Moving on up: 2/14 – 20 WRD

Normally when you have a big birthday you move up an age group (although sometimes after 70 you’re all lumped together — what’s up with that?). Of course, I’d actually have to race to get any benefit from that, and even then, I doubt I’d be rocking AG awards. Luckily it’s not why I run.

The ice finally melted from the back yard just a couple of days ago . . . and then it snowed. Not much, but the grass is covered again. For now.

Running Update

Definitely wasn’t feeling an outdoor run today

Monday Intention: celebrate my birthday
I was really torn between staying inside and going outside. It may have been a bit sunny, but very windy and very cold. I knew how long it would take to warm up after that and it’s not the way I wanted to spend my birthday.

So treadmill it was. I played around with running themes. I usually just stick to what’s on the schedule, don’t really have a tradition of running birthday miles — often don’t even run on my birthday. Just depends.

While I knew I could run 6 miles, I didn’t really think it was necessary or a good idea at this point. I settled on (roughly) 60 minutes of run/walk to celebrate 60 years.

I warmed up with a 5 minute Imagine Dragon cycle, which was fun. I chose the Billy Joel run (30 minutes) to start off with — speedwork and hills oh my! Walked a bit to catch my breath and then tackled the Chicks run (30 minutes), which was thankfully easier and I stopped running around 50 minutes to just walk and cool down.

Still reflecting

Thursday Intention: go long-er
I stepped out into the garage to head out for my long-er run — and saw a lot of water on the floor. Hello, new water heater. Then it took my Garmin forever to get a signal. After five minutes walking around our cul-de-sac, I just pressed the start button and started running. So much for that warm up inside.

Chester’s watching out for me

4 miles in my neighborhood is boring, but it’s a busy week so it is what it is. At least it was warmer, although since I ran in the morning it wasn’t that warm yet — especially considering the wind. Loved the new triple pocket tights in camo cabernet from Skirt Sports — that was probably the highlight of this run. I probably wouldn’t pay full price, but if there’s a sale, I definitely recommend these or use code SHAREIT15 for 15% off)! That and the fact that is was faster than I expected (my watch is buried under clothes so I just run by feel).

Nope, not out running at sunrise. But it was a cool sunrise.
Not so cool? Midday snow showers my a$$ (notice the snow on my gaiter). Grateful I was done before the road (and icy patches) were covered.

Saturday Intention: easy does it
After two 4 milers this week, battling wind on Wednesday and Saturday, going from almost Spring (well, a high of 50) to very cold and very windy again) it was time to take it easy. Except those midday snow showers arrived while I was running and it wasn’t big, fluffy snowflakes either. It was a decently paced run for me.

In case you missed it, on Monday I turned 60. But I bought the roses (half I brought to my mom)

Favorites of the week
Good eats. Mr. Judy also brought me some dark chocolate PB cups from my favorite local candy shop, which was a nice surprise. An ice free backyard (for about a day). I tried to schedule some meetups with friends, but between the weather and scheduling, sadly they didn’t happen (unless it one does today).

Next week will be a little challenging between weather and needing to stay at my mom’s a few days as her aide goes on vacation (and a temporary aide comes to cover). I’m good if I only get 2 runs, but am hoping for 3.

There was chocolate oatmeal, sushi & a large Chocolate & PB cupcake (and no dinner because I was not hungry!). And running & walking for 60 minutes to honor 60.
Is that a moon dog? Well that’s not what the moon looked like to the backed eye.
Sunrise coming through the bay window, onto a wall, and reflected in the mirror. Those cats on the mirror sure do remind me of my boys (Simba & Gizmo)
I took this photo a while ago. I had no idea of the flare going on as I took it but I love how it looks! If only the peace lily were sharper.

ICYMI: I’m still celebrating the month of love! Today it’s showing yourself some love by practicing this short but deeply relaxing Restorative Yoga practice. Then I have a very short video with some tips to keep you safe in tabletop — which is used a lot in Yoga!

Coming up on Tuesday & Friday: Tuesday I finish up my walk down memory lane of my 50s. Friday it’s time for Runfessions with Marcia @ Marciashealthyslice

  1. Sounds like you had a nice birthday. And that your short runs are working for you.

AG awards are usually still grouped through 85 for the most part. LOL I can’t wait to hit 70 for that reason.

Yes it was a challenging week due to that wind… yesterday almost did us in. I think we ran very early when it was in the single digits. It warmed up but I’d rather not run alone.

I hope the wind is over since I want to do a waterfall hike today.

  2. I’m glad you had such a nice birthday. My big one isn’t for a while. I already got my gift, tho! 😛

Yeah, this February, the weather has been extra special, hasn’t it? If it’s not the wind, it’s the ice.

    1. February weather is usually extra special. We haven’t had that much snow, though (even if we’re expecting more at the end of next week). FB keeps reminding me of how much snow we had some years at this time!

  3. Glad you had a good birthday! I don’t think I’ve done either of those runs yet – will look them up.

So, did you need a new hot water heater? Or was the leaking because it wasn’t set up right?

That cat mirror is so cute!

  4. I sounds like your birthday was perfect! A nice run, flowers, good food… glad you enjoyed it.
Good luck this week- it sounds like it could be challenging. Hope everything goes well!

  5. Sounds like a nice week of celebration, despite what the weather threw at you. What is up with the wind? It seems like we’re all experiencing it…and not in a good way. Those roses look so beautiful. I’m glad you kept some for yourself 😉

  6. Sounds like a very nice birthday week and you got some great pics! Yes the weather has been a challenge for sure but the high winds remind me of spring’s arrival. One more month! That’s a lunar corona.

    1. Ok, the weird thing is I didn’t actually see the ring around the moon at all until I took the photo.

The wind absolutely reminds me of Spring except for the fact that most of the time it definitely feels like winter.

  7. Sounds like a great way to welcome in your birthday. The weather has been all over the place and we never quite know what season we will wake up in! Have a great week ahead and thanks for linking up

  8. mm sushi. The best.
So glad you had a great birthday week.
I don’t care about age group wins either, but I l laughed at my first 40. I think there were more 40-49 then there were 30-39 finishers!

    1. Our lowest have been negative temps. We haven’t had a lot of snow, but we have definitely had wind & cold!

That’s why we hope to head a little further south. There will still be cold and snow — but it won’t be as cold most of the time. Now just to balance it with summers that aren’t too hot & humid, too!

  9. I am glad you had a beautiful birthday. 60 years – 60 minutes running, a nice way to celebrate!
I am not lucky about my “new” age group. Lately I always skip the first year: when I was 60 I broke my shoulder and 5 years later all the races were cancelled for Covid.
The moon dog photo is amazing.

  10. A lovely birthday and I hope your week is going well. I love your range of photos, too, thank you for sharing them with us. Here our age categories continue upwards after 70 as far as I know … I’ve not even run parkrun in my new one yet!

    1. I never had sushi until my honeymoon (a cruise). But I mistakenly took a bite of ginger and that was the end of that — until about 10 years later.

My husband jokes that introducing me to sushi was the worst thing he ever did. He thought I’d hate it — surprise! It’s my favorite.

  11. I love sushi! And wasabi! And ginger! I didn’t try it until I was in college. I did not grow up with adventurous eaters (they were good cooks and we ate nutritious food, but it was very much plain protein/starch/veggie).

I hope you had a wonderful birthday! Sorry about the hot water heater. That’s no fun.
