjoy it.

  8. I had no idea about the power loss. So sorry to hear that. Thank goodness for the generator. I lost power for a few hours on the first day of school. That was a disaster but I survived. 🙂

The trees here have beautiful color of leaves. I love it. Fall is my favorite season.

  9. That power loss was insane! I’m glad you are back on track.

Love your hikes and mom visits. I’m sure Lola enjoyed her little outings. Delilah gets very anxious when out and about. I remember once we had to take her several hours in the car (we were trying to get ahead of a hurricane) and I didn’t think she was going to make it! The doggy tranquilizers didn’t begin to touch her nerves 😦 I bet your mom appreciates her doggo visitors too.

    1. Lola has gotten worse as she’s gotten older. Bandit will just lay on someone’s lap. Lola won’t settle on leash. We’ve tried all sorts of things, but nothing really seems to help. Which is part of why I usually go on my own.

I’m planning to take a road trip for our anniversary next week, and we pretty much have to take them. I think we’ll be okay as long as we stop a few times. It’s actually shorter than going to my mom.

  10. What lovely photos. But sorry about the outage – I’m glad you’ve got a generator and an insta-pot but that’s hard work. Hope you manage to recovery some sleep and running tiredness – esp by now as I’m so late on reading blogs this week!

    1. Hey, I never did get to the blogs I missed during the power outage. Sometimes you just have to move on!

Very glad for the generator. Not the first time it’s been used for more than a few hours, too. Thanks, Liz!

  11. Your pictures from your walks are lovely and your trees are a little ahead of ours. What a bummer about losing power after the storm. My parents used to have a partial generator, but as they got older they replaced it with a whole-house generator. It was a great move especially since my mom is alone now and they lose power so frequently in that area.

I love the picture of your sweet pups!
