Turning into a winter slug: 1/11-17 Weekly Wrap

Every winter I think: this is the time I will finally lose those last 5 pounds, tone up, and really get in shape for running half marathons later in the year.

But . . . it’s winter. Winter makes me want to curl up in a ball and hibernate until May. Those bears are onto something!

Running update
It was cold; it was windy; it rained, it snowed, it sleeted. It got warmer. 2 runs on the treadmill (and I discovered the incline isn’t working when I wanted to try some hill work), one slow run outside, and a faster one at the winter series.

Not enough yoga, not a lot of cross training except for strength training. My loose plan right now is to alternate weeks: one week run and strength train three times, followed by one week run 4 times, strength train twice. Try to keep a mostly daily yoga practice. And try to get in short bursts of cross training (other than strength training and yoga).

All depends on what life has in store for me, but fail to plan, you plan to fail, right?

Weekend Favorites
Sushi. Again. This time my husband was too tired to go out to dinner. I swear since he discovered mealeo we might never leave the house again. I’m kind of okay with that in the winter.

We rented “The Martian” saturday and watched it with a big bowl of buttered popcorn. Then chased that with “Apollo 13” saturday night. Then watched “The Martian” again Sunday night since the rental is available for 48 hours. Obviously, we liked it; a bit too long, definitely science fiction, but entertaining.

In case you missed it, I added a button for the furkids to the menu and posted my longer tribute to Chester. I’ve always planned to share more about the furkids here. The primary focus of this blog is healthy living and running, but as I wrote on my facebook page, I want to share all my passions with you. And I know so many runners are passionate about their furkids, too.

And that’s a wrap!

What are your passions other than running/fitness?

  1. I, too, am a winter slug this year, like Wendy said in her post, in a funk. A deep one. It will pass. Today so bright and cold is beautiful; days like yesterday, cold, windy, dreary, the sun hiding its comfort, takes away all my ambition and tired me tremendously. Even though I do not want to wish my life away, I will be happy when March teases us with its promise of nicer days.

Maybe you can consider forgetting about those last five pounds? You look fit, exercise, eat so well; it could be that your body has found its set point.

I am not a science fiction fan, but I do want to see The Martian. I’m pleased to read that you liked it.

Last night I saw your story about Chester but did not have a chance to read it. I’m headed there now. Have a good week.

    1. Unfortunately, weight watchers really works for me. Their goal weight is based on a healthy BMI range & my goal weight is at the very top of that. If I go more than 2 lbs over, I have to pay. I don’t like having to pay & frankly, I don’t like how my face looks when I’m more than 2 lbs over my goal weight. So those last 5 lbs really do need to go & I’m sure they will- someday. I hung out just a few lbs above my goal weight for years! Today is sunny, although bitter, but I’m actually getting some stuff done. Sun makes such a huge difference!

    1. Wendy, don’t worry about it. I really wrote it mostly for me, anyway (and it can still make me tear up).

I can’t say I’ve really been lucky with my furkids, but I’ve never lost one suddenly like that and my heart goes out to you.

I can tell you from my cats who had lymphoma, that even though I’m sure it doesn’t feel this way, it’s probably much kinder.

I had to watch them basically waste away, stop eating . . . and in the end they went just as suddenly as your Cleo (and ironically enough, one them was MY Cleo).

I know in time it won’t hurt so much and it will be easier to remember the silly things they did, but it’s so hard at first.

And as hard as it is, I am still glad for the time I have had with each and every furkid.

  2. What a great idea of swapping up the weeks. Why do we think we have to do whatever it is all in one week anyway? I could get use to this recovery period, a little too use to it! I managed to make myself get out of bed this morning for an easy run just to see how the ol knee was doing. Happy to report a thumbs up! I’m heading over to check out the furbabies page! 🙂

      1. I do hope so. I think if I can keep my long runs on the short side it’ll give my knee time to heal at least that’s what I’m hoping for 🙂 There is a lot of difference in a half an full but at the same time training is very similar just longer.

  3. I thought the Martian was pretty entertaining as well. I could have done without the storm scene, but after that I was okay.
Booo, to the incline not working, but at least you can still run on it 🙂 The alternating weeks sounds like a great idea.

  4. I don’t know anyone who doesn’t become a bit of a slug in the winter. The photo of your tiny dogs and the Great Dane;s is hilarious. Good job getting in some workouts this week. I had to lay low after an injury during my marathon last Sunday.

    1. You should be taking time off after the marathon anyway! I hope that it’s not anything serious.

My husband used to joke he wanted to get a saddle for our dogs so they could ride the Great Danes.

And when we moved into this house, our neighbors had a Mastiff!

  5. We watched The Martian Saturday night too! We thought it was excellent. I usually doze off during movies, but not this one! I’m feeling a little blah since I’ve returned home. It’s cold. I don’t want to work out. I’ve also been over sleeping. But, I know it will pass. My knee needs some rest anyway so I’m taking advantage of it. Thanks for linking with us Judy!

    1. I did doze off — both times! But I just have trouble staying awake in the evenings in winter.

Sounds like you’re experiencing the post marathon blues, but knowing you, it won’t last long.

And as I said to Darlene, apparently all the cool runners were watching The Martian last weekend. 🙂

  6. With yoga & strength training everyday, I wouldn’t call you a slug. A slug sits on the couch and watches TV.

If I am not running, I barely get in 1,000 steps – sit at my desk all day.

I hate this cold weather but it the wind lets up, I’m going out after work.

I’m worried about how the snow will impact my 12 miler this weekend.

    1. I am really not sure what the heck I’m doing this weekend. They’re not sure what the heck it’s doing this weekend.

We were going to go to my parents, but we need to decide by Thursday. Not looking great right now.

Part of why I decided to do 5 on the treadmill today — be careful out there tonight if you choose to run.

And I don’t do yoga or ST every day . . . I keep leaving my yoga for the evenings and by then I’m usually too tired.
