Stick a fork in July; it’s done!: 7/25 – 31 WRD

I had already decided to take a week off running this week — good thing, too, because I can’t even begin to tell you how exhausted I was when I got back from my moms mid week. It’s always tiring, but throw in that extreme heat — wowza! I sincerely hope that I don’t have to do this again in the near future but who knows.

In the last 3 months I have “onboarded” 3 different aides. As tough as it is for me, I do keep in mind it’s even tougher for my mom. So not a huge amount of activity, #sorrynotsorry. I needed that — just a bit sorry that I missed some nice running weather this week.

I do find it a bit amusing that I tend to get in a lot more steps on rest days at my moms than I do at home. I can walk further on my own than I can with Mr. Judy and Bandit.

I’m joining Kim @ Kimrunsonthefly and Deborah @ Confessionsofamotherrunner, and lots of walking.

Running Update

Nothing. I thought I might run today, and it was a beautiful morning, but yesterday I decided I wasn’t yet ready to rush out early. It’s unfortunate another heatwave is expected next week, but I’m sure I’ll manage.

Favorites of the week
I did stop in the afternoon at Montgomery Place last week on the way down. It was 95F. Yes, I sweated buckets. It helps to destress me though.

There is a funny (in hindsight) story to this trip that I’ll share when we gather over hot beverages next week.

Why do you do this to me?

We took advantage of the much cooler temps yesterday to give Bandit a much needed bath. He definitely seems less itchy now.

Mr. Judy improvised a “thunder shirt” out of the towel (calming)
A friend posted a photo of Migas one day. So I improvised. . .

It has been forever since I’ve had Migas — which are strips of tortillas friend up with veggies and eggs. A friend posted a photo, and I was having FOMO. I used From the Ground Up Tortilla chips (Amazon Affiliate link here — although they are definitely cheaper in grocery stores) and then sautéed onion and peppers and added the eggs. Almost like a Mexican Matzo Brie (minus the matzo).

ICYMI: If travel — or stress — or both! — ends up in your back and neck, this is a great Yin/Kundalini practice to try. Practice with me here, I’m giving a short demo of bowtie here. If you want just one pose to help open up your shoulders and back, Bowtie is your new best friend.

Coming up on Friday: Friday I’ll be joining up with you over beverages. Taking a little blogging break to concentrate on some other things.

  1. I have never heard of Migas! Those look and sound tasty. Now I have FOMO 😉 Looks like we kind of “twinned” it this week with running (I had a few miles, but they were at the absolute bare minimum).

    1. Yes, but you had plenty of biking! I thought I’d run today. I knew I didn’t feel like getting up & out early though. So I realized one more day off won’t make a difference — or maybe it will in a good way.

  2. Never heard of Migas either.

    Hope this aide works out.

I think if you need running breaks you should take them. Glad it helped

I’m crazy in that if I’m not hurt I run. I enjoy it and I need it in my life. Also have fall races to prepare for.

And yes the heat is returning this week.

  3. I hope your mom’s current aide works out. You know that I know how frustrating it is to find a good caregiver. What beautiful spots you found along the way – I love the reflecting pond with the elephant ears along side.

  4. Migas look delicious!

Sorry about the stress with your mom’s aides. I hope this one works out a bit longer! That is definitely challenging for you all, I’m sure.

  5. HMMM! I’ll bet I could make a vegan version of migas- I accept your challenge! (What? That wasn’t a challenge… oh.) i might try it this week.
Sounds like you had a much-needed re-set this week! Oh, I’ve heard of thunder shirts- someone was telling me you can get them for cats. I think I’d rather just let my cat deal with the noise (she was afraid of the fireworks) than try to wrestle her into a thunder shirt.
I enjoyed your photos as always!

    1. It really shouldn’t be too hard to veganize. The only hard part would be the cheese. Of course there are now lots of vegan cheeses.

We trained our cats to walk on a harness & leash when they were young. That kind of ended when we got dogs & a few other incidents. OTOH it came in really handy when we moved here. Did you know you have to take them out of the Cari& walk them through security?

I feel for Jessie it was definitely a very stressful experience flying with all the animals!

  6. I’m sure spending time going back and forth to your mom’s is exhausting! I am so grateful that my parents and my FIL are still independent. Enjoy your week of rest.

  7. I’m sure that onboarding different aides takes a lot of patience and understand so kudos to you for doing that three different times. I’m sure that your mom really appreciates it as well too.

I’ve never heard of Migas but that really looks delicious!

  8. Migas look delicious, I had never heard of them. Rest weeks are great. I make it point to do at least two weeks a year. Sounds like you picked the perfect week.
