Just Keep Moving: 10/4 – 10 WRD

As I work on this intro, it’s Friday. At least this week I know what sidelined me! I was at my mo. The week went south from there with all sorts of stressful stuff. Getting older just ain’t fun, and caring for the elderly can sometimes make you feel ancient too!

I’m joining Kim @ Kimrunsonthefly and Deborah @ Confessionsofamotherrunner, and sharing a surprisingly active week although light on running and strength training, but I knew going in that would probably be the case.

Workouts update

  • Monday: Yoga (30 min), 3 miles easy
  • Tuesday: Yoga (20 min), Walk AM & PM, took mom to the doctor
  • Wednesday: Yoga (50 min), AM Walk, 3 mile hike at Olana on the way home
  • Thursday: Yoga, (50 minutes), Dogwalk AM, PB Toning Walk (25 min)
  • Friday: Yoga (45 min), 5.32 mile long-er run, Dogwalk PM, Yoga (20 min)
  • Saturday: Yoga (20 min), Dogwalk AM, 2 mile recovery run, PB Cardio + ST (25 min)
  • Sunday:  Yoga (45 min), Dogwalk

Running Mileage: 10.32  (-.68)

Running Update

Yes, Fall is almost in full swing

Monday Intention: get in some miles before the rain
This was the type of morning I usually would have run on the treadmill. I can’t get in 3 miles on the treadmill, so I headed out hoping I could stay dry and I did. It rained most of the rest of the day, though (while I was driving, of course).

Not sure what these wildflowers are (they look like miniature asters); probably some invasive species cause they’re EVERYWHERE on this path. Pretty, though.

Friday Intention: go long-er
The boots I wore while at my mom’s (which aren’t new or high heels or narrow and I’ve worn many times before comfortably) caused the top of my foot to be painful again. I didn’t run while I was down there (never planned to anyway), and added an extra rest day because I need it after a visit.

This run was relatively good. A tiny bit humid. I was a little overdressed, but not too bad, and I ditched the vest I was wearing during the last mile. The standout from this run were the two huge herons (I think that’s what they were). One was white and I saw it flying in the distance; the other was dark and nearly landed on my head! Even the walkers behind me commented on how big it was. Wish I could’ve grabbed my phone quickly enough to catch some photos!

Saturday Intention: recover
Warmed up walking Bandit, then out for an easy 2 miles. Tried to keep it slow, it certainly felt slow, but was just a tiny bit faster than a recovery run should be. During the Summer this was often my easy pace — and slower. So slow progress.

Favorites of the week
Most of the time I stop at Olana on the way to my mom, but it was raining, sometimes pretty heavily, on the way down. She plays bridge on Wednesdays, so I left “early” — which gave me more time to walk around and finally get to the end of one trail I’ve only been able to do partway before.

Now for something completely different — I looked up the symbolism of herons:

Tranquility and stillness

That second one spoke to me! I am definitely wading right now, and of course there were literally marshes on either side of the running path sometimes. Tranquility & Stillness? Not so much!

I met up with a friend I haven’t seen in a while yesterday afternoon & we had a great chat, even if it was chilly out. Normally I would have suggested a walk, but I was pooped! My foot feels fine now, too. Weird!

I do not see the stress dying down anytime soon, my mom’s live in aide has given notice . . . but in the good news department, there are no doctor’s appointments, at least not ones we have to take her to until November.. Of course by then I could be on a jury . . . 

Except after I wrote the above she wasn’t feeling well yesterday and wants to see the cardiologist (which I just took her to) again. Oy! I highly doubt she’ll get an appointment, but maybe I can convince her to try telemedicine, which I know the office has.

GWY Shoulder Release

ICYMI: I’m on a roll with body-specific Yoga lately! There’s a tiny bit of myofascial release in the beginning of this video, and then we loosen up and release tension from our shoulders while also strengthening them. I don’t know about you, but I tend to store a lot of stress there!

