Getting the most out of Fall: 11/8 – 14 WRD

Unfortunately the storm clouds were metaphorically (and literally!) moving in again this week, although the actual weather was mostly quite nice — except Friday & Saturday, maybe this evening. There were definitely some bright spots to the week, though!

Running Update

Of course there’s fungi

Thursday Intention: go long-er with a fast finish
Yup, it’s Thursday and it’s my first run of the week. I’ve been feeling run down off & on over the last couple of weeks, no doubt due to stress, so after our hike on Monday I took it easy. I deliberately wore my “slow” shoes today. I ran slower, too, but don’t know if that’s really due to the shoes or just how I’m feeling.

This run wasn’t really good or bad, and I did decide to pick up the pace for approximately the last mile. Otherwise it was quite consistent. I wanted to get it done before the 100% rain on Friday, plus the uncertainty of whether or not I might have to go down to my sister or my mom this weekend.

Interesting sky. It poured later in the day—even some thunder!

Saturday Intention: easy with a little cadence work
My plan was to do a recovery mile on Friday — on the treadmill (it works for about a mile) but my body said he!! no. Good thing I listened to it, I felt much better when I got up this morning & also had a better night’s sleep.

This was what I call a bell curve run — faster in the first & last mile, a bit slower in the middle mile. Worked on cadence just a bit in the last mile, making it the fastest mile.

Catching the last bits of Fall; that burlap bag is “Lola”

Sunday Intention: recover
I was sorely tempted to run on the treadmill. It would just have been faster. Instead I warmed up (a loose term as it felt colder than the 40s temp) by walking Bandit and then just did it.

A good time was had by all. Luckily I didn’t have cell service so was unaware my mom was back in the hospital.

Favorites of the week
I know our hiking days are numbered, but I also knew Monday was going to be a very nice day. Had a great time at Huyck Preserve and a good lunch afterward. Unfortunately came back to the news my mom was back in the hospital. It seems it’s the new normal — but it irks me that she saw both her cardiologist and her primary care doctor just days before this happened. She came home on Friday.

The iphone 11 we bought from a friend arrived this week. Transferring everything was easy peasy (seriously, Apple makes it easy). My iphone 6 was bought refurbished, and always had a couple of things that never worked.

The first wasn’t really a big deal, but you couldn’t turn off the shutter sound when taking photos, which was occasionally annoying. No seriously — my nieces said “oh that’s easy”; I assured them I had tried quite a few things and nothing worked. Even they were stumped.

The next thing was much more annoying: it never kept a good sync with bluetooth. So I didn’t always get text notifications, for instance. I couldn’t use wireless headphones/pods of any kind unless I basically held my phone at chest level.

Sometimes it rang when I got a call, and sometimes it didn’t. Once I got a call & it rang and just seconds after there was a second call and no ring!

Finally, the voicemail on my old phone never worked. I once spent hours on the phone with support, and it was working when we finished. At some unknown point it stopped working. I actually haven’t tried to set up the voicemail on the new phone yet — simply because I didn’t even think about it.

Last, but certainly not least, the dishwasher is fixed! Thanks to Mr. Judy.

No, Bandit, That bolster isn’t for you. At least he doesn’t unmake the bed like Lola used to.
GWY Face & Neck Self Myofascial Release

ICYMI: Lately I’ve been a bit obsessed with neck release. It feels great to get the tension out of there — and out of our much neglected face, too. We’ll do that in the above short practice — plus I have a demo of face rolling for you, too. They all feel great!

Coming up on Tuesday & Friday: Tuesday I’m sharing something I learned from one of my worst half marathons. Friday it’s about getting inspiration from teabags.

  1. Oh,I bet stress is wearing you down. I hope it eases up and you feel restored soon.

Yay on the new phone. There’s a new iPhone in my future — or maybe just a new battery — but I’m trying to put it off for as long as possible.

Huge yay on the fixed dishwasher. It’s so annoying when appliances are broken!

I love that photo of Bandit by the creek (?).

    1. The photo of Bandit is by a creek — and in front of a waterfalls. He wanted us to move on so he could pee on things. 🙂

Stress ain’t going anywhere, unfortunately, if anything probably picking up.

Our friend gives us a friends & family deal. 🙂

  2. Hope you enjoy your new phone. I have an older one but I bought it new and it’s fine. We did have to buy a new washing machine. Always something.

That’s scary when you do not have cell service during a hike. I’m always worry that I’ll get lost or hurt.

    1. Our friend will also be selling his wife’s iphone 11 soon.

I wasn’t alone on the hike, except for a few minutes. I was going to explore further (with Bandit) in a different direction, but it turned out to be too muddy.

I have found it’s rare these days not to have service, but it was a good thing, I was able to enjoy that day. Not so great for my sister.

      1. I hike alone so not good for me. If you hike high elevation, you often don’t have service and it also depends on the service you use.

I prefer to buy a new phone. Too many issues with used ones. Eventually maybe the 12 mini. I don’t like the big ones. Especially since i always run with mine.

  3. All your issues with your old phone sound very annoying! Im glad you got a new one! And thats great that your dishwasher is working again. I hope you are feeling a little less stressed now!

    1. If I could still update the OS on the old phone I would’ve kept it a while longer. Even though the new one is used, it doesn’t have any of those issues. Keeps a great sync. Although I still don’t know about the voicemail. I kinda feel just send a text!who really needs voicemail?

  4. I’m so sorry about your mom. It’s always something with aging parents, isn’t it?

I’ll tell you who needs voicemail, those extended warranty people who keep calling me, that’s who! Did you know there’s a feature on the iPhone that you can set to block unknown numbers (not in your contacts) to go directly to VM. It’s a lifesaver for me. I hope you enjoy the new phone. There are some really amazing features!

  5. Glad your mom is home from the hospital once again, but that sounds like a stressful week for you! I can see why you need a neck and face release.
Your photos are beautiful- love the one of Bandit by the river.

  6. Stress totally wears you down. I always admire how well you listen to your body and take the extra rest you need . Hope this week goes well for you all!

    1. Thanks, Deborah. I was a sickly kid. I learned early. I’m actually a lot healthier now! I don’t actually get sick that often & part of that is knowing when to take unscheduled rest days. Does a body good. 😊

  7. Congrats on the new phone! My left air pod has never worked for more than five minutes and now my right one dies after a mile when I run. I really don’t want to buy new ones, but I see that in my future…

I LOVE that picture of Bandit sitting on the rock during your hike! That’s one for a frame!

I’m so sorry to hear that your mom was back in the hospital. I hope she’s feeling much better.

    1. Thanks, Debbie. She’s home, so that’s good. No cure for old age, unfortunately.

That’s so weird about your AirPods — mine work, they just wouldn’t work with the phone. They work fine with my iPad. I could walk downstairs & they’d still work! It was the phone. I would’ve kept it, too, except you can’t update the OS anymore. The time was right & our friend gives us a good deal. Win – win.

  8. I’m glad you’re able to listen to your body and rest when you need to. And that you have the comfort of dog walks in nature, too. I need to get a new phone but am waiting for the Black Friday deals – fine, as far as I’m concerned, if you need A Thing and it will be cheaper then.

  9. Sorry about the challenges with your mom. Glad she is at home.
Enjoy your new phone. I am lazy and I don’t like to change, so last year I have found a new IPhone under the Christmas Tree.
Bandit is a very good and beautiful mate!

  10. I think that Bolster is very much for Bandit.

I’m sorry your mom had too go back to the hospital. I’m glad she’s home.

I am also glad you got your new phone, the dishwasher is fixed, and you are still getting to enjoy hikes.
