Cookie Monster: 7/19 – 7/25 WRD

The subject will be revealed under favorites. It has been a lot of back and forth with mom, as I suspected it would be last week, and the rehab closed to visitors on Tuesday because of a non-COVID upper respiratory infection going around. I had already gone there, was going to leave from there to go home — well, I did, but without being able to visit.

My sister was finally able to visit in the lobby for a short time on Friday. The plan was to go down this Tuesday because there’s a meeting with the social worker, but that will depend on if I can go to it. Even if I can’t stay to visit, I’d like to go for the day to hear what they have to say. Time will tell.

Running Update

Good advice

Tuesday Intention: just run
It was a slog out there today and that’s okay. There was haze from the Western Wildfires, it was very humid — not really that warm, but just humid. I was in no rush and my pace showed that. I tried to capture the orange sun but it wouldn’t show up in photos.

I find there tends to be less to take photos of in Summer; these berries caught my eye on my longer run

Thursday Intention: go longer but easy
Does 5 miles really equal a long run? Well, it was longer than my longest run last week. I was blessed with a day with low humidity, finally. I definitely took it easy. I also got out a bit later than I probably should in Summer, and it was quite sunny, but the temps and the humidity were lower than we’ve seen for a while. So close to negative splits, but the last mile was slower, although not the slow-est.

Friday Intention: easy recovery
Same as I wonder if 5 miles should really be called a long run, although of course when I started to run it definitely qualified for me!, I wonder if a 5 mile long run needs recovery miles. My body seems to enjoy it, though, so I continue to do them. Plus I needed to get back to walk Bandit, so keeping it short was important. Negative splits again. Oops! Here I thought I was keeping that second mile slower.

Not too exciting — but wait, there’s more!

Favorites of the week
I met a friend for a cool down walk from her run and to wander one of the local farmer’s markets. We get a veggie box, and it’s a lot of veggies, so there wasn’t much I needed in that department.

I was on the lookout for a cookie for dessert.

What’s that hiding inside, you ask?

This was more like a brookie: a brownie/cookie combo and it was delish. So fudgy. Mr. Judy and I split it.

Why yes, it’s marshmallow

Why yes, it’s marshmallow. Mr. Judy isn’t quite as into chocolate as I am, but he liked it too — it just probably wouldn’t have been his choice. It wasn’t what I was looking for, but sometimes you get what you need?

Speaking of getting what you need, being home almost the entire week. Cooler weather. An end to the rain! Sometimes it’s the little things. Right now I have no idea if I’ll be home next week or spending part of the week with my mom again.

GWY Turn Overwhelm into Gratitude MeditationMeditation

ICYMI: As you might imagine the last couple of weeks have been overwhelming on many different levels. I found one solution for that, which I’m sharing in today’s 15 minute meditation.  Check it out here. There are also two short vlogs that go with the meditation:  here and here.

Coming up on Tuesday: Since I covered reasons to run in groups last week, this week it’s reasons to run solo. On Friday it’s time to come clean with Marcia @ MarciasHealthySlice and runfessions.

  1. Continued healing thoughts going your mom’s way. That’s tough when they have to ban visitors. I’ve taken SO many smoky sun pics and rarely do they ever look anywhere as nice as IRL. That is one hella fine looking cookie. I was contemplating marshmallow cream on my frozen custard the other night but did not succumb to temptation.

    1. Yeah, sorry for the food porn. 🙂 Sometimes you just gotta have it, LOL!

Thanks Marcia. We still need good thoughts for sure.

You can visit now, but only in the lobby or outside. I’m not sure if she can have more than one visitor (aka both my sister & I). She gets uncomfortable in the wheelchair, though, so the visits can’t be as long as they were inside and I can’t advocate for her when the nurses don’t come. 😦

  2. My parents had that horrible URI. I just read somewhere that our immune systems are ‘rusty’ after a year of masking, so everything is so much worse. I hope your mom avoids it and continues to recover. Hang in there. Having older parents is sure tough–I just spent a week with mine and it was mentally exhausting!

    1. Luckily the URI was in a different part of the facility. In addition to the rehab (the same one my dad was in a couple of times), there’s a nursing home and an adult daycare. So it’s a large place.

  3. Sorry you are facing so many challenges with your mom’s recovery. I hope you can see her when you have that meeting. I’m looking forward to the days when I can do a 5 mile long run again. 😉

Honestly, nothing satisfies my chocolate cravings better than a Starbucks brownie. It’s just perfection!