  1. I wonder about my neck “hiding” the pent-up stress (apparently I’m in denial to even have stress because I don’t notice its presence LOL). The two times I’ve been to the chiro (I went last week, as well as about two months ago), he worked on my neck and shoulders. UGH! Not a fun place for popping and cracking…but I guess it needed it (?).

    1. It’s not usually my neck, but I know that stress tightens my upper back. It’s always all knotted pretty much no matter what I do.

      No denial of stress here. It was a really hard week. But the good news is my mom actually feels better this morning, so at least I can feel that we did the right thing by not taking her to the ER.

  2. Ugh, that is stressful. Glad your mom is feeling better though. Also glad your foot is feeling better. Weird how these things pop and and then just vanish (sometimes.) I REALLY hope you don’t end up on a jury!!! Maybe you can get excused if you tell them you have to take care of your mom.

  3. Ugh, sorry about all the stress. I’m glad you carved out some time to meet up with a friend. Breaks like that can make all the difference. I hope you find a new aide for your mom — I presume she will need some help like that for a while?

    So many houses in my ‘hood have Halloween lights up — orange lights, illuminated ghosts, ghosts and bats projected on their garage doors — walking Scooby at night can be quite spooky. 😉

    1. I think my mom’s going to need an aide for the rest of her life. But yes, it was great to get together with my friend because we haven’t seen each other in quite some time!

      I’m not out at night, so I don’t know if anyone has Halloween lights up. But there are plenty of decorations!

  4. Sorry for the stress and the problem you had at your foot, however you have run and this is important.
    I don’t remember the last time I didn’t have problem in my shoulder and neck: stretching and PT help but don’t solve the situation.

  5. Glad to hear your mom is feeling better.

    My feet have been fine for months and then during my half it hurt the whole race. Wore the same shoes for my long run yesterday and it felt fine…go figure.

    Stress is what keeps me awake at night…ugh! At least running keeps me sane.

    1. I actually sleep pretty good most of the time. Except at my mom’s. Since I sleep on a couch, it’s warm, and she has all these clocks ticking & chiming, plus she’s coughing . . . I could sleep at my sister’s but that would add a lot more driving.

      It is very weird how things can be on again & off again with our bodies.

  6. I feel like everyone is really stressed right now. Work has been tough–lots of anxious, needy parents and kids. It’s a sign of the times, I guess. Glad you have ways to manage it.

  7. Dealing with an aging parent is stressful and I completely understand where you’re coming from.

    We have a great blue heron that live in the creek behind our house. I get mesmerized standing at my kitchen window watching him wade through the water while hunting for fish. And yes, they are huge birds with an incredible wing span.

    That’s hilarious about the rattling corn husks and then a squirrel popping out!

  8. Sorry things have been so stressful for you lately. I’m glad your foot seems to have calmed down. It’s crazy how things suddenly crop up only to disappear again. The blue herons here LOVE wading right during the storms. I’ll bet the wind and rain churn up the fish they eat.

    1. Interesting about your observations of the herons & storms. I do see them at that path sometimes. Just never so close! I’m not quite sure that’s what it was, as it happened so fast, but I think it was.

    1. Thanks, Shathiso. Well the aide was hired through an agency, so there getting a new one isn’t that big a struggle.

      Yes, meeting up with my friend was good! I just haven’t been around much lately unfortunately.

    1. Oooh, very nice to have a lake near your house! Although with the mosquitoes this summer, maybe not. Usually they’re not so bad here, but we got so much rain it’s been bad.

      Then it cooled off and I was no longer having problems — until today, when I was trying to sit by a lake after my run, LOL! That didn’t last long.

    1. Well, the aide shouldn’t be too hard to replace. Whether or not she likes a new one better — then again, there’s more to that story & waiting to see how it all develops. 😦

      I don’t decorate. My mom always did, but I just didn’t inherit that gene!

  10. I was surprised at some of the humidity we had this week too, and then I heard about the humidity in Chicago yesterday for the marathon – yuck!

    Such a stressful time for you Judy 😦 I continue to keep you and your family in my thoughts and prayers. I hope that your mom starts to feel better soon.
