Commencement: 1/25 -31 WRD

As in let the runs commence. A little, anyway. For much of January we had decent Winter running. Not too cold (mostly), not to snowy (mostly). Unfortunately I also wasn’t feeling up to running. Naturally now that I am, we’ve already had snow & bitter cold & a Nor’Easter maybe on the way — my return to running commenced with treadmill runs.

Running Update

Just a wee bit chilly (and windy)

Friday Intention: take it easy!
I took to the treadmill — see the temps above! — and figured I’d do an easy 2 miles. Peloton really doesn’t have easy or recovery run as an option, so I just chose a progression run and kept my pace slow. It actually felt pretty good, but I started to feel tired (I didn’t take any walk breaks!) at 1.5 miles so I called it quits there. I didn’t even break a sweat!

I suppose I could have chosen a run/walk workout, but I’m happy with my choice.

Sunday Intention: easy + a little further?
While it’s a little warmer, 11F is hardly warm. I did go a little further (not much!), I kept the pace slow, and I discovered Peloton does have a few recovery runs. That darn lack of a search feature! Anyway, I found some, I did one, and I just adjusted to my needs. I broke a tiny sweat, LOL! And there were no DOMs from my first run a couple of days before.

Favorites of the week
My sister has pulled the plug on the FL move. A long story. They still plan to move, but not in 2021 (although who really knows?). While I feel badly for her, I have to admit it takes a huge weight off my shoulders.

Somehow I missed season 3 of Outlander on Netflix, and season 4 was recently released. I’m set for what to watch for a while. I’m a huge fan of the series (as in the books).

Did you read the Outlander books, or get introduced to it on Netflix?

Obsessed with time travel themed books/movies? I always have been!

What is your favorite genre to read? Not sure I have a favorite. I’m open to most things!

GWY Yin Yoga Ahimsa (1)

ICYMI: This longer Yin Yoga practice is going to help you get into everywhere a runner needs to get into! We’ll also be focusing on loving kindness, or the Yama Ahimsa. You’ll find the video here.

Coming up on Tuesday: I’m recapping January. There wasn’t much running, but there was still a fair amount of movement. Friday I’ll be grabbing some hot chocolate & meeting up virtually with some other bloggers here — join us!.

  1. I was going to mention that there are recovery runs in Peleton but I forgot. I am not enamored with the program but maybe it will grow on me.

Glad you are feeling better. Outside running in the cold temps is not as bad as you think. The first step outside is the hardest.

Have not watched Outlander. trying not to get sucked into TV (it’s easy when it is cold out) and walk every night instead.

I love to read – all kinds of books…lately mostly mysteries because I have a co-worker who gives them to me.

      1. And I don’t have a treadmill (by choice). Of course it takes much less time (and layers) but it doesn’t have all the benefits of fresh air, views, friends.

  2. Glad you found some recovery runs to try.So happy to read that you are feeling better and returning to running. I bet it is hard to venture out in those temps! WE have been in the 20’s which is cold for us but I am liking it. Have not watched Outlander yet may check it out

  3. My sister Erin loves Outlander- I only watched a few of the first season, but should give it another chance…especially now when there isn’t a ton of new stuff to watch, ha!

Glad you are feeling better and building back to running again!

  4. I’ve heard great things about Oulander. It’s on my “series to watch list” on Netflix!

I am SO not looking forward to the Nor’Easter coming our way. It’s supposed to start tonight and go into tomorrow and may give us 12-18 inches of snow – ugh!

  5. I runfess I am quite enjoying my treadmill right now. We get outside to walk so I’m content to run on the mill. We watched most of the first episode of Outlander (because I’ve heard from so many that it’s good) but the Caveman could not continue and he turned it off. Maybe I’ll revisit it on my own.

  6. So funny that Bandit has to be dragged on a walk…I thought all dogs loved walks until I saw an owner pulling a collie down the sidewalk yesterday. I didn’t realize that there were dogs like that, lol! Glad to hear you’re back to feeling more energetic again. Hopefully February will be a better month for you.