    1. Hopefully you’ll get back to 5 miles (and more) soon!

Funny, the friend I met with yesterday said pretty much the same thing about Starbucks brownies. Luckily I never go to Starbucks. 🙂

I’ve been wanting to bake my own cookies, but time has been at a premium. Don’t know how you did all you did when you were traveling so much!

  4. I laughed when you said end to the rain. As I sit in my car watching a down pour. I guess I’m getting wet.

I find many more interesting things to photograph in the summer when I run.

My long run this week may be 3 miles and I’m training for a Sept 4 hm. Not stressing though.

Hope you get to see your mom this week.

  5. that must be so frustrating for all of you that you can’t visit with your mom right now. Hopefully, that will clear up soon. I try to motivate myself on these hot summer runs by finding fun things to photo. Hope you have a great week

    1. Hmm, you reminded I haven’t run toward the college in a while. Not that there’s much to photograph there, but it just a different route. 🙂

We can visit again, but only in the lobby or outside so far. It’s a long way to go for a short visit, but I’m still planning on that next week.

  6. Sorry things are so challenging with your mom! I hope you can visit her soon. That dessert looks amazing! And any break from the heat and humidity feels so good these days.

    1. Well, today was humid AF & I don’t use that lightly, LOL! It wasn’t hot, but even walking Bandit after the rain stopped late morning was really uncomfortable! I was so glad I wasn’t running today!

  7. i like the message on your teabag! I’m stealing that for myself this week. 🙂
Love the closeup shots of the cookie- I would have taken pictures of that one too!
Hope your mom continues to improve, and I hope you get some more good runs in to relieve the stress this week.

  8. I hope that you’re able to go up on Friday to meet with the social worker and hopefully visit your mom too. I understand why they have restrictions with visitors but it makes it so much harder on the family when all you want to do is visit. Continuing to send your mom and family positive thoughts and prayers.

That cookie looks delicious! I’m not even a huge chocolate fan but I would definitely enjoy that!

    1. We still don’t get into their room, but we can visit in the lobby or outside. It does mean a much shorter visit, typically, because she gets very uncomfortable in the wheelchair. And it’s supposed to be 90 there (not up here) tomorrow. 😦

I understand it too, and if this had happened 6 months ago we probably wouldn’t have been able to visit at all, plus she doesn’t have a smartphone. So I’m grateful that things are a little better now.

  9. Sounds like you had a good week. The lower temps and humidity for a few days was a nice bonus for you. I’m sorry that they aren’t allowing you to visit your mom right now. That is so hard on everyone. I hope that changes soon and that she is doing well. That cookie looks delicious!

      1. I’m glad you at least get to see her. Looks like they could make an exception since it sounds like she needs you in order to get better and eat. I know they want, because everyone would complain, but still… I hope the restrictions ease soon and she gets better and able to go back home soon.

  10. Continuing to send positive thoughts to you and your family ❤ I'd love to figure out a way to capture the beautiful sun (and moon) on my phone camera…they never look as impressive in pics.

    1. Thanks so much Kim. I really appreciate it & we still really need positive thoughts.

Sometimes I play with the filters, but that sun just didn’t show up at all! It was such a vivid orange so that was really weird.

  11. so sorry about the non-visitation. that really sucks. I will keep thinking of you and your family and hoping for the best.

by the way, we define our own long runs and recovery runs. if 5 miles is long for you, it’s a long run. goodness knows I haven’t run 5 miles in absolute yonks. that would be a long run for me.

I really think you need to see how much shipping is to NL or those treats… 😀

    Liked by 1 person

    1. I’m not sure it’d stand up to the shipping, but I’m sure it could be arranged. Although I don’t plan to be eating that again soon!

Thanks for the well wishes, Renee. We appreciate it!

  12. Not a huge marshmallow fan, but that looks delicious.
Can you zoom/FT for the social worker visit if you’re not allowed in
Long is all relative, so that’s absolutely a long run

    1. I’m not really a huge marshmallow fan either, but I do love smores (not that this was remotely like a smore).

We can be on the phone with the social worker. I do plan to go tomorrow even if it’s a short visit. She said she had to get permission from the nurse manager for us to be there, although they had called my sister to reconfirm with her last week. Weird.

I have a feeling 5 miles are definitely going to be it for a while. There is no training, and no reason to torture myself unless I feel like running longer (and have the time).

  13. I am thinking of your mom and hope you can visit with her, at least in the lobby. That has to be so hard.

That cookie looks good. Cookies aren’t my most favorite thing, but I would eat that.

    1. Cookies are one of my favs!

Thanks, we were able to go to the meeting & then visit in the lobby. Unfortunately she just gets uncomfortable in the wheelchair quickly so we can’t visit for long.
