Chocolaterunsjudy in 5 words

Been reading this blog for years? Do you think you know me? Do you really know me? Can I really describe myself in just five words? I’ll share some takeaways for you, too.

CRJ1

Persistent
There was a time in my running “career” that I ran quite a few halfs at basically the same finish time. While I’ll never be a fast runner, I had a deep conviction inside that there was a fast-er runner inside of me.

So I ran, and I trained, and I raced. Then one year I had my breakthrough year where I ran 4 halfs , each one faster than the last.

Takeaway:   training always pays off — but on its own timetable

CRJ

Consistent
I am very consistent, unless I’m sick or injured. I run, however many days a week feels right to me. I run in bad weather. I run on the treadmill. I’ve always said consistency is my super power — I show up and do the work.

Takeaway: consistency always pays off, just like persistence!

Introverted
I am shy when I first meet people, although sometimes that also causes me to talk too much from nervousness. I’ve also led groups (weight watchers, yoga, meetups for designers) — I can do it, but being “on” is very draining for me. So it might surprise you that I actually do love running in a group. I turn into a real chatty cathy!

Takeaway: don’t judge a book by its cover. Or someone you’ve just met  (or while you’re running together).

Laser Focused
If it’s something I’m interested in? I go all out. I pour my heart and soul into the things I love. The things that don’t interest me? Let’s just say I know I need to do those things, but sometimes I struggle with motivating myself.

Takeaway: sometimes that laser focus gets in the way of the things that have to get done

Open to New Ideas
I love trying stuff! Food. Clothes. Styles of Yoga. Ways to train for running. I actually think this is another of my super powers when it comes to running. It keeps it fresh, anyway! I think the worst thing a runner can do is run the same distance on the same route day after day. Shake it up! Keep what works and throw out what doesn’t. Always have a beginner’s mind — be willing to try and learn new things.

Takeaway: it’s a super power and a curse — because sometimes trying new things costs $$$

What do you think? Do you feel as though you know me a little better now? What words come to mind when you think of me? What words did you — or would you — use to describe yourself? As a runner? As a person? What are your super powers?

  1. I would have described you with those words!
And I would have added “reflective”. As shown in this post by the takeaways, you always dig a little deeper and highlight particular facets.

I didn’t know that about your half-marathons or that you are chatty when running in a group!

    1. Reflective is a good one, Catrina, thank you for adding that! I’ve always been a thoughtful person (not so sure thoughtful of other people, not as much as I should be, but introspective).

Running makes me extroverted — it’s very weird, really!

  2. I 100% agree with the 5 words you selected for yourself 🙂

It’s interesting because as I’m reading the blogs this morning, you are the 3rd person to use introvert. I consider myself an introvert as well. People would probably think that bloggers are more extroverted, but that’s really not the case!

    1. The funny thing about being an introvert is I’m not when I’m in a running group — not usually. Not while running, before & afterwards maybe.

      Those endorphins. 🙂

Actually, I think that blogging is my way to get things out into the world!

  3. It seems a lot of runners are introverts. I guess that’s why we chose a mostly solo sport. I like the words you chose, I do see that in you through your blog. I agree with Catrina, reflective is also a good word for you.
I try to be open to new ideas but I am definitely a creature of habit.

    1. That’s true, Wendy, but I can be spontaneous too. Starting running was a whim pretty much. I’ve definitely had races I signed up for spontaneously too, but I general, yes, I put a lot of thought into my choices.

  4. Your words are all spot-on, but I’d also add “caring” to the mix 😉 I’ve seen the way you care for you mother (and you father, before he passed), and it’s no secret how much you love your fur kids ❤ Also, the fact that you're sharing so much with your yoga practice demonstrates how much you care about the well-being of others.

    1. A couple of people mentioned that. Which I found really amusing because I don’t feel that way much! Some of the things I’ve done in my life, sometimes putting myself out there — that’s not easy for me at all!

  5. I am not at all surprised that you are persistent and consistent! I am also an introvert. Isn’t it funny that introverts can still have blogs and put so more information out for everyone to read? 🙂

  6. I think “open to new ideas” is a superpower not just for running, but for life in general! All five of your words taken together are a perfect recipe for success. Thanks for sharing!