    1. Bandit LOVES to walk. But not in snow — or single digits with wind. We did do a short walk today — it was 11F but not too much wind. My hands hurt even though I was wearing my warmest gloves — the ones that are usually too warm!

  7. Glad to hear you’re running again! I actually like the treadmill when I’m first getting back into it- that way you can always stop if you don’t feel good- as opposed to finding yourself two miles from home and not wanting to run anymore.
-9… oof. No wonder your dog doesn’t want to walk!

    1. Actually he’s been walking the last couple of days & it’s been super cold! Another potential snowstorm today so probably no walk tomorrow.

I don’t mind the treadmill. Glad I have one as an option!

  8. My hubby really likes Outlander, but it’s a tough one for me (all the blood, etc.). Glad things are feeling better and the runs are inching back 😉 Knock wood, we’ve only had a couple of times where the feels-like has plummeted sub-ZERO, but Winter is far from over. Just getting through January feels like a small victory to me!

    1. January really wasn’t too bad weather-wise. Feb is showing up & doing what feb usually does.

My husband er isn’t the least bit interested in Outlander. I watch it by myself! My brother liked it, though.

  9. I’m glad you are able to let go of some worry.

I got through about four or five of the Outlander books before I found them getting a little TOO far-fetched. I watched maybe two seasons of the show. I loved The Time Traveller’s Wife (the book, though the movie is ok), and About Time (the movie), in the time travel realm.

My favorite genre is … historical fiction, maybe? I like really long, really complicated, and not necessarily happy fiction. I mean, truth be told I’ll read almost anything if there are words, but I don’t prefer light or fluffy, self-help/growth, or super formulaic romance/mystery.

  10. I’ve not read or watched Outlanders. My favorite type of books are historical novels and Issac’s Storm is one of my favorites. Remember last week when I said that I wouldn’t mind being a meteorologist? I guess it all ties in, right?

It’s great that you’re feeling like easing back into running, but those temps? Yikes! Hope you don’t get pummeled by the storm headed your way. It went easy on us, in fact, it underperformed and was somewhat of a disappointment.

  11. 90 minutes of yoga. Wow. I can barely do ten. But maybe it will happen this go around for me.
I wanted to like Outlander but couldn’t get into it despite going to two costume exhibits here and LA for (I think) seasons 1 and 2. Have you read / watched A Discovery of Witches? You might like it, although the bulk of the time travel is confined to the second book.

    1. I don’t normally do much longer than 60 minutes but it was part of a course I’m taking. Better to do smaller more frequently than one long class — much like running!

I did read the All Souls Trilogy. Those were some looooong books (but so is the Outlander series).

  12. It sucks that Peloton doesn’t have a search feature. You’d think that by now they would have improved the app.

With those temps it is a good thing you have a treadmill.

I have never watched Outlander but will check it out.

  13. I am glad you have a treadmill so you can run inside. We don’t have a treadmill and we got walloped with a winter storm yesterday and today. YakTrax will be used for the foreseeable future!

I am not familiar with Outlander but Bill and I are currently in search mode for something new to watch. I will check it out!

    1. Well, one thing to know about Outlander is there’s sex and a lot of it. I actually don’t think there needs to be so much (even though the books have a lot) but that’s what Netflix does.

I am happy to have a treadmill. It doesn’t bother — at least not at first. 🙂 It can get a bit old (because the cold just continues!).

  14. Of course when you want to run Mother Nature takes that decision right outta your hands!!

I don’t know outlander at all. I am not sure I have a favourite genre, but I do know I used to read a lot of crime books. But also when I read more if someone recommended a good book to me I would likely pick it up.

    1. Well, I can certainly run. Outdoors, even (although there are days I personally don’t recommend that) — but even though I’ve done plenty of hard runs in nasty weather, without a race to train for to me it just doesn’t feel right.

I’m lucky, I guess, that I have lots of pursuits.

Interesting — crime books. I don’t think I would’ve pegged you for that!
